BILLY BUTCHER

Butcher listens to punk rock, the revolting bastard, and the language won't make much of a difference — he'd love the Brazilian punk bands with a history of dirty lyrics and censorship such as Plebe Rude, Os Replicantes, Inocentes. However, as with the Spice Girls, he knows a powerful pop teamup when he sees one...

HUGHIE CAMPBELL

He's a classic rock/pop guy, 80s stuff, so he's bingo-ing all the standard "plays on the radio" bands — Legião Urbana, Paralamas do Sucesso, Barão Vermelho... He cries to Epitáfio by Titãs and 100% has dedicated Tarde Vazia by Ira! to Annie.

M.M.

Undoubtedly our family man loves a good pagode — a subgenre of Brazilian samba that comes from a community celebration with food, music, dance, and drinks. He'll go out to dance with Monique to Turma do Pagode and Grupo Revelação's hits. Also, as a fan of rap and Black protest music, M.M. would be really into fundamental Brazilian rap artists such as Racionais MCs that denounce racism and political violence.

FRENCHIE

This guy canonically listens to French trap/rap so there's no doubt he'd get hooked on artists such as Matuê and Teto. However I also feel like he'd be into psychedelic rock and its trippy guitar riffs — which leads us to artists like Raul Seixas, Os Mutantes, and O Padre dos Balões (will never pass on an opportunity to recommend my favorite small band). He'd also listen to Mamonas Assassinas because I think so.

KIMIKO

She has a soft spot for classic musicals, jazz standards, and slow ballads — the samba and bossa nova classics would be a gold mine, from Cartola to Chico Buarque, João Gilberto and Tom Jobim. She'd be obsessed with Carmem Miranda! And I can also see her falling in love with Elis Regina and Marisa Monte's voice. I can also see her jamming to 80s pop that sticks to your head — A Fórmula do Amor by Léo Jaime and Kid Abelha jumped immediately to my head (and it's been there since, send help).

ANNIE JANUARY

Annie is the type to have grown up listening to sertanejo — a very popular genre of Brazilian country music. The classic duos, such as Chitãozinho & Chororó, and especially the movement of female-centered sertanejo led by artists like Marília Mendonça and Maiara & Maraísa. However she probably stopped following these artists around 2019, so anything newer than that (like Ana Castela) "doesn't sound right" and takes her on an angry rant.

so this is a big, long rant about sexism in the idv community bc it's been on my mind lately and i need to put it out there. this is what i've observed after almost four years in the fandom and been stewing on for a long-ass time. if you don't feel like reading an essay on how annoyed some random enby on the internet is, then don't click the read more and just keep scrolling. don't interact with this post if all you're gonna do is get mad; i'm not here to piss anyone off, just make observations. and if this isn't your experience, good for you and please direct me to whatever circles you run in because i need to be there.

so, i've noticed that the idv fandom is extremely shit when it comes to how they treat female characters, and nobody really.. talks about it?? the only person i've ever seen actually discuss it used it as a way to drum up sympathy for ada. which, if you know me, you know really fucking pisses me off. because there are SO MANY OTHER EXAMPLES of sexism in this community, but no, clearly because we have sympathy for a male victim of abuse we're being sexist towards his abuser.

the thing is. there is so much to point to when you talk about how the fandom is sexist. it's very common to see female characters boiled down to just a couple traits. mary?? hot mommy step on me. michiko?? soft and gentle and demure (don't think i won't notice the weird shit about how that's a very common stereotype of asian women btw i see it). demi?? hot and drinks a lot. emma and lily are "uwu mentally ill babies". annie is soft. emily is either an irredeemable monster or a bitch, depending on who you're talking to. patricia is scary and mean. sangria's a girlboss, grace is soft and gentle, martha is spunky. and if you ask anyone their thoughts / ideas on these characters beyond those short descriptors you get nothing. i'm starting to fucking hate the word "girlboss" because it's all anyone says in response to like half these characters.

