Short Essay: The Graduate (1967)

Mike Nichols’ The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, is the coming-of-age story of Benjamin, an aimless college graduate contemplating the direction of his life. During this tumultuous period, Benjamin is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson, only to end up falling in love with her daughter Elaine.

The film, adapted from Charles Webb’s novel of the same name, was released in December 1967, The Graduate has made a worldwide gross amount of $105,015,318 on an estimated $3 million budget. It was a huge success, resulting in Mike Nichols’ 1968 Oscar win for Best Director. Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, and Katharine Ross were also nominated for Oscars for their roles. The Graduate also won a Grammy for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture.

“'The Graduate,' the funniest American comedy of the year, is inspired by the free spirit which the young British directors have brought into their movies. It is funny, not because of sight gags and punch lines and other tired rubbish, but because it has a point of view. That is to say, it is against something. Comedy is naturally subversive… In the direct style of new British directors, the audience is the target of the joke, and the funny events do not happen in the movie -- they are the movie… When something funny happens, the actors don't react; the movie itself reacts by what it shows next.” – Roger Ebert (1967)

Even the original poster of the movie expresses the humor that Roger Ebert wrote about in his review. The quote "This is Benjamin. He's a little worried about his future," paired with an image of the character behind a woman's leg pulling on a stocking, portrays the comedy that is to be found in this film.

 A great example of Roger Ebert's observation of the movie reacting to comedy rather than the actors reacting to it is the scene where Benjamin grabs Mrs. Robinson's breast. Mrs. Robinson is unfazed and fusses with her sweater. Benjamin turns around, walks across the room, and bangs his head against the wall. In fact, this was all unscripted. Dustin Hoffman spontaneously improvised grabbing Anne Bancroft's breast and found her lack of reaction so funny that he almost broke character. To stay in character, he had to turn around, walk away, and bang his head against the wall to hide his laughter from Mike Nichols. This improvised scene made it into the final cut.

Any review of The Graduate would be remiss to leave out Simon and Garfunkel’s musical contribution. The famous song “Mrs. Robinson” was written specifically for The Graduate, and the film’s score hosts many of their other songs such as The Sound of Silence, Scarborough Fair, and April Come She Will.

In the above clip, the Simon and Garfunkel song “The Sound of Silence” is used to join scenes of Benjamin's emptiness. Dustin Hoffman's vacant facial expressions pair well with Simon and Garfunkel's music to express the isolation the character is feeling. This adds to the films style, look, and feel as well with this demonstration of the passage of time.

The beginning of the song “Mrs. Robinson” starts at night when Benjamin is searching for Elaine. The intro of the song (instrumental, with the only lyrics being "de de de de") is dragged out while overlaying a few scenes as Benjamin continues his search. As dawn breaks, Benjamin drives onto the Bay Bridge towards Berkeley and the song breaks into its full version. I find Peter Bradshaw's observation of this song's impact very enlightening. Although not in the script, the use of this song and its lyrics does offer the feel of forgiveness towards Mrs. Robinson.

The style of the film is also quite consistent in it's camera work. At times, certain camera shots and angles are used to add or remove distance from characters. In the beginning of the film, the shot is framed tight onto Benjamin’s face at the party. Although all he wants to do is escape, the guest of the party proceed to invade his personal space as demonstrated through these crowded, tight shots.

Camera zooms were also used to create distance, as such in the scene where Mrs. Robinson says goodbye to Benjamin after he confessed the affair to Elaine.

A conventional film, The Graduate was made to make money and appeal to both older and younger generations. At the time, Mike Nichols was a relatively new director who had just seen success with his first film, Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf. Dustin Hoffman was virtually unknown as an actor, and this was his first feature film. The use of Simon and Garfunkel’s music for the score compounded the audience draw. Prior to The Graduate’s release, they performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, which is widely regarded as the beginning of “The Summer of Love.” Influential in their reach, it is no doubt that their participation in The Graduate drew larger numbers to the box office.

In 1967, the younger generations were becoming more rebellious, resistant, and unconforming, which was a fitting audience for those same themes found in The Graduate. This was also demonstrated in protest events such as the March on the Pentagon in 1967.

