omg thanks for sending this and giving me a reason to share my opinions 👀 this got really long because i have a lot to say apparently

first of all, i genuinely love and enjoy this show and that seems to be an unpopular opinion recently? like i was shocked when i logged on after watching volume 2 and everyone on my dash hated it because i loved it. and i love all the other seasons, too. yeah obviously there’s some parts i don’t like and things i would change but overall i still think it’s really good. but yeah mandatory “i do actually really like the show” before i start complaining about some things

s1 > s4 > s3 > s2

i don’t understand the obsession with character death. not as in i don’t understand why people don’t want characters to die but i don’t understand the constant need to talk about how characters are “definitely” going to die. no main character has been killed off throughout the whole show and yet pre-s4 no one would shut up about characters dying. also after the reaction to eddies death i think the duffers are gonna be too scared to kill anyone off lol

on the other hand, killing el off/not giving her a happy ending would be the single greatest mistake the show could make

el’s side plot in s2 is one of the highlights of the show for me. the lost sister will probably forever be my favorite episode of the show. ive never understood the hate it gets. im really hoping that kali comes back in s5 and helps fight vecna

el is the only Main character. there are obviously many other characters that are leads but she is ultimately the main character. the entire show revolves around her and her plot(s).

nancy has some of the best development in the entire show. ive seen so many people say she has no development outside of the love triangle and i find that so surprising because she’s changed soo much. her entire journey to wanting to be a reporter directly stems from her not being listened to and her desire to do something about barbs death. everything about her current character stems from that specific moment and we’ve seen throughout the seasons how that’s progressed and shaped her into and i think because of that development, she’s pretty much the only character with a defined ending (career as a journalist)

mike has done like one thing wrong in the entire show and im so unbelievably tired of people acting like he’s the villain. he’s a 14 year old who doesn’t know how to perfectly express himself sometimes. people need to leave him alone

steve & robin and el & max have the two best friendships on the entire show and anyone who says otherwise is wrong

hopper should’ve stayed dead. his death was perfectly written in s3 and reviving him brought nothing to the plot. it wasn’t even explained how he survived, he was just there. it wasn’t well thought out or well written, and overall it just wasnt necessary. they ruined what was ultimately a beautiful send off (the speech to end s3) for a cheap plot twist that had no payoff.

(also i don’t like hopper because he gave brenner el’s location in s1, fully intending that he would kidnap her again. it’s unforgivable regardless of what his reasoning was and i hate that it was never brought up ever again)

going off of that, the entire russia plot is the worst written part of the whole show. it could be scrapped entirely from s4 and the season would lose nothing

stranger things is blatantly obvious about what ships are gonna end up together at the end of the show

jancy is just a truly terrible ship all around. jonathan hiding in a bush to take pictures of nancy through a window while she was taking her clothes off is soo unbelievably creepy and unforgivable, and it’s terrible that it was just dropped with no consequences whatsoever for him. he doesn’t even actually apologize! he says he shouldnt have taken the picture, but when she asks him why he took it in the next episode he says it was just a nice picture and then starts lecturing her about how she’s gonna end up miserable like her mom?? they should’ve never got together after all that. and then there’s all the bullshit in s3 when he undermined the misogyny she was facing at work and didn’t believe her at all which just further proves that they shouldn’t be together! and then she forgot he existed for most of s4 anyway

i want nancy to end the show single so bad

robin/vickie sucks lol. stranger things is probably the only show that has me rooting against the lesbian character ending up in a relationship. vickie is sooo boring and has absolutely no personality! even suzie’s random family members got personalities in s4! im tired of being told to accept the bare minimum just because a show is adding a random throwaway gay character. vickie serves no purpose in the plot and id rather not waste the extremely limited time left in the show developing robins relationship with a complete nobody when her friendships with pre-existing characters should be the focus. also every single one of their scenes featured steve in some capacity which was very annoying

steve and nancy actually have such an interesting dynamic as characters but specifically as exes. personally, i do not think they should get back together, but i think what makes them interesting is why they shouldn’t be together. obviously their first breakup is because of their different reactions to barbs death. their relationship was never going to make it past that. barb died because nancy brought her to steves house, she died AT steves house, and died while nancy was alone with steve. there was never any coming from back that, not while nancy hadn’t processed her grief and especially not when steve was trying to convince her to forget about it and go to a party. but they’ve both grown as people since then, and they’re still not going to work. steve wants a big family, nancy is career-oriented to the point that she will do anything to succeed as a journalist. nancy doesn’t want the suburban, nuclear family life. they are fundamentally mismatched when it comes to what they want in life and i think exploring THAT aspect of their dynamic is so much more interesting than just shoving them back together

overall the show is so much more enjoyable when you don’t care about ships <3 please disregard everything i just said about the ships <3 but seriously the main focus of the show is not even remotely centered on the romantic relationships and watching the show without really caring about that aspect of things is way better

this isn’t a hot take about the show but more the fandom: a lot of the dynamics do not exist at all in the show the way some people think they do. most obvious example is el and will, who both are wayyyy closer to at least 3 other characters than they are to each other. this isn’t just limited to stranger things, it happens in most shows, especially ones with a found family element (ex. agents of shield) but people tend to forget what the dynamics actually are and then project their opinions onto the characters

semi-related and not really a hot take but if i had to choose underrated/non-existent dynamics to explore in s5, i would choose: lucas and el (connection to max), nancy and el (both on the show since s1 but have barely spoken, both the only people to know vecna’s full backstory firsthand), and nancy and mike (siblings who both probably think they’re only children at this point because they never interact with each other)

also related to fandom but it’s so clear that so many people either have not watched the show or just don’t anything remember what happens in the show when they post shit. and that’s way there’s sooo much mischaracterization everywhere

this show has way too many characters and it’s resulted in a lot of them having nothing to do for entire seasons. look at the california group from this season. they spent the entirety of episodes 5-8 driving around in a van with nothing to do. even joyce, who was one of the main main characters in earlier seasons, felt like she was just kinda there this season. part of it is the way they divide the plots, especially geographically this season, but the other part is just not having anywhere near enough time or plot spaces for all the characters. it’s unfortunately probably only gonna get worse in s5 because they have to somehow wrap up every characters individual plot in addition to the greater shows plot

and my hottest take is that will is severely overhyped sorry. he’s just not that interesting of a character and i really don’t understand that obsession with him? i mean he’s a fine character and he hasn’t really done anything wrong but there are so many other characters that are actually involved in the plot that i find way more interesting, relevant, and better written. like he was barely in s1, s2 was more about things happening to him than him actually doing anything, and s3 and s4 he didn’t do anything. hopefully s5 will give him something interesting to do but for now i just don’t see it

Unpopular Opinion

Angela from Stranger Things is an asshole, but so was Billy. And we forgave him (most of us) for everything he has done, even tho he did some real messed up shit, JUST because he is pretty.

But so is Angela, like:

If we write fanfictions about Billy Hargrove, who literally tried running over a bunch of children with his Camaro for no reason at all, we should be able to 'forget' what Angela has done as well. Y'all be cheering on Eleven for attacking her with her skates and wish for her to die, and then you go on Tumblr, Wattpad, Ao3 or whatever, reading or writing kinky and fluffy stuff about an abusive prick that would not even glance at you twice and call you a slur for his own entertainment.

I mean yes, I read about him too once in a while, because he indeed IS pretty, and I like to forget peoples asshole personalities if they are fictional and good-looking! But if you do that, you should be able to do the same thing when it comes to Angela.