male characters are given alllllll the nuance in the world you can't talk to an aesop fan without them going into their endless headcanons / theories on why he's the way he is or how he's not actually that bad of a person or how cute he is or whatever. look at norton, or eli, or orpheus, or luca, or edgar, or joseph, or ithaqua, or any characters in that vein, and look at how the fandom treats them. look at the endless fanfictions and character studies and ships and x readers and headcanons. and then look at what female characters get. nowhere near that much.

i feel like margaretha and emily are the ones who suffer the most from this male-centric view by the fandom. they're characters who are inherently intricate, whose actions can't be explained away as entirely good or entirely bad. but that doesn't stop people from actively trying. they're going to act like margaretha wasn't being horrifically mistreated by her husband and just decided to burn down the circus for funsies or whatever. they're going to act like emily isn't trying so fucking hard to help emma and repent for what she's done. neither of them are meant to be read as black-and-white, but people will try because if they have to use more than two braincells on a female character they're going to implode.

meanwhile you get paragraph after paragraph about the intricacies of the argument between luca and alva. you get so many people analysing the relationship between norton and orpheus and how they're both kinda dicks but also both kinda have points. you get endless people defending joseph's actions bc his brother's dead and he's terrified of growing old / forgetting the people he loved / dying. you get so many fucking stories about how y'know, edgar's not that bad actually.

AND I'M NOT AGAINST ANALYSING THESE CHARACTERS!!! idv, especially in recent years, has been doing some great things with character writing. like, fuck 'em, they've got their issues, but they're still really good with some stuff and deserve credit. but don't act like it's not obvious how so many people have overlooked women (and poc, don't think i've noticed people ignoring the intricacies behind william and ganji as characters as well in favour of "himbo" and "bastard who cares", but i'm white so that's not exactly my place to talk) in favour of their favourite skinny whiteboy of the week.

they're that way with older-looking characters, too. if an idv guy has facial hair, you bet your ass he's also getting boiled down to his base traits. jose's an alcoholic, kevin is self-sacrificing and likes women, kurt is a little guy, kreacher is Awful, charles basically doesn't fucking exist anymore. but again not the focus of the talk atm.

it's just. so upsetting. esp. since most of my favourite idv characters are women but everyone i talk to about them is like "oh yeah demi's hot" or "aww annie's such a nervous little baby" or "god patricia's such a cool girlboss". and even when the shit they say is positive in a vacuum it still makes me so upset bc THAT'S NOT ALL THEY ARE!! demi is kind and loving and hardworking in the face of a world that only ever hurt her. annie's life has been an endless stream of pain and heartbreak and the only thing she really wants is freedom. patricia is literally cursed and is trying to find her place in the world.

also. i fucking hate ada but she falls victim to this too. as much as i despise the "you dislike her just bc you're sexist" thing and as horribly uncomfortable as she makes me, don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character is boiled down to how much she "loves" this man. don't act like you haven't seen how her entire character, all of her promise and potential, is forgotten in favour of that fucking trainwreck of a relationship. i bet half the fandom can't tell me anything about her other than her relationship with emil. emil suffers from this too, with his backstory and personality and life of abuse becoming an afterthought, but again, not what we're focusing on.

this is not an isolated thing or confined solely to the idv fandom. this happens in fandoms everywhere. but because idv is so close to my heart i feel like i really need to talk about it. there's so little content of female characters when there's fucking daily content of male ones. and don't get me wrong, i do like male characters. norton is literally one of my favourite fictional characters and i love talking about / analysing him. but i can guarantee a lot of people wouldn't be so interested in him if he was a woman.

sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. mandatory "this doesn't apply to everyone in the fandom" and "if this doesn't apply to you then i'm not fucking talking about you". we were so against the ashley wood collaboration bc of how much he sexualised michiko (and women in general) but like. do y'all really care that much?? bc i really don't think you do.

