It's funny when a relationship ends. You feel this awful emptiness and this overwhelming feeling like you are impossible to love but then that day comes where you realize that even though it hurts, it was worth it. If it doesn't hurt then it wasn't real. That's what makes moving on so hard but necessary. You can't be afraid of love because someday it will work out and if you fear it then you might just miss your chance.
something I've been working on...no big deal.

Eli/Clare Story~
"I didn’t want to interfere with the guy you love because I know what it’s like to lose the person you love…TWICE."
Eli woke up startled by the barking dog that was once lying comfortably on the couch with him. He rubbed at his eyes glancing at the clock on the wall and hushing the dog seeing that Cece already went upstairs. He watched the dog walk over to the door and sighed. “Really? A walk now?” The dog barked at Eli and he put his hands up. “Fine just stop the barking. Jeez.” Eli got up and found the leash his neighbors left him before opening the door to find it was pretty cold this evening. “You would pick the coldest night to drag me outside, wouldn’t you?” Eli grabbed his jacket and a hat before leashing the dog and putting his phone in his pocket. The moment they got outside the dog began dragging Eli down the sidewalk. “WHOA! SLOW YOUR ROLL PUP! STOP! HEY!” Eli’s feet hit the pavement hard as he tried not to let go of the leash. He knocked over trashcans and cursed under his breath when he hit his hip on a fence trying to keep up. “RUSTY! STOP! HEEL! FOR THE LOVE OF MY LUNGS PLEASE STOP!” Eli continued to yell as they rounded down a few different streets. He hadn’t even taken in his surroundings to where his feet had taken him. “RUSTY! STOP BEFORE I HAVE YOU STUFFED!” The dog halted but Eli’s feet didn’t making him trip over the leash and fall into some trashcans. Eli rolled around and groaned. “Bad dog.” He mumbled stretching out. The dog barked once more and Eli looked at the house realizing who’s trashcans he was sprawled out in. “You can’t be serious.” He looked back at the dog. “Of all the houses in Toronto and you drag me through my ex-girlfriends? As if I need help in THAT area.” Eli said disgusted. “Eli?” Eli looked up quickly and saw Clare standing with a book in her hands and a blanket draped over her arm. He got to his feet quickly and dusted his pants off before picking up the cans. “Yeah hey sorry about that.” Eli gestured to the cans and she looked at the dog. “Did you get a dog?” She asked confused. “No no I’m dog sitting for my neighbor. I was thinking of getting one and this is sort of a trial run.” Eli explained as Clare pet the dog. “I didn’t even know you liked dogs.” She chuckled and Eli gave a faked smile. “Yeah well who doesn’t? Big, fluffy, dependable. Never let’s you down…anyway I’d love to chat but I gotta walk him. See you later.” Eli grabbed the leash and pulled Rusty away from Clare quickly before turning his back on her.
Clare felt her cheeks flood with warmth at his sudden brush off. It didnt help that for the past few days he had been ignoring her altogether. No reply to her texts or calls or messages. It was as if she didn’t exist to him at all anymore and for some reason it really bothered her. Now here he was walking away after not talking to her for so long and it really got under her skin. She bit the corner of her lip, contemplating turning around to go back in the house but something moved her feet in the opposite direction. “Eli?” She called out, frustrated again that he didnt stop, “Seriously would you just stop?” Again no reply and before she could stop herself she yelled out. “ELI STOP WOULD YOU JUST STOP? RIGHT NOW!!” Her raised voice was what finally did and and he stopped, tugging on the dogs leash as he turned to look at her angry expression. “What in the world is your problem?!” She asked, “I get it. I get that you don’t want anything to do with me but the least you could do is have the decency to tell me why because seriously I’m done looking so desperate for your attention! What happened to staying friends? I get my boyfriend back and it’s as if I’ve gotten the plague or something!” The rage was evident in her expressin but Eli didnt say a word as his hold tightened on the dogs leash. She waited for him to reply and took in a deep breath, trying to calm herself but it didn’t seem to be working. “Calls, texts, avoiding me at all costs, that’s not what friends do. So honestly what is the deal? And don’t tell me you’ve been busy because I know you’ve been spending time with everyone BUT me!” She hadn’t realized it but she had taken a few steps towards him, her surprise came from the fact that he hadn’t moved away. “What could I possibly have done to make you hate me enough to act like I don’t even exist? Just tell me so I can try and fix it or something…” Her anger fainted into a frown now as she watched him, waiting for a reply.
