Fankidsaw23 | Day 2: Favorite Duo | By @endlessly-cursed
Of course I had to do the Immortal Twins! Ignore the part where they are each others mortal nemesis and have been killing each other over 400 years 🤡 besides that, they have one of my fav aesthetics. Luckily, this one somehow doesn’t have blood or fire in it!

The Phoenix Archives
Entry 1 - Silent Night
Semele belongs to @endlessly-cursed 💕
London, England - December 17th, 1997
She watched as the snow fell gently outside the living room window in the darkness of the evening. It was completely silent, the only sounds that could be heard was the resonant ticking of a grandfather clock on the opposite side of the room and her own quiet breaths.
She had white hair and her face was wrinkled from the passage of time, over eighty years in fact. The woman currently rocked back and forth in her rocking chair. Her eyes wandered around the room taking in the familiar sights of her house. The Christmas tree was the only source of light in the darkened room, its warm lights throwing a dim halo of light onto the nearby cold and empty fireplace. Dozens of picture frames were strewn across the mantle above it, the smiling faces of the woman’s children and grandchildren looking down at her. Her eyes then darted towards the front door, a gleaming golden wreath peeking back at her through the frosted glass.
The woman was alone in the house tonight as her family were away on holiday. She would normally be in bed at this time. However, tonight was different. Tonight she sat and waited.
The time passed slowly and silently. The rhythmic ticking of the clock and the dancing flurry of the snow lulled her. The clock read ten minutes past nine when the woman’s breaths slowed and her eyes drooped. The darkness took hold for what felt like forever and also no time at all. Before long, the grandfather clock chimed the new hour. The deep echoes stirred her from her sleep, her eyes flicking open and closed repeatedly as she roused.
It was a few seconds before she noticed the change within the dark room. A shadowed figure now stood in front of the fireplace, his back to the woman as he inspected the pictures.
Not even the darkest shadows could conceal the identity of this man from the woman. His long white hair shone through the darkness, mirroring her own.
“Hello, my daughter,” his deep voice finally broke the peaceful silence of the evening seconds before he turned around to face her.
A chill ran down her spine as her fathers cold eyes met hers. His face was sharp and handsome and had none of the wrinkles hers had. The last time she saw him was nearly fifty years ago and yet he was identical. It was like looking at a memory of the past.
“I knew you were coming,” Esmee Amaranthine’s voice was hoarse as she spoke to her father.
Eme answered with a deep chuckle, his hand raising up in the air as his eyes scanned the photo he currently held.
“Cute family. A shame you didn’t invite me to the wedding.”
“I would have, but you were too busy that day being locked up in Azkaban. And every day since.”
A chuckle escaped Eme’s lips, or was it a hiss? His mouth curled into a smirk but there was a hint of annoyance and anger behind his usually indifferent eyes.
“When I finally arrested you and threw you in there, I always knew it wouldn’t hold you forever.”
“It was a worthy attempt. You even went so far as to recruit your children and grandchildren to your cause. I recognized them instantly when they would come for inspections.”
“I guess fighting you runs in the family. Aunt Eleanor would agree,” Esmee replied flatly.
A silence stretched out again, the ticking of the clock taking over the room. Esmee took in her fathers face, her mind predicting what he would say next.
“They are far away from here. Don’t even think you could find them, I hid them well.”
“I guess we’ll see about that,” he shrugged coolly and placed the frame back on the mantle.
“You don’t scare me, you know. You never did. I knew you were coming for me. I’ve had fifty years to make peace with it,” Esmee stated, her eyes trailing one last time around her house. The Christmas decorations twinkled brightly, giving her comfort. Her eyes lingered for just a few seconds on the pictures behind Eme. “If you are going to do it, then do it.”
“Oh, you don’t get to rush this,” Eme grinned as he walked forward, his hand reaching into his coat.
The North Sea - Twelve Hours Earlier, December 17th
Eleanor watched Azkaban disappear into the horizon from her position on the deck of the Jörmungandr as they raced away. She didn’t know where they were going, but she almost wished she was still in there.
“What’s wrong? I thought you would be glad to be away from that hellhole,” Kaari called out from his spot at the bow of the ship.
“You have no idea what you have done,” she muttered, her hoarse voice almost lost over the crashing of the waves.
“What do you mean?”
“My brother. They will release him and he will come after me.”
“He will have to find us first.”
Eleanor could tell there was fear in his eyes that he tried to hide with a smile. She was good at reading people.
The ride was quiet after that, Kaari taking occasional worried glances at his passenger. It wasn’t until a few hours had passed that Eleanor’s tormented and confused mind started to remember the events before her capture.
“Wait! Do you know anyone named Esmee by any chance?”
“Esmee? I don’t believe I know her. Unless you are talking about that gorgeous redhead I met in a pub once,” Kaari grinned before seeing the scowl on Eleanor’s face. “But I doubt you are.”
“No, she would be around eighty or so. I don’t even know if she is still alive, but if she is you need to find her immediately. She needs protection.”
“What, why? Who is she?”
“It doesn’t matter. Just make sure she’s safe. Eme would want to kill her when he gets out.”
“Alright. Once we get to Skalafell I’ll contact the Resistance and get someone to find her.”
However, Eleanor didn’t look convinced. She hardly knew this man and put no trust in this Resistance. She owed them nothing for breaking her out so who’s to say he would keep his word?
Skalafell, Norway - December 17th, 1997, 6:38 PM
The wooden floorboards creaked under his boots as Kaari Arcano quickly dashed towards the fireplace in the kitchen of the Arcano house. With a flourish of his hand and a wave of his wand in the other, floo powder hit the stones and ignited. The flames roared from green into a scarlet red as the magic from Kaari’s wand activated a spell. Only a few seconds passed before the flames shifted and formed a face he knew all too well.
The beautiful face of Semele Thorne stared back at him through the blaze. He had to admit, she was twice as attractive when her lips and eyes were made of crimson fire.
“Calling me back so soon, Arcano? Once wasn’t enough for you? I thought you only did flings. I must have really made an impact on you,” she teased with a playful smile.
“This is strictly business, Ms Thorne. I have a job for you.”
Semele’s eyebrows shot up at the formal address, “Is that right? Why come to me?”
“Let’s just say I trust in your skill set. You are one of the most skilled people in combat and information gathering I’ve ever met. Well, besides me of course,” he added with a smirk at the end, dropping the formality and giving in to her charm so he could flirt for just a second.
“You flatter me, Arcano,” she replied with a sarcastic swoon.
“I should warn you, there is a chance you might run into a very dangerous individual. Do not engage with him under any circumstances. This is strictly a locate and retrieve mission.”
“Got it.”
“In fact, you don’t have to take the mission if you don’t feel comfortable with it. This man should not be underestimated. You will die if you fight him,” Kaari’s face suddenly became serious.
“I’m in,” Semele didn’t hesitate. “So who’s the priority?”
Esmee’s House, London, England - December 17th, 1997, 10:15 PM
The house was dark as Semele Thorne waited in the shadows across the street. Her sharp eyes narrowed and scanned her regular scouting pattern. There were no lights or signs of movement inside, nor anything similar on the nearby houses. The front door was closed and so were the windows. There was no obvious damage to any part of the house. No people walked along the street. Now was her chance.
She slipped out from her hiding place and briskly crossed the street, her head down and hands in her pockets as she tried to remain discreet. She would jump the fence and loop around to the back of the house and enter from there.
A few seconds later, after deftly unlocking the window with a wave of her wand, she found herself standing in a darkened kitchen. Semele waited and listened for any sounds of movement within the house but all she heard was silence. So she decided to enter the next room.
“Fuck,” she breathed, barely a whisper to break the silence.
A figure sat slumped in the rocking chair on the far side of the living room. Even from this distance and in low light, Semele’s deft eyes could still see the trails of blood down the woman’s face.