And if you can't, because 'he saved El 🥺' and shit, then YOU are the asshole. Doing something good once doesn't erase everything bad he has done in the past. Yes, he has trauma, but so do I and I don't abuse my little sister. Also maybe, just maybe Angela has something going on as well. Who knows! It's probably just because Angela is a girl and not a rebellious 'I can fix him 🥺👉🏻👈🏻' type of guy with a leather jacket and an attitude that makes me wanna kick in his teeth.

I mean yeah, bullying people is bad (obviously), but Billy has done things that are SO much worse than making fun of a girl that used the '😠🤚🏻' in public like a weirdo. (Honestly I cringed so hard, I am so sorry I love you El)

And there are fanfictions about him like there is sand at the beach. And most of those fanfictions are- *takes breath* oh wow so dirty. Like jug some holy water. (I am not religious but you know what I mean by that) And almost nobody cares, like people just ignore it.

But GOD forbid anyone says they like Angela or find her hot, because 'she made fun of El😠!' ...Oh and what about the episode where Billy tried to punch Steve to death? I mean, kick me if I'm wrong, but he didn't seem like planning to stop soon if Max hadn't stepped in. Steve would be dead.

And no, Billy x Steve would have never happened, like just clear your head and look at it. If somebody beat me up like Billy did it with Steve, I would run them over with a car, not try to fuck them or fall in love. Anyways.

Send me a Character

First impression

tbh the first time i knew about amity was when i already knew she was being a redeemed bully character with implied romantic feelings for luz since the show was a good few eps in at that point.

So i kinda thought "Oh, so it's like what they did with pacifica but they actually went through with the romance kinda".

Impression now

She's alright, i don't think i have as strong feelings about her character as other people do. I might be just as neutral on her as i was when i first knew about her, don't hate her, don't love her.

She's an alright character, cool to see her dynamic with luz onscreen, even if it kinda was put on fast forward in places.

Favorite moment

Her fight with hunter is pretty great.

Idea for a story

Au idea, but her being a emperor's guard alongside hunter and they work together as partners, her family drama still sticks around as her parents pressure her to stay in the coven and she and hunter's partnership and friendship has a lot of fun and interesting drama.

Unpopular opinion

Ok, so, i kinda have a few unpopular opinions regarding amity, so i'm just gonna lay them out real quick.

For one, i kinda don't think they fully handled her bullying willow situation well, while her arc mostly works, the way she treated willow before was SO awful and cruel and i just don't think the show fully had her apologize and reconcile for it. Her parents as far as we know did not make amity be a bully to willow like this so this is something amity did on her own terms, and yet never really seems properly address.

2, and this might be super unpopular, i kinda want amity to take a bit of a backseat moving forward. She's just been in so many episodes and takes so much spotlight away from other characters that i feel moving forward she should take a few more smaller roles so other characters who desperately need screen time and development get time to shine. (Even in episodes where other characters are SUPPOSED to get spotlight or SHOULD get spotlight, especially willow and gus, amity overshadows them in the end and it can start to feel frustrating even if the ep is good).

3, if hunter and amity had been given a fair duel at EL, hunter would've wiped the floor with her and i won't hear otherwise. If Amity could just barely beat him at his worst there is NO way she would have stopped him if he had been at his best.

4, I know ppl like lumity, but if i gotta have more episodes with amity in the focus i'd prefer more with other characters who aren't luz, like willow or even her siblings. Pretty much all of her episodes focus on their relationship and not enough on others and it'd be nice if time was taken into focusing on her other important ones without luz at all. Not that they're dating, maybe we can get more episodes of amity with other characters, s2 did slightly better in that regard.

5, i don't think she hates hunter as much as ppl think she does after EL, i think she's mad with him, which is fair enough. But she witnessed enough about hunter to probably understand he's not coming from a malicious place either and felt he had no choice. I think she'll be mad at him for a lil while because of the threat, but i don't think she'll hold as big of a grudge as ppl assume either

might have others i'm forgetting, i probably have more hot takes on amity then other characters because of how she's written and how the fandom can be with her.

Tbh her dynamic with hunter is so interesting i kinda hope we get to see them get along at some point in the future.

Favorite headcanon

I like the idea of her dying her hair different colors on the regular from now on.

So Many Fanfics So Little Time

This is just my list, I have seen so many (but if you want to use it it’s all yours too!). I’m not a writer. But I am a hell of a reader. Voracious one might argue. I just wanted to track my progress through the weeds of the absolutely never ending supply of Destiel and Cockles fanfic.

Read on if you want to see what I’ve read, and what I’ve thought. I am but one person with opinions - some of them may be unpopular - some of them you might agree with, but if you find something you haven’t read here, I encourage you to do so.

Honestly, this is just so I can track what I have read already, and when my friends ask, I can reference something easily. I have found some different fics on all kinds of ‘best of’ lists all over the interwebs. And I love recs - so rec away friends.

As someone who reads a solid 40 novels a year typically, I don’t come by the “I read a lot” innocently. I do actually read a LOT. When not reading fanfic (a new obsession, all things being fair), I usually read a lot of Fantasy/high fantasy, romance/erotica, and or YA (yeah, that was a bit of a ride no?). So from this one might digress that I like fluffy, cute stories, complicated and supernatural/paranormal type stories, and I sure do not shy away from violence or smut (or maybe violence with smut? *smirk*).

I have read all of these in the last 2-3 months (I will continue to add as I go). I had never read a fanfic until 2-3 months ago. A lot of these wonderful people are on here, and I mean you no offence by not directly tagging you - I’m still learning how to actually properly use this site. Links to AO3 are included (and I love you all).

These aren’t necessarily in any real order - I did read T&S first, followed by 91W, and 4LW...after that it’s just a shit show of Long or Short, Destiel or Cockles - smorgasbord. Some of these are the most popular Fics out there, and others I’ve never seen recc’d anywhere (just sort of accidentally happened upon them). So let’s get to it, shall we?

Twist and Shout - ok look. I understand the stigma associated with this one, but it was the FIRST one I read. It was the ball that shot me down the hill, and I haven’t stopped since. So. I loved it. I CRIED like a baby. SOBBED. It was not the quality of the writing but the way the story was developed and delivered. I have Never Cried Like This Reading a Story IN MY LIFE. It’s a rite of passage. Read It and have an opinion - it doesn’t need to be mine.

Ninety-One Whiskey - aka 91W, it is mentioned so much, and is SO worth the read. I continued my dive into the war fics (not typically my bag really and here I was reading 2 in a row). There are a couple of followup stories as well to this series (and yes, I’ve read them all). Although I’ll say that the original is my favourite. I often got lost in a bit of the War/Tactical descriptions, but would recommend it to anyone anyway. Ugh...the “stolen moments”...they were at the same time tragic and the most amazing things ever. You feel me? no? go read it.

Four Letter Word for Intercourse - aka 4LW. OMG just, OMG. I loved this story. I loved it so much. I think I read it in a day. Devoured it. It’s so HOT. Just read it. If you haven’t you’re missing out. LEMME AT IT. I loved “knowing the secret”, and had some major anxiety about that realization dawning (I had to take a breath, and be like, no, no, this is gonna be a mess, but it’s gonna be SO GOOD - I was not disappointed). HELLA LONG VILLANOS RANT PRO/CON

Anyone else tired of checking the villanos/villainous tag on here only to be met with unpopular opinions of it? Everyone has a right to their own opinion and on some things I agree. But HS, the criticisms boil down to a couple of things.

