I thought now might be a good time to introduce Archie and his relevance to me, particularly as he’s just come through major surgery! Archie’s 47 and he was born in a Psychiatric Hospital in Kent around 1974. It was the first of four admissions to institutions that I would experience throughout my life, my admissions were always as a result of making an attempt on my life, the last admission being around 1991. It’s now 2021, so, progress!The thing about being sectioned and placed in a Psychiatric institution is, that it’s done obviously for the individuals protection but in fact what it does often, is exactly the opposite and causes a reaction to escape for the individual which is counterproductive to their eventual release, ‘One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ springs to mind. Back then men and women were generally kept apart but would sometimes mix through occupational therapy, again back then it was very limited in what was offered. For men it was normally some kind of whicker work which was very basic and mind numbingly dull. Whereas the women were allowed to make 🧸. The staff wouldn’t normally allow the men to do this but luckily for me, one member of staff had the foresight to realise it could be a positive move for me as I was making very little progress at the time and they were right. Because my making of Archie was the catalyst to my eventual release. Until of course the next time. So, Archie is a great reminder of where I’ve come from the things I’ve been through and the struggles and difficulties I’ve overcome, he is my journey and my companion and has always been by my side through all my darkness and he’s a great reminder of my own resilience and strength to carry on despite all the overwhelming obstacles, a lot, self inflicted, that I’ve battled my way through.