Immediately, her wand came out and she scanned the room top to bottom and left to right. Once she was certain she was truly alone, she quietly crept closer to the woman.
This was indeed Esmee Amaranthine. She was too late to save her. Blood dripped from her eyes, nose, and ears but there was no other obvious sign of injury. Semele knew this was indicative of the cruciatus curse. She was tortured with extreme pain until the stress on her system killed her. The blood itself was still bright red and fresh, so she must have just missed it.
Semele sighed deeply, shaking her head and hanging it remorsefully. What a terrible way to go. Kaari was right, the man who did this was dangerous.
She stood up and looked around the room again, this time taking in the small details of the woman’s personal life. The elegant grandfather clock ticked away as Semele looked upon the faces in the photos. Esmee had a wonderful and full life by the looks of it.
A thought struck her and Semele grabbed a picture frame, the same Eme once held only minutes ago. She flipped it over in her hand and undid the back, pulling the photo from its frame. She smiled as she found the names of the people within the photograph inscribed upon the back in loopy cursive handwriting.
Semele put the frame back down and tucked the picture safely into her coat pocket. She would report Esmee’s fate to the Resistance and then try to locate her family. They deserved to know.
Then, as quickly and quietly as she arrived, Semele Thorne left the house and disappeared into the cold winter night.

The return of the Couslands to Highever, after nearly seventy years of absence, was greeted with shock by its people. The banns and freeholders of Highever were anxious to meet Bryce and swear allegiance. Many of the freeholders along the Amaranthine border came to swear fealty to the new teyrn instead of their arl, adding further complication to the proceedings. Teyrn Bryce spent four months receiving oaths and taking possession of his ancestral home, and every day without fail he sent a letter to lady Eleanor—sometimes more than one a day. One letter was reportedly just a stick-figure drawing of him sitting in Highever's great hall looking bored.

overview: as the eldest son of house cousland ( the ruling family of the teyrnir of highever ), fergus was sent to ostagar on a scouting mission to assist king cailan's efforts against the coming blight. in his absence, arl howe laid siege on the cousland castle, killing fergus' parents as well as his wife and child. only his sister, alys, escaped the attack, but was conscripted into the grey warden order as a result and likewise sent to ostagar. fergus had been reported missing shortly before the battle, and for weeks he was presumed dead. however, his scouting unit had been ambushed and fergus was found by a chasind who tended to him in his lengthy recovery. it wasn't until the landsmeet that fergus was finally able to reunite with his sister and learn of his family's tragic fate. after she ended the blight, fergus took his place as teyrn of highever, and hopes to rebuild his fallen house.
verses
main : for all plots centered around the games. i'm pretty open to playing around with different scenarios and aus ( i.e. fergus being picked up as a companion in origins, rescued by someone else in the wilds, etc. ) but unless plotted otherwise, the default is that he becomes teyrn, his sister is the arlessa of amaranthine, and he enters an arranged marriage with evelyn trevelyan ( verdraste ) who is also my default inquisitor, unless ofc i'm writing with other non-trevelyan inquisitors.
fantasy : very easy to drop fergus and house cousland in any fantasy setting !! so this may be the primary choice. the gist remains relatively the same. his land is on the stormy coast of whatever country applies, and default is that his family is recognized as being second in power to the crown, or close to it. they're known for their highly adept soldiers ( great for muses who need allies & reinforcements ! ), strong network of spies, and breeding and raising mabari warhounds. more than likely, fergus succeeded his father after a similar tragedy, but we can play it by ear.
regency / bridgerton : fergus is the eldest son of the duke of highever. given his family's legacy in the military, he voluntarily fought in the napoleonic wars, but sustained injuries that left him incapacitated and unable to return home for a few months. during his recovery, his estate was infiltrated by an unidentified murderer who killed his parents, but luckily did not find his sister. after returning home, fergus steps in as the new duke, and is being pressured into finding a wife soon. understandably, this is currently the last thing on his mind. he's besties with benedict and anthony ( <3 ).
dossier
name. fergus cousland titles. teyrn of highever ( addressed as "lord cousland" ) pronouns. he/him age. 27 (da:o), 37-40 (da:i), 47 (da: veilguard) origin/nationality. ferelden etymology. human noble / warrior of the champion class sexuality. bisexual alignment. lawful good, fealty to the ferelden crown or his sister
relations. alys cousland (sister, alive), bryce cousland (father, deceased), eleanor cousland (mother, deceased), oriana cousland (first wife, deceased), oren cousland (son, deceased)
height. 6'1" build. herculean, defined but not chiseled; strong like a bear, not a pretty statue; just enough softness to make for an excellent hugger (also he has great tits idc idc) hair. dark brown, curly eyes. hazel, variety of browns and honey tones scars. riddled with them. he's a tank who battles in the frontlines and take critical hits. his body is a testament to this. he wears them with pride, aside from the worst one : a large crescent shaped gash across his abdomen from the battle of ostagar. he had to cauterize the wound to avoid bleeding out. the chasind took care of the rest when they found him, but not even magic could heal it all the way. scents. petrichor, sea salt and cypress
known languages: ferelden, and most other languages from across thedas. it was required in his noble studies, but frankly he is sorely embarrassed to admit he has not retained most of them and will butcher the conversation on more than a few accounts. his avvar is pretty great though, thanks to aerick, an exiled avvar/highever guardsman, originally from kirkwall, who mentored him through his youth.
abilities / skillset
* weapons master. proficient with most weapons (i.e., shields, halberds, crossbrows, axes & mauls). he'll often carry 2-3 depending on the situation and his position in the battlefield, but his sword is the most consistent choice. dual wielding it with a shield or a maul crafted in the shape of two mabari jaws is his other consistent choice.
* great tactician. by the time we get to da: origins, fergus pretty much functions as a commander in his father's stead. he led the forces of the northern ferelden banns and strategized the battle alongside king cailan, loghain and duncan.
* superior survival skills. again thanks to aerick, but, as an outdoorsman who hated being cooped up in the castle, these lessons were mainly through fergus' insistence. he's always taken a great interest in hunting, as well as aerick's avvar roots, so aerick would sometimes oblige fergus and his friends by guiding them through long hunting treks in the mountains, to learn how to hunt, set traps, and survive more practically in tougher terrains. eventually, he made a habit of frequently hiking at his own leisure despite protests from his mother, so at this point you can throw him in the middle of anywhere and he'll be quite capable and adaptable.
* basic nautical skills. thanks to his oh-so-fun summer weeks spent with grandpa fearcher on a warship :))) old man put your boy through it, but he came out with callouses a plenty, knowing the basics of rigging, how to tie excellent knots, star navigation, etc.
restrictions
* speed. he is meant to be a powerhouse, and is fast but only to a degree. when faced with someone of the rogue class, this could very well be to his detriment if he can't manage to get in a good hit that knocks them into next week.
* post battle of ostagar. his right leg was broken and poorly set when he was found by the chasind, and while healed, it does still fail on him if he exerts himself too hard. he also suffers from ptsd which may compromise his focus while in action. his combat days are much more limited because of this, but he's still a tactician and inspires high morale in the ranks where he can.
* politics. he hates everything about it. while a warm and generally charming person, he cannot abide to be disingenuous and lacks the patience to engage in shallow or false conversations. he's a man guided by his heart, who acts more quickly than he thinks, and will often be brutally honest if there's someone or something he doesn't like. regardless of political consequence. one of the reasons why alys was thought to be better suited for the role of teyrna.