1. It wasn't what some people were expecting. Or rather it wasn't what they wanted it to be and are giving Alan and crew flack about it. (Its basically the WandaVision theorists upset that their predictions weren't canon)

2. Nitpicky stuff they dont like, like comparing characters' color tones from them and now, background shades, the insta story lines, parodying tik tok egirls, etc.

3. The misunderstanding of just how hard this project was hit to begin with, from it being made for CNLA (not even an American property, the fact that it got to be included in V&V and the CN Nexus special is huge for what they're working with), to not comprehending how economic situations are just flat out different in Mexico than in the U.S. and literally any job there is bound have something like that (even trying to explain they know better. They don't) not to mention the pandemic threw it all off schedule. The fact its still being worked on is a miracle at this point.

4. Ultimately it is a probs that they're just impatient at this point and just want to harshly criticize to distance themselves as publicly as they can and not set themselves up for disappointment.

This is not a hate post, in fact I'm just as impatient and agree on some points (particularly the length of time it takes and how the original crew was let go.) Theres a lot more stuff going on behind the scenes

But the two absolutely, most annoying things are the constant comparisons it gets to Vivziepop's works like they're a cut better in general or as proof that a series has to be like hers. To which can be easily argued that Helluva Boss is the equivalent of the Orientation videos. In which they're not the big BIG project, but a side thing meant to introduce the world at large for Villanos and Hazbin. I've seen people say that Villainous hasn't had any original footage which is total bs, because compiling all the shorts, pilot, crossovers, promotional material, secretive material, and the orientarion videos themselves clearly knock that point down.

And secondly that these criticisms have been used to turn speculations on the behind the scenes going ons into flat out lies, as if having parts of the story or even an idea of it and making it seem like the worst alternative is the only conclusion. There was an initial account, Nightfur I believe, that did the same thing except made themselves only making positive spins on the going ons which I admit is hella weird, but Petite is essentially doing the same thing on the opposite spectrum of it and honestly equally self righteous.

I'm not saying they don't have a right to their opinions, and to a certain extent, the fact that Petite's opinions are currently the what pops up most on the Villanos tag really speaks on the lack of Villainous content so on the time management she has point. I am just saying that she doesn't have to ruin it for everyone else with (my opinion) weak hot-take criticisms.

Honestly this rant comes from a place where I do enjoy what the series has so far. Not just in the personalities of the characters, but the comedy, the fact that its a Mexican made series (which one of this size has not existed on CN, idk what others they claim exist: El Tigre and Mucha Lucha were American Studio made), the little puzzles that can be deciphered in Spanish which I like that they were that way in the beginning but can accept its going to inevitably include English too. I like this phase of pre-series decoding and deciphering, and not having to full picture yet because I want to enjoy and learn about the lore in this story bit by bit. And many do to. Others don't like it thats fine and have every right to dislike the series and make their own conclusions on what happens behind the scenes.

The rest of us are just gonna keep vibin with clues, updates, and the existing content until the show drops. I have high hopes for it. I mean OTGW took a longer time to make and become what it ultimately ended up being and don't even get me started on the Gravity Falls and Steven Universe Hiatus'.

Other than that yea. This has been held in for a while but eh just had to vent and let it out. Feels better. Have a good one.

Slightly unpopular opinion/hot take: The Neverending Story at the end of season 3 wasn't a "totally random and playful 80s reference" it was actually the writers tipping their hand really, really hard in our general direction and giving fans a big clue about the story.

Of course , lol. You know I already talked about it a lot here. 😏

But they literally parallel el to atreyu “the false chosen one.” With atreyu falling and ending up on a beach of abandoned ruins , having a monster bite their leg, even the mirror scene. While the unassuming Bastian (poor kid with a single parent- aka Will) (who appears to be a normal human) has the power of imagination and is the only one who can actually defeat the evil once in for all. I’m going to elaborate on certain aspects of Never ending story in my s4 analysis- but I’d recommend reading the link. Also in my Will has powers video (at 13:33) i did a montage of the song to show the song was foreshadowing- it’s sinister (not random/happy).

I don't give a hot nor cold damn about Eleanor. But I do think she's a Larrie and I support that💁🏾‍♀️

But first, it's hilarious to me that she is so OBVIOUSLY, GENUINELY, SERIOUSLY, COMPLETELY a beard and people still make the time to bother her/expect things from her. If you're gonna bother that girl, show her some respect because she is doing a wonderful job... At being a horrible beard! 😂

Like... Girl never post about Louis, when she does it's old ass photos, she literally isn't doing ANYTHING not connected to Louis, and when she does it's usually linked to someone like her "ex-boyfriend "😂

Scratch that. Cause, I'll be honest, if I was a beard I would be the WORST/BEST beard E V E R. fullstop.

I would literally PUBLICLY DEDICATE a whole aesthetic insta just to taking pictures of beards 😂😂 I would start a thrift fashion line and my logo would legit be ... (You guessed it) A BEARD 🧔. I would comment on all my "boyfriend's" pics with a beard emoji! Needless to say, I'd probably be fired.

This was a rant. and all I'm saying is, could El be doing more? Sure. But, honestly what she's doing now is also passing in my Larrie book. So... I'm not pressed 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Idk if it’s an unpopular opinion hot take but here we go

This was certainly the weakest season in terms of character. Everyone started out at Point A and the only people that managed to move to Point B were Mike, El, Max, and I’ll say Robin. And even all that is like a big barely

The two big emotional moments just felt so cheap and unearned to me. Like one, because Hopper isn’t going to be dead. But he had what? Two scenes with El all season and then he was kind of just bumbling around like a big goof the rest of the time. Or fighting. And then we get that whole letter and I just. Idk. It felt cheap to me

And the stuff with Billy. Like maybe if he hadn’t been so awful last season then I’d be more willing to forgive him. Because the writers added the whole “Aww abusive dad” tidbit for us to be like aww he’s not all bad. I mean he was still racist and physically abusive but whatever I guess. There’s a big ol rug just waiting to have all that swept under it. And we knew nothing of him as a kid, nothing of his mother. Why choose that to focus on like it was already supposed to be some emotional payoff? Why not show something with Max? Like maybe they had one good time together before he turned into a major dickbag and that’s the happy memory he was holding onto. Because we know Max and we love Max and more importantly, she’s a character who was actually there!! He would’ve been much more connected to the main stuff

Idk like I guess they’re never going to recreate the magic from season one but this season was sooo lacking. The emotional punches just didn’t land like I wanted

And I already said how pissed I was about how Will and Lucas were treated. They literally could’ve just not been there and it wouldn’t have mattered. It was so bad that it seriously felt like it was parodying itself after a while.

