If I needed this reference for art clearly someone else might have. An electric stand up bass from four different angles. It may not be the best but it’s a clean photo.

The Smokey Lonesome – Desert Run EP This is the Los Angeles band’s debut extended play & it’s built around the vocal twang of country with a pinch of rock n’ roll in a spare sound by musicians who have played together for 16 years. Recorded in Venice, CA & produced by David Porter (vocals/guitar/percussion) & Natalie Fratino (vocals/electric & standup bass/percussion/Wurlitzer/accordion) the…

gvf headcanon | s/o plays an instrument
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f9a97f9545ca7bf713ddb7156cbc2052/0b5fa7cf08b9c6d7-39/s540x810/37563a7a0150829ed4cc2d2663131ded28d3a245.jpg)
request: Hi! I couldn't find where to do headcanon asks for some reason, but I was wondering if you could do one about if their so played an instrument for the majority of their life? For example I played standup bass in orchestra up until I graduated and now I play electric bass?? Thank you :) xxx
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f9a97f9545ca7bf713ddb7156cbc2052/0b5fa7cf08b9c6d7-39/s540x810/37563a7a0150829ed4cc2d2663131ded28d3a245.jpg)
josh.
i think josh is someone who is amazed by everything, especially the little things (unrelated to the headcanon but i needed to point out the latter). when it comes to music, i feel, no matter what instrument you play and for how long you have been doing it, josh would find your talent amazing and uncomparable. with this being said, i feel he would find it comforting. i mean, his father is a musician and so are his brothers (also himself but on another level, i fear). so, i imagine josh finding your music as a salvation.
i’m not making myself clear so i’ll picture this: it had been horrible, long days, and you still hadn’t been able to see your boyfriend. your lifestyles were so different it was impossible to actually be able to meet up often. you recalled the times you would arrive home and he was asleep on the bed or couch more than you could actually remember the last date you two had. it was a sad reality you had agreed on living, as you were willing to do anything for this man. you two were actually giving up a lot of things for this relationship to work, and for also be able to keep up with your own lives. for that reason you were once finding yourself alone at your kitchen as you made dinner for two, expecting the second plate to be left in the fridge for your lover to heat up when he arrived home. to your surprise, nevertheless, the door swung open, showing josh looking tired. you couldn’t help but sigh, knowing this was all his fault. several times you had asked him to not push himself more than necessary and, as expected, he would never listen. now, as you watched him drag his legs across the living room and towards the couch, you could hear your own words replaying inside your head. you went after him, thinking about what to do next. fighting the urge to tell him “i told you so”, you sat beside his head, as he was occupying ¾ of the couch. in the same silence that had been reigning in the living room, josh made a request.
“love?” he called for you, his eyes closed as he rubbed his temples, probably trying to calm down a headache
“tell me, baby” your voice came out softer than you expected, as the image in front of you was melting your heart
“could you play for me? i really need to listen to you” you knew exactly what he was needing and so, with a big yet shy smile, you obeyed.
while josh lied on the couch, letting tiredness take over his body, you played the melody you knew he adored so much, watching his smile grow with every note played.
sam.
i know this man would find you completely fascinating, the more different your instrument is from his, the more admiration he feels. i see sam feeling and seeing music in a very different way that jake does, i don’t know if it makes sense? like jake seems to feel it in his soul while sam feels it in his brain, which explains why sam is more pretentious (or is more open about it…). but with you, i feel sam would want to hear more from you, and for once would not try to make it about him (not that he always does, i just don’t think he would bring up his bass, if you know what i mean).
i do see him bringing you to the studio with him. these occasions were a bit rare, actually. there was always a bit of possessiveness in sam when it came to you and music; the boys have been granted the chance of hearing you play your instrument once, but sam had decided it was enough. that sweet melody you could play with your fingers, sam had said, it was only meant for him to hear, and not his brothers. josh would always gush about your talent, jake would suddenly suggest you play with them and danny always wanting to hear from you. however, sam was a child when it came to you, and so your music was only allowed to be played when it was only you two. there was always a scent of romance in that, a healthy jealousy that managed to create amazing melodies. and so, like every thursday, you were spending your night locked in the studio with sam, as he held onto his bass while you played around with your instrument. his face was full of concentration, but also of admiration. a shy smile appeared as you locked eyes, while you played the music you knew so well. that face bathed in pride for you was suddenly shifted into a grin of euphoria, as if sam had an epiphany. you stopped the melody right away, misinterpreting his face for disgust.