so here is a little rundown of my dragon age verses. they will be expanded on with the new carrd, but since i am trying to reach out & write with new partners i definitely want to put them somewhere accessible.
note: i have verses for other fandoms, this just covers his main timeline & aus within it. i will make a different post detailing potential au's to explore!
by default, ellis will be married to @softersinned's astoria, who is also the inquisitor in his world state. if i'm writing with another inquisitor or someone i'm shipping with / going to ship with, that will change!
highever. anything that happened before the fifth blight. ellis is the lively & hard headed secondborn son of bryce & eleanor cousland. he fills his head with stories & songs of legends past, rarely looking to his own future & what will come of it. during this chunk of time, he's betrothed to astoria & they spend their summers in highever together.
origins. decisions. ellis is one of the two wardens that survived loghain's betrayal at ostagar. his decisions are listed in the link above, but it's also worth mentioning that the events of kinolch / walking in the fade that way as a nonmagic user affects ellis like a bad mushroom trip. it leads to a lot of bad decisions regarding how he handles his relationships & decisions... not that he would ever admit that. i love, love dual warden verses w other HoF's!
origins. (au) if you are not a fan of dual warden verses, ellis can be found in lothering as a rogue companion!
ellis doesn't love magic bcs of the propaganda he grew up with. but he is stupid & impulsive so he drinky drinky the alchemical concoction to get warden powers
he & astoria hit a very rocky patch when he discovers she has been a mage & keeping that secret from him. they travel together, but things are tense & ellis takes her self-preservation as a personal spite.
he romances morrigan & partakes in the dark ritual. for years i have been saying that their love was rooted in survival & long-term, i think they would have had a lot of issues. he viewed her as a forward rejection of the values that had failed him. i think she fell in love w him in passing, on accident.
awakening. at the end of the blight, ellis is gifted the arling of amaranthine & is named hero of ferelden. however, he is not convinced it's over yet - which is true. the darkspawn aren't dispelling like they should & now he's obsessed w finding a way to keep them from causing any more damage than they already have. he hesitantly allies himself w the architect, thinking that together they might be able to find an end to the blight ( he's fucking delusional <3 )
witch hunt. ellis is obsessed with finding morrigan & getting the details of the dark ritual. he doesn't believe it when he finds her, not really. at this point in time it's not uncommon for him to be trapped in delusions, hallucinations, general steps out of reality. he doesn't believe that they have a son until she's already stepped through the eluvian & after that kieran becomes one of his best well-kept secrets. morrigan is no longer his priority, instead dreaming of his son. trying to find his son.
during this time he & astoria reconnect & he allows her to stay with the grey wardens to keep her out of reach of templars. during this time, they grow close & walk parallel journeys processing their traumas. they're drawn closer over those journeys & come clean about their feelings w new understanding of another & themselves from the blight & what's transpired since.
da 2 ( au ) following a few leads via avernus & the first warden, ellis leaves ferelden to follow leads relating to extending the lifespawn of blgithed individuals ( WIP )
in between. any time in between witch hunt & awakening. ellis is building the ferelden grey wardens back up, with an emphasis on ferelden. he'll take anyone from anywhere but tries to inspire loyalty to his home, to their home. he gets lost in the legends of what he did during the blight as well, killing the archdemon in what many thought must be glory. sometimes he thinks it might be glory too. then, he remembers all the blood. it's hard to remember the details between what he experienced & what people tell him.
it's during this period of time he also seeks out help / eventually becomes medicated for his emotions ( i want to rewrite my posts abt it w new perspective, but ellis is schizophrenic. he does deal w bpd. he also juggles ptsd & ocd related to it. )
he & astoria also get married during this time, following avvar traditions! " the groom kidnaps the bride from her home. if he does this without the permission of her / her family, or without her cooperation, he can be beaten to death by her or her family. she is also permitted to resist as much as she wants. she then ties knots into a cord and sings a hymn to the lady of the skies, and he unties the knots as she sings. the number of knots he's untied by the time her song finishes is the number of years they stay married " - from our chat abt it
inquisition ( main ) astoria is at the conclave & is eventually fashioned to be " the herald of andraste ", the inquisitor. he sets out to join her soon as he can, but with demons pouring out of the sky tavel isn't exactly easy. he arrives shortly after the fall of haven & thinks he is too late, finding astoria in the snow on the path to skyhold after fighting corypheus. he is in skyhold as the inquisitor's arm candy husband & advisor. he's also constantly got his eyes peeled for any threats directed at his wife & tries not to stray far. he hates god, god hates him so he thinks the cocnept of herald of andraste is the funniest thing he's ever heard, but admires his wife for utilizing it to serve her goals
morrigan drinks from the well & ellis is entrusted w more of kieran's safety. he gets to know his son during this era & caring about the outcome of the world again.
inquisition ( alt ) upon hearing the calling, distant & off tune, ellis knows something is wrong. his other wardens can't hear it, but he can & when they are summoned to orlais, he doesn't call. the orlesian wardens stop responding to his letters, the scouts he sends to investigate don't come back & he begins to worry. when the inquisition forms, ellis see's an opportunity to ally his remaining wardens with what is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful ( & potentially fanatical, depending on the approach ) military powers around. he offers the assistance of his wardens without disclosing why, though he eventually must come clean. if accepted, he acts as an advisor & potential companion to the inquisition!
in either version, ellis is probably causing more problems than he's solving. he's not politically suave & in the alt verse, he's got a personal agenda he is trying to serve.
if ellis & morrigan were to reconnect as friends or otherwise, it would likely be here in the timeline.
veilguard. ellis is brought in to advise the veilguard on archdemons, as he the only person to have ever killed one & survived. this, however, does very little good when every rule in the book has changed. he stays to protect the world his son will grow up in the best he can. his lifespawn was probably extended by blood magic / other measures taken to extend his life ( wip - still playing the game. )
#ooc.#there is SO MUCH MORE information than what i've put here#but this is like a solid rundown i think#since so much of my carrd info is outdated ??#i am also realizing tht i need to go to bed so i might revisit this after some sleep / clean it up some#verses.

THE BETRAYED; part one of hero
BOOK ONE ; hero
Elissa Cousland is the only daughter of Bryce and Eleanor, and comes from Highever. Her family has owned the Teyrna for centuries. That is, until one fateful night that changes the course of everything. Elissa finds herself being thrusted into something more than she ever bargained for.

THE BETRAYED ;
A Friend Becomes an Enemy
_______________________________________________________
THE CITY OF HIGHEVER HAS BEEN OVERSEEN BY THE COUSLAND FAMILY FOR CENTURIES. The current Teyrn was Bryce Cousland, who ruled Highever with his wife and two children by his side. As an independent city, they had an army at their disposal which was why he was calling for arms. He also had the men Amaranthine by his side. Bryce had his friendship with Arl Rendon Howe for this alliance. A part of him had been itching for the day he would ride into battle, another not so much. He was getting older now and a grandchild thanks to his eldest child. Fergus was also going into battle with him and he couldn't have been any more prouder of his son. As for his daughter, he and Eleanor had agreed that she should remain in the castle and take care of things whilst they were away.
Elissa Cousland, however, had other ideas. At the age of twenty-three, she had managed to dodge any marriage proposal that came her way. It made her mother so angry which amused her to no end. At five foot, three inches tall, Elissa was considered a beauty of her time with olive skin and bright blue eyes. Her dirty blonde hair was swept up into an elegant bun, as to keep within the current style. She did, however, replace the traditional dress with heavy armour that covered her figure and kept men from glancing her way. None of the knights bothered to chat with her anyway, save for the occasional ‘my lady’ or ‘lady cousland’. Any kind of flirting was improper for an unmarried woman of her status. People often asked why such an elegant young woman wasn’t wed yet and she would laugh at that. There was a simple explanation for this; Elissa was more into battles and a sword to waste away in such fancies. Marriage had never appealed to her and she thought that, with her brother being married, nobody would bother with her. Her mother, however, had put it upon herself to find suitors wherever she could. Eleanor was currently entertaining Bann Loren’s family and made every opportunity to mention his eldest son. Dairren was also her father’s squire and, whilst she agreed to his good looks, Elissa wasn’t sure if the two were well matched at all. His views on women were refreshing, however, but that was that. There were no such thing as awkwardness or butterflies when it came to him. Fergus had told her about the feelings of romance and it never matched up with how she felt for Dairren. In fact, he sort of reminded her of her brother or Ser Roderick Gilmore.