The moment I stepped out of Theo’s office, a rush of cool air washed over me. My heart pounded with a mix of borderline excitement and thrill, similar to that first illicit sip of alcohol as a teenager. I couldn’t quite put a finger on it, but I felt something different—a strange, unsettling feeling that I couldn't shake off.

Jasper was already waiting outside, his face creased with worry. “Aanya, did something happen? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, let’s get out of here. You can grill me for answers on our way back home.”

“Sure, but…”

“I said, ‘On our way back home.’”

We walked to his McLaren, a sleek car that screamed power and speed. I asked, “Can I drive?”

“No way in hell. This is my baby, Aanya. No offense, but I don’t trust anyone but myself when it comes to driving it.” He hesitated for a moment, then tossed me the keys. “Only halfway to the house. I’ll take it from there.”

My face broke into a grin. I needed an outlet—anything to keep this strange energy at bay. Once buckled up, Jasper asked, “Before we move an inch, I want answers. What’s exactly going on? Heck, I’d believe unicorns exist, but not this. Theo is not capable of showcasing any emotions. Even if you do love him, he won’t be able to reciprocate. Trust me, everyone in our family knows this. Gina and Rebecca are skeptical too. Gina literally laughed out loud, thinking it’s a prank, while Rebecca threatened Theo with bodily harm if she finds out he’s forcing you. We can take him down as a team, if that’s the case. Or we could ask Grandpa Aiden. Since Rebecca is on our team, he’ll be on our team too, and the team with Grandpa’s support always wins.”

I wished I could ask Jasper for help, but the stakes were too high. My brother’s and my dad’s lives were on the line.

“As much as I’m touched by your gesture, it’s not necessary. I really like Theo. The only reason I wasn’t comfortable sharing this with you guys is because I didn’t know how to put it in front of you, especially Gina. But when he proposed last week and I said yes, I knew we’d have to come clean to our families. If you think your family’s skeptical, mine’s out for Theo’s blood. The only reason Dad and Aaron aren’t acting on their instincts is because Mom’s threatened to leave and live with Grandpa Xan in London. Even Caleb’s having a headache with all the drama that’s unfolded.”

“Gods, I wish you’d change your mind, but if you don’t and still want to marry that wanker, you’ll always have mine, Rebs’, and Mom’s support, no matter what. Aunt Mia has been ecstatic since Theo dropped the news. She’s the sweetest and kindest soul besides my Mom. You already know how lovely and kind Grandma Astrid and Grandma Elsa are. They’re already planning changes to Theo’s room to suit your tastes and as for my Dad, he's been your number one fan since you helped him gain points in Grandpa Adrian’s book. You know Aunt Ava even better than I do, she literally looks out for you as a daughter, but I'm not sure how she views your relationship with Theo at this point, given that she's well aware of Theo's...aloofness. And Aunt Ava's opinion would be Uncle Eli's opinion too. Guess we'll have to wait and find out"

He leaned back, closing his eyes. “Grandpa Aiden and Grandpa Levi will ask you questions, though. Don’t know how Uncle Landon sees your relationship, but it’d definitely be something for him to rub in your father’s face. The days to come will be tough.”

“Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll try my best to convince your and Theo’s grandpas that I mean no harm. Besides, you did say Aunt Mia and Aunt Anni are on my team, and by extension, so are Uncle Lan and Uncle Creigh. I’m sure Aunt Mia will handle Uncle Lan.”

“You sound like you already have all this planned.”

“You know me. I’m always prepared.”

“That you are.”

After a lot of bickering, gasps, and shouted directions from Jasper, we finally reached his and Caleb’s house. Jasper made an excuse and left, clearly avoiding a confrontation with Caleb. I saw Caleb standing at the door, arms crossed.

“I know you feel rebellious these days, but trust me, this is the worst time to act like a brat. This isn’t you, Aanya!”

“Just because, for the first time in my life, I’m trying to choose something for myself doesn’t make me a brat. Why is it so difficult for you all to just accept my wishes for once?”