I mean you know a season isn’t good when I’m over here thankful that we got freaking MILEVEN because at least that showed some character. Some growth and some normal interactions and some fucking human moments. I thought I would loathe Robin but she ended up being one of my favorite things about the season. Her scenes with Steve were great, even when they were on some scooby doo mystery shit the whole time

Honestly the season wasted so much time on a lot of silly stuff and I felt like the whole show was in a coma for most of the middle part. Like Steve and everyone felt like they spent the whole season in that elevator shaft/underground. And the stuff with the old lady went on way too long

Idk these are all just my gut reactions since I literally just finished it. I’ll rewatch it soon enough after everything has had a chance to sink in and process. But I really don’t know what else I can say about it

i dont mind the idea of mike and will getting together 2nd half of the season

i think if el is the main one to kill vecna/mindflayer/whatever then i think that's kinda dumb as her powers have never been shown to work as it all just keeps coming back and getting worse but if she is the main one to defeat vecna then i think she might loose her powers completely from the energy and possibly pass out for a bit (or die but i dont really think any character is dying) as her powers are connected to her physical state which is why her nose bleeds every time

hhhmmm the paladin and the cleric one has me pretty neutral tbh like y’all are gonna come at me for saying this but, idgaf abt ep names. Like yeah, they give us a bit of an insight of what could happen but then again, I think the Duffers are super sneaky and mischievous so the titles might just be them trolling us.

Byler getting together at the second half of the season is more important to me. Like I’d wouldn’t mind if during the previous part the Duffers had built them up. If they get together rushed and shit, I’d be a bit disappointed but beggars can’t be choosers, right? And at least we’d gotten byler endgame. Although I’d be mad as hell and would throw my TV out the fucking window tbh

and I’d hate that el is gonna be the one to kill Henry ngl. She has way to many screen time imo and other characters deserve to be fleshed out more. Like I get it she is one of the main ones but the og party has been practically forgotten in favor of el’s powers. Not even her personal development! Personally I’d like Henry’s death to be teamwork between all the party with Will and El showing their powers and twin dynamic.

Season 3 Review

TLDR; I’ve only watched it once so far. My opinions are relatively positive, but I did have this... weird feeling like something more was meant to happen but didn’t.

The Review:

Here’s the order I will go in. Plot review, and then character by character review. For the characters, I’ll try to put the shorter reviews on top. Don’t expect a perfect review, these are my free flowing thoughts.

Plot:

Plot was ok? I’m going over it in my head right now and there’s nothing in particular I didn’t like. Like last season, maybe they could’ve spent more time on other characters and relationships? Relationships that REALLY needed it? The flow of the story moved at a decent pace. I didn’t really feel like it was dragging at any parts.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but they just have way too many characters. When you have this many characters, you spread your story thin. It happens every single time. Why do writers never learn from this? The more you add, the more time you have to give them, time you don’t have?

But now it’s too late. Maybe some of these characters can fall back into the background? (Such as Robin, who I didn’t mind really)

As for how everything resolved, it was ok I suppose. The Mind Flayer? He was cunning, sure. But not nearly as cunning as the fandom dreamed him up to be, and I preferred the fandom interpretation. For a while we’ve all been predicting the Mind Flayer wouldn’t immediately go for El. He’d go for her friends and family, or Will’s friends and family, or Will again and then make it’s way to her. It’d make his beef with her very personal. Like take Mike. Or Hopper. Someone she’d least likely expect.

But no, it was taking random victims from town, or people El already didn’t like or know. (which by the way, I feel sorry for those poor people. Some were just children. Tsk)

Things could’ve gotten so much more cunning and creepy. Like they’d all be questioning if they’d been infiltrated by the MInd Flayer and someone in the Party wasn’t on their team or something. I dunno. Something.

As for how everything wrapped up, I don’t think Hopper is dead for one. Joyce was breaking down and assumed he was dead, but was she actually looking at his crispy body, or just an empty spot? If it’s empty, why do I feel like he escaped into the portal or hid somehow? Huh

And the very end?? As predicted, the Byers are moving away. I know before the season released the big theory was Will and El would be kidnapped, but after we got a still of Jonathan caressing Nancy’s face (they both looked to be crying), the shot of The Party biking away from the Byers empty house... I dunno. Something was off. Would Joyce still move if they were gone? I mean surely she would’ve stuck around Hopper to get help in finding their kids, and I highly doubt Hopper was gonna move anywhere.

I remember a very long time ago, Noah mentioned something about characters coming together, but not in the way he expected. And more recently, he said something happens at the end of season 3 that will give him and El more screen time next season.

This leads me to 2 conclusions. All that Byers fluff I wanted is next season... AND SO IS ALL THE EL AND WILL I WANTED.

But... I feel like there was so much opportunity to put some stuff in THIS season, you know? So, I’m kinda conflicted right now. I look forward to it next season, but I also feel it could’ve fit in this season 2.

CG looked good. Better than I was expecting. So good job folks. My biggest takeaway is simply too many characters. There just is.

So, onto the characters!

Characters

Erica: Very happy with how this turned out. We’ve already got black nerd rep with Lucas, but now his little sister too? So rare to see in media to be honest. It would be so cute if she joins The Party for DnD games. Not as a main maybe, but the person to go to for math.

Robin: You know, I’m glad it took the turn it did, with her being gay and all. I’m glad they aren’t trying to pair every single person under the sun. I think it’s good that Steve found someone that gets him, but that is truly just his friend that happens to be a girl. That said, I don’t know what there would be for her to do in future seasons, you know? Like, maybe she serves a role similar to Mr. Clarke where she can crack some code or something. But as a character? There’s no where for her to go, you know? And that’s not a bad thing! I think she can totally work as a supporting character. (though I feel conflict with that too. Cause she’s LGBT representation and we’re kinda imbalanced with the cast if you know what I mean)

Steve: I was fully expecting them to turn Steve into a complete goof and lean in too hard on the meme. They still kinda did, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. His doucher side still popped out now and then. Some scenes with Robin I liked (the bathroom discussion). Other times they spent WAY too much focus on his story (the “do you remember ms. Clicker” and “ooo the ceiling is wavy”). That said.... I feel like Steve’s character has also been mostly resolved? Where does his character go from here? Maybe he’ll get a girlfriend, but like Dustin’s girlfriend, I don’t find it necessary to focus on or anything. He’s got a friend his age now, still friends with Dustin. If there weren’t so many Steve fans, I feel like it’d be a natural progression to have Steve fall back a little too. (but I doubt that’s going to happen.)

Dustin: Dustin. Mmm. Dustin. I always feel like I have so little to say about Dustin. Not because I dislike him, but hey. We all have our favorites, right? I’m glad he took Erica under her wing and showed her it’s ok to be a nerd.... SD THAT HE BROTHER COULD’VE HAVE DONE THAT, but I digress I digress. Sometimes, your sibling isn’t the one to show you the way. It’s cool that he got a girlfriend I guess, so he actually wasn’t upset about Max and Lucas at all. He basically had similar feelings to Will, but less angry and intense. Was not interesting in the whole singing situation, but it was nice to have a comedic comeback with Lucas and Max teasing him.

