I loveeeee Eldritch Ralsei's design and personality, and I actually just love Eldritchrune by @lynxgriffin! I 100% recommend going to check Eldritchrune out, but if it's darker story isn't your cup of tea, then any of their other arts and stories!! My favorite of theirs is Dogs of Future Past, which I hopefully plan on drawing for soon :D!!

I'm sick right now and I wanted to make something but writing and drawing weren't cooperating, so I dug out this old recording I had of me doing a dub of an Eldritchrune comic and made a video out of it. Sorry about the audio quality, I don't have a proper mic.

I am not a voice actor, I can't do character voices, and I have no idea what I'm doing lol. I'm just here to have fun.

(Deltarune theory)

Tldr: Ralseis "unmasked" self is indeed a costume. He does NOT look like that. It is a costume to better suit his "role" and distract or earn the affection of the player.

One of the most jarring things about ralsei to me is his appearance. No, I don't think ralsei is asriel, yes I know they're anagrams. Ralsei is special. He's THE prince of the dark. So tell me please, why the hell does he look like your average boss monster from the light world. You'd think the "prince of the dark" would look kinda...dark? Nah he's white and pink with bashful eyelashes. I call bullshit on that. Look at this guy

I just can't bring myself to believe this is what he looks like. But, I think we do know what he does look like.

Behold our prince of the dark. "No no he took off his hat at the end of chapter 1! He's casted in shadow that's why he looks like that!" I hear you. But we've seen THIS version of ralsei without his hat already

No hat, still a black, less "boss monster " looking creature. We've also seen his "unmasked" self in multiple outfits, including hats. None of which shade his entire body to make his fur appear black.

Now, I understand maybe this was all to not allude to his "true" white fluffy appearance until it is revealed at the end of chapter 1. But I can't accept that. His silhouettes are completely different in each design.

Things like his horns, his height, the shape of his legs and feet and the fur on his face. That stuff shouldn't change if its just being taken out of the shadows.

I propose this. Ralsei has changed form to appease us(the player). It goes without saying that ralsei knows more than the other characters in the game. Infact, many would go as far to say as he knows he's IN a game.

Here comes the theory crafting. I believe ralsei has been told to take this shape. We can infer that ralsei has not been around long. Even if he has, he's been EXTREMELY secluded. His whole life has led up to meeting kris and Susie and carrying out his role in this story. I do not by any means think ralsei is evil. I do believe he is slightly mislead. He has likely chosen to or been told to shift his appearance to be cuter, fluffier, more approachable. He's the cute one after all.

If difficult for me to word this. I have such a specific view of deltarune and how meta I view it to be. I can however offer up an amazing video essay that helped me form my opinions and ideas for ralsei. I highly recommend it, and if you've read this much, you might as well watch it.

It has really interesting insight on ralseis character and has takes on him I haven't seen any body else have.

Conclusion

While I think it would be an amazing reveal, we won't know more about ralsei until the full game is released. If my theory is wrong, that's alright. Because I have fun imagining ralsei as a slightly skrunklier eldritch creature than an asriel look alike. And maybe some of you will adopt my "theory" or headcannon. Either way, I do think ralseis appearance will be addressed in the future. So until then, we'll see.

Also ralsei will definitely be one of the final bosses

oh boy more ralsei thoughts, hope you like those

i see some stuff with ralsei being used for horror sometimes. i kind of get it, because ralsei IS very much unstable, but i do take issues with the execution.

one form of ralsei horror is the idea of him being "yandere." this doesn't work for me. while yes, ralsei is desperate for the love and attention of lightners (kris in particular) he thinks of himself as beneath. he is weak, his life holds no significance outside of serving a higher power, he possesses no free will, stuff like that. the idea of forcing someone to stay with him against their will, and abusing them into loving him, is something he just wouldn't do, let alone could do. while ralsei doesnt enjoy being left alone or mistreated, he's very good at crushing these feelings. all fear is buried, all resentment turned inward, all sadness distracted from. on top of this, even if ralsei lacks a developed sense of right and wrong, ralsei believes that doing harm to a lightner is one of the wrongest things he could do. in a sense, Ralsei is a Puritan. he's not a misogynist, but he believes that he and all his fellow darkners are born into a meaningless and sinful life, and that they can only find meaning and be cleansed by serving their gods. he suppresses all his individuality, and is rude to people he thinks are "bad." for ralsei to act selfishly and maliciously towards his gods would be massively out of character for him, since even thinking about doing that sort of thing would have him hating himself.

