I'm a relatively new follower of yours and after your last post and you mentioning that Joan Beaufort is one of your favourite historical figures I am curious as to who else is on your list of favourites?
Argh sorry I took so long to reply to this, I was away last week so only on mobile. But this is like the nicest thing to ask someone (in my book) so I have really no excuse.Ok so Joan Beaufort’s kind of one of my favourites as part of a group. Her first husband is the Scottish monarch I find most interesting, but the rest of that whole wider family- their daughters, their son and his wife, Joan’s second husband and their sons, the Albany Stewarts, and even further out rank as highly interesting to me, just because that whole period is. And like the entirety of the Stewart dynasty anyway. And the Beauforts too for good measure.Ditto goes for Henry III, Eleanor of Provence and their children in England though I don’t know as much about them (mostly I know about Edward I and I do find him highly interesting even if he was, well, an arse at times). Other than those two major groups, here’s a few that I usually rank highest though:- James I of Scotland (as already said)- Yolande of Aragon (the Best TM)- Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar (as much as for what she represents as the legend around the woman herself)- Mary of Guelders, Queen of Scots- Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd- Henry V of England (for my sins)- Margaret Stewart, Dauphine of France (and like, all the Stewart princesses. And the illegitimate Stewarts. Both of these groups are conveniently forgotten too often.- Owain Glyndwr (I don’t have the accent mark thing on my keyboard)- The man is still a bit of a mystery to me but Hieronymus Bosch’s art is like my favourite thing ever so I’m working on learning about him- And honestly also a tonne of historians in the past, as a craft it’s pretty interesting
Obviously though I have hundreds, I’m sure I’ve missed out figures more important to me here. It’s also very western Europe-centric, which isn’t to say I’m unaware of individuals from elsewhere across history, but in cases of people like Eleni of Ethiopia or Sofonisba Anguissola I don’t feel like I’ve been able to read up enough of them, whether through lack of accessible article in English or lack of time, so I’ve mostly got folks I have a reasonable good knowledge of. Also just all of mediaeval Scotland should go in there with a few exceptions. I’d have to narrow things down by ‘categories’ of historical figures before I got anywhere near a concise list. Sorry for the rambling and thank you again. But back at you, have you any favourites? I love hearing other people’s.