“Oh, the choice where you willingly submit yourself to the Devil’s Spawn? Sue us for actually caring about your well-being!”

“I’m not a kid anymore! You, Dad, or Aaron don’t need to ‘protect’ me all the time. Have you ever thought about how tiring it gets, having your every move monitored and reported back? Or why am I only friends with Gina, Rebecca, Jess, Sierra, and Zoey, who all happen to be either my cousins or somehow related to Dad or Mum? Everyone literally thinks over and over before speaking to me, as if I’m made of glass! So I had to go out of my way and be absurd for once. And by God, am I loving it! At least Theo doesn’t pretend like all of you do!”

I said that in one breath, panic coursing through me. No... no, no, no. I couldn’t lose it, not after I’d been in control for so long.

Caleb sensed this and took my hands in his. “Aanya, Angel, look at me. Deep breaths.”

I breathed in and out, feeling calmer. Caleb held me through all of it, then rushed to the kitchen, returning with my meds and a water bottle. I took the meds and gulped down the water in one go.

“Aanya, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. Knowing you, I’m sure you wouldn’t go through with your engagement without thinking it through. But you also need to know that Dad and Aaron are still super pissed. They will never agree to this.Not to mention Grandpa, I'm not sure if they broke the news to him, you know how protective he is. And me... I won’t stand by and watch my little baby sister throw herself into a pit of darkness. I don’t trust Theo King even a bit. He’ll have to work very hard to gain all of our trusts.”

“I understand and respect that, Cal. I know you’ve always been supportive of my decisions, but I’d appreciate it if you could trust me one more time. I promise I won’t let you down.”

I had to get back the book before the next Bratva meeting. I knew how crucial timings were in our world. One wrong move at the right time and we’d all be looking for shelter. I couldn’t risk my family’s legacy. I’d get back the Black Book no matter what. And once that’s done, I’ll sweep Theo King off his feet, so he knows no one messes with a Volkov—not even the Kings.

The next day, a parcel awaited me at my doorstep, containing an elegant dress, with a note attached.

"Will pick you up around 6 pm today. Hopefully, you’ll be ready till then. Your kingdom awaits their soon-to-be queen. Make sure you make quite an impression.

Your soon-to-be fiancé, ~Theodore King"

Hi so um

So uhhh after a series of unfortunate events I have been thrown back into idv like I got hit by a bus and I am DYING to rp it. Like please I just want to find someone who would rp it with me. So um I'm gonna post some requirements and stuff so you'd know what I'm looking for

Basic premise

So! I am looking for someone to build a world with, mostly! I'm looking for someone who will agree to take on multiple muses and have different interactions between different muses (I.e Emma having an interaction with Emily then having an interaction with Freddy, or alternatively, Emma having an interaction with Emily and Freddy having an interaction with Kreacher. I hope I'm clear enough ahdnsjsj)! I believe world building and au constructing is incredibly fun, even if it's canon divergent! What au we go for can be discussed between us!

Requirements

PLEASE BE 18+. I myself am 22 and would be immensely uncomfortable roleplaying with someone under the age of 18, even if we don't do anything risque.

There's no real literacy requirement, but I'd prefer it if you were to write a few sentences to a paragraph or two! Not too long, not too short! I am fine with one liners and crazy long scrolls at times too, though.

Please discuss your boundaries with me. I don't want to step on any painful topics and I feel like we should be able to respect each other.

Con un cast stellare, che comprende Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis e Jack Black, il film promette di essere una vagonata di action e risate. Sarà all'altezza delle aspettative? Noi speriamo di sì.

Trap (Cinema - 7 Agosto)

Nella prima settimana di Agosto abbiamo anche il ritorno di M. Night Shymalan nelle sale, con il suo cinema unico e assolutamente imprevedibile. La sua ultima fatica, Trap, sembra essere la conferma della natura inaspettata del cineasta, dato che narra di un padre, interpretato da Josh Hartnett, che porta la propria figlia a un concerto di una famosa pop-star, evento che si trasforma in qualcosa di ben più sinistro. Possiamo solo sperare che questo film possa intrattenere e anche far discutere, come solo Shymalan sa fare.