The Graduate has inspired other movies, especially with its older-woman-younger-man relationship dynamic. Films such as Harold & Maude and American Pie notably use this same dynamic. The term “Mrs. Robinson” is still used to this day in popular culture to refer to age-gap relationships or attractive older woman (sometimes also referred to as “cougars.”) Although released in 1967, this film is just as entertaining and relevant today as it was then.

Não haverá separação

Deus amou o mundo de tal maneira que deu o Seu Filho unigênito, para que todo o que Nele crê não pereça, mas tenha a vida eterna. João 3:16

Eu nunca havia conseguido levar uma gestação até o fim. Da última vez, eu estava grávida de cinco meses e meio quando sofri um aborto espontâneo de uma menina. Vou esperar ansiosa para cuidar dela na Nova Terra. A Bíblia nos diz, em Apocalipse 21:4, que lá “já não existirá mais morte, já não haverá luto, nem pranto, nem dor”.

Então, em vez de ter filhos, eu adquiri uma cadela Shih Tzu de quatro quilos chamada Sadie. Eu amava Sadie como se fosse minha filha e muita gente gostava dela também, pois era muito bonitinha e dócil. Eu a levava para todos os lugares. Ela me acompanhou nos momentos difíceis, pois parecia saber exatamente quando devia pular no meu colo e apoiar a cabecinha no meu braço. Quando me tornei cristã, tive vontade de ministrar estudos bíblicos e Sadie se sentava para me ouvir ensaiar o que eu ia ensinar. Ela prestava atenção, como se estivesse compreendendo tudo que eu dizia.

Infelizmente, quando Sadie envelheceu, ela ficou doente. No fundo do meu coração, eu não queria perdê-la e não entendia quão grave era a doença dela. Deus, em Sua misericórdia, sabia que eu não seria capaz de praticar a eutanásia na minha amada cadelinha e meu marido também não. Então, um dia, ela desceu do sofá e alguma coisa aconteceu. Ela morreu nos meus braços e nos braços do meu marido. Fiquei totalmente arrasada!

Entrei em luto e chorei por ela durante três meses. À noite, eu olhava para a caminha dela ao lado da minha e chorava. Então, certa manhã, durante meu momento devocional, clamei a Deus que tirasse a dor da separação de dentro do meu coração. Então ouvi-O dizer: Sei o que você está sentindo, Eu também senti a separação do Meu Filho quando Ele estava na cruz morrendo por você . Naquele momento, compreendi realmente por que Deus amou o mundo a ponto de dar Seu único Filho para morrer pelos nossos pecados. Tudo o que precisamos fazer é confessá-los e aceitar Jesus como nosso Senhor e Salvador.

Sempre vou sentir saudade da minha pequena Sadie, contudo, quando penso em minha perda, lembro-me do grande sacrifício que Deus fez por você e por mim. Ele teve que Se separar do Seu Filho para que nós pudéssemos ter a vida eterna, onde não haverá separações.

Pensamento: A estratégia do inimigo para nos enganar é fazer com que duvidamos da fidelidade de Deus em responder nossas orações; sendo assim, acabamos ficando incrédulos, ou seja, tendo pensamentos negativos que irão se inflamar em nós, por isso, nossas orações não são respondidas quando: Quando nossas orações não estão de acordo com a vontade de Deus: "Se pedirmos alguma coisa segundo a sua vontade, ele nos ouve" I João 5:14

- Quando temos como meta apenas O realizar: "Se eu no coração contemplara a vaidade, o Senhor não me teria ouvido" Salmos 66:18

- Quando não mostramos zelo em ajudar Deus na resposta: Esperamos que nossas orações façam com que Deus trabalhe nós. "Vos ordenamos isto: se alguém não quer trabalhar, também não coma" II Tessalonicenses 3:10

- Quando temos um ressentimento alojado no coração: "Perdoa-nos como perdoamos aos outros" Mateus 6:14

- Quando não esperamos muito de nossas orações: Quando questionamos o poder da oração, duvidamos de sua eficaz, e Deus não age na dúvida, ele não responde oração sem fé, pois, nossa falta de paciência é uma prova legível de que, não esperamos muito de nossa oração.

- Quando nós mesmos tentamos dizer como Deus deveria responder: A única pessoa para qual ditamos leis é aquela em quem não confiamos. "Ele simplesmente deseja que deixemos nossos pedidos alojados em seus poderosos braços". Enfim, desista de pensar: "A resposta vai demorar tanto, que se vier nem vou aproveitar..."