“what? was it that bad?” you inquired with fear
“not at all, y/n!” he jumped quickly, afraid of being misunderstood.
you watched as he crawled towards you, that expression of fear being mixed quickly with happiness.
“babe, play that again. the last bit” he was so near you, you could hear his breathing perfectly and yet, you played as he requested “that’s it!” he yelled out of nowhere, making you jump too.
in that state of desperation, sam stood up to walk towards a table full of papers. however, before abandoning you for a few seconds, he went back to you, almost straddling your lap as he kissed you passionately.
“you’re a fucking genius, my angel” he muttered as he removed hair off your face and, after hearing you ask what had happened, sam proceeded to explain “i had been missing a melody for a new song, and your magical fingers just gave me the answer i needed”
as he wrote some chords on a sheet of paper, sam turned around with a cheesy smile, with words almost slipping off his mouth.
“i told you, my angel of music, you were made for me”
danny.
i think danny would find you like we find the guys; he would have a hard time believing you’re real. i don’t know, i think these guys are big simps for their lovers, like the type to feel pure devotion for them. with danny, i sense he would find your talent and musical knowledge like something a normal human being wouldn’t be able to perform. and boy, he’s so fucking proud of being your boyfriend.
danny finds a lot of pride in having a partner who, too, adores music like he does. your talent and relationship with music would be danny’s main topic in conversations, bringing up the several occasions in which he was witness to your overflowing musical talent. now, you were visiting the boys as they recorded a live performance. by the first notes, you could tell it was stardust chords. danny had been so excited about playing that song, as he believed it was one of their best works. you couldn’t agree more, and smiled as you admired the artwork they were performing. after the show was done, danny went quickly up to you, embracing you in his arms. time felt as if it had been stopped when your bodies connected again. these moments only happened twice, and the second chance would come later. when everybody had already left, danny insisted you didn’t leave too. you were not planning to do it without him, and it seemed like danny had other plans for the two of you. while the room remained in silence, your boyfriend dragged you towards the little white stage that had been created for the band to perform. the red light was still bathing the place, and so the white stage was no longer painted in that color. you waited as danny grabbed jake’s guitar, checking it was on tune and ready to be played. when your lover realized you were standing awkwardly, he giggled cutely.
“don’t just laugh!” you cried, as danny continued giggling like a kid “what are we supposed to be doing now?”
“ok, ok!” he stopped giggling, and prepared the guitar pick “what chord is this one?”
you only needed danny to play it once for you to smile and respond with confidence, gaining from your boyfriend an expression bigger than pride.
“very good, baby” you watched as he bit his lip “ok, tell me this sequence”
after danny played three continuous chords, you nodded slowly, remembering the sounds and replying, confident though not as much as before.
suddenly danny stopped this weird impromptu exam, running towards the exit and screaming something you couldn’t really comprehend and returning to his original position. you waited for two seconds, and soon the big red room welcomed three very familiar visitors. the rest of the band climbed the short stage, some standing around danny while others stood near you.
“what do i always tell you, that y/n is fucking musically magical? just listen” danny pointed at you, as a sign to keep with what you had been doing for the past minutes. a new sequence, a larger one, echoed inside the room and, when it was over, all eyes landed on you, waiting for your response.
you were unsure whether danny had done it easy for you or you really could tell it right away, but you had never felt so confident before. as the rest of the guys stood in awe, taking in what had just happened, you averted your eyes to find danny’s. his smile was bigger than ever, and you just knew he was fighting the need to close the space separating the two.
jake.
like i said before, jake feels music as much as sam does, and i think these two stand on a different step when it comes to music from danny and josh. like music seems (based on what they show and do) to be something very linked to their soul, and while sam is more rational about it, i think jake feels it deep in his soul.