Eli sighed and rubbed at his eyes. “Clare, I dont hate you. Don’t be so dramatic.” He had just woken up not too long ago and the last thing he wanted to do was have this conversation with Clare. “Dramatic? You’re the one going to great lengths to avoid me. I deserve an explanation.” Clare demanded and Eli held the leash up. “I’m a little busy now.” As if on cue, Rusty laid down on the sidewalk. “Traitor.” Eli mumbled as Clare crossed her arms over her chest. “Well? I’m waiting.” She pushed. “I’m not trying to push you off. I just want you to spend your time accordingly.” Eli said and Clare snorted. “Oh give me a break. If you didnt want to go to a movie with Jake and I you could have-” Eli cut her off. “It’s not about the stupid movie Clare.” Eli said. “You know, I dont even understand you sometimes. You pine after this guy all summer and when you finally get him back you still try and act like you owe me something. It’s like everyone else gets it except you.” Eli explained and Clare rolled her eyes. “Sorry for wanting to include you. I guess it’s a crime to include a friend in plans.” Clare pouted and Eli stared at her. “And if it were different? You and I made those plans together. If I would have invited Imogen would you have been comfortable enough to go?” Clare froze at the question. “Even though you know Imogen and I are JUST friends can you honestly say you would have been able to go and sit in a movie with us?” Eli asked further as Clare swallowed hard. “So that’s what this is about? You can’t hang out with me because I’ve actually got Jake now? I’m sorry if things got strange between us this summer. Maybe leaning on your shoulder about him wasnt a good idea but Eli…you and I…you know that what we had…it’s gone now.” Clare explained and Eli laughed. “Are you serious? You think I choose not to hang out with you because I’m jealous of Jake and am still in love with you?” Eli said making Clare shift on her feet. “How self absorbed are you?” Eli’s words slipped off his tongue too quickly and Clare’s sympathy turned quickly. “Excuse me?! I am NOT self absorbed.” Clare defended stepping closer to him. “Then you arent as bright as I gave you credit for.” Eli said with a smug disinterest in Clare as if she were some silly girl. She shoved his shoulders back and he shook his head. “So now I’m stupid and self absorbed. Please explain to me how you’ve jumped to THAT conclusion since you know everything, Elijah.”
She could feel her cheeks growing wamr again but this time the warmth grew to her ears and neck and she could hardly hold in her anger. “You know what?” She began, surprised she found the ability to speak through her rage, “Don’t tell me. I’m sure you have some explanation that I really don’t even want to hear. Seriously and how was THIS what was so hard for you to say? It took you this long to tell me that you think I’m too self absorbed to be friends with anymore?” She tried to hide the sound of hurt in her voice. “Seriously? That’s low even for you Eli. I mean you have all this time to spend with Imogen or Fiona and at Adam’s but you can’t even reply to a simple text? It’s called being a good person. Even just a text saying you’re busy instead of ignoring it completely. And what bugs me the most is that would you even give me the time if I asked you to hang out just us, without Jake? Because believe it or not but he doesn’t mind me hanging out with you. He doesnt have a jealousy problem.” Eli’s eyerbows raised at her words but he didn’t speak and his lack of speaking only upset her more. “You say I’ve changed but the Eli I know would have at least had the decendy to tell me he didnt want to be friends anymore instead of trying to erase me from his life without saying a thing.” She knew she sounded harsh but she couldnt help it, she was so upset by the concept of losing him for some reason that it rushed her with all her anger and she couldn’t stop herself from talking what instantly came to her mind without thinking it through first.
