Question, since my knowledge is a bit more shaky in this area:
Would the emergence of 'capitalism' be more of a French Revolution thing (with the transition from a feudalistic to capitalist society), or would it come a bit later with Marx's and Engels popularization of the revolutionary stages of history? Or is it a bit of both/neither?
I’m gonna be honest, my expertise is the Pueblo II-IV periods in 900–1450 CE US Southwest, with some experience in 1800s New England and the Bronze Age Aegean. The emergence of capitalism is not my forte; I was counting the beginning of capitalism from the Industrial Revolution in the late 1700s. I now recognize that that’s a much more complicated question than I gave it credit for!
#asks#eldritchneuro#No shade and there are definitely good cases people are making for different turning points#My understanding had always been ‘the Industrial Revolution made us a Capitalist Society’#When dispersed farming; guilds; and home craft production gave way to factories and industrialized production#But people have been making a lot of other points as well which fair’s fair!

When is round 2 of the book club being planned for?
So the original plan was to wait until Overhaul 2.0 started releasing and then we would follow along with that, however! I've had a lot of people say that they were sad that they missed the first bookclub, and with how long Overhaul 2.0 will be (one chapter a week), I think doing an earlier one with the one volume a week format might be best.
I'm thinking two options: 1. We start late May to build up to the Dark Horse deluxe omnibuses hopefully starting to release in September. 2. We start in September to, y'know, start reading along with the omnibus releases (though we'll obviously be reading faster than that--tbh, I could theoretically run a round three leading up to the final volume coming out).
Shit kinda hit the fan in my life over the past few days (so much health garbage, house hunting is hell on planet earth, and my mom's cancer markers just shot back up after a couple years of remission), so I'm leaning toward starting in September. But if anyone else has any thoughts, definitely let me know! I fucking adore Trimax and legitimately would start bookclub the second tomorrow if I thought it was possible or a good idea

#I'm gonna say it: #I think we need more of the 'repairing/tending to disability aids' as eroticism
I've been meaning to reply to these tags on @eldritchneuro 's reblog, because let me tell you, I've seen that kind of thing in fandom before and it's THE BEST SHIT.
When I was into Overwatch I was big into the Genji/Cassidy(then McCree) ship. Since Genji is a cyborg, and Cassidy later gets a prosthetic arm, there was a bunch of erotic repairing mechanical body parts stuff that popped up in fic. It sounds weird typing it out like that out of context, but it's part of what made that ship so compelling for me.
In one fic I read, for example, Genji couldn't feel much through his artificial skin, but during a hasty battlefield repair Cassidy accidentally finds some artificial nerves and finds he can give his touch starved buddy some relief by fiddling with some wires. It's a way for Genji to find pleasure and comfort in his new body and for the two to grow closer. (I don't remember what that fic was called I need to look it up later) The disabled body becomes not a source of pain but of joy once explored as its own unique thing.
To summarize: yes this is the good shit we need more of it please more romanticizing/eroticizing disability aids in this way Trigun would be great for that gimmie
#trigun#overwatch#this is a bit of a tangent but i wanted to include this all to advocate for this point#i miss that kind of stuff#i don't see it much after i left the overwatch fandom#it seems like a rich well to draw from#for exploring thematic elements and character moments that often go unexplored#and it makes my dick hard#it's possible to be more than one thing at a time!