Confie em Deus, pois ele irá responder no tempo mais oportuno, pode ter certeza de que quando a resposta vier, virá na forma e na hora em que será mais apreciada. Se não vale a pena esperar por aquilo que você orou, então não vale a pena pedir !!! (Elaine que Deus continue lhe usando para nos abençoar... em nome de Jesus... amém).

Oração: Senhor meu Deus, quero reconhecer que tenho sido incrédula, que tenho duvidado do teu poder e até mesmo desistido de minhas petições; perdoe-me e me ensine a pedir, me ensina a agir e aguardar em Ti, assim como tu me ensinaste desde o inicio, pois em quanto eu espero quero louvá-lo pela minha benção já recebida, em nome de Jesus amém.

COMO RECONHECER O ESPÍRITO SANTO?

O começo de uma caminhada Cristã exige muita força e coragem, é o início da sua luta contra os principados e potestades; por isso, é importante que você se limpe e se alimente todos os dias na palavra de Deus. 

O diabo, por exemplo, é o maior conhecedor da palavra de Deus, porém, nós vasos de barro, meros pó da terra temos a revelação da palavra por meio do Espírito tão agraciado no novo testamento. 

Por sermos uma criação tão inferior, Lucifer ou Satanás como quiser chamá-lo, tem ÓDIO puro de todos nós, porque a sua essência é vinda do fogo e da água, ele era um ser muito poderoso no céu, mas com sua nova posição pode até ser o mais forte dos demônios, mas nunca mais será o mais poderoso nos céus, ele odeia o Cordeiro mesmo tudo tendo sido feito para Ele e por Ele. 

O começo da minha jornada foi bem difícil, mas eu te garanto, quanto mais você busca e entende os planos do Senhor (mesmo que nem sempre entenda) com mais sede e fome você fica, mas a boa notícia é essa, pois o seu vazio nunca mais voltará, pois só Ele pode nos preencher. 

Podemos ficar na dúvida de "quem tá falando comigo?" Quando ouve aquela vozinha na sua cabeça, acontece que a sua mente está conectada com a quarta dimensão enquanto o seu corpo faz parte da terceira dimensão.  

Tudo isso significa que a sua mente, graças a glândula pineal, você consegue enxergar o real formato de todos os seres que estão presos nas outras dimensões. 

Conforme você esteja em cada dimensão o seu corpo tem um formato, por exemplo, na terceira dimensão obtemos o corpo humano, mas na quarta dimensão é o que consideramos de dimensão espiritual. Por isso doenças como esquizofrenia é de efeito espiritual, portanto a sua glândula fica totalmente aberta, então você vê todos os tipos de seres que existem nessa dimensão, pois a essência deles é feita a partir do plasma, então com olhos humanos você nunca verá um ser espiritual. 

Tá, Elaine. Entendi. Mas como diferenciar quem é o demônio e quem é o Espírito Santo? 

Acontece que se você colocar tudo que te disse até aqui em prática, você já vai perceber a resposta. 

Acontece que quanto mais buscamos e desejamos ser como Cristo e temos a vontade de morrer para este mundo renunciando todos os prazeres da carne, todos os seus sentidos ficarão aguçados e sensíveis.  

Quando você leva a sério este compromisso, você vai entender que a voz do Espírito é suave, é doce, mas ela é de confronto. Um demônio só se passa por ser de luz para quem não declara o nome do Filho de Deus, Cristo Jesus. Pois todos nós já fomos luz, porém o que muda tudo é o código fonte para sair dessa Matrix, novamente, o Messias, o Filho de Deus. 

Você sempre será confrontado pelas suas ações e estilo de vida, pois se decidiu seguir a Cristo, deve negar a si mesmo! Você só será confortado pelo Espírito Santo quando o diabo te atacar pelas suas renúncias, quando ele ficar tão incomodado a ponto de querer te destruir. 

O Espírito Santo é um presente da santíssima trindade para nos ajudar a vencer o mal de cada dia, assim como o nosso lindo Criador nos deixou uma linda armadura de ouro. (EFÉSIOS 6:10-20) 

Quando você abrir seu olho espiritual, você verá que este mundo nunca irá se comparar ao que Jesus preparou para nós. 