Eli knew she was pissed by the way she used his name but he wasn’t going to let Clare push him around. Not anymore. Especially after she has made him out to be the jealous ex twice in the moments they had started talking. “You are so far from who you used to be it’s almost sad.” Eli said and Clare huffed. “At least I’m mature enough to confront you. I don’t just avoid you like some coward.” Clare’s words caused a burn that ran up Eli’s spine and out of his mouth as he stepped back to where he was originally standing invading Clare’s space and pointing at her. “I’ve been avoiding you in hopes that you would make up for time lost with Jake. I didn’t want to interfere with the guy you love because I know what it’s like to lose the person you love…TWICE. Everything I do is for you Clare! I’m not trying to hurt you like you always do me. I’m trying to help you.” Eli explained and Clare’s face stayed stone. “HELP ME HOW?!” She yelled and Eli’s face twitched as his own anger exploded. “BY GIVING YOU A SECOND CHANCE!” He yelled back as Clare stood confused. “I…If I had a second chance with you…If I was given a chance and got you back I wouldn’t waste a single second with you. Holding you, kissing you, telling you how much I loved you and it’s like…you take that all for granted with Jake. Nothing is a guarantee Clare. We aren’t promised tomorrow. I wanted you to get that time back with him like I never got with you…or Julia.” Eli swallowed hard and Clare felt her stomach churn. Eli took a breath and broke the awkward silence that started to settle between them. “You sit there in this world of joy because you got your boyfriend back and talk to me like I’m stupid and dont understand. Treat me like I’m being this way because I’m jealous but you want honesty? I’ll give that to you. I’m not in love with you. Not this you. Not the girl who puts her own happiness before everyone else’s all the time. When we first met all you wanted to do was help everyone else. Your parents, Adam…me. I don’t know you. I can’t be jealous that Jake has someone who was never mine.” Eli’s words stunned Clare and she wrapped her arms around her frame taking in what he’d said. “Look, I’m going to go. You look cold and I’ve got to get home.” Eli said rubbing the back of his neck. “So that’s it? That’s how you solve things now? Ignore. Walk away. Just leave me here to deal with this because you’ve made it up your mind.” Clare spoke softly and Eli gave a sad smile. “Guess I’ve just picked up bad habits of others. Consider it karma, I guess.” Eli shrugged. “I’m sorry for upsetting you but you wanted me to be honest with you and I have been.” Eli said staring at her. Clare bit her lip.

Imogeli Story~
“Do you need help with that, Eli? I’m really good at bl-”
“You might want to slow down, didn’t you just get back from the Dentist?” Imogen teased as Eli continued to devour the chocolate chip pancakes she had finished making. “I ate an entire box of Oreos before I went and not a single cavity.” He beamed proudly, purposefully taking a large bite out of his pancake. Imogen rolled her eyes before poking him in the side. “An entire box of Oreos? How do you keep this figure? Tell me your secrets.” She continued to poke fun, Fiona joined in the laughter as she opened the fridge. “I should be asking you the same thing, Miss Moreno. I still have some pancakes on my plate, while you have none.” He pinched the skin on her side and she giggled pushing his hand away. “A lady never tells.” Was all she replied as she carried her dishes to the sink. “Now tell me again why Imogen came home sulking about losing your pole?” Fiona asked suspiciously addressed both of them once the laughter had died down. “Imogen needs to learn how to hold onto things.” Eli commented trying to hide his smile with his glass of orange juice. “I have a very firm grip on most things, especially poles.” Imogen defended herself stubbornly and rolled her eyes when Eli joked on his orange juice. “Fishing poles.” She clarified looking at Fiona who was more bemused than anything. “He told me to put my back into it when I was casting and I just put a little too much and it flew into the lake. Poor Gregor Mendell.” “Gregor Mendell?” Eli asked confused finally recovering from his choking. “Yeah, I named your pole Gregor Mendell, got a problem with that?” She asked hopping into the counter. “No, you can name him whatever you want, he’s dead now anyway.” Eli shrugged finishing up his food. “He’s not dead,” Imogen whined. “He’s taking a long vacation, underwater.” “Enough you two.” Fiona declared throwing her arms dramatically into the air. “What’s the plan for the rest of the day, can we do something inside. The heat is killing me.” She stated, opening the freezer in an attempt to cool off. “I have a better idea!” Imogen squealed hopping off the counter and lifting her shirt off her head and throwing it off towards the couch revealing a red bikini top. “Let’s go swimming!” She jumped up and down a little excited by the prospect of cooling off.