unfortunately, my scenario with jake is not so different from sam’s, but at the same time it is. there was something jake had been dying to do, but somehow never found the time to do it. the idea had come many many years ago, before he even had the chance to meet you. jake had always wanted to play with his lover. no matter what instrument his significant other played, jake was dying to be able to, foolishly or professionally, play with the love of his life. to do so, he knew he first had to find that someone. thankfully, time brought you into his life and he couldn’t be any happier. though his first intentions were to teach you an instrument, his happiness only grew when he found out you already were a long time musician. it felt like magic, as if life had prepared this gift for him. and so, as soon as you two connected your souls musically, jake didn’t lose time and began planning out his most interesting and most desired date. the moment came right in time, when the guys’ little tour had finished. before you could even welcome jake back home, he had already sat you down at his house. you had no idea he had built a small studio at his place, and not only did you find out that same day, you also were told by your lover that he actually had built it for you. and it was true, he truly had planned it all out; the room was decorated based on his own style and aesthetic but also yours. it really was a mix of both of your souls, as if your spirits had made sweet love and had made the most perfect symphony. in awe you entered the room, only to find an exact copy of your instrument resting next to one of jake’s guitar. you smiled shyly, noticing how red your cheeks were getting. after lighting up a sweet incense, jake took your instrument and handed it to you, later grabbing his own. nothing needed to be said, as you both sat down, facing each other, ready to create musical ecstasy.
“so?” jake started, visibly nervous “what should we play?”
“whatever you desire, baby” you were nervous too, as jake had only been able to watch you perform a couple of times
“maybe something by an artist we both like?” he was sure you had some coincidences in your taste, mostly classic artists
“alright” you were trying hard to hide your excitement as you picked your instrument and took a deep breath before playing a few notes.
jake’s ears jumped instantly, noticing the dovelike melody of his own song. caravel was sounding better than ever, coming from your instrument. for seconds, he was frozen in his spot, as if shock had possessed him. soon, his mind reacted, almost subconsciously, as he joined in right on time. it caught you by surprise, when you heard jake’s honey like voice singing the lyrics josh would mostly scream into the microphone. you adored the difference between the twins, and how distinctive a song could sound depending on the performers. after that one single session, jake began insisting on covering all the songs together, even maybe forming a secret subunit.

High Castle Teleorkestra - The Egg That Never Opened - probably the prog rock tour de force of the year
Art As Catharsis is proud to announce the release of High Castle Teleorkestra’s debut record, The Egg That Never Opened a mind-melting record fusing everything from Eastern European folk, swing jazz, technical metal and much more. Assembled remotely by a roster of acclaimed international musicians, High Castle Teleorkestra (HCT) compensates for unlikely touring chances by turning out enigmatic, immaculately produced recordings. Comprised of members from ground-breaking acts including Estradasphere, Mr. Bungle, Farmers Market, Umlaut and more, HCT’s prodigious musical talent is matched only by their compositional finesse. On The Egg That Never Opened, listeners will be treated to densely layered orchestrations, starkly unrelated genre superimposition, tasteful and energetic virtuosity, a narrative based on the book Radio Free Albemuth by Philip K. Dick, Eastern European folk music set to polyrhythmic death metal, innovative use of odd meters, 50's-style surf guitar ballads, the unmistakable nod to the Beach Boys Smile-era, stunning string sections, a kooky and morphing assortment of oddball synths & lo-fi keyboards from asynchronous eras, final mixes mastered from ¼ inch tape, other-worldly productions of astounding density and intrigue a variety of composition and arrangement styles, and so much more. High Castle Teleorkestra takes the listener on a blustering ride across the universe atop the pink beam of an ancient satellite. High Castle Teleorkestra’s premier single and video, Mutual Hazard is an intense fusion of Romanian folk, polyrhythmic metal, and an other-worldly string arrangement. “This tune is in the 7/8 time signature, not uncommon in progressive and certain folk musics, but played at a blazing 300 BPM, making it very difficult to count and feel,” adds chief producer and bassist Tim Smolens. “Timba Harris (Estradasphere, Probosci) put together a very unique, multi-timbral string section for this tune that adds an almost sci-fi element, something