another strain of ralsei horror is... i guess eldritch horror? the idea of ralsei as a mindless puppet of a malicious entity, who does horrifying things with a sweet smile on his face, like some sort of siren luring you into a trap or something. this is inaccurate to canon ralsei, but i think it could work, since ralsei would like to be thist. he possesses free will, and is capable of doubt and regret, and he hates that. ralsei's ideal self is perfect and obedient, never doing wrong by whatever higher power he follows (lightners or the prophecy), doesn't think, doesn't doubt, and is always happy. whether or not the power he serves is malicious, ralsei would absolutely choose to become a mindless drone if he could, and even when he possesses free will, he encourages others to pursue this as well, and this is where the horror comes from. one day you might see him and he's not himself anymore, and he might try and make you like that too. even then, even as just himself, there's a demon inside him that wants him to destroy himself and become an empty husk that serves obediently, a demon placed there by trauma, broken ideology, and fantasical narrative. he's effectively been brainwashed, and the horror comes from the idea that one day he might fully succumb to that. it doesn't help that this ideology literally tells him "being obedient to lightners is the only way to be happy."

sorry if these thoughts are disjointed.

as a finshing note, mindless drone ralsei WOULD imprison and manipulate you on orders from a higher power, because he's incapable of deeper connection or internal conflict. if you didnt want to obey the prophecy, he might lock you up until you agree to help, but at the same time he'd be smothering you with love and affection and indoctrinating you into his cult, because you're a lightner. and that's legitimately scary. normal ralsei wouldn't do that, especially not now, since he's growing as a person. he likes and cares about kris and susie beyond them being lightners and delta warriors. he wouldnt want to lock them up, and even if he tried to indoctrinate them, he'd feel guilty and ashamed over it, and he'd care that they were upset with him. mindless drone ralsei wouldn't feel conflicted, because under his rigid programming, he hasn't done anything wrong. he's treating the lightners well, and even if they're upset with him, he's ultimately doing the right thing because the prophecy is the ultimate moral good, and he's just helping them onto the right path.

OTP Kriselle - easily one of the most fascinating relationships in deltarune to me, both normal route and weird. I love them dearly and can’t wait to see where they go. I also think in a more canonical continuity a traditional romantic relationship wouldn’t feel right for them and perhaps they would thrive as queerplatonic partners instead. Y'know, they're “something else” Adspam - *arrow pointing at me* guy who got really invested into addisons as his ocs. You know how it is. Of course I love my adspam I made it up in accordance to what’s interesting to me Gasterspam - little guy meets eldritch grampa beyond his comprehension. Ten dead thirteen injured.

Krusie - I was team krusie in ch1 days and I still like them but nowadays I see them more as friends who might smooch if they’d like to. Krerdly - funny and cute. Addison polycule - see adspam above.

It's good Kris/Catti, Noelle/Catti - can't wait for the Catti and Jockington's spotlight. i think these ships might end up pretty good. Catti/Susie would probably go crazy too but she doesn't like her sighhh Queenkaard, Kingkaard, Queen and King - liberal family: female dad, beautiful fat husband, aging twink. Jevseam - they were a court magician, he was a court jester, can I make it any more obvious? Don't think it was ever official but there was *something* between them. Also queerplatonic. Tasque Manager/Swatch - I just like to imagine they like each other y'know T_T Could also be a brotp idc

Fun Gang - no explanation needed. Ralsei and Susie specifically - Ralsei and Susie!!!! So glad to see them bond in ch2. Noelle and Berdly - screw everyone and everything I want to believe they genuinely like each other. Kris and Spamton - I'm not sure if they honestly feel anything positive for each other but boy do I need to see them hang out.

Meh

Su/se/l/le - nothing wrong about them but I usually don't care for canon couples much. I think I'm not in the demographic for the "awkward teen crush" either. Happy for those who find comfort in them though!