Elissa was informed by one of the knights that her father and Rendon was in the Great Hall, so made her way there. She had to take the long way, however, in order to avoid her mother and her guests. There was no way she would be involved in anymore marriage talks. She had enough of that during their meals. The mere memory made her shudder as she pushed open the grand door. Standing by the huge, stone fireplace was her father and the Arl along with a man she hadn’t recognised. He was tall, dark and ruggedly handsome, the kind of guy that one of her handmaidens would blush about. Not Elissa, no, she had yet to find a person to feel things. People often stated their confusion with her interest anyway so it never mattered to her. As for Rendon, he reminded her of a rodent; long face, squinted eyes and a hooked nose. He wasn’t as handsome as the tales depicted him as, she realised. Rendon wore a dark tunic, as was the custom of his Arling and trousers just as due. He was also slender which suited his fighting style and he wore a smile that sent shivers down her spine. There was something about him that made her comfortable.
Then there was her father. Kind and humble, always up for a joke. Fergus took after their father in the handsomeness but had their mother’s dark locks. Elissa was a mixture of her parents, inherited her father’s eye shape and her mother’s soft jawline. Bryce was tall, not as tall as her brother, but taller than herself and his wife. His blonde hair was grey now and he hadn’t shaved in weeks. His beard was also grey. He wore his own tunic of gold and red as befitting of his status. Elissa, however, preferred his armour as it was of grey steal and matched the Cousland colour palette perfectly.
“Ah, pup!” Bryce announced once she pushed the door shut. It made a snapping noise which alerted the three men to her presence. Her father smiled as he took in the sight of her; she wasn’t one to parade in a dress. That was too simple, too boring. “I hadn’t seen you come in. You remember Arl Howe?” His friend bowed his head and Elissa made the polite courtesy like she was taught. Despite her tomboyish demeanour, some etiquettes had stuck inside of her brain and she automatically used them. This often amused her brother whenever she went from ladylike behaviour to a barbaric monster. “And this Duncan; he’s the Commander of the Grey Wardens in Ferelden. You have heard about them, haven’t you?”
“I hear they’re famed warriors who have Griffons as their noble steeds,” she smiled childishly, forgetting who she was and who she was talking to. Elissa revealed in the old stories or heroes as she wanted to be one herself. Saving villages and cities from evil, and having children to aspire to be like her. For now, she settled for her nephew’s idolisation of herself and Fergus. Oren liked hearing about heroes and wanted to become a man soon. He made his aunt chuckle who often promised to teach him survival and marital skills. His mother disapproved of this heavily.
“You’re somewhat correct,” Duncan gave her an easy smile. “Except for the fact that Griffons are long gone now. Extinct, in fact.” She felt a little saddened by the news but asked as to why he was here. Her father wanted to tell her off for her questioning but the commander took it in his stride. “Recruiting. Ser Gilmore has peaked my interest.” Elissa said that he would make a fine addition to their ranks.
“That he would,” Bryce agreed with a wry smile. Roderick was part of life at the castle, naturally, but he needed this opportunity to flourish.
“But, might I be so bold, Elissa here would be welcome into our ranks also. With her skills as a -“
“You’re suggesting I send my only daughter into battle? I could not risk that, What with Fergus going into war.” Elissa opened her mouth to protest but her father continued on, “even if you want this now, Pup, I cannot let you go. What would your mother do if she found out?” She would get used to it. “Even if she did, I’d regret it if you were harmed in any way. Just… just go and find Fergus will you?”
“Whatever for?”
“It is my fault,” Rendon spoke up seeming to be embarrassed. “I misjudged the weather and now my men are delayed. Your brother is to head the men going to the Wilds tonight, whilst your father and I shall join him after tomorrow.” She didn’t know what to think of that; this wasn’t like the aging Arl at all.
“It’s not as though we can predict the weather, Rendon, so stop being so hard on yourself.” Her father always saw the good in people and this just proved it. Even rodent’s like Howe was treated with such kindness. Over the years, Elissa always found something off putting about their old friend. Maybe it was just his age that freaked her out? That had to be it, especially with her not being married.
“I shall go and find my brother straight away,” she bowed her head and left the room. Elissa made a silent vow to seek out Duncan once her father was gone. He couldn’t stop her from speaking with the man, after all. As soon as she was outside, she spotted a familiar redhead waiting for her. “What do I owe the pleasure, Roderick?”
“Your mother told me I could find you here, my lady.” He bowed his head and Elissa wondered why he had to be so formal. The two of them practically grew up together. “It’s just that your hound is causing havoc in the kitchens again. Nan won’t rest until it’s taken care of.” She sighed before asking Ser Gilmore to lead the way. She doubted that Nan won’t do anything too harsh until they got there.
-HERO-
ELISSA MADE SURE THAT THEY AVOIDED HER MOTHER, who was blocking the way to the family sleeping quarters. She had to explain the avoidance to a confused Roderick, who didn’t know what was going on. Eleanor Cousland wanted her daughter to speak with Dairren in the hopes it would lead to marriage. Elissa was never keen on the idea and told her friend that.
“Can you not tell your mother?” He asked after she was done telling all. She pulled a face at such a question.
“You know my mother will not take no for an answer.” She felt like a prisoner in her own home, until she found a perfect match. There were once a rumour about herself and Ser Gilmore being involved. But that was laughed off a while ago. No one knew what dissolved the rumour but it was no more. Elissa and Roderick found the whole affair an embarrassment.
“She will come around one day,” he told her, giving her a small smile. She didn’t believe that but she nodded in response. They continued down the corridors, pausing when guards and knights bowed their respect. Elissa felt awkward but smiled politely in response, trying to ignore her uneasiness. Was it bad that she felt bad and worried for that day? It was as if she expected something to happen. What would happen? That was a question she couldn’t answer honestly.
“Will got two stop standing around and do something?” Even outside on the other side of a closed door, Nan’s voice boomed making the two look at one another. The governess turned cook had a temper when provoked and nobody could calm her down. Perhaps it was time to teach her hound some manners? Elissa was the one to lead the way inside due to the fact it was her Mabari to have caused this ruckus. Nan was standing near the larder, glaring at two Elven servants who looked terrified.
“Calm down, good woman, we have come to tame the beast,” Gilmore slowly made his approach, failing to hide his fear. Nan turned her glare onto them, especially Elissa. No amount of status would make this old woman act scared.
“You,” she gestured to the young lady. “It’s your bloody hound that has us in this mess in the first place!” Elissa opened her mouth to respond but it was apparent that the cook wasn’t finished. “I could have gone to a fancy kitchen in Orlais but I chose here. Just… just be rid of that hound so we can continue making supper.”
“R… right away,” Elissa stuttered before following the knight to the door leading to the larder. After nodding one another, they both entered the storage room to see a large dog in the middle of the room. As soon as he saw his mistress, he bolted over to her, tongue lolling out, panting away as his tail wagged knocking over a bowl of salt. Elissa knelt down before him and proceeded to scratch behind his ears, hoping he would calm from the fuss. He barked once again, a slight growl underlying his tone.
“My lady, I think Grey is trying to tell us something.” She had to agree with her friend as she straightened herself up and withdrew her blade. From all around them were noises of scraping and squeaks, before something large caught their gaze; rats the same size of newborns leapt into view. Elissa, Roderick and Grey all sprang into action to rid the larder of the vermin.
-HERO-
"BY THE MAKER!" Ser Gilmore exclaimed once they had taken care of the pests. The floors, walls and the three standing in the room were painted with crimson splatters. Dead rats pooled the floor before them. “It had to be giant rats! My father always told me that an adventure can only start with giant rats.”
“That might be so, but Nan isn’t going to like her larder being covered with those things.” Elissa wasn’t sure how she felt about it herself. It wasn’t as if she felt bad or anything, it was just that she disliked the mere idea.