Lucas: Lucas, my other son. He served the role I thought he would this season. The love doctor, trying his best to set his bestie on the right path. I mean, I guess his advice was sound, but El isn’t Max. His and Max more toned down relationship is how I feel like 14 year old romances should be. Teasing each other. Teasing mutual friends. Playing around. Hugs. They’re sweet. Wish we’d gotten more time of them talking about stuff going on though. I thought Max and Lucas would kinda work together to give their friends some space and give them time to think or something. Not Lucas actively working to get them back together and Max almost doing the opposite. I’m so happy that he was trying to apologize to Will about the dnd campaign. Will insisted he didn’t care anymore, but I bet he still appreciated Lucas bringing it up and saying it was a good campaign. What a good friend. So cute that they worked on the fireworks together. AND THE SEASON STAPLE HAPPENED, THEY HUGGED! YES. AND LUCAS WAS ACTION MAN, CUTTING EL FREE OF THE BEAST

Max: Max was definitely out of have fun this season. I’m glad she made a new bestie and they got along great. Though I do think Max could’ve approached the “you should be more independent” situation more gently (because El will take it all literally and do stuff word for word), it is what it is. The end result was positive. I’m glad Max called Mike out on being a little too controlling/protective, but you would’ve thought the others would’ve said something sooner? I guess Will tried but we all know how that went. Lucas poked fun at him, but didn’t really push for change. So, it’d make sense for Max to be the one to do it I guess. El had to make things change, not Mike. What I did not like this season was Max on multiple occasions trying to get through to Billy? We saw what their relationship was last season. Toxic as all hell. I’m sure Max wouldn’t want Billy to die or get morally wounded or involved in the supernatural shenanigans but... something was just off about everything. Mm.... like... she’s seen what Billy can do. Would she really doubt he did something bad that hard? It would have been nice if El had a “I need you to trust me.” line with Max like she did Mike. They’re both in their own way trying to dictate what El should be feeling (Max much less so, but still). Even if Max believed her, would’ve have changed much either way. Moving forward, where can her character go? Maybe some family stuff? Billy’s dead now. Where will Neil’s abuse go? Because, it’s clear he’s always just been a piece of shit.

Mike: Mike wasn’t as cruel as he could’ve potentially been, but he certainly was a little shit sometimes. His love and affection for El was clearly becoming an obsession. I’m glad he was basically forced to take a step back and had to try and work things out. El gave him virtually no pity or reward until she felt like he earned it. And the whole thing with Will? Ooof. What were you thinking Mike? Will obviously put a shit ton of work into his campaign and then you treated it like a joke the entire time and didn’t realize you were being a butt until Will finally had enough. Mike has always been very emotional and hot headed. He easily gets tunneled visioned too. But you know, despite liking girls and being with a girl, Mike Wheeler is still Mike Wheeler, a nerd who doesn’t know how to deal with girls really. I’m sure by the next time we see him, he’ll be much better.

Hopper: Hopper??? He was.... basically a dick the whole season. While I didn’t mind he was being the “leave enough room for jesus” trope he had going on, threatening Mike and making him lie to El was just.... what the heck are you doing Hopper? You’re really going to risk your relationship with El and Mike because you don’t like that they’re kissing so much? I get that you miss spending time with your brand new daughter, but I’m sure eventually all those butterflies would calm down and you could have your father and daughter times again. He should’ve swallowed his pride and did what Joyce said. And then Joyce? Omg Hopper please. She lots the man she was potentially going to marry and move away with less than a year ago. I know you’re horny, but please have a little class? I don’t hate Hopper, but man. He was WAY out of line sometimes. And I probably only feel this way because Joyce essentially told him “Screw you” multiple times. I can see why Joyce was hesitant to jump into a relationship with Hopper. He does share a few qualities of Lonnie. Don’t get me wrong, not NEARLY as toxic. But Joyce spend the whole season arguing with him like she did her ex husband. That can’t feel good, you know? Hopper needed to be better. He needed more time. Buttttt, unfortuntelyyyyy, time that could’ve been used for that.... wasn’t used for that. As for his death? To be honest, I won’t be convinced until I see a proper body. But just.... he was so considerate and patient last season with Joyce. What happened? Ooof

Joyce: Joyce. Best mom Joyce. I love her. Always have, always will. She did not take any shit this season from anyone. I can tell she was beyond pissed that Hopper was blowing off her concerns yet again. It was hilarious that she left him alone to yell into the void and was like, “No it’s ok. I’m just gonna borrow these and break into the facility without you.” I wanted soooo much moRE TIME WITH HER SONS. OR WITH EL. What are you doing Duffers? Then again.... when I really think about it, Joyce hasn’t had anything to do except worry about one of her sons in season 1 and season 2. It was a nice change of pace for her. She had her own adventure of sorts and that’s great. That said, I did love the .00002 second clip of her and Jonathan wiping his face. And I love that she was hugging Will so tightly that he actually said, “I’m suffocating.” I also liked that Will and Joyce cried in each other’s arms..... BUT WHAT THE HECK, SOMEONE GIVE EL A HUG PLEASE

Jonathan: I will say Jonathan’s nonchalance toward Nancy’s treatment did not feel quite like him, but I guess I understood his point of view after they were fired. Like, OBVIOUSLY he didn’t like Nancy’s treatment, but I guess the Byers financial situation has gotten so bad he just.... let that stuff slide (Joyce mentioned how Hopper was her first customer and she’s doing nothing but putting clearance labels on all their store products, so her job is definitely not safe) I’m glad we were granted not only the arguments, but also their apologies and whatnot. I feel like it’s in Jonathan’s nature to be skeptical until he’s proven utterly wrong. Not a bad trait to have, just makes him a wee bit hard headed. I was sorely missing Byers bro time. Omg there were so many opportunities to have them not just next to each other, but speaking and stuff? Or worrying about their mom? Or something? What is up with that? Ooof. They said this season was reminiscent of season 1, but I don’t see that at all. Even when Will wasn’t there for most of the season, the Byers still just... had so much???? going for them??? But now? There are no gifsets I can make this seasons of the bros basically. Or of Joyce and Jonathan. Like, nothing. And that’s a shame. (Just that scene of them driving in the car basically) Though, LET ME JUST SAY IT WAS SO BIG BROTHERLY THAT JONATHAN WAS TRYING TO HELP EL BUT WAS UNABLE TO CATCH THE WIGGLY CREATURE. AND TRYING TO PROTECT EL FROM THE WRIGGLY MOUTH TENTACLE. He’s so soft.

Nancy: Nancy had a lot to do this season and that’s great. I wonder now that the two hot dogs holding her back the most in the post are gone if she can finally shine and make a name for herself? Or maybe she’ll follow her mom’s advice and work for a different paper? I’m glad she stood up for herself and followed through with her investigation. Also, it was kinda cute that Mike called for her when the big beast was breaking through the ceiling

Karen: KAREN. I thought I was going to be really mad at you this season, but I’m glad you turned things around. Ted sucks, but he’s not a creep or abusive. If you want a new life Karen, then I hope you do it the proper way. Just divorce him or whatever. But you know what? Karen dragged his ass out to a crowded fair and he actually seemed to be enjoying himself so maybe he just needs a push in the right direction. As for the kids, omg. I’m glad Mike and Nancy finally came to her to cry and talk. Maybe they didn’t tell her everything, but at least they told her something? You know? And she had beautiful sound advice for Nancy. Karen is back in the graces of good moms again.