clearly not found in traditional Romanian Folk music! Drummer Dave Murray played a pivotal role in the arrangement and added interesting polyrhythmic metal concepts that make the timing even harder to count. All of this is played atop a more traditional foundation of warp speed accordion, ornamented solo violin, galloping cimbalom, and slapped upright bass. Although Estradasphere has explored a similar amalgamation of styles, there is something magical and new about the way it has come together in this particular rendition.” Gently playful in certain places, exhilarating in others, and even teetering on the brink of cacophony at times, High Castle Teleorkestra’s The Egg That Never Opened is truly a dynamic and engaging listening experience for lovers of avant-garde, experimental and progressive music of all shapes and sizes. Witness and listen as dignified chaos is unleashed upon the world in the Mutual Hazard single and video. Chris Bogen - guitars, keyboards, lap steel (1,4,7,9), melodica (2), noise collages (1, 5, 8, 9) Stian Carstensen - accordion, pedal steel (1,2,4,9), vocals (1), rhythm guitar (10) Timba Harris - violin, viola Bär McKinnon - tenor sax, flute, clarinet, vocals (3,4), keyboards Dave Murray - drums (1, 2, 3, 5, 10) Tim Smolens - standup bass, electric basses, cello, vocals (1, 4, 7), grand piano, keyboards Guests: Sai Boag - Synth (3) Danny Heifetz - drums, vibraphone (4) Pieta Hextall - bassoon (4) Luke Kirley - trombone (1), tuba (1, 2) Giani Lincan - cimbalom (10) Monica Ludekens - french horn (4) Vinnie “Saturn” Metts - drums (9), vibraphone (8) Caitlin O’Connor - vocals (1, 3, 5, 6, 7) George “GoPo” Phillips - noise collage: alligator people (8) Rory Reagan - drums (2, 6, 7, 8) Federico Randazzo - tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet (1, 7) Adam Stacey - accordion (7) Jason Usry - noise collage: weirdy phaser (8) Jarle Vespestad - extra drums and percussion (10) Antonie Veskovski - vibraphone (8) John Whooley - tenor and alto saxophones (10) Georgi Yanev - lead violin (10) David Dines - Illustrations and Layout Casey Brinegar, Kevin J. Song Review(s): Yonder Mountain String Band - “Candyman” and “For What it’s Worth”
Yonder Mountain String Band beat a Dead Buffalo Springfield with varying results.
Recorded on a hillside, the band’s versions of “Candyman” and “For What it’s Worth” spotlight the plusses and minuses of converting folk songs into bluegrass numbers.
Switching instrumentation, but otherwise leaving the song as-is, the quintet adds sparkle to the Grateful Dead’s “Candyman.” Featuring guitarist Adam Aijala on lead vocals and in shimmery harmony with bassist Ben Kaufmann and fiddler Allie Kral, YMSB’s kinship with GD is obvious.
The group takes the same tack with “For What it’s Worth” but with Kaufmann switching from standup to electric bass and taking over lead vocals. Where “Candyman” is a gem, this one is just a stone; despite Nick Piccininni’s spectacular mandolin solo, the song is not particularly well-suited to bluegrass rendering.
Grade card: Yonder Mountain String Band - “Candyman” and “For What it’s Worth” - A/C-

More Delfest OEB Recommendations
Marty O’Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra – “Firmament”
DelFest - OEB Score: 7
Pairs Well With… John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Ray LaMontagne
Marty O’Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra hail from Santa Cruz and bring a dose of California psychedelic to their 2018 release, Stereoscope. O’Reilly plays electric and resonator guitars with his band punctuating these songs with fiddle, sweepingly synth chords, and standup bass. Some of the songs are fully developed orchestral pieces such as “Firmament,” which features outstanding percussion, psychedelic riffs, and moody, introspective vocals which bring to mind Glen Hansard and Ray LaMontagne. The band does do some traditional numbers but their newest work is complex and to some extent, experimental so this is a band you really have to sit and pay attention when they are playing. They have a late Sunday afternoon set so hopefully folks will be in the mood to settle down and listen.
youtube
Serene Green – “Dusty Pictures”
DelFest - OEB Score: 7
Pairs Well With… The Del McCoury Band, Otis Gibbs, Yonder String Band
Serene Green does a number of things quite well. They are young but already excellent bluegrass musicians who can take traditional bluegrass numbers and give them an upbeat twist. Their first full length album, “To Whom It Pertains,” features ten original songs written by the band. There are some classic bluegrass themes – whisky, brushes with the law, and a cheating woman but the lyrics and vocals feel fresh and authentic. Favorites include “Dusty Pictures” which evoked the storytelling power of an Otis Gibbs and “Don’t Let Me Fall” with elements of gospel. Serene Green can also be clever and quick which provides some variety. Serene Green spent their first DelFest not on the bill but making the rounds of campfires. This year their gumption and talent have earned them a place on the bill.