“You’re absolutely right. I need to go back to my duties, though.” He gazed at her apologetically. “I’m sure you have to deliver a message to your brother,” with that said, he left her standing there. She looked down at her dog and shook her head. The two then left the larder to face Nan who still didn’t look happy.
“There is the beast now,” she stared down at the latter who hid his snot behind his paws. Elissa mentioned the rats and the servants whimpered in response. Nan shook her head, “look what you’ve done now. What if he led those rats in there, in the first place?” It was Grey’s turn to whimper and he moved to hide behind his mistress's legs. That made the cook sigh and change her demeanour. “Don’t give me that look, you know how I feel about that look. Fine then, come and have some scraps of meat. Let it be known that Nan doesn’t let others go without.”
Elissa smiled softly and allowed her hound to get something to eat. She then said her goodbyes to her old nanny and the servants before leaving the kitchen. Fergus was probably saying his goodbyes to his wife and child, so that was where she headed next.
-HERO-
"AH, I SEE YOU HANDLED THE SITUATION IN THE KITCHEN." Eleanor stared down at the dog that remained close to her daughter’s heel. Her greying hair was swept up into a bun and her dress was a dark brown. Despite her simple style, the Teyrna still appeared to be elegant and now that her daughter stood before her, her elegance shone even more. Elissa Cousland was a more of a man than a girl. If it weren’t for her hair or breasts, she could have easily passed for a man.
“The situation is under control,” she replied, her light orbs dancing over to their guests. She remembered her mother’s friend Landra, the wife of Bann Loren, and a woman who couldn’t hold back her drink. Next to her, stood her son who could be seen as handsome in his own rights. The fact that his mother had drunkenly stated this fact was somewhat mortifying. She had even mentioned something about marriage and Elissa often switched off at such talk. “Of course I remember Lady Landra,” she curtsied when her mother spoke up, to introduce her guests.
“This is my handmaiden Iona,” Landra gestured over to the female elf who stood behind Dairren. In comparison to the other women, Iona was beautiful. Even Elissa, who never paused for such things, nearly choked on the air. “Come on, dear, don’t be shy; none of us will bite your head off.”
“It is good to meet you, my lady.” Iona curtsied politely, her voice was low and soft. Elissa smiled in her direction, causing the elf to turn away, a faint pink covering her cheeks. She was glad that nobody picked up on this as Dairren cleared his throat.
“Lady Elissa, you are looking as beautiful as ever.” The latter just stared at him, trying to pick away at his words. They just sounded off and shouldn’t have come out of his mouth. Instead, she smiled and said that it was good to see him too. Landra yawned and mentioned about retiring to her bedchambers. Dairren nodded in response, “Iona and I shall be in the library if we are needed.” With that said, the three of them went their separate ways leaving mother and daughter alone in the corridor.
“Don’t you think Dairren is handsome, my sweet girl?” Elissa knelt down to fuss over her dog, trying to ignore the subject. “Elissa, listen to me, you cannot avoid the subject of marriage.” Standing up, she allowed a soft sigh to leave her lips.
“And I said that I was not ready, mother.” Eleanor asked when she would be ready and her daughter shrugged her shoulders in response. “I don’t think I will ever be ready. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to speak with Fergus before he leaves.” Elissa brushed passed her mother and continued upstairs towards the bedrooms, ignoring the glare upon her back.
-HERO-
ELISSA FOUND HER BROTHER IN HIS ROOM, packing away his gear for the march. Next to him, his wife was passing him his things and airing her worries. Oriana was a woman from Antiva who was considered beautiful and all of the knights often gazed after her. She was dark due to her years in her home city and was slender. Her dark hair reached to her shoulders which was always worn down. On the floor, sat Oren who bore the Cousland pedigree perfectly. He had dark eyes, pale skin and dark hair just like his father. True, there was a slight scandal when the two first got married but that soon dissolved when Oriana proved herself as a remarkable lady.
“Don’t worry, my love, the king believes that the battle should be over within the fortnight.” Elissa lingered in the doorway, smiling at the small family unit. It wasn’t until Grey scampered over to Oren that her presence was known to the others. “And here’s my baby sister to show me off!” Scrunching her nose at the mention of baby sister, she slowly made her way into the room.
“Perhaps I ought to wait until you three have said goodbye properly?”
“Nonsense!” Fergus flashed her a toothy grin. He moved across and pulled her into a bone crushing hug, which Elissa matched just as easily. “I’ve always got time for you, Elissa.” The Cousland siblings were both competitive and affectionate towards one another. People never knew what to make of their bond as only the siblings knew it better than anybody.
“How I wish I was going with you,” she smiled softly as soon as they pulled away. Fergus squeezed her shoulder and agreed, saying that they would be a force to be reckoned with. “You will be missed, brother.” Elissa smiled over to her nephew who was now playing with Grey. It was rather sweet. “Did you know that there’s a Grey Warden visiting us?” Oren paused his play and looked over the adults.
“Really?” His eyes widened in excitement, “Did he arrive riding a Griffin?” All of the adults chuckled at his innocent words.
“Griffins exist only in stories now,” his mother told him gently, running a soft hand through his dark locks. The boy didn’t seem to be convinced by that and Elissa honestly didn’t either. Fergus smirked over to his sister, wondering why a Grey Warden would come to Highever.
“Recruiting, apparently Roderick is a candidate.”
“Is that so? If I were that Warden, I’d have my eye on you little sister.” Elissa made no attempt to reply, only making an effort to snort. That spoke volumes to her brother who knew that there had been a mention of it. He had no doubts that their parents would forbid it, as it was better to have one child survive if the other didn’t. Fergus, being the eldest, was to be the sacrificial lamb as always. He didn’t seem to mind that.
“By the way, Father tells me he can not join you on the road tonight. It has something to do with a judgement of error on the Arl’s part.” Fergus frowned at that, as he knew all too well that Arl didn’t make errors. This was unheard of.
“I’m afraid it is true, my boy.” Bryce and Eleanor entered the room, appearing to be conflicted by the news. It was the truth, Elissa had thought bitterly, Arl Howe had pretty much admitted that himself. Despite her father’s apparent faith in the man, she had her own doubts. What would happen when her brother left for the battlefield that night? Regardless, the Cousland tried to make the rest of their hours together a good few hours. After Oren departed for bed, Elissa announced her own retirement and her dog followed her towards her own bedchambers.
-HERO-
IT WAS ONLY A FEW HOURS LATER THAT ELISSA WAS WOKEN UP BY A LOT OF NOISE. The first sound came next to her bed, growling and scratching. She mumbled in her sleep and turned onto her side, ignoring her dog’s stupidity. It was a while after that a second noise properly awoke her. This time it hadn’t been Grey who alerted her to trouble; it was a child’s scream. She was almost in her armour when her door slammed open. It was one of her stewards, who appeared to be in shock and blood was painted over his torso.
“They’re taking over the castle!” He managed before an arrow went into his leg, causing him to collapse onto the floor. Elissa barked an order to her Mabari and ducked down to grab her sword. She had no time for her shield, however, when an assailant charged at her. Remembering her training, she moved to the left and spun around, bringing her weapon into the side of her attacker. After the man fell to the ground in a grunt of pain, she grabbed her shield and ran outside. Her animal was already on top of one of them, tearing out their throat amongst blood curdling screams. Elissa was quick to aid to her hound from an oncoming soldier. She knocked the man off his feet by bashing him with her shield. As soon as he was on the ground, she plunged her sword into his exposed neck. Blood spurted onto her clothes and face. She was ripping her sword away when a voice echoed the chaos.
“Their shields,” her mother cried, “but… but it’s impossible.” That was when Elissa was made aware of something she didn’t want to be true. She kicked at a shield on the floor and instantly spotted the sigil painted onto it. “These are Howe’s men,” Eleanor confirmed, stopping at her daughter’s side. The Teyrna was already in her armour with a bow in her hands. It seemed that the youngest lady wasn’t the only to be awoken by the noise.
