day 21:
Tumblr media
this is the gratest thing i've ever created (if i didn't get lazy with the background. again.). this somehow feels the most humourous of all the drawings so far. elder hu looks so angery like lmao. i've memed on it quite a bit while making it, especially on how elder hu came out. i'll show you some stuff kinda "behind the scenes" after everything is released.
also might i say i really like how the hatching looks?

Elder Hu and Infection in Fungal Wastes
Tumblr media
Elder Hu, dream warrior you can fight in Fungal Wastes. Called the god of “travellers and sages” in the Hall of Gods. Said by the Hunter to have “Travelled the world tending to those affected by the plague.”
Tumblr media
I’ve marked his location on this map with an orange star, as well as the location of the Mantis Village.
You may find his grave up there. When he first speaks to you, he gives you this dialog:
Have you come to tame this savage, ruined land? Many have come to purify this place, but all who dwell here are eventually consumed. Yes, even the wild bugs lurking below us. They were once proud like you, but now they are only monsters. Beware dreams of glory, child. Turn back, and do not return.
Elder Hu is suggested to have been infected, and still be stuck in the mindset he had when he died. He was killed by the mantises, when he tried to “purify” them. His mindset is still warped after death, keeping his incorrect perception that the mantises were infected. It’s possible that’s why he calls them “savage”.
The “savage” and “wild” part of his dialog is not quite what I want to examine right now. This is again another time where I was making a larger theory (which does deal with these aspects), and it turned into a huge tangent that needed its own post.
Right now, I’m wondering about his mission to purify.
He expects that Ghost has come from elsewhere to “tame” or “purify”, and says that others have before. As his journal entry says he traveled to treat people, I am thinking that he himself is from outside Fungal Wastes. And…well. Backing up a bit. I do think he specifically is referring to Fungal Wastes when he says “savage, ruined land”. I considered the possibility that he was talking about all of Hallownest. But it would be a bit of an odd situation for someone to travel into Hallownest from the outside for helping with this I think, rather than to stay away. (And as I talked about in a recent post, people can be referred to as travelers even if they’re only traveling within the kingdom). I also think it would be odd for him to say that “all who dwell here are eventually consumed” if it was in reference to all of Hallownest.
—Now, even though I say this, if it was in reference to Hallownest rather than just Fungal Wastes, it would actually be a true statement. Nowhere in Hallownest is safe from the infection. But Elder Hu presumably lived and died long ago. Traveling the land to tend to those infected, he presumably had not have given up on those he was treating. (Unless his “tending” was only to kill the infected, since he’s a warrior, which would be incredibly messed up and…well, I wouldn’t entirely put it past the game to do that with all the other messed up things in it. But I’m assuming this is not it). He may try to discourage others due to the dangers, as he tells Ghost to turn back. Someone still actively trying to help, I don’t envision saying something so pessimistic as to imply everyone would fall to infection. Plus…where would he think Ghost would have to turn back to? To leave the kingdom? It seems unlikely to me, when it seems a universal belief that your mind will be lost if you do so.
I do have another possible interpretation though, for why he would specifically be speaking about Fungal Wastes being infected. When infected, the Radiance may warp what is already within a bug. He found it his duty to “purify” the mantises and died in the attempt, probably because it was a warped version of who he was, rather than someone entirely overwritten. I wonder if there might be a reason why he was in Fungal Wastes in particular. Even if he traveled all of Hallownest for his work, it’s possible that Fungal Wastes had already been in need of healers for other reasons.
Fungal Wastes is home to “fungified husks”. The journal entry says: “The bugs of Hallownest are so pathetic that being infected by poisonous fungi actually increases their chances of survival! They really are absurd creatures.”
Tumblr media
Here we have a reference to an infection that had nothing to do with the Radiance. Fungal Wastes are said by multiple characters to be full of noxious spores. Could Elder Hu have expected that Fungal Wastes in particular was bad for bugs, due to fungal spores? There is a single husk hornhead in this region, but other than that, the only “standard Hallownest bugs” (those basic husk enemies like can be found in Crossroads and the City) are the fungified husks.
Tumblr media
There are also a pair of ghosts in Queen’s Gardens (probably grasshoppers), Caelif & Fera Orthop, where one of them seems infected with fungus. The ghosts themselves make no reference to it though, and their dialog only indicates that they had been exploring Queen’s Gardens and didn’t know which way to go. Perhaps they had previously traveled through Fungal Wastes, but there’s really no way to know. The fungus does seem to be a different type.
Could these fungified bugs be treated? I don’t know. Perhaps it could be treated in its early stages. In any case I expect it would be easier to treat than an infection of mind. Even so…I would expect if Elder Hu really had had a long career as a healer, he would naturally try to help when this new infection came on the scene.
These fungified bugs are also not the mushroom people or the mantises who are native to Fungal Wastes. Elder Hu is called a god of travelers. I do wonder if his primary focus was on these bugs who end up moving into the region. “All who dwell here are eventually consumed”, he says.
Anyway. His grave is marked “We remember the Elder.” It’s also not particularly close to the Mantis Village, where he died. Someone must have remembered him fondly to make this grave for him.
One last point. Fungal Wastes are primarily home to the mushroom people, and the mantises. Obviously the spores are fine for the mushroom people and may very well originate from them. The Hunter says, on Shrumal Warriors:
Something queer in the air has caused these mushrooms to grow hearts, minds, and even faces! This means they now fear for their lives, like all other living creatures.
The whole area of the Wastes always has spores in the air as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The spores look the same as those when you have the spore shroom charm, and those spores from the charm have the ability to damage others. They clearly can be dangerous, and also have a connection to the mushroom people and their hive mind.
But even so, the mantises live in the region seemingly with no issue.
The mantises are able to resist the infection from the Radiance. Were they already used to resisting infection from the spores? Or, could you even say it as, resisting being taken over into the mushroom hive mind? –mm, depends how you want to frame it I suppose, as a more physical infection (with possible consequence of making you connected via mind), or something more mental that would then affect your physical body. Not sure. But the point is, it’s possible such preexisting resistance would help them stay strong against the Radiance. They are, as it seems, the only ones able to resist as a species, the only ones of the infected seemingly having done so on purpose.
It all makes it particularly ironic I think. Elder Hu attacking the one species that the Radiance could not get a foothold on. Perhaps she particularly tried to get him to attack them, because of this. But that’s just speculation.