Will: WIll my boy. I know they said Will would be getting a break this season, but other than his friendships falling apart and feeling like the worst... to me, it was kinda odd how the Mind Flayer didn’t care about Will at all? Will is basically giving away all of the Mind Flayer’s secrets and he doesn’t care at all? Does he not know? Surely the all powerful Mind Flayer can tell... unless it’s not the Mind Flayer piece that’s giving Will this ability to sense him. Like, Will really has a sense evil ability I suppose. Which leads me to WIll’s power. I think this can be considered Will’s power, but I have a problem with the way they implemented it. Will sensed things sure, and could tell the Party if the monster was nearby or something. But... why have Will feel that so late? Wouldn’t this plot point be better implemented by Will feeling the Mind Flayer much much sooner? Or within people when they aren’t acting psycho with black veins? Why have Will say “Oh yeah, something bad is here.” When it’s obvious something bad is here. You know what I mean? I mean, technically he was feeling it before anyone else noticed anything, but not enough time to properly warn them. You know? Maybe this is a matter of practice makes perfect. He needs to work his new muscle to get a faster heads up. But yeah, my prediction in that way was right. His powers would be related to sensing or feeling. In some episodes, there were these various moments where I was sure Will was going to step forward and say something. Or offer El advice or comfort (like when she was diving deep and Flayed Billy was being mean, because he’s seen and felt some shit too), but it never happened. It always fell onto Mike to resolve. And I mean, that’s ok I guess. And typical of him to do so. I was also expecting more people to notice when Will was touching his neck and stuff, but Mike only noticed that one time in the movie and no one else paid attention. Also, it was weird that it took Will so long to notice Nancy and Jonathan’s struggle in the hospital. Side note, Will the Wise had me ROLLING. Will should join the drama club after all. He’s amazing. He should become an actor. On the topic of his sexuality, I have changed my mind on it. While before I was certain he was gay, now I think he’s either gay or aroace. Or both. To be honest, I’m not well versed on the subject, but whether he’s ace or not, I think he’s still gay. As for where his character is going? I hope his BRAND NEW SISTER EL can get him to chill on the “All girls are icky” routine. Pffff. My boy, you don’t gotta romantic like a girl to be friends ya know. Honestly, I can’t believe Will and El only really had 1 conversation on screen. That is BOOTY. P.S, I’m glad there wasn’t a love triangle. It would have been a mess. Lol

El: And nowwwww, to El! El dealt with a lot this season. I remembering mentioning to a friend that everyone demands Will get a break, but never mention El getting a break. She was basically tortured this season. I’ve discussed her a lot in Mike’s section, but to summarize, I’m glad she found her own form of independence this season. She was taking on a little too much Max (like she was with Kali. And before that, Mike), but by the end, you could clearly see she really coming into her own. A little mix of everything with her own self coming through. Now, onto her powers. So, they’ve changed how they work a little. Apparently, El decides who can and can’t see her in the void. That means, the ONLY people who have broken this rule is her mother and Flayed Billy. That whole thing with Will? That’s because she wanted him to hear her at the very least. And also, apparently anyone can talk to El while she’s in that place because she heard Mike like she heard Joyce in season 1. Also, that power to dive into memories wasn’t Terry’s power. Or rather, that’s yet another power El has that her mother has too. At this point, it kinda feels like they’re just piling any ability onto El that fits what they’re trying to do with the plot. It is an interesting choice that she’s lost them for now, but I wonder why exactly. You can still hear when she’s using her power, but nothing happens. Now El can really be a “normal” girl until they reappear (which they’re bound to do). Also, IT IS SO SO AMAZING THAT JOYCE TOOK HER IN AND NOW iT’S A FAMILY OF 4 AND JOYCE IS LEGIT HER MOM OMG. EL HAS A MOM!!! (Ok, she’s always had a mom. But you know what I mean) She’s now living in a house with more people. And although Joyce is a very clingy paranoid parent, she is not clingy and paranoid like Hopper. If there’s a problem, she properly address it with her kids. I think El will really like this new take on family with Joyce.

Other:

Was SO happy to see Bob. I’m glad his memory is alive. Would’ve liked to see Will think about him, but I guess Will had another things going on. Still. Would’ve been nice. Very nice. Also glad to see Dr. Owens for a split second. You know, I really liked that Alexei guy. He turned out to be kinda adorable and was really trying to help. It’s so sad what happened to him honestly. Didn’t care for trying to make Billy sympathetic, but I guess if you’re going to kill him off, you should better understand why he’s suck a dick. I guess. And, it’s quite sad all those people disintegrated into poo. I feel like I already said this.

Conclusion

Although my feelings have not completely settled, there is one thing that’s clear. I still prefer season 1 and 2. I basically feel like everything I expected to happen this season is actually going to be next season. It’s a weird feeling to have. Makes me feel uncertain. Should I really be looking forward to the promised next season when I felt like this one surely could’ve had more? Know what I mean?

I want to say I should definitely be getting what I want next season. But... I wish it were this season.

As for what’s coming next, well, obviously the Russians are dumb and they opened a gate. And they have an American prisoner. But anyway, I wonder what the Mind Flayer/Demogorgon is going to do next. Track down El? Mmm.... and I guess the US government right now must not be a threat whatsoever. Not with Owens in charge. Mm. El faced no backlash being seen by all those government goons.

My Top 15 Bosses in Games

Bosses are fun and great, most of the time. And often, they can make or break a game for me, which means my favourite games often have the most entertaining, impactful boss battles with high emotional stakes or just pure spectacle. Because I couldn’t pick just 10, here’s my top 15 bosses that really left a mark on me. Enjoy!

This list is probably gonna be a little weird, because it’s purely my opinion. Also, spoilers below for all the games I mention.

15. Donkey Kong (Super Mario Odyssey)

Admittedly, this is stretching the definition of the term ‘boss’, but if DK from back in the 80s can be counted as a boss, then so can this. For me, this was the best moment in all of Odyssey, which in itself seemed to be a love letter to the legacy of both 2D and 3D Mario. This retro throwback, complete with the classic 2D run-and-jump platforming from the original Donkey Kong, is amazing with the huge Metro Kingdom festival in the background and the soaring Jump Up, Superstar accompanying it. This seamless marrying of old and new proved to be my favourite part of this game, and made Odyssey one of my favourite platformers in general.

14. Void Termina (Kirby Star Allies)

I know this is a really unpopular opinion, but I personally loved Kirby Star Allies for a lot of reasons. I loved the graphics, the characters, the smooth, simple and fun gameplay, how polished and unique each section of the game was, not least the huge space section at the game’s conclusion and of course the free updates adding a wealth of new content and characters. And at the very end, you take on this thing, Void Termina, in a massive space arena. Above everything else, this is just dizzy, colourful fun and is a great culmination of everything the game’s been building up to since the first level. You spend the fight switching between firing wildly at Void Termina from your rainbow ship thing and fighting parts of the monster from the inside. As I’ve said, this made for a satisfying conclusion to an amazing platformer for me and more than earns its spot on my list.

13. Mirelurk Queen (Fallout 4)

I remember the pure shock I felt for a hot second the moment the Mirelurk Queen decided to rear its head for the first time. For the record, I’m talking specifically about the Queen that shows up when taking the Castle for the Minutemen. Seeing this hulking thing looming even above the castle walls is something that genuinely intimidated me, especially as early into my playthrough as I was, and it took a lot of my supplies (and a lot of attempts) to finally pump enough bullets into it to kill it. The frantic panic of sprinting around the ruins of the Castle trying to avoid the giant Mirelurk’s blasts of acid and keeping enough distance to stay safe balanced a good amount of difficulty with spectacle and stayed with me long after I put the game down.

12. Griffin (The Witcher III: Wild Hunt)

I’ve made it clear on my blog before that I didn’t have a standout experience with The Witcher III as a whole, but to say it didn’t have some spectacular moments is pretty much an insult. In particular, Geralt’s first throwdown with the massive griffin terrorising White Orchard was a brilliantly intense and strategic fight that greatly utilised the game’s smooth combat system and made full use of Geralt’s many abilities. I find that the game really shone most of all while in combat, maintaining a great level of intensity with balanced difficulty and a soaring soundtrack that always makes the battle experience even more memorable. Plus, look how awesome this thing looks.