“Oren,” Elissa whispered suddenly, moving towards her brother’s room. After kicking open the door, she made an attempt to prevent her mother looking at the horrible scene. Oren was on the bed, covered in blood and Oriana was on the floor near the door; she had obviously tried to protect the boy. “This isn’t right,” she sobbed at the sight.
“My little boy,” Eleanor had collapsed to her knees, shivering back her tears. “We need to find your father, he never came up to bed!” Elissa knew that he was probably with Howe and they needed to get there quickly. It was as they were passing the treasury that her mother hesitated, “The family sword, we mustn’t let Howe’s men take it!” She nodded and the two of them, plus Grey and a steward, went to get that sword.
-HERO-
AFTER THEY GOT THE FAMILY SWORD, shield and a better set of armour for Elissa, they entered the Great Hall. It was chaos in there with Ser Gilmore heading up the defence. Elissa charged in and decapitated a mage and slicing into a Howe knight’s rib cage. Once the hall was littered with men, Cousland and Howe alike, the women turned to address Ser Gilmore, who had honestly seen better days.
“They attacked us out of nowhere,” he explained after an awkward greeting. Elissa has never seen her friend so out of his depth; he was usually calm and collected when it came to combat. This was the real thing, she reminded herself ignoring the wave of bitterness that came with it. Her mother, bless her, asked where her husband was. Roderick shrugged, looking honestly helpless, “the last time I saw him, he mentioned the larder and went along there. I recall there being a secret passage through there.”
“Thank you, Ser Gilmore.” The knight nodded and said he would continue to barricade the hall from another attack. Elissa protested at this and the man pressed his lips against her cheek, in a brotherly gesture.
“Just tell Fergus… tell your brother I’m sorry for yesterday, okay? He will know what I mean.” Without an explanation, Gilmore went to hold the door with the remaining Cousland knights. Her mother pulled her towards the corridors leading to the kitchens. They had no time for any kind of talk now, it was too late for it after all.
-HERO-
TEYRN BRYCE COUSLAND WAS ON THE FLOOR OF THE LARDER, awaiting for Duncan to come back. He could hear shouts from outside of the small storage room, wondering if his family was doing okay. After seeing his cook and the rest of the staff dead in the kitchen, his hope had shattered. He wanted more than anything to see his girls once again, before death came to collect him. That could be the least of his worries as he ran a hand over the dark puddle surrounding him. His other hand was clutching the wound he earned from his own friend.
“Damn him,” he grunted trying to focus on the door. He just needed a little more hope, glad that his eldest child was nowhere near the castle. Fergus wouldn’t have stopped until Howe was dead along with everyone else in this castle. The door swung open and a weak smile wove onto his lips when he saw them.
“Bryce,” his wife whimpered as she fell to her knees, at his side. His daughter came in front of him whilst her dog tried lick away at his wounds. The mood was bleak, despite their silence. “Who… who did this…” Eleanor trembled, unable to hide her grief.
“Howe,” he looked up at his daughter who looked sick. She had fought her way through the attack, he had observed and managed to live. Elissa had some injuries but none that seemed to be life threatening. She was a Cousland through and through. When she made an attempt to help him up, he held up a hand. “I won’t survive the standing, I’m afraid.” Bryce winced once more and his wife gasped.
“Bryce -“
“I’m afraid he’s right, Teyrna.” It was Duncan, who had entered the room. His expression was grim and it seemed he had just been in his own battles. Eleanor went to accuse him of not being much help. “I did what I could, for your husband and home. Their attack caught us all by surprise.”
“Please, Duncan, take my wife and daughter to safety.” Bryce was now having a bad time speaking and the Grey Warden gave him a strained look. He explained there would be a price for such help, his eyes finding Elissa’s making his point clear. “I… I understand… just, please… get them out of here.” Bryce began to cough up blood and his wife placed a hand onto his shoulder.
“I’m going to stay,” she began and Elissa aired her disagreement. The older woman shook her head, instantly stopping her daughter. “You need more time to get out of here and I would rather die by your father’s side.” Tears found their way into the young lady’s eyes.
“Mother Father,” she managed, coughing into her hand. This couldn’t be happening but the looks her parents gave her, told her everything she needed to know. Elissa should be protesting for their lives but she knew it would be too late, there was nothing anyone could do. “I… I’m so sorry…”
“Just find Fergus… your brother will help you in revenge,” her father croaked out and she slowly nodded, raising to her feet. Her gaze was now on the Warden who was standing by the door.
“I shall… avenge our house,” she vowed through her tears and made her way to the secret passage. “By becoming one of the finest Wardens this generation has seen.” After saying their goodbyes, and coaxing Grey into the tunnel, Elissa and Duncan made their escapes. This was the last time she ever saw her parents and their home. She reasoned that this was the beginning of an adventure, no matter how heart wrenching it had been.

Esmee Amarathine was born in the 1920s and raised for the first few years of her life by her father Eme and her mother (tbd). Eme never had any interest in family besides one night stands that never lasted until the next morning. One day, however, he had an idea. If he were to have kids, it was possible that they could inherit his immortality. He would have an impressionable child to train that would obey his every command. He could create an army.
So he found a suitable partner and Esmee was born. She was thrown into studies and training as soon as she could walk and talk. It was inevitable when Esmee had her first fall and injured herself. It was a small cut but it’s significance was great. Her mother noticed and when it didn’t heal rapidly, she knew Esmee’s fate. Fearing for her life, she took steps to protect her from future injuries and to hide existing ones.
Of course, that would never last forever. At age 8, while sparring with her father, Eme went a little too far as he was fooled that she could heal. Her arm broke which was not something her mother could easily hide. Esmee was told to run as her mother faced the wrath of Eme and was killed. Esmee managed to get away and others helped her hide from him.
When she reached adulthood she joined the French Ministry of Magic as an Auror. Her life goal was to track her father down and force him to face justice for not only her mothers death but for all the events in history he was responsible for. During her research into history and her father, she discovered the existence of another immortal, her own aunt named Eleanor.
Esmee would eventually seek Eleanor out and team up with her. Together, they managed to capture Eme and send him to Azkaban. However, Esmee had a hatred for immortals and knew they were dangerous no matter their morals. She betrayed her aunt and imprisoned her within Azkaban too.
The rest of her life was spent guarding them and their secrets, even recruiting her own children and grandchildren to the cause. She would never let them escape, although she knew deep down that it was only a matter of time. They had forever to wait for their chance at freedom.

I've been thinking about Anneliese and Anora. Because I feel like, despite everything that happened, Anneliese still has some respect for Anora and would try to build some bridges with her.
I can't really tell how Anora would feel because of, wel...everything (I mean, Anneliese lied to her, Alistair killed her father, they took her throne and then Gwaren)
But Anneliese wouldn't want Anora to like *actually* loose everything. She would check on her, make sure she was doing well, and honestly, at some point, she would probably just give Gwaren to Anora if she wished for it (especially in the whole warden commander bussiness, Anneliese would definetly ask Anora to manage Gwaren while she's in Amaranthine, kinda of the Eamona and Teagen with redcliff thing)
And like Anora said she was close to Eleanor, so that's another big reason why
#i will say i don't understand anora's character enough to say how forgiving she can be#and i wouldn't put it past her to be like don't talk to me#but i would like for them to reach some common ground

Ramsay Cousland
Even though Fergus was their elder brother, most of Highever knew that Ramsay was in line to become the next Teyrn. Their father's favourite, they were known to fulfill all their responsibilities. Ramsay had charmed every guest of their parents and those nobles they visited. The common folk of Highever knew them as someone who partied hard, started tavern brawls, and kissed barmaids. Becoming a Grey Warden completely changed their trajectory. Now as the Queen of Ferelden, she cares for the people of Ferelden and guides Alistair in dealing with their people. They still take the time to mingle with commoners, start tavern brawls, and kiss barmaids -- even a Queen should enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Why Rendon Howe is evil
This is a little theory thats been going around in my head for several days.