Quer fazer o inferno tremer? Quer participar da guerra? Declare a vitória do sacrifício do Cordeiro de Deus em sua vida!  

Mas não abandone o hábito, pois quando a casa está limpa, o demônio que ali habitava trará consigo mais 7 demônios com ele, e como você não está mais 'precisando' de Jesus, eles vão fazer o que quiser com você até você mesmo querer se destruir. 

Não se engane, irmão. Esse mundo aqui já está caindo aos pedaços, eles querem que você perca o tempo para garantir a sua salvação, afinal... quando o tempo acabar todas as dimensões se unificarão, então toda a raça humana que não seguiu o Messias será devorada e estraçalhada por todos os monstros. 

Jesus quer te salvar de tudo isso, Ele não quer o seu mal! Só que você precisa entender que é necessário nascer de novo. 

Eu te desafio a ler o livro de João seguindo o passo a passo do devocional que postei para vocês ontem.

Dezembro.

Esse mês está sendo O PIOR pra minha ansiedade. Jesus, minha irmã se acidentou, foi pro hospital, temos que ir pro rio as pressas. Aí eu passei um calor horripilante naquela bosta de Rio de Janeiro.

Os próximos dias no rio foram SÓ ansiedade, crise, papo de processo onde o acidente ocorreu, eu tento evitar o máximo fazer parte do assunto, mas ao mesmo tempo isso me faz parecer insensível por não querer ver minha irmã no hospital, o que eu sei que é um pouco, mas eu sinto que eu to ficando maluca de ansiedade, aí eu voltei pra casa e vi meus cachorros, o que me deixou SUPER feliz. Agora eu estou na casa da Elaine dormindo no sofá e ansiosa pra caramba.

Perguntaram umas duas vezes sobre o futuro, a primeira foi: Minha irmã me perguntou se eu visitaria ela quando ela se mudasse, e eu pensei: Nossa mas eu já teria me matado por lá.

A segunda foi como eu me vejo (ou algo assim) com 20 anos, que foi a idade que eu falei pra mim mesma que eu não consigo me imaginar tendo, por que eu não consigo me imaginar estando viva adulta sabe? Aos vinte anos eu pretendo morrer.

Isso começou a me dar ainda mais pensamentos suicidas, e eu vou sim me drogar inteira pra finalmente falar sobre isso pra Fabiani. Chorando mesmo, falando sobre a tristeza que eu sinto sobre ser adulta.

Esse com certeza foi meu pior Dezembro. Quero chorar, odeio isso, odeio ser desse jeito, odeio entrar em pânico em vez de só experienciar um nervorsismo normal. Jesus!!! HOJE FOI SÓ ANSIEDADE! ISSO ME DEIXA LOUCA SÓ QUERO PARAR DE PENSAR!!! Só quero ignorar tudo e acordar quando a none estiver em casa e tudo voltar ao normal. Só isso.

Critical Quotes & Visual Resources: The Graduate (1967) by Rachel Powers

Even the original poster of the movie expresses the humor that Roger Ebert wrote about in his review. The quote "This is Benjamin. He's a little worried about his future," paired with an image of the character behind a woman's leg pulling on a stocking, portrays the comedy that is to be found in this film.

In the above clip, Mike Nichols uses the song The Sound of Silence to join together scenes of Benjamin's emptiness. Dustin Hoffman's vacant facial expressions pair well with Simon and Garfunkel's music to express the isolation the character is feeling.

The beginning of the song Mrs. Robinson starts at night when Benjamin is searching for Elaine. The intro of the song (instrumental, with the only lyrics being "de de de de") is dragged out while overlaying a few scenes as Benjamin continues his search. As dawn breaks, Benjamin drives onto the Bay Bridge towards Berkeley and the song breaks into it's full version. I find Peter Bradshaw's observation of this song's impact very enlightening. Although not in the script, the use of this song and it's lyrics does offer the feel of forgiveness towards Mrs. Robinson. From Benjamin's perspective, things are no longer about her - he has moved on with no need to pass judgement.