Alien: Romulus (Cinema - 14 Agosto)

Dopo l'acquisizione della Fox da parte di Disney, ci si chiedeva che sorte avrebbe avuto uno dei franchise più importanti della casa di produzione in giallo. Ebbene, Disney ha finalmente messo mano alla saga di Alien, traendone due progetti, uno dei quali è questo lungometraggio, intitolato Alien: Romulus, che porta la firma di Fede Alvarez, regista che ha già lavorato in produzioni horror. Con un giovanissimo cast, capitanato dalla promettente Cailee Spaeny, la pellicola ripropone l'atmosfera tanto amata del primo film della saga e promette di riaccendere la passione per i vecchi fan della saga, ma anche di introdurla ai neofiti. Siete pronti a urlare di nuovo?

MaXXXine (Cinema - 21 Agosto)

Il 21 Agosto arriva MaXXXine, terzo capitolo della saga di X, che vede nuovamente Ti West alla regia e Mia Goth nei panni di Maxxine, la quale, dopo la traumatica esperienza del primo film, si ritrova sotto i riflettori della Los Angeles degli anni Ottanta, luogo dove avvengono delle morti per mano di un feroce serial killer. La Goth capitanerà un cast di tutto rispetto, composto da Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Kevin Bacon e Giancarlo Esposito. Un film per gli appassionati del genere.

Gru e Lucy tornano sul grande schermo per affrontare il cattivo Maxime Le Mal e sua moglie Valentina, appena evasi di prigione, e il film promette di avere una buonissima dose di divertimento.

SERIE TV

The Umbrella Academy 4 (Netflix - 8 Agosto)

Nel panorama seriale, il mese di Agosto si apre con l'attesissima stagione conclusiva di The Umbrella Academy, la quale sarà composta da sei episodi, che vedranno l'epilogo delle gesta degli Hargreeves, che dovranno affrontare le conseguenze degli eventi della scorsa stagione.

Bad Monkey (Apple TV+ - 14 Agosto)

Apple TV+ non salta mai un mese quando si tratta di rilasciare titoli potenzialmente interessanti e uno di questi è sicuramente Bad Monkey, adattamento dell'omonimo romanzo, che vede Vince Vaughn nel ruolo di un detective della polizia ridotto a fare delle ispezioni nei ristoranti, ma una macabra scoperta lo porta a rimettersi in gioco e a svelare un intrigo di corruzione e avidità. Decisamente da tenere d'occhio.

Pachinko 2 (Apple TV+ - 23 Agosto)

A più di un anno dal rilascio della buonissima prima stagione, Pachinko torna con una seconda stagione carica di emozioni e pronta a raccontarci le varie vicende di Sunja, Solomon e degli altri protagonisti. E se il livello è quello che ci è stato offerto nel primo ciclo di episodi, ci toccherà reggerci forte.

Only Murders in the Building 4 (Disney+ - 27 Agosto)

Fresco di nomination agli Emmy, la serie crime-comedy Only Murders in the Building torna con una quarta stagione che promette di essere scoppiettante e, soprattutto, carica di guest stars. Il fantomatico trio composto da Steve Martin, Martin Short e Selena Gomez dovranno questa volta indagare sulla morte di Sazz, avvenuta nella scorsa stagione, in un indagine che li porterà sotto i riflettori di Hollywood.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power 2 (Prime Video - 29 Agosto)

E per ultimo, ma non per questo meno importante, abbiamo la serie più attesa del mese, ovvero la seconda stagione di Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, che verterà sul ritorno di Sauron nella Terra di Mezzo e su come i vari protagonisti affronteranno la minaccia che cambierà per sempre il loro mondo. Fra sequenze mozzafiato, combattimenti e dialoghi corposi, la serie promette di intrattenere tanto come aveva già fatto in passato, se non di più.