Eli went wide eyed for a moment not sure why Imogen was taking her shirt off but when she started jumping around like a kid at the prospect of swimming both him and Fiona had to laugh. “THIS is why we have to limit your sugar intake.” Fiona said getting up from the table. “Dont you know you arent supposed to swim until an hour after you eat.” Eli mused and Imogen narrowed her eyes making Eli put his hands up. “Or we could drown. That’s cool too.” He got up and cleaned his plate off. “As much as I’d love to rock one of your very fashionable bikini’s I dont think it will work out for me.” Eli continued to poke and Fiona let out a chuckle at the sink. “As if we didnt buy you swim trunks when we were out shopping the other day.” Imogen came bouncing out of the back room holding black and white swim trunks with a huge smile. “Look they even have skulls on the butt!” She turned them around and Eli smiled. “Who wouldnt want skulls on their butt?” Eli walked over and took the trunks. “Go ahead and change in the bathroom. Grab some towels from the back of the linen closet too.” Fiona said as Eli nodded. He changed and was pretty impressed how well the trunks fit. He grabbed the towels and walked out to the living room to see Fiona had already changed and had a long dress over top of her suit. Imogen stood by the door with a beach bag and inflatable tube making Eli laugh. “We really have to get you out more often, Imo.” Eli shook his head but earned a hit to the arm from Fiona. “I’ll have you know we do lots of things together outside of the condo. Just because you spend so much time with all your other cool friends.” Fiona faked jealousy and Eli rolled his eyes. “You know I love hanging with you both so cut that right now.” The girls smiled as they walked out. “Where exactly is this pool?” Eli asked as they headed to the elevator. “There’s one here. It’s nice and private.” Fiona said as they got onto the elevator. Eli glanced at Imogen as she continued to bounce bubbly with her tube. He had really enjoyed spending the last two days with the girls. He finally felt a true friendship with nothing extra with Imogen and Fiona had mentioned having a few talks with her which put him at ease. She seemed happy and he liked that. As they made it to the pool Fiona tossed a plastic bag at Eli. “What’s this?” He asked and she chuckled as Imogen set up the towels on three long chairs. “That is a floatation device you will be blowing up while I put sun tan lotion on Imogen.” Fiona said as she rummaged through the bag. “Oh joy.” Eli sighed as he unraveled the floaty and started blowing.
“Do you need help with that, Eli? I’m really good at bl-” “Imogen, please don’t finish that sentence.” Eli cut her off, in attempt to keep some of his sanity. Imogen flushed a little as she turned back to Fiona who was giving her a look before motioning for Imogen to lie down. She smiled closing her eyes as Fiona rubbed the lotion onto her back, the last thing she needed right now was a terrible sun burn. Imogen was glad her relationship was Eli was strong again and even though it hurt that she wanted more and he’d never think of her like that, it was okay because he was finally beginning to seem happy again. Not the happy like during the play, but the happy she first noticed in him all those months ago when he’d pull up to school in his huge black hearse. She was positive he didn’t remember the first time they met. Officially the first time he met her was when she saved his ass during the computer incident. How she first met him was a different story. It had been the first month of school and everything was the same, trying desperately to stand out but continuing to be invisible. Someone had shoved her in the hall and she dropped her stack of books and binders, she bit her lip and was about to bend down when a hand started picking up her books, she looked up to see the most beautiful boy she could imagine. He wordlessly handed her the things she’d drop and smiled, before a senior boy and a guy in a beanie had called him over to talk about a plan. She thought she had imagined him for the few weeks after that desperately looking for him while roaming the halls. If she had known that she’d be friends with that boy just a few months later she would never have believed it and she believed in a lot of things. “Okay, my turn!” Fiona exclaimed breaking Imogen out of her thoughts before rolling over and beginning to later up her friend. Imogen looked over to a red faced Eli as he finished blowing up the tube. “My hero.” Imogen joked, throwing an overdramatic hand to her forehead halting the rub down of Fiona. “Don’t stop on my account.” He wheezed short of breath, but was still smug enough to wiggle his eyebrows suggestively at the two girls. “In your dreams, Goldsworthy.” Fiona replied as Imogen finished up. “Always.” Eli responded cheekily. “Ready to go in?” Imogen asked Fiona and she laughed before moving in the chair to gain maximum sun exposure. “This suit is not meant to get wet, it’ll ruin the fabric with all the chemicals in that water.” “It’s a swim suit.” Imogen complained, grabbing at her own top. “It’s meant to get wet.” Fiona shook her head and placed her sunglasses over her eyes. “Fine.” Imogen huffed over to the edge of the pool and looked over wanting to check the temp with her foot but she should’ve known better. It was quiet, too quiet. She heard sudden footsteps and an arm around her waist before she was submerged into the ice cold water by her skull short wearing friend.