11. El Luchador (Rayman Legends)

The end boss of a world in my favourite platformer of all time based entirely on the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead, this particular boss fight encapsulates everything I adore about this game. Fun, tight platforming, colourful and memorable design, a great soundtrack and controls that function perfectly. You spend this boss fight finding new and creative ways to bounce on this giant wrestler’s head in front of an audience of cheering skeletons as the manic soundtrack intensifies with each round of the fight. This fight, and this entire game, combines fun and creativity masterfully and I’d urge basically anyone to play it.

10. The Archdemon (Dragon Age: Origins)

Part of what makes the climactic battle with the Archdemon so memorable is how perfectly the game pulls off the intense build-up that lasts the entire plot and then still delivers an epic payoff. The Archdemon is almost straight away set up as a genuine threat that looms over everything you do in Origins and the success of your eventual showdown with the Archdemon is based entirely on your strategies and choices throughout the game. Who you manage to recruit, what races you have fighting on your side and, most importantly, which companions you take with you into the finale will all have a huge impact on your fight. And oh boy, the Archdemon is just as hulking and terrifying when you finally get to take him on. This fight is probably the most universally recognised great on my list and still stands out as one of the best RPG finales to date.

9. Marguerite (Resident Evil VII: Biohazard)

Resident Evil 7 is a truly terrifying, if fairly brief, foray into horror that Capcom haven’t quite managed since the series’ fourth entry. And I felt that the main fight with the Baker family’s deranged mother Marguerite deserves a place on this list for the raw terror it creates alone. Just when you think you’re getting used to the horrors of the Baker estate, the game ushers you into a claustrophobic greenhouse and locks the door behind you. After a jumpscare that will make you lose your shit, you’ve got to somehow dispatch this horrifying, unhinged bug woman who’s screaming obscenities and crawling on the walls and ceilings to pounce on you and spawning endless poisonous insects from the weird egg sac between her legs. As if that wasn’t awful enough, most of the time, you don’t even know where the hell she is, as she has a rather unsavory habit of crawling off into little alcoves and into walls, out of your sight, so you’re forced to frantically search around in the darkness in an attempt to spot her before she jumps on you. No other boss fight has elicited this kind of fear from me, so on that merit alone, it’s earned its spot.

8. Daud (Dishonored)

The climactic clash with the man that killed your character’s love interest, the empress, and was directly involved in framing you for her murder is just as brilliantly satisfying as you’d expect. For the first time in the game, the protector turned assassin Corvo is finally forced to take on someone who can wield the same supernatural powers he can, which makes a battle with high emotional stakes that really allows you to see the glaring similarities between Corvo and Daud. On top of this, with Daud being voiced by Michael Madsen, his provocative, yet thoughtful dialogue throughout the battle makes you think while you fight and gives you a much deeper insight into Daud’s character and helps you decide whether you’ll choose to show him mercy or not, especially during his eloquent plea for mercy at the fight’s end. As for the fight itself, it’s fast-paced and intense, while encouraging you to make full use of Corvo’s arsenal of weapons and powers to beat him back. But most impressive is the sheer difference in experience depending on whether you’ve chosen the path of merciful low chaos or murderous high chaos throughout the game, with Daud in low chaos being much more willing to offer a fair fight rather than sending his goons out after you. In a game full of changes to the world and story depending on your choices, some huge and some extremely subtle, this fight with the empress’ assassin is a truly standout moment in a brilliant game. Oh, and if you end up playing the DLCs where you take control of Daud, another emotional layer is added when you realise just how much Daud has done to save the empress’ daughter, even when on the surface he seems to be just another of Dishonored’s many despicable villains.

7. Stained Glass Demon (MediEvil: Resurrection)

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge MediEvil fan, specifically the oddly maligned PSP version that I personally think is amazing. For me, this charmingly gothic action platformer has a hell of a lot of high points, but the fight early on the game with the Stained Glass Demon in particular is as cool as it sounds. The game totally embraces its gothic atmosphere in this section, with the protagonist Sir Daniel Fortesque being trapped within a textbook creepy mausoleum full of undead things, and something in the giant stained glass window that seems to be very alive. Eventually fighting this thing really tests you on what you’ve learned up to this point, meaning that full use of the weapons you’ve gathered is basically essential if you want to beat this weird demon that uses glass as its main attack. By merit of how uniquely amazing this boss fight is, as well as the game it hails from, this particular demon is one of my absolute favourite boss fights.

6. David (The Last of Us)

While this isn’t a boss fight in the traditional sense, it is a gritty, tense face off with the game’s only real central villain. You play as the hardened but still terrified Ellie as you carefully navigate a restaurant while David searches for you with very murderous intent, his monologues only serving to make the experience even more chilling. With each strategic hit you manage to land, David becomes more and more enraged, searching the restaurant with more fervor with each hit you deal, eventually setting the building on fire. The tension that’s been building through the whole encounter reaches boiling point as you watch the fire slowly begin to envelop the whole room and Ellie finally catches him offguard long enough to brutally kill the deranged man with his own machete. Everybody knows how amazing this game is, and this unorthodox fight in particular stood out as a great character display and a masterclass in building tension, to only then be immediately followed by Joel and Ellie’s emotional reunion that definitely tugs at your emotions. The Last of Us has always been a must-play and this moment serves as one of many reminders that it definitely still is.

5. Xaldin (Kingdom Hearts II)

Probably the hardest boss fight on this list and also that I’ve ever had to do in general (yes that means I’ve never played Dark Souls), I initially wrote this whole fight off as total bullshit, as I figured there was no way outside of blind luck to finish this with any sort of skill. And admittedly, luck is a factor here, with Xaldin’s constant and dizzying attacks taking a hell of a long time to work out the patterns for than most other fights in the game. He’s pretty much constantly in your face, knocking off huge chunks of your health bar in one go, so it quickly becomes a mad dash for survival as you run around the castle courtyard trying desperately to find an opening. One thing I’ve always loved about Kingdom Hearts, despite how needlessly complicated most of its entire concept is, is the consistently smooth, fun combat system, that allows for many different styles of play and rewards experimentation with different abilities and magic. Nowhere does this come out more in one of the game’s many creative boss fights, most notably for me the clash with this particular member of Organization 13.

4. Morag (Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies)

This is probably my weirdest pick on the list, as in reality Morag is a fairly inconsequential boss fight in a game that most people regard as one of the worst in the Dragon Quest series. But DQ9 is one of my absolute favourite games of all time, and this boss fight in particular is tied to one of the most emotionally charged storylines I’ve experienced in an RPG. Towards the start of the game, you’re tasked with killing the Wight Knight, a supposedly evil knight that’s been terrorising a local town, specifically the town’s princess. Upon beating him, you discover that he was cursed by the witch Morag to remain with her in the ruined town of Brigadoom after falling in love with him. The princess that the knight had fallen for died in the intervening 500 years, leading his grief to cloud his judgment and he began to pursue the princess of a different town that looked almost exactly like her. In order to put his spirit to rest, the princess of the town realises who and what the knight is, and comes to Brigadoom to give him the dance he never got to have with the woman he knew 500 years ago. Okay, might be a little cliche, but this really oofed me and I thought this whole plotline was brilliantly executed, much like every other emotional moment that this game is packed with. As a whole, this boss fight, while inconsequential, is intrinsically linked to a heavily emotional subplot and is a hidden gem in an often overlooked, but amazing RPG.