What are my IDV ships?

Aight, I’m bored, so here, I’m gonna share some of my favorite Identity V ships! Survivor Edition

1. Naib x Martha - They’re just so cute together, and it lowkey seems like the game ships these dummies too.

2a. Kevin x Helena - Kevin would be super protective over Helena, since she is blind, but at the same time, he lost his past love, and wants to protect the girls as much as he can, making it seem like he’s a 'simp’, ya know?

2b. Andrew x Helena - It just seems like a soft, yet protective relationship. They both are used to the darkness, and Helena could reintroduce Andrew back into the “fun” parts of life, not just death and digging.

3.  Murro x Patricia - I get it, there’s not very many Murro ships. But, this one is super cute to me, since they have similar backstories. Patricia lost her mother and was shunned from her society, when Murro had really bad guardianship and is somewhat shunned from society. 

4. William x Tracy - Smart smoll x Jock toll, what else do I have to say?

5. Norton x Emily - This would be cute, since Emily would care for Norton’s scars if they started to hurt again, and Norton seems like an overprotective guy. Plus, ya know, if the survivors were all in the same manor at the same time, he would probably beat up Freddy Riley. Just an idea.

6. Ganji x Demi - Okay, this is a rare one. It’s just so CUTE! Ganji being the grouchy sports dude who just melts when Demi holds him, or even the other way around sometimes! It’s just very comforting to me.

7a. Luca x Annie - Another rare one! Both of these dorks like to build, probably have trust issues(which they can care for eachothers trust issues) and it makes sense. Annie could care for Luca during his flashbacks or panic attacks, and Luca could help Annie if she’s stuck in a creative block.

7b. Lucky Guy x Annie - Okay, hear me out. The skills. Work. PERFECT together. Along with that, I see Lucky as a shyer, friendly guy, and Annie as a hyperactive sweetheart. Annie would care for Lucky, and he would care back in his own simple ways.

8. Eli x Emma - This one is semi-popular over the web. I know, I know, Eli’s ‘engaged’ to Gertrude, but what if she left him when he got to the manor, so they didn’t have to deal with the sadness of Eli possibly dying, or Gertrude died. We don’t know much about this relationship, so- please respect my opinion, and I’ll respect yours. Moving on, this ship is just..so cute.

9. Melly x Vera(Chloe) - VERY. Very rare. First of all, its cute(i keep saying this HAH). Second of all, Melly could give Vera pollenated flowers and/or honey for her to use in her perfumes, and Vera’s perfumes could attract more bees.

10a. Victor x Margaretha - Marg has been through so many toxic relationships, then theres just- this 6″5- ball of sunshine- Aaa, its just so cute!

10b. Edgar x Margaretha - Both creative beings, they just seem they’d click well. Probably be snotty to eachother at first, but soon warm up to eachother, their relationship being a Semi-rival to lovers thing. Plus I just love the idea of Edgar teaching Margie to paint, then Margie teaching Edgar to dance more!

10c. Mike x Margaretha - Last margaretha one, I promise. I understand this ship/relationship may have some intense and honestly concerning discourse, between if they’re enemies or side-lovers, but sometimes this ship is just comforting to me! They’d probably do little shows together, and maybe even dress up in old costumes just for the  heck of it, ya know?

Had it been any other day of the week, and if Annie weren’t already feeling completely humiliated, she might have found herself distracted by Elias looking down at her. He was tall, handsome, cheeks dimpling in a way that always made her heart stutter in her chest. For one, fleeting moment he’d been wearing her favourite of his smiles – they were all exceedingly gorgeous, but she couldn’t help but find herself endeared by the shy, timid smile that he so often wore in her presence. She wasn’t entirely sure what it was about her that made the boy nervous, his nature always so bright, yet ever so slightly guarded. 