Eli re-submerged at the same time as Imogen and her hair was stuck to the front of her face making Eli laugh. “Sorry did I get you there?” Eli joked as Imogen moved her hair off her face so she could see Eli. “Just a bit.” She paddled over as Eli smirked proud of himself. “Oh what’s that?” Eli looked to where Imogen was pointing and she leaped up in the water high enough to dunk him under. She held him under for a few seconds before he poked her stomach and she let go. “Try not to drown him. I don’t think Adam would be too happy if he died and didn’t get his comics back.” Fiona said as she leaned her head back. Eli resurfaced and his hair was now stuck to his face making Imogen laugh. “You know it’s good to see you laugh. I dont think we’ve ever really shared a genuine laugh together.” Eli said making Imogen scrunch her face. “You mean because you were always so caught up in Clare Edwards and I was always so caught up in you?” Imogen said making Eli chuckle. “I imagine so. Have I ever told you that I enjoy your bluntness. It’s very refreshing to have someone be so upfront.” Eli floated around in the pool as Imogen reached over and grabbed her tube and listened to him. “Why sugarcoat things? It only confuses people and leaves you in the wind to be misunderstood.” Imogen said honestly. Eli nodded. “You seem happier since getting closer to Fi. I don’t know what it is but you seem different.” Eli backstroked deeper into the water as Imogen floated in front of him. “I feel more at peace I guess. Knowing I have friends and not being so worried about pleasing everyone all the time. Fiona made me realize I’m too young to be so stressed out.” Imogen explained. “she does have a way with words, doesn’t she.” Eli teased loud enough for Fiona to hear. “You know you love it, Goldsworthy.” Fiona shouted. “Yes dear.” Eli responded playfully. Imogen watched him carefully. “What about you? You’ve changed too. Getting healthy, being more active. You seem happier too. It’s a happy I haven’t seen and I like it.” She smiled making Eli smile. “When I’m not having my episodes and reverting to old memories or over thinking things, yeah I’m peachy.” Eli said trying to play down how he’s felt the past few days. “It’s okay to have those moments, Eli. You control the bipolar, it doesn’t control you. Remember that. You work through those moments and you come out with a smile. Everything else is pointless.” Imogen said firmly as Eli took it all in. She was right. Despite the feelings that he had stirred up because of Clare, spending time with Adam, Drew and Bianca watching movies and hanging out with Fiona and Imogen did make him happy. He had fun and laughed without over thinking or over analyzing everything.