I was 15 when the Trigun '98 English dub aired on Cartoon Network in the USA, and at the time, I couldn't be less interested. Anime for me at the that age was to fulfill my little monster/transformation-loving heart - I didn't watch for plots and themes, but characters wallowing in self-loathing and identity crises.
Last year, I was intrigued by Trigun Stampede's CGI animation and ended up rewatching the series four times because I so loved the way the story unfolded and the exploration of pacifism as an extreme stance. (And Vash and Knives as Plants tickled my monster-lover funny bone.) Stampede, to now mid-30 me, felt like a tragically hopefully stand against what often feels like a brutally unforgiving world.
So, I went back and finally watched '98 to compare and contrast, and found the exact same theme(s) presented just as @eldritchneuro said: unassuming, silly show actually has really interesting and compelling things to say. Stampede just had to do it with fewer episodes.
And Studio Orange did it through Roberto and I absolutely adore his character for it! He works so well as the viewer's guide to No Man's Land and how it's culture works, almost entirely through cinematic language where the viewer has to watch and listen and pay attention. Through hums, or suspicious looks, or by just being an older, wary No Man's Land everyman, Roberto worked as an excellent introduction to Trigun for me.
Yes, Roberto has his Mr. Exposition moments, like info-dumping E.G. the Mine, but the character did his job for the story and it's world and when he did everything Orange needed him to do, he was given not only an emotionally impactful end, but one that evolves and solidifies Meryl's character in anticipation for the story's next installment.
(I'd also like to argue Roberto also had his own character growth by softening to Vash's philosophy, but I'm pretty sure I'm projecting and Stampede didn't actually present that (you'd think I'd remember after bragging about four viewings - but then again, Roberto DID end up staying to help on the sandsteamer, so....). That aside, it's still poetic and beautiful storytelling that the character who cautioned Vash wasn't "long for this world" ends up dead by the series' end (and possibly foreshadowing Wolfwood's fate? Or Livio's battle against Elendira, since he was impaled by one of her nails? Or Orange was just wrapping his character now that the story was underway. Dunno, but I trust Orange just a little bit more because of it.).)
And it was so bemusing to me to see '98 and Trimax diehards rail against Stampede's animation style (the one that finally drew me into the series) and Milly's absence (because Milly as Meryl's novice partner couldn't do the job Roberto's character had to do) when fans were getting new material after 20 years - and that new material prompted fans like me who hadn't seen '98 or read Maximum, to do just that.
I admire and respect '98, but I won't revisit it like I do with Stampede. It'd be nice if Stampede slowed down and inserted a little more breathing room and humor, but I imagine that's a production-logistics consideration with CGI animation. I thought Orange did a phenomenal job capturing the same themes and packaging them into a shorter, more accessible series. Again, after four viewings, I'm still finding things to pick apart in Stampede. I think Orange really demonstrated the love and care they have for Trigun through Stampede's skillful storytelling and I'm eagerly awaiting Stargaze!
I have a theory that the reason so many people who were introduced to Trigun via '98 dislike Stampede, and vice-versa, is because each text is positioning the audience to view it from a completely opposite lens.
'98 does the same thing that its sister show, Cowboy Bebop does, which is to lure you in with the premise of turning your brain off for some good, simple fun, only to slight-of-hand you into realizing that oh shit there's themes, and now you've got a 15-page video essay.
Trigun Stampede does not want you to do that, in large part because it's a far denser text. There's like 7 different main themes and ideas bustling around and multiple story elements are told almost exclusively through film language (see Tesla, red-blue-purple color theory, and probably multiple more that I can't summon from the top of my head). It wants your brain on and intensely focusing the entire time and then you go on to write a 15-page video essay.
The tricky part is that you have to somehow communicate to the audience that you want them to do this, which is a hard ask because any hints you drop to hey, focus! aren't gonna be obvious enough to picked up by those people without being obtrusive.
The dramatic tension built up in episode 4 is built off of Wolfwood and this game of traitor-or-not that the narrative plays. 'Why is this man alone in the desert in completely inappropriate dress?' 'Why does he have a cross?' 'How is is he not dead?' and 'Okay so he's somehow survived this far but he's also just been hit by a fucking truck!?'. These are all questions that the story wants you to ask, because they help build up Wolfwood as being hella sus.
Enter Roberto, who conveniently has asking questions be his entire job. By having him explicitly point out various things throughout the story like this one, it signals that these are things we should be focusing on, especially since he's set up as someone who's been around the block a few times.
Here's some more examples of Roberto showing us what to remember, all from just the first episode:
This helpless guy they found in the desert has a gun on him. Why does he have a gun on him?
2. Cowardice is a matter of perspective, and perceived cowards may just be under pressure that we can't see (this is clearer in the English dub, where iirc the word 'experienced' is used rather than 'privileged').
3. This one's a red herring! Vash is, in fact, very tough, but this line still contrasts him against being perceived as naive even by someone as experienced as Roberto.
4. Fuck them cops (based)
Of course, the flipside is that Roberto will not live to see the end of this season. But much like how he leaves Meryl with the newfound experience she needs, he also leaves the audience with the curiosity that we will need going forward.

