‘You’re Never Really Alone’ is the new album, out on We Jazz Records, from Brooklyn-based artist Jonah Parzen-Johnson. This collection of eight intimate compositions is for baritone sax & flute, all collectively exploring the spectral landscape of these two instruments in modern jazz. ‘You’re Never Really Alone’ was carefully put together to shed light on a new way of perceiving the core of what music is all about. For Jonah, being connected to those spontaneous communities is the best part of being an experimental artist. He has brought that forth with this album, from the meditative ‘When I Feel Like Myself’ to the jazz standard-like ‘Named For You’. You need this album in your collection.

Grope My Teeth is a song that feels like you kinda just chopped up a bunch of individual songs and stitched them together in various ways. It's this disorienting stumble through a couple of different unrelated ideas that come together and fall apart, entering dazes and being startled out of them.

Boss Metal Zone MT-2, tear-down photos, with schematic.
possibly the worlds most common pedal, the metal zone has had a pretty bad reputation, but I actually like it, in the right circumstance.
the metal zone has a very strong pre-eq that mimics the pre-amp tone of a Marshall or fender. I assume this was intended to give a cheep solid state practice amp the tone of those classic amps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(chart of the frequency response, and schematic of the first stage of the MT-2)
it was common for early solid state amps to be more linear then a fender/Marshall, which have a very pronounced high end bump. (this is a result of the non-linarity of the tone control.) the high end bump can be flattering to a lead guitarist, and necessary to get a screaming hi-gain sound.
if the metal zone is placed before an amp that already has a pronounced hi end, it is going to sound very bad. I prefer to use it directly into a DI box, but it can also be run straight into a power amp with good results.
I'm in the process of modifying this particular pedal, and converting it to a rack mount distortion, to better fit my recording process.

26th May 2024 - So concludes Mass Effect 1 🫡 What a legendary title! A timeless RPG classic, it holds up extraordinarily well. I’m so glad I finally saw it through to completion, and hopefully I’ll dig through the rest of the trilogy throughout the year!

Engineers develop new two-dimensional, low-power-consumption field-effect transistor
A team of electrical and computer engineers at Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, working with one colleague from City University of Hong Kong and another with Fudan University, has developed a new two-dimensional, low-power-consumption field-effect transistor (FET) that could allow smartphones to need recharging less often. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the group describes how they overcame problems with high gate leakage and low dielectric strength that have stymied other researchers looking to create smaller and thinner computer chips. Two of the team members (Ziao Tian and Zengfeng Di) have published a Research Briefing, summarizing their work in the same journal issue. Over the past several years, computer engineers have been searching for new materials that will allow further miniaturization of silicon field-effect transistors. This will enable the addition of more features in phones and other devices without making them bigger. It is also a necessity for the development of 5G devices that will come with AI applications that are still in development.
