Bach to the Blues is an album performed by the Ramsey Lewis Trio that was recorded in 1964 and released on the Argo label.

“The group performs five original themes based on classical music, along with four blues-oriented tunes. Although a touch lightweight, the music is enjoyable enough and certainly superior to most of Lewis’ output in the 1970s and ’80s”- Scott Yanow / AllMusic.

Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis Jr. (born May 27, 1935 - September 12, 2022) is a jazz composer, pianist, and radio personality. He has recorded over 80 albums and has received five gold records and three Grammy Awards.

He was born in Chicago. He began taking piano lessons at the age of four. He would eventually join a jazz group called the Clefs. He formed the Ramsey Lewis Trio with drummer Isaac “Red” Holt and bassist Eldee Young. They joined up with Chess Records.

The trio issued their debut album, Ramsey Lewis and his Gentle-men of Swing. Following their hit “The In Crowd” (the single reached #5 on the pop charts, and the album #2) they concentrated more on pop material. Young and Holt left to form Young-Holt Unlimited.

He was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with “The In Crowd”, “Hang On Sloopy”, and “Wade in the Water”. All three singles each sold over one million copies and were awarded gold discs. Many of his recordings attracted a large non-jazz audience. He played electric piano, although later in the decade he was sticking to acoustic and using an additional keyboardist in his groups. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #phibetasigma

The In Crowd is a live album by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, recorded in 1965 at the Bohemian Caverns nightclub in Washington, D.C., and released on the Argo label.

The Allmusic review by Michael G. Nastos awarded the album 4½ stars and stated “This is the moment where Lewis shined the brightest, the ‘in crowd’ at the club was verbally into it, and the time.”

Effortless cool, the quintessential jazz dinner-party album

Thoughts

I've been searching for this for unpretentious but engaging jazz and the trio here nails it. There's a comfortable loose feel to this, as if they know what they've got is gold.

When I refer to jazz dinner albums it means bop but not so technical that it's distracting. This succeeds with it's cool, samba like swing, busy downtown vibe and appropriate moments of somber builds.