As it was, she found herself pouting up at the brilliant boy, her chest aching, breath shaky as she failed to fight back tears. She hated herself for getting so upset over a boy, particularly one she’d never actually met, but that didn’t stop the tears from spilling down her cheeks at Eli’s question. 

“I’m great,” she assured him, lower lip wobbling as her mouth curved downward into a frown that would put Florence Pugh out of a job. 

She choked out a watery, half-hearted laugh as Eli backtracked, his face scrunching up cutely. The urge to reach up and pinch his sweet little cheeks was fleeting, her unwavering attraction to the boy taking a backseat to her current heartache. 

“It’s okay, sugar,” she mumbled, averting her gaze from his. 

She knew how stupid she probably looked, sitting alone in a gorgeous dress while everybody else had fun, celebrating the arrival of the New Year. Guilt washed over her as she realised Eli had abandoned Matty to come check on her, shame burrowing deep in her gut as it dawned on her that she’d inadvertently spoiled a second person’s night. 

“It’s not important, seriously. I don’t wanna be a buzzkill or anything,” she shrugged, bringing a hand up to clumsily wipe at her cheeks.  

She threw a silent prayer up to both God and her father for the waterproof mascara she was currently wearing, grateful that it wasn’t about to make a mess of her perfect look. The last thing she needed was some low quality iphone photo of her with black streaks trailing down her cheeks making headline news. Honestly, she wouldn’t put it past some moron to see Eli standing in front of her and put 2 + 2 together and make 6, no doubt concluding that he’d just broken her heart or something entirely nonsensical and bizarre. Jaw-droppingly gorgeous as Elias Hewitt was, she was fairly certain she was the last person who would ever catch his eye romantically, and even more impossible to comprehend was the idea that he could ever break anybody’s heart. 

Her phone buzzed again on the table, and a foolish spark of hope coursed through Annie’s chest as she snatched it back up, eyes searching for some sign of Troy lighting up her screen, ever ready with an apology. Her optimism was wasted on the man when a text from her father filled the space instead, a simple Happy New Year, Darling. Have fun with Jackson, little dove. x that should have warmed her heart, but only made her feel even worse for having deceived her parents. 

Swiping the text away, she tossed the phone back down, the device clattering harshly against the wood and to the edge of the table. As entitled as she knew it looked, in that moment she hadn’t a care in the world for her possessions, her mood soured by the night, the New Year announcing itself to her in a way that felt cruel and taunting. 

“Elias,” she announced suddenly, abruptly turning her attention back to the pretty boy in front of her. “Do you think I’m ugly?” 

For a million reasons, it was an utterly stupid question. It probably seemed as though she was desperately fishing for compliments, certain that Elias would be the one to offer them up on a silver platter, but Annabelle’s confidence had taken a beating and, feeling downtrodden and insecure, she wondered absently if she was the problem, and not Troy. He was, after all, a model – it was his job to be gorgeous and desirable, which meant that he also recognised it in others. Perhaps she wasn’t to his tastes after all. 

“I mean, hypothetically, if you were supposed to be going on a date with me – would you bail? Would you take a quick glance at me in person and think fuck no and run for the hills?” 

“Happy New Year!”

Cheers rang out around A Novel Idea as 2024 arrived. Immediately, Elias felt a hand slide though his hair and he easily let himself be pulled into Matty’s kiss. As his lips touched the other man’s, there was that age-old fear that rose up in him, worrying that, somehow, word of this innocent little tryst, platonic as it was, would get back to Ferrari. The team he drove for was built on the foundations of traditionalism, and one of their drivers getting caught kissing another man would, in their owner’s eyes, send those foundations crumbling to the ground. The prancing horse did not need to make political statements apparently, and for some reason Eli’s sexuality would be a “statement” if he opened his mouth about it.