“Watch out below!” Imogen called out before she jumped from the side into the pool, creating a tidal wave across the water, Eli smiled as he swayed with the wave. Imogen emerged spitting water out of her mouth and swimming with one hand in front of her. “Hey can you retie my top, it fell off during that last splash.” Imogen asked, standing on the tips of her toes turning around facing away from Eli. “Sure.” Eli replied moving closer, grabbing her shoulders to keep her in place before grabbing the strings and tying them together. Being this close to Imogen usually made Eli feel guilty or uncomfortable, but over the past couple days he actually enjoyed being this closer to her. He wasn’t ready for new feelings or anything, especially with her after everything they’d been through but he couldn’t deny something was there. “All done.” He told her, his voice deeper than he thought and coughed a little blaming the pool water. “Thanks.” Imogen replied turning over her shoulder to give him a smile, she floated on her back for awhile before breaking the comfortable silence. “Um, have you…” Imogen started to ask, sitting up from floating looking down at the water. “Nevermind.” Eli tilted his head, trying to see her eyes curious to her sudden shyness. “What is it?” He questioned swimming closer to her. “I was just wondering if you’d talked to Clare recently.” She asked softly, looking up to see his face conflicted. “You don’t have to talk about it.” Imogen continued quickly. “I mean I don’t care if you talk to her or not, but she does make you happy sometimes and I want you to be happy.” “It’s complicated.” Eli told her feeling a little weird about confiding in her about someone she openly dislikes. “I know I’m probably the last person you’d want to talk about that with.” Imogen said picking up on his sudden mood change. “I just want you to know that I’m your friend and if you need someone to talk to I’m here. If someone is important to you then you should be in their lives. If you’re a true friend, you want them to happy no matter what, even if it means you’re hurting.” Imogen told him grabbing his hand under the water.
Eli bit the corner of his lip before letting out a sigh. “How do you do this?” He asked and Imogen let her head fall to the side in confusion. “I know how you felt about me but you knew how I felt about Clare. How do you just stop feeling that way in order to be friends? Like this?” Eli asked gesturing between the two of them. Imogen smiled lightly as she shook her head. “It’s not easy. It never is. But we’re all just chapters in a very long book. Clare was a chapter, I was a chapter and just because those chapters are over doesn’t mean they wont appear later in the story. Whatever feelings you and Clare shared, whatever feelings I had for you, who knows where the future will take us. I stopped living on each action and started living in the moment. You will make yourself miserable if you sit around waiting for the next chapter to end in hopes a chapter you like more will arise. This is your story Eli. Write it how you want.” Imogen gave his hand a squeeze and Eli looked at her. “You will never know how sorry I am for what I did to you Imogen.” Eli said remorsefully. Imogen shook her head. “That chapter is over. It’s time to move on.” She gave him a reassuring smile. “No really. I wish I wasn’t so sick when we first met because listening to you now…I feel like I’ve wasted precious time getting to know you.” Eli explained further. “If it weren’t for what happened between us I might not be who I am now. So don’t beat yourself up. That’s mine and Fiona’s job.” She winked at Eli before pushing off of his chest to dive back into the water. Eli swam after her and Imogen lay her arms out holding herself above the water as he approached. “So you’re saying that the pain will remain but moving on and enjoying life makes it less present?” Eli asked as Imogen opened her eyes. “I’m saying pain weighs you down. Being happy and enjoying the little moments makes you feel…weightless.” She said with a smile. Eli was amazed at how right Imogen was. He needed to stop putting so much pressure on himself to do the right thing and just be himself. He’s never cared about pleasing anyone so why start now? “Eli you are turning very lobster-esk. Maybe we should go in and relax.” Fiona said from her towel. Eli smirked. “Only if you rub me with aloe vera.” Eli teased as Fiona rolled her eyes. “Keep your pants on, will ya?” Fiona said as Imogen and Eli got  out of the water. Eli handed Imogen a towel and she smiled. “Look at you being sweet. I hope you don’t think that gives you a leg up.” Imogen teased. “Well I’m sure it helps.” Eli smirked as Imogen and Fiona exchanged a look before shoving Eli back in the pool. They laughed as he hit the water and he shook his head underwater as he resurfaced. “Not cool.” He said wiping the water out of his eyes. “Aw come inside you big baby.” Imogen said with a laugh as she wrapped her towel around her and headed inside. Fiona had gathered things up and Eli put his hand on her arm. “Thank you.” Eli said with a genuine smile. Fiona returned it before bumping his shoulder. “A girl needs her best friends to get along.” She winked at Eli and he laughed. “Now let’s go get cleaned up and you can make me lunch.” She pointed to the bags and Eli grabbed them with a playful sigh. “Yes ma’am.” Eli followed Fiona inside to spend the rest of the day enjoying the little things.