Como será a eternidade? Essa é uma pergunta que certamente milhares de pessoas fazem a si mesmas. Mas a resposta fica vaga para muitos. Entretanto, existe um indicador que pode revelar um pouco da morada eterna daqueles cuja vida está sob o senhorio de Jesus Cristo. Falando sobre esse tema, o cantor e compositor Filipe Marques faz o lançamento independente da canção “Eternidade”. Ele conta que no dia 18 de agosto de 2018, começaram as gravações do projeto “Glorioso”, composto por dez canções que exaltam o poder de Deus. Dentre essas canções, destaca-se a música “Eternidade”, que mostra “como será o nosso destino como filhos de Deus, a eternidade com o Senhor”. Filipe continua dizendo que a canção nasceu de uma leitura intimista do Evangelho de João feita em seis meses. Durante aproximadamente três meses, a leitura do último momento de Jesus com os discípulos o impactou profundamente, levando-o a escrever a canção “Eternidade”: “Ela começa com o verso ‘Não se turbe o coração, crede em Deus, crede em mim. Na casa de meu pai há muitas moradas, eu vou para o Pai, mas voltarei e onde estiver, estejais vós também’. Nesse lugar, não haverá choro ou doenças, assim, ‘onde os mudos cantarão uma canção ao Cordeiro de Deus para sempre, onde os coxos correrão e os cegos verão a face do Senhor, que brilha mais que o Sol’”. Durante todo esse período, o Senhor ministrava ao seu coração em momentos cotidianos, como no trabalho, na igreja e ao dirigir, “sobre como seria a nossa vivência nesse lugar. Essa experiência quebrantou meu coração e me mostrou o lugar para qual estamos destinados”. Para a gravação deste projeto, Filipe enfrentou muitos e grandes desafios que quase inviabilizaram a sua realização. Uma semana antes da primeira data marcada, ele se acidentou e quebrou a clavícula, precisando remarcar a gravação. Quatro meses depois, uma semana antes da nova data, ele sofreu um acidente automobilístico com o capotamento do veículo: “Nesse momento, vimos a poderosa mão de Deus impedindo que o veículo descesse um penhasco. Desde então, a gravação foi um milagre do Senhor. No dia exato, amanheci totalmente rouco e enfrentamos vários outros empecilhos. Sempre gostei de conversar com crianças. Para mim, elas são um lembrete constante de que a vida é boa e simples. Elas são como vozes que vêm do passado, da criança que fui, para me questionar sobre o tipo de vida que levo no presente.

Há pouco tempo, recebi o resultado de uma pesquisa feita por profissionais de educação e psicologia com crianças de quatro a oito anos de idade. Todas responderam à pergunta: “O que é amor para você?” Acho que elas acertaram nas respostas. Quer ver? Separei algumas que mais me tocaram:

“Quando minha avó pegou reumatismo, ela não podia se debruçar para pintar as unhas dos pés. Desde então, é meu avô quem pinta para ela, mesmo ele tendo artrite.” Rebecca, oito anos.

“Quando alguém ama você, a maneira como diz seu nome é diferente. Você apenas sabe que seu nome está seguro em sua boca.” Billy, quatro anos.

“O amor é como uma velhinha e um velhinho que ainda são amigos mesmo depois de se conhecerem tão bem.” Tommy, seis anos.

“Amor é quando minha mamãe faz café para meu papai e ela toma um gole antes de dar a ele, para ter certeza de que o gosto está bom.” Danny, oito anos.

“Amor é você falar a um menino ‘que camisa linda você está usando’, e ele passar a usar a camisa todo dia.” Noelle, sete anos.

“Amor é quando a mamãe dá o melhor pedaço de frango para o papai.” Elaine, cinco anos.

“Amor é quando seu cachorro lambe seu rosto mesmo depois de você deixá-lo sozinho o dia todo.” Mary Ann, quatro anos.

“Amor é quando você oferece suas batatinhas fritas sem esperar que a pessoa lhe ofereça as batatinhas dela.” Chrissy, seis anos.

“Deus poderia ter dito palavras mágicas para os pregos caírem da cruz, mas Ele não disse. Isso é amor.” Max, cinco anos.

Não foi por acaso que Jesus disse que, para entrarmos em Seu reino, deveríamos ser como crianças. Que seu coração esteja sensível hoje para perceber o amor, e mais do que isso: que o Céu possa usar sua vida como uma declaração de amor a alguém.