It was easy for him to remember where he was though, and the anxiety in his chest eased with the reminder. A Novel Idea was a safe space, he’d come to realise. Billy didn’t invite people to his party that he thought would go running their mouths. There were no NDA’s to be had, but Eli trusted the people here. Maybe that was stupid and naive of him, but true nevertheless.

He felt his lips turn upwards as he laughed against Matty’s lips. Eventually pulling away from the other man, he gave his best friend a bashful smile, still finding ways to be embarrassed about Matty’s easy love. The other man had quite literally been inside him before, yet Eli continued to blush when it came to the more chaste displays of affection of the other man.

“Happy New Year,” he told his friend, snickering once again when Matty leaned in for another, cheeky kiss that ended up being more of an open-mouthed mess as they both failed to keep their laughter at bay.

“Down, boy,” he warned playfully. He smoothed a hand down the front of Matty’s shirt, looking back up at his friend and raising his eyes when he saw the pointed look he was on the receiving end of.

Tilting his head to the side in confusion, he couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, silently questioning his friend. In return, he watched as Matty’s expression shifted to one of exasperation, prompting Eli to shake his head, puzzled. The two of them had always been rather adept at these silent conversations, particularly when they were younger and a well-timed quirk of Matty’s lips across the dinner table had Eli twitching in his seat, excusing them both so they could trample upstairs and end up tangled together in Eli’s bed.

Right now though, he wasn’t sure what his best friend was trying to tell him, until Matty nodded over Eli’s shoulder.

Narrowing his eyes, he let his eyes linger on Matty for a second before he glanced over his shoulder, following Matty’s eyeline. Realising what - or rather who - Matty had been looking at with absolutely no subtlety, Eli felt his heart pick up double time. 

“Quit it,” he said, trying to catch Matty with his elbow. His friend expertly dodged the jab, and continued to nudge Eli in Annie’s direction.

He’d seen her enter the book store earlier on with Jax, his jaw nearly hitting the floor after taking in the dress she was wearing. It would probably show up on his post mortem under ‘cause of death’, that dress would. She looked nothing short of bloody ethereal, forcing Eli to decide that there was simply no way he could approach her tonight. Besides, she was with Jax and as much as Eli openly adored his teammate, he couldn’t help but feel like there was a distance between them now. Not only because of Jax’s time out after his mid-season crash, but also due to the clumsy slip of the tongue Eli had allowed to happen when he’d gotten a little too tipsy at the Ferrari Gala, where he might have implied that he was glad to see Asher go. He didn’t think Jax was too pleased to hear that.

Right now though, Annie was on her own, and looking none too pleased about it. In fact, she looked downright miserable, the sight tugging on Eli’s heart strings.

“Matty, I can’t,” he protested when his friend gave him another shove from behind.

Still, embarrassed as Eli was to entertain the idea of stumbling his way through a conversation when Annie looked like Aphrodite reborn, he couldn’t really leave her looking so sad, could he? If anything, he could approach her and offer to go seek out Jax. With a sigh, he flashed Matty a defeated look.

“Okay, okay, I’m going!” He held up his hands as he eventually walked away from Matty, noting that Simon had made a beeline over to him to wish him a Happy New Year. At least he wouldn’t be the only one leaving the shop with red cheeks tonight, he noted. 

As he quietly approached Annie, she seemed to sense his presence before she saw him. Or rather, she had mistakenly thought it was Jax who was hovering worriedly nearby. He jumped a little with the ferocity she slammed her phone down, struck into silence so by the time he’d found his voice again, she’d already realised it was him.

Her smile was thin and watery, not at all like the usual trademark Annie Baxter grin she gave him, the one that was sure to reduce his insides to a mess of playground-flutters and molten heat. He tugged one corner of his mouth up in an answering smile before it faded as quickly as it had arrived.

“Hey,” he greeted her, gaze softening into concern. “Annie, are you okay?”

He immediately screwed his face up in regret.

“Sorry. That wasn’t a Michael Jackson reference. I’m genuinely asking.”