Last song: Hostage by Nothing But Thieves is the latest song that came up on my shuffle
Last Book: JJK Volume 7. It's been a while since I've read a prose book honestly, but I've really been enjoying manga recently
Last Show: Oban Star Racers. I watched a couple episodes as a kid and it was imprinted on my memory. Until recently, I couldn't remember what it was. Then someone in one of the discords I'm in posted a link to the episodes and it's unlocked some memories. It's a fun little cartoon!
Sweet/Savory/Spicy: I have a massive sweet tooth. Nothing against savory foods but I love a good pastry. Unfortunately, I have a weak little stomach and I can't do much spice
Last google: It was timer because I like to use the google timer to help me limit the time I spend on Tumblr. (I had a huge scrolling problem up until a year or two ago and the timer keeps me from getting sucked in)
Current Obsession: It's been years and it's still Trigun. The brainworms are strong.

#Something something the way victims of abuse end up feeling inhuman #something something the way even mentioning your own trauma is taboo #something something because you are so tied to your trauma that your very self becomes taboo by proxy #Wolfwood is a survivor of medical abuse and Vash experiences treatment by his brother heavily analogous to sexual assault #both experiences in real life that render their victims ‘dirty’ for even having experienced them - @eldritchneuro
You! You get it!!! Trigun is such a complex and nuanced exploration of trauma--both Trimax and Tristamp. Almost every character goes through something, whether in the course of the story or before (or both) and it affects them! It's not just fun set pieces or drama!!! And I feel like it's most thoroughly explored in Wolfwood, Vash, and Knives. It's just *clenches fist* so good
Just two children monsters
#I'm just rambling idk if I'm making sense#But I feel it in my bones#I feel like Legato is also a neat exploration#But since he's not really prominent in Tristamp yet...#We'll get there though#Trigun

As long as I'm here, I might as well say it: Trigun Stampede is kinky as fuck. It is genuinely hilarious to me that it passed under the radar how horny this show is. Fairy tales, the gothic and sci-fi are all very, very sexy genres.
Part of my frustration is that if one fixates on the visual language the older versions used, rather than taking the show on its own terms, that distracts from the ways in which Trigun Stampede is just as queer and dirty as the manga - sometimes more so.
In that ask - which IIRC was from you, @eldritchneuro - where I said I wasn't sure I had the terminology to analyse how Vash is positioned to be feminine... Well, that's mostly because I'm not at all confident I can describe the baffling eroticism that boy exudes in the appropriate terms. I think the shortest way would be: it doesn't matter what's in his pants when he's not the one dropping them.
I'm still a firm believer Orange made a mistake by changing the sci-fi esthetic of trimax. They lost so much man. Like the raw mix between flesh and metal. The Biopunk disturbance of it all. It mattered.
And It's still there don't get me wrong (you could not fully remove it if you tried) but it's not as.. disturbing, as deviant ? Even though, it's supposed to be! It's the core of the story isn't it?
Living beings used as machines and treated even worst!

#okay but I was discussing this with an irl friend #about how there's actually thematic relevance to this! #by using homoeroticism as a metaphor for divine faith and vice-versa #you establish the idea that Wolfwood finding salvation/repentance in Vash's ideals is just as important and meaningful #as the classic idea of a romantic or sexual relationship #so anyways these boys can store so much queerplatonic-ness in 'em - @eldritchneuro
You can't just leave that in the tags and instantly k.o. me oh my god
They really went and put Vash winking at Wolfwood on official art, huh
#(I mean that very light heartedly it's v good)#I think I've made some posts about Wolfwood finding faith through Vash before#AND I STAND BY THEM#I think#I don't remember them very well lol#But I feel like Stampede sets this up the best so far#Because he's NOT a priest in s1#He is technically a pastor but he chooses not to call himself that#He had no faith in that angel he was forced to serve#But in THIS angel?#This is a religion that he will commit to#Even if this emotionally constipated guy will never ever say as much#He's already made that choice in going back and rescuing Meryl#Uh oh I went off in my own tags whoops#Trigun#Vashwood

Ok but, y'know? One time I read a headcanon (or maybe it was in a fic?) that Wolfwood chooses not to wear shoes as a form of self-punishment, and I've never been the same since :')
If Wolfwood shows up in Trigaze with proper shoes, the fandom will collectively lose their shit
#He hates sand! We know that much!!! And yet!!!!!#Anyway I have to inflict this thought on everyone I see as often as I can#Trigun