I made a vesselsona! It wandered away from hallownest and landed in the elders tribe
Upon reaching its second molt it left in search of its home, to learn about its nature and why it lacks so much of what the elders have by birth.
It keeps its beads close, as the lingering light of soul poured within keeps its mind alive.
It freezes in abject horror to find what it was looking for, a mountain of infant shells in the deep, deep bottom of the world.

Elder Hu?
I take it you're still fairly early on in the game, right?
Later in the game, you'll eventually get an item that completely trivializes his fight, to the point where he isn't even a challenge; just an annoyance that keeps trying to delay his inevitable defeat hdgdgsf. That's why you've seen people talking about how easy his fight is!
So, one option for you is to simply wait, if you'd like, and go back to him later, when you're guaranteed to have an easier time.
But, if you're desperate for his essence (or you just refuse to give up until you win), then:
Elder Hu is just. Very timing-based. I'll admit, I haven't bothered fighting him without the Trivializing Item since my very first Hollow Knight playthrough dgshshf.
I guess just take it slow, and don't get too greedy with the amount of hits you get on him in one go? It might also be best to stick closer to the middle of the arena, rather than the edges, so that you have two possible directions to dash in when he uses his main attack (the row of hammers with the gaps in between).
The only safe time you have to heal is during that attack with the pairs of hammers that start on each end of the battle area and move to the middle. And even then, that's only if you dodge past the hammers early on while they're still decently far from the middle. I wouldn't bother healing during his other attack; I don't think you have time.
One thing to note, though, is that unlike a lot of other Warrior Dreams, Elder Hu doesn't have any additional phases when he gets to a certain health. So if you only think you've made zero progress because you've never seen him change up his attacks, then you might actually be closer to beating him than you think!
Also, depending on how much you've upgraded your nail, Elder Hu will take somewhere between 50 and 31 nail hits to kill (which can be sped up by using spells)
As for Charms... Mark of Pride might make it so that you don't have to jump to hit him? But I'm not sure. If that is the case, though, then I could see that being helpful! Soul Catcher will help you get more SOUL to heal and cast spells, which could be helpful since you might not be able to get frequent hits on him. Shaman Stone is basically always good, and will mean that Vengeful Spirit will do more damage than your nail does (though it might already, depending on your nail). Though I forget if Elder Hu is susceptible enough to knockback for double Vengeful Spirit hits to be possible with him (a lot of Warrior Dreams are, though!). Similarly, Fragile Strength is always useful, but I totally understand if you don't want to risk breaking it. And I've never actually used Dashmaster before personally, but the faster dash cooldown might help you if you get into a bad situation? I'm not certain.
I know you won't have the Charm Notches for all of those, but you can pick a couple of em! Or if you'd like, you can tell me what specific Charms you have, and I can try to figure out a good set for you? I know this can't be your first visit to Fungal Wastes, since you have the Dream Nail, but I'm not sure what the rest of your equipment looks like.
I am STRUGGLING to beat this one dream warrior in hollow knight ok.
So I look up on yt, google how to beat this dream warrior. So I get pretty much zero results for this particular one, it's the one In the fungal wastes. The only results are: this one yt video of someone fighting it, a reddit post containing spoilers, and several people talking about how easy these guys are.
Like, BITCH! you call this EASY????? I've been at this one guy for HOURS and I e mae ZERO progress, and you call it EASY!
The mantis Lords were easier then this guy!
Anyway, if you have ANY tips at all for this guy, please let me know 😭😭😭
