The Platform (2019)

It isn’t enough for your movie to contain symbolism and allegories. It must also say something and give something to those who "don't get it". Even if you somehow miss what The Platform is actually about, it works. Grotesque, frightening, and suspenseful, it’ll make you think too. Even with some elements of the conclusion not quite adding up, it's smart.

Goreng (Iván Massagué) wakes up in a “Vertical Self-Management Center”, a sort of prison/testing institution that places two inmates on each of its many floors. His “partner” Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor) explains that food is delivered by a platform that allows those below to eat the leftovers of those above. As the supplies diminish with each floor, those at the bottom struggle to survive.

The Platform begins with a great, simple premise. Each month, everyone is given a new floor. Also, each person is allowed one item of their choice when they arrive. Poor Goreng chose a book. You know others brought something a little bit more useful in case they wake up on a low floor next to someone determined to survive. For the moment, things are ok. He’s a naive dreamer, his cellmate is a bit of a curmudgeon but he’s street-wise. It makes for a good dynamic as we learn the rules of this place.

Let’s set aside the metaphor and focus on the situation as presented. It’s terrific. Goreng wakes up on a relatively safe floor. What happens next month? Instantly, you’ve got moral dilemmas and tension. The situation gets more complicated the more you learn about the people and the world they inhabit. What security measures are in place to ensure things are “fair”? How can they be exploited? What are the Administration's true intentions? Piecing it together is loads of fun. You try to picture what you'd do if you were in this scenario. The system isn’t fair. You want to blame someone. The people at the top? Obviously but there’s always someone above them. A revolution's got to come. But how?

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia with a screenplay by David Desolations and Pedro Rivero, you're given a lot to think about. Yes, it’s often pretty gross but the stomach churning images are necessary and there’s plenty of humour to make the violence and gore digestible. The brutality helps drive the point The Platform is making. This place gets more hellish the lower you go. Whether it’s the system, the people or a combination of both responsible matters little to those at the bottom. They aren’t in a position to make a difference. Who will step up? Everything serves a purpose, even the aspect of the conclusion that doesn’t quite hold up logically or metaphorically. Film-wise, it does. It’s a big twist that’ll have to itching to go back to the beginning and watch the whole thing again. The Platform is the kind of movie you want to gather around with friends and discuss at length. ⚠️El Hoyo⚠️ Sinopsis: El futuro, en una distopía. Dos personas por nivel. Un número desconocido de niveles. Una plataforma con comida para todos ellos. ¿Eres de los que piensan demasiado cuando están arriba? ¿O de los que no tienen agallas cuando están abajo? Si lo descubres demasiado tarde, no saldrás vivo del hoyo.

Mi opinión: Vemos una gran semejanza con la sociedad actual, una jerarquía social donde los de arriba tienen de todo y más y tiran las sobras a los de abajo. Obvio.

Pero, en esta ocasión hay un punto de inflexión, ya que los cautivos cambian de nivel al azar.

Imagina estar durante un mes en el lugar de Amancio Ortega y al mes siguiente eres una de las personas mas pobres del tercer mundo.

El final suficientemente abierto para dejar varias interpretaciones a la imaginación. Un poco confuso, la verdad.

#Thriller: EL HOYO / THE PLATFORM (2019, streaming on Netflix) — Goreng wakes in a cell centered by a giant pit distending down an immeasurable number of levels. Every day a platform lowers through the floors, granting the people a short passable of time to eat whatever they wish. The more the people above eat, the less the people below receive. This is a movie that relies heavily on the social aspects involved in the desire, need, and desperation for food. It reminded me of first of The Cube, in that it’s a claustrophobic contraption built by some unnamed Authory with a purpose that is unclear. Second it reminds me of the Stanford Prison Experiment, which looked at the roles between prisoners and guards and the power between them. month the people in the hike are moved up or down in the levels seeming at random. Almost without fail, after a person has received the brutality of scarcity in the lower levels, they tend to eat more than their share once they are moved higher up and can access abundance, leaving those below to starve. What makes this movie work is the way the characters are reveal their complexity and depth. It’s not just everyone out for themselves, and people would likely be more supportive if the system didn’t set them up to be otherwise. This character depth made it so I was never really sure what would happen next. I’m not gonna lie. This is not a light hearted story — it’s actually pretty depressing. However, the ending moments provided a slim (very slim) sense of hope, enough that I was able to come away saying I liked this movie. I don’t do movies with no human redemption. El Hoyo Año: 2020 Director: Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia Seguramente ya vieron la película El Hoyo, la cual ha sido muy popular en Netflix en esta cuarentena. Pero qué conclusiones podemos sacar de esta película. Cómo es que cambian de nivel los huéspedes? Qué relación tiene el restaurant? «No hay cambio espontáneo o solidario, algo tiene que suceder primero» Esta es una de las frases de la película, si lo llevamos a la realidad país, podemos concluir que el cambio no se producirá por que siempre habrá alguien que no esté dispuesto a ceder o cambiar. El Hoyo es una especie de cárcel vertical u sanatorio en el caso del protagonista (Goreng) su primer compañero le explica que: Están los de arriba, Están los de abajo y están los que caen. Cada persona que ingresa puede llevar un objeto, el protagonista lleva un libro (El quijote) y su compañero lleva un cuchillo, misma razón por la cual esta ahí. Por el medio de los niveles pasa una plataforma que lleva comida a los habitantes de El hoyo, acá es dónde vemos expresada la realidad del sistema capitalista con el que la sociedad se ha desarrollado, en donde los de arriba siempre tienen más y no les importa dejar para los demás, en cuanto Goreng se da cuenta de esto comienza a gritarle a los de abajo que tomen sólo lo que necesiten y dejen comida para los demás y Trimagasi le pregunta si es comunista y le dice “A los de arriba no le gustan los comunistas”. Además vemos un enigmático personaje llamado Miharu, el mito dice que busca a su hijo, podemos ver a este personaje de dos maneras, como alguien desamparado o como alguien que lucha por lo que quiere. Goreng, en su “viaje” a través de El Hoyo cambiando de niveles, trata de hacer entender a los demás que la comida se debe racionar y así vencer al sistema que impera en este lugar. Los mas filosóficos pueden darle quizás otra interpretación; ojalá compartan sus interpretaciones. ‼️SE DERRUMBO EL GIMNASIO DE EL HOYO‼️ 👉El gimnasio municipal de El Hoyo padeció ayer el temporal de nieve y en horas de la medianoche sufrió el derrumbe de gran parte de la infraestructura. Afortunadamente las personas evacuadas por la intensa nevada tuvieron otro destino elegido el día anterior, por lo que no hay heridos. Lamentablemente el gimnasio municipal de El Hoyo, con 40 años de historia deportiva, social y cultural comarcal, sufrió un impacto muy grande tras el temporal al derrumbarse el techo y las paredes oeste y sur generando un daño total en el sector deportivo.