Rendon Howe. Evil personified. Probably one of the most despicable and hated characters in the Dragon Age series. One of the characters thats most easily defined as being just plain bad and evil, with good reason. Even in the game itself no one likes him (with 1 exception that I'll mention later in this post)
In the game, we really aren't given many reasons as to why he is the way he is and why he does the thing he does beyond saying he's evil, power hungry, and like he himself says as he dies, "I deserved more!" But recently I started to become curious about him to try to find out what had made him become like this, cause I prefer villains to have some complexity that goes beyond just "He's evil just because".
Rest of the analysis under the cut.
.
My main theory of why I think Rendon became "evil" is cause he may have suffered brain damage due to his injuries while fighting against Orlais with Maric and his rebels. My first thought for this came cause historically, Henry the 8th of England suffered several brain injuries during sporting events, and its believed that his injuries led to him having a severe personality change, which led to him become more radical, tyrannical and murderous.
After the death of his father and the Howe family joining the rebellion, Rendon joined Maric's forces and became close friends with Bryce Cousland, future Teyrn of Highever, and Leonas Bryland, future Arl of South Reach. The 3 of them fought together in the Battle of White River, which was the worse defeat the rebels suffered in the war against Orlais, and only 50 of the initial thousand soldier strong fereldan army survived.
Rendon was very badly injured during the battle, and Bryce and Leonas had to dragged him away to safety as the rebel army was crushed by the orlesians. Bryce was injured in the arm while trying to save Rendon from a chevalier. They got Rendon to Redcliffe and stayed with him for a month while he recovered before leaving to rejoin Maric and the rest of the rebel forces. While Rendon recovered in Redcliffe, he was tended to by Leonas's sister, Eliane, until he eventually recovered months later. He eventually proposed to her and they got married.
And here is the first bit of evidence we get of Rendon's attitude and behaviour completely changing after that battle and his wounds. From the wiki: "Leonas had become concerned by the changes in his friend's behavior since the battle and attempted to prevent the marriage." And some other quotes from Leonas that we get to her in dao: "Rendon Howe was no friend of mine. The boy I knew... died at the Battle of White River" and "That he didn't die years ago is the only thing worth mourning here." Leonas cut all contact with Rendon after he told him that he was only marrying his sister for her dowry and connections.
This goes back to what I mentioned earlier about the one person that seemed to care for Rendon. That person is Bryce Cousland.
Bryce and Eleanor were the only people that attended Rendon and Eliane's wedding, and even though Rendon was treated as a pariah by almost everyone in fereldan nobility, Bryce still maintained a friendly relation with Rendon, and seemed to have an almost protective attitude towards him, which contrasts greatly with how Leonas feels about Rendon. And this is where I came up with another theory about why this is. I believe that Bryce feels personally responsible for the injuries and near death that Rendon suffered during the Battle of White River and feels that he is somehow obligated to look after him. I can only hc why these could be, but maybe Rendon got injured while protecting Bryce, or maybe Bryce's actions during the battle led to Rendon's injuries. Maybe that's why Bryce seems to have keep pushing for the friendship that he once had with him, even though he clearly no longer was the same person. Cause Bryce felt responsible for the way Rendon had turned out.
Its possible that Rendon was just always like this, and those months he spent recovering just made him become super resentful against everything and everyone, but I do believe that the near death injuries he suffered during that battle, including possible head injuries and brain trauma, led to his personality changing and to him becoming the sheer villain we see ingame.
And to finish, a bit of background as to why Rendon would have hated Bryce even despite of this, here's a bit of info about them and about the relation between Highever and Amaranthine.
Rendon's father, Tarleton, supported Orlais during their occupation of Ferelden, and was eventually hanged by the Couslands before the Howes officially joined the rebellion. Adding the fact that Highever was once part of Amaranthine before they rebelled to gain their independence and annexed a good part of southern Amaranthine after winning their independence war, it adds some context to how Rendon could have seen this part of his greater vengeance against the Couslands and Highever for killing his father and taking away land from Amaranthine.
TL,DR: Rendon Howe suffered grieveous injuries during the war against Orlais, including possible brain injuries which may have led to a complete personality shift and to him becoming the person that we see him being in the game.

I have too many for these to be in the tags so... (Please bear in mind that all of my OCs exist in one giant messy worldstate so)
Overall - most of them have had some good years but none of them are having a very good time right now.
Wardens
Varta Aeducan: After the events of Origins she returned to Orzammar where her status was officially restored, but was not named a Paragon. She worked with the then Warden-Commander Mahariel to rotate Grey Wardens in and out of Orzammar, giving them valuable experience fighting darkspawn and providing support to both Orzammar and the Legion of the Dead. In a weird twist of fate, she ended up with Rica Brosca, raising her nephew Endrin II. Together they have another son, Dailan, and three daughters, Rishan, Kalatha, and Jacha. Young Endrin is already a favorite to succeed Lord Harrowmont. For the most part things were relatively quiet and stable in her life until the events of Veilguard begin.
Ellendre Amell: Ellendre followed Mahariel to Amaranthine after Origins, where she met Mhairi (who doesn't die because fuck you, bioware, I loved her). While Mahariel dealt with the events of Awakening, Ellendre and Mhairi traveled Ferelden and into Orlais recruiting Warden hopefuls. When Mahariel chose leave with Velanna to search for the Architect and Seranni, Ellendre Amell became the new Warden-Commander of Ferelden. She has remained as Warden-Commander of Ferelden ever since. As they are both Wardens, she and Mhairi have no children. While Ellendre felt the false Calling during the Inquisition, she and Mhairi refused to abandon Ferelden even as many of their Wardens fled to Clarel in Orlais. As of the start of Veilguard, she is still Warden-Commander of Ferelden.
Herra Brosca: Herra became Teryna of Gwaren after the Fifth Blight. She and Leliana were happy in Gwaren for a while, before Leliana was called to serve Divine Justinia. For several years their lives drifted between Val Royeaux and Gwaren. When the Mage Rebellion broke out, Herra left Gwaren in the hands of a steward and went in search of a cure for the Calling. When she heard news of the Inquisition, and the death of the Divine, she did make her way to Skyhold. And while she never found a cure for the Calling, she was nonetheless cured of the Blight in 9:41. Leliana ascended to the position of Divine in 9:42 and Herra remained at her side. Their daughter, Cecilie, was born in 9:46. With the events of Veilguard, however, obviously all of that is in danger. The Divine no longer commands an army of Templars, and being forced to abandon Val Royeaux has taken a harsh toll on both of them. Gwaren was also lost to the combined efforts of the Blight and the Antaam.
Jaine Cousland: Jaine married Queen Anora mac Tir in 9:31 Dragon, becoming Princess of Ferelden. With the survival of Fergus, she was able to devote her time to helping Ferelden rebuild. She and Anora have three children - Duncan (9:33), Celia (9:34), and Eleanor (9:43). Jaine resumed her role as a military leader during the Inquisition. In 9:41 Jaine was cured of the Blight after hearing the False Calling.
Serona Mahariel: Serona became Warden-Commander of Ferelden after the Fifth Blight, and saw Ferelden through the events of Awakening. It was here that she was reconnected with her childhood crush, Velanna. After letting the Architect live in the hopes that it would make it possible to save Seranni, Mahariel and Velanna left into the Deep Roads to hunt him down. I haven't decided what all happens to them during that time, but they resurface in Isseya's camp of Wardens during Veilguard (no, they don't die. Maybe. We'll see.)