youtube
Lindsey Lou – “Roll with Me”
DelFest 2019 - OEB Score: 8
Pairs Well With… Cat Clyde, Sierra Hull, Alison Krauss
Lindsay Lou shifts from ethereal to smooth to silky to really belting it out depending on the song. Her vocal and musical talents are on fine display on her fourth album, Southland, which dropped in April 2018, her first without the added & the Flatbellys” although some of her bandmates remain (including her husband, Josh Rilko) The album branches out from her prior bluegrass inspired folk to include pensive folk, twangy country, piano bar jazz, old-school R&B, swampy soul. Although the band says the album was born from some tough times, the songs have some peppy earworms. “Roll with Me” is a standout -- a jazzy soul country tune that remains listenable and fun on repeated listens. Lou explains that she was born to Missouri coal miner but the family moved to Michigan when she was very young. She has always been surrounded by music and activism. She recently relocated to Nashville, returning to the Southern roots of her music. In the words of famed bluegrass musician David Grier, “Lindsay...sings the way you would want to if'n you could. Effortless seemingly. Simply mesmerizing. Riveting! Don't miss the musical force that is Lindsay Lou.” From our review, we agree.

Stuff from the Elvis Costello concert before I forget
-He came out on stage in a big funny hat and kept taking it on and off randomly between songs.
-He told a lot of funny and long-winded stories, the most interesting of which was when he talked about staying the night in a hotel Sam Cooke had allegedly died in and thinking he had faintly heard someone singing "Cupid", but it was just the people in the next room fucking!". My favorite part of this was hearing him actually sing a bit of of the song, I'd love to hear him do more covers.
-"As Chuck Berry said 'anything you need they got it right here in the USA'"
-At the end of one song he brought out a megaphone and used it to sing into the microphone? And then ended the song by turning on the siren on the megaphone? And it somehow went to the beat?
-Speaking of weird audio tricks, he used two different microphones for most of the show. One that was normal, and one that made his voice all crunchy like an old-timey radio. He would sing certain lines into this second microphone for dramatic effect, and it sounded great. Later he got a third microphone, this one appeared to be an actual old-timey radio mic, so he was literally standing there with three microphones. Wild.
- After introducing it as a song off "Cuban Model", they played a totally different version of Brilliant Mistake that was in minor key and sounded really cool, and then it turned into a mashup with "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (the 1930s jazz song not the green day song)
-After making a joke about girls screaming when they come out on stage, but in a terrified way, he said he would play a special song for the last day of the tour and played Accidents Will Happen. It was a slower version with a lovely Steve Nieve piano opening before the rest of the instruments launched in.
-He sang the Roy Orbison version of the Comedians! This was really exciting to me as I love that song and I never expected him to do anything off Goodbye Cruel World. And he nailed the insane vocals! Honestly Elvis Costello is probably one of the best rock vocalist I've ever seen live, the way his voice fills the room.
-He did a weird little one leg steppy dance thing, but only on the first and second song only for some reason
-Davey Faragher on standup bass. It was super cool to hear this on multiple songs, especially on one were he started with standup bass and switched back to electric bass for the ending.
-people singing along, but only for the most popular songs, and then being off because Elvis sings so jazzy. It was amazing just to hear so many people knowing the lyrics to these songs.
-They played the new single live, which was great because that song slaps.
-Elvis told a very funny story about being a young catholic boy and doing his first confession and, not knowing what the word meant, confessing to adultery. He then highlighted the irony of that since he later had so much fun doing that sin, and hoped confessing to it so early would mean he wouldn't have to spend so many years in purgatory.
-I really love his long-winded stories, which were both comedic and also just kinda rambling and rich with detail. I feel like he put little nods to his songs in them.
-Ending on What's So Funny Bout (Peace Love and Understanding), which made me cry because I first heard him sing that song live in 2019 and it's been a long year

@xkillmcnger hi jay!!! That’s so cool that you’re a bike mechanic and studying to be a music teacher. How much longer until you’re certified? And when did you start doing political outreaching? It’s so incredible that you’ve taken the time to visit a population that gets overlooked and low visibility unless it’s like, terrible profiling. ALSO WTF 9 INSTRUMENTS PLS LIST THEM ALL I CAN ONLY PLAY THE RECORDER AND JINGLE BELLS ON THE PIANO 😂😂😂😂