Complicated

Kra/ls/ei - it's a thing in the game and I think it has interesting elements to it. The way Ralsei always wants to provide an enjoyable and fun fantasy experience for the lightners, him possibly being based off of some Kris's belonging and such and so. However I'm certain Kris doesn't want their relationship to have a romantic context. Just look at Ralsei and what he represents xd As such I guess it's more like a Weird Route situation.

Dislike

I don't seeeeeeee it.

I think Spam and Swatch were polite to each other during the bshot years as a resident and the head butler and afterwards they don't think about each other much aside from feeling varying levels of contempt.

I can't imagine Spam and Jevil meaningfully interacting and also their designs clash if you put them next to each other.

After a truly miserable experience, Kris is revived back in Ralsei's castle and can take a bit of a breather. Maybe some forbidden arcane knowledge can solve their problem!

you've mentioned that you've been thinking about a specific au lately on the blog 👀 whats the deal there

well me and @gasterofficial were talking about what would happen if gaster's version of ralsei WASN'T successfully made to be able to handle eldritch knowledge. I've discussed it before on the blog, but I have the headcanon that the light can literally burn darkners who aren't prepared for it. (this comes from spamton having quite a bit of dialogue implying that he was burned/changed in some way by the knowledge he gained.) in blogverse canon, ralsei's got very sensitive eyes because he's still recovering from his initial exposure to that knowledge.

so if he wasn't successfully built to handle more Light Exposure than your average darkner... the logical conclusion is that gaining too much knowledge would blind him. after researching, i don't think it would be full blindness as that's kind of rare, but it would impair him badly enough that he would have trouble navigating on his own.

this is a problem for gaster. he needs to have a darkner guide, and now he's got EIGHT busted little guys. ralsei's certainly clever and adaptable, but he is NOT used to functioning blind just yet and there's not much time left before the game absolutely needs to start. a functional guide is a critical necessity to save the world of deltarune. and gaster just does not have the resources to try again.

so, out of luck and out of options, gaster becomes the worlds worst Ghost Guide to assist ralsei in his Actual Guide duties. guy who tells ralsei about his surroundings and also never shuts the fuck up. and is also his ghost dad who can't be perceived by others unless they're in a truly liminal space.

so what arises is a truly dysfunctional and codependent parent-child dynamic between these two. gaster likes ralsei but like... never really gives him room to make decisions on his own since hes constantly telling him what to do. ultimately he believes ralsei just kind of has to be a means to an end, no matter how much personal affection gaster has for him, due to the nature of ralsei being Born To Save The World, and that makes their relationship deeply unhealthy. meanwhile ralsei, who is a bit traumatized from being Literally Scorched By Horrible Knowledge in the first minute of his existence, is pretty happy to just let himself be directed constantly by someone who is kind to him and appears to have his best interests at heart. he ends up being quite sheltered due to all this. plus gaster also keeps telling him constantly Not To Think Too Much About The Fucked Up Things so he's gotten good at that.

thematically, the entire thing, at least for me, is another lens through which to look at deltarune's themes of agency and personhood. children, particularly disabled children, frequently have their personhood and agency denied to them because of the idea that they aren't capable of handling themselves. that's not to say that children and disabled people don't need SUPPORT, of course, but that support should be enabling them to make decisions for themselves when possible and appropriate, rather than denying them opportunities for agency. adding those particular lenses onto ralsei's canonical status as a darkner (which is a category of Unperson within the narrative) provides a lot of interesting ground with which to explore his emerging independence and self-actualization. also I just think its rad to think about weird Fucked Up Ghost Dad shenanigans

Now that you mention it it's likely that while Ralsei can't hear/see the player, it could be likely he's aware of our presence as a guiding force of some sort. I don't really know well enough to articulate it as good as other theorists do, but he does seem to address us directly or Kris indirectly sometimes.

From this AU's take, Ralsei isn't aware of there being 2 players but does get surprised when sometimes Kris does one thing, then sometimes does something completely contradictory to the previous thing. But who knows, I guess we gotta see if the whole idea clicks in chapter 3.