Isene Tabris: Isene Tabris became Bann of the Alienage after the Fifth Blight, a role in which she lingered in for only a few short years. She ultimately abandoned the position, turning it over to her cousin, Shianni, to pursue Morrigan into the Dragonbone Wastes. Isene went through the mirror with Morrigan, where she helped Morrigan raise their son, Kieran. Isene also resurfaced in Inquisition, but did not reveal who she was. She masqueraded as a servant in Orlais (which she hated doing) and slummed around Skyhold pretending to be a random soldier. Until Herra recognized her. Like Brosca and Cousland, she was cured of the Blight in 9:41 Dragon, and disappeared back into wherever with Morrigan after the defeat of Corypheus. She is not at all participating in the events of Veilguard, by choice, and is spending her time with Kieran.
I only have the one Hawke thankfully lol
Agnella Hawke: Agnella and Merrill have remained in and around Kirkwall over the years. Merrill wanted to help the elves there, and Bethany wanted to help the Circle mages, so even though Agnella wanted very much to leave, she stayed. After Inquisition she never reported to Weisshaupt, despite saying she would do so. Instead she disappeared, resurfacing in Kirkwall again a few years later. In actuality, she was just hanging out an estate outside Kirkwall trying to get some damn peace (yes, Merrill and the others knew where she was and visited regularly). She and Merrill did not have children of their own, but they have taken in several orphaned children and are raising them. With the escape of the elven gods, Hawke is back to just trying to keep her family together as best she can. Bethany was in Rivain visiting Isabela when Kirkwall fell, and Hawke insisted she stay there. She and Merrill have evacuated Kirkwall with Aveline and the rest of the refugees. Hawke's very bad no good life continues.
My Inquisitors (Only Lavellan is actually Inquisitor in this)
Imekari Adaar: Imekari and Sera have spent the last 10 years bouncing around Thedas as Red Jennies, righting wrongs, causing mayhem, and gathering information on Solas and his operatives as best they can. They have no children and have no plans to have children. With the events of Veilguard, they are just doing what they can to survive and help others, operating mostly in Rivain and what's left of the Free Marches. She joins in the final battle against Ghilan'nain and Elgarn'nan.
Jesi Cadash: Jesi and Dagna have stayed connected with what remains of the disbanded Inquisition over the years. Dagna's insight on magic was helpful as new magic continued emerging around Thedas. Most of the last 10 years they spent in Nevarra, where Dagna studied the different magics there using connections Cassandra Pentaghast helped her to make (with some complaint). They have children, but I haven't decided how many or how old. Their family was one of the first to relocate back to Skyhold following the events of Veilguard, as Dagna was able to immediately make use of its forge to help the resistance.
Lindiranae Lavellan: After disbanding the Inquisition, LIndiranae and Josephine went to Antiva and stayed with her family for some time. They spent the next several years gathering information on Solas, and traveling between Wycome - where Lavellan's clan now had a permanent home - and Antiva City. They married in 9:46, in two separate ceremonies - one Andrastian, and one Dalish. They do not have children yet, but have discussed children several times. It has been a source of tension that Lindiranae would prefer to have either elven or human children, but not half-elven children. Lindiranae was drawn back to Orlais and Ferelden with the events of Veilguard, while Josephine remained in the comparatively somewhat safer Antiva City. Lindiranae is the one who appears to Rook and the Veilguard.
Sabine Trevelyan: After the Inquisition, Sabine chose to remain in Orlais to assist Cassandra in rebuilding the Seekers. They married in 9:43 and have one child. It has been a political tense, but mostly quiet ten years for them. At times they have come under fire as staunch allies of Divine Victoria (even if they at times do not agree with her reforms). There have been frequent trips to Ostwick to visit Sabine's family, as well as Nevarra to visit her sister and some limited members of Cassandra's own family. With the events of Veilguard they have both been pulled back into the chaos. Cassandra has done her best to lead the Seekers against the invading forces of Venatori and Blight against Orlais, and Sabine has served and fought at her side.
Tell me about your Dragon Age OC babies. Like does ur Warden/Hawke/Quizzy have kids with their partner? I need to know!!!

alpha: Hero of Ferelden
“Look, I’m not asking for a lot here. Just do what I say for ten minutes and we’ll be golden.”
Caje Cousland Lord Cousland. Hero of Ferelden. Warden-Commander. Arl of Amaranthine. King-Consort of Ferelden. Human noble.
Male. He/Him/His. Pansexual, demiromantic. 22 Wintermarch, 9:08 Dragon. Highever, Ferelden. Warrior; sword and shield. Templar. Champion. Guardian.
Eyes: Dark gray-blue, a bit narrow. Get brighter blue the longer he’s a Templar. Hair: Dishwater blond, verging on brown. Just past his ears, usually swept back out of his face, though refuses to cooperate frequently. Smooth, frequently fussed over. Skin: Tan, golden undertones. Few freckles. Calloused hands. Height: 6'0". Build: Tall and broad. Broad shoulders, large arms, looks like he can walk through a stone wall. Notable Details: Gradually increasing amount of scars. Scar near his left temple, usually hidden by his hair. Voice: Bradley James
Positive Traits: Diplomatic; he’s good at figuring out what someone wants to hear and the quickest way to deescalate a situation. Calm and patient; his temper is usually at an even keel and it takes a while before he’s ready to pop, and even when he is it’s not going to be a particularly explosive ordeal. Good with words, and good at figuring out the best words to use for the situation; while he doesn’t always seem articulate when he’s not bothering, he can turn it on and off like a switch. Observant; he’s going to cotton on to the small details pretty quickly, and he’s typically pretty good at reading the room. Personable and outwardly friendly; even if he doesn’t particularly like someone, they most likely aren’t going to be able to tell that at a glance. Negative Traits: Self-absorbed and arrogant; he’s very full of himself, generally figures he knows best and that he should be in charge, and if he’s not involved in a situation then clearly it can’t be all that important or urgent. Know-it-all. Bossy, to the extreme; he’ll mask it with politeness, but he’s going to get increasingly pointed if he wants someone to do something and they aren’t cooperating with him. Manipulative, even to friends; everyone can be a pawn in the right situation, so he’s not going to see anything wrong with maneuvering them as he sees fit or with guilting a friend into conceding he’s right. Two-faced, albeit pleasantly so; while he’s outwardly friendly to most people, he’s not going to see anything wrong with throwing someone to the wolves with a smile on his face. Neutral Traits: Ambivert. Not particularly sentimental. Laid-back. Optimist vs. Pessimist: Optimistic, but pushy about getting the right outcome. Quirks: Tends to butt into conversations uninvited. Typically overdressed for the occasion whilst living on the road; hates feeling like he’s not put together. Avoids children as much as possible; Oren was the exception. Tends to move very deliberately and purposefully.
Religion: Atheist. Likes: Fighting, serious or for play. Dogs, horses, animals in general. Art. Music. Learning and perfecting a skill. Theater. That ‘I just won an argument’ feeling. Most wine. More keen on savory foods. Dislikes: Most children. Rodents. Worms. Mess and clutter. People arguing with him. Not getting his way. Being bossed around or told what to do. Not a big fan of sweets. Favorite Colors: Royal blue. Vegas gold. Silver. Indigo. Hobbies: Reading. Drawing, especially plants and animals. Hunting. Combat, sparring. Wrestling.
Family: Bryce Cousland (father, deceased). Eleanor Cousland (mother, deceased). Fergus Cousland (brother). Oriana Cousland (sister-in-law, deceased). Oren Cousland (nephew, deceased). Dog: Squirrel. Other Critters: Valerian, stallion, post-Awakening. Romance: Leliana initially; marries Anora. Friends: Morrigan. Zevran. Alistair. Anders. Nathaniel. Note: Didn’t particularly like all of his companions, but was very good at seeming as if he did. Marriage with Anora was less than smooth, and friendships started deteriorating fairly quickly once he was no longer in daily contact with them. *everything in this section can of course be tweaked or disregarded entirely for specific threads, if you’d rather.