3. Goro Akechi (Persona 5)

I almost gave this spot to the ever satisfying takedown of Kamoshida, but this fight just beats him out for pure emotional stakes alone. Goro Akechi is a tragic character who was horribly mistreated throughout much of his life, but at some point in his life, he made a conscious choice to become what he was. While the phantom thieves sympathise with his plight and the people that aided in him becoming the murderer that he was, they know they can’t get through to him and their only choice is to fight him off. The boss fight itself is suitably epic, with the now clearly unhinged Akechi throwing his full might at your party, but there’s still a part of you that doesn’t want to keep fighting. And that’s what makes this whole section so interesting, as your main character begins to understand that Akechi in reality is a twisted reflection of the thieves and what they could very easily become should they lose their way. And Akechi’s eventual realisation that this is the case then prompts him to make the ultimate sacrifice in the end, as his loyalties waver when he realises his father never planned to keep him around anyway. There’s a lot to unpack in this particular fight and has a lot more emotional layering to it than most other fights in the game, and it’s very rare to say that about any boss fight. Persona 5 is a spectacular experience from start to end and the effect Akechi’s final stand had was one of its most memorable moments.

2. Asriel Dreemurr (Undertale)

A once underrated indie gem that has since basically become a gaming icon in the years since, how much I absolutely love Undertale still hasn’t wavered. And in a game with a wonderfully creative combat system and therefore full of great bosses, the pacifist route’s final fight takes the crown for me. It’s the perfect culmination of everything you’ve experienced throughout Undertale, giving you a brilliant soundtrack and the opportunity to save each and everyone of the friends you’ve made along the way, followed by Asriel himself. The story of Asriel and the first human who fell into the underground is a deeply tragic one, and Asriel himself is a character stricken with grief that has distorted into anger and an obsessive desire to wield godlike power and all of this combines to make you really feel for who you’re fighting, which makes it all the more satisfying to help him come to his senses at the very end. This incredibly intense, but endlessly satisfying battle ends off with an emotional sequence of the real Asriel realising the hate in his actions and redeeming his actions by opening the barrier while he’s still himself to let monsters go free. This ending gets me everytime and there’s some wonderful themes buried in here somewhere, so the significance of this particular character and his final showdown can’t be understated.

1. Calamity Ganon/Dark Beast Ganon (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)

It probably stands to reason that my favourite boss fight came out of my favourite game. Much like the rest of Breath of the Wild, this finale left a huge impact on me and I absolutely adored all of it. After fighting your way through the ruined Hyrule Castle (which, as a sidenote, is also awesome), you finally see the horrible monstrosity you’ve been building up to fighting for the entire game and it looks as freaky as it should. Before the fight kicks off, each champion you’ve rescued makes a cameo to help you out and then, you’ve got to fend for yourself. This spectacular boss fight does everything a boss should do; it tests you on everything you’ve learned and gathered throughout the entire game, maintains a great level of emotional stakes and, most importantly, gives you a fitting finale to arguably the best adventure game ever made. Everything is topped off with a horseback battle with a giant creature form of Ganon that covers the whole of Hyrule Field (which at that point, honestly does intimidate you) in one final push to seal Ganon away. You truly feel that this is what your grand adventure has been leading up to and the sense of genuine accomplishment you feel when Ganon falls and Link finally reunites with Zelda in real life after spending all this time regaining his treasured memories of her combines that sense of accomplishment with vast emotional depth. Everything about Breath of the Wild absolutely blew me away and this wonderful ending really could not have been better. The long awaited final battle against Ganon, after experiencing everything that happened to Link and the champions after losing so tragically to Ganon a century ago, as well as the brilliantly handled subtle romance between Link and Zelda, makes this my absolute favourite boss fight, and game ending in general, of all time.

7. Ho fatto un casino

It’s been almost a week but here I am, back with my thoughts on episode 7 of the 1st season of Skam Italia. I talk about being calm and cool and chill, about toxic masculinity and the parallelisms between Silvia and Eva. The results for the Bechdel test for this episode are at the end as usual. Enjoy!

the episode starts on the most lovely note: the girls, alone, having a conversation about about a really interesting, engaging and thought-provoking topic *drumroll* the Villa guys. Yay.

the silence of the girlsquad while Silvia talk about Formentera, the perplexed stares

Eleonora is holding back from commenting so hard! Her “What are you doing with that sandwich?” is a bit judge-y, sure, but not as judge-y as the instinctive “What are doing destroying that poor sandwich?” I would have gone for

that fake nonchalance from Silvia! She’s being low maintenance! She doesn’t need to talk, it’s cool that the guy she likes made out with another girl, it’s fine! She didn’t take it badly, “ti pare”?

IDK why but I love Ele looking back towards Eva to look for confirmation and support when Silvia seems not to know what she’s talking about

Silvia is cool as a cucumber and just casually piling on justification upon justification and diverting the conversation as far from Edoardo as possible

she’s so casual!!! She made out with someone while she was so drunk she can’t even remember who it was and it’s whatever!! Chill!!!

and to continue the streak of super casual, nonchalant people, here’s Eva asking about Federico, just out of innocent curiosity, you know

that thank you kiss (that goes on for nearly 20 seconds) is completely chill as well

Gio: promises Eva 2am crepes also Gio: actually only ever brings Eva coffee from a vending machine that he only got because the machine ate his money in the first place

Eva casually asking Gio where he is going with his friends, despite complaining a lot in previous episodes about said friends and the person Gio becomes when he’s with them: not out of character at all, Gio won’t notice anything! She’s suave!

cue Gio noticing, but being too kiss drunk and letting himself be convinced (and oh how the tables have turned! This is some mild gaslighting from Eva!)

super casual, super smooth public declarations of love

and then Federica, cool as anything, asking about Marti’s relationship status

this clip was titled “Il panico” and I love this title so much. I would have gone for something like “And everyone was chill” but this antiphrasis-cum-Silvia-quote is pretty good too

going back a second, Marti’s face while Gio and Eva kiss! He’s awkward and avoiding looking at them exactly like the other girls, but there’s so much annoyance there too! We’ve already seen him break up at least one of their kisses (first clip with the “A zozzoni!”) and I bet he’d totally pull an Ammucchiate!Niccolò here if he thought he could get away with it

that pool is a really cool place, I really want Marti to take Nico there at some point cause it fits his aesthetic for romantic places perfectly

how smooth, how suave of Gio to lose control of his skateboard and end up falling on his ass in the mud

Marti’s hair! It’s tremendous! Baby, cut it please, I’m begging you (AND I KNOW THIS IS AN UNPOPULAR OPINION OK but you can’t deny he needs a bit of order on that head)

M: “I see things are going better” E: “Yeah, [...] everything is fine” COOL AS CUCUMBERS, the both of them. The fake nonchalance. The facade of chill.

then Eva swallows, takes a deep breath and it all comes crashing down

Eva is 100% talking to Marti instead of one of the girls because they would obviously tell her off for listening to a dumb boy’s advice and she’s scared they would turn on her for “making” another boy cheat like it happened with Laura over Gio, when in reality the girls would/will take her side both with the Federico/Alice situation and the Giovanni situation; on the other hand, she is convinced from their previous conversation Marti is on her side, she’s looking for validation of what she did when she took his advice despite feeling stupid for taking it herself, but she also wants someone who will tell her off for cheating on Gio, who maybe will fight her about it cause it’ll be cathartic, so Marti is the obvious choice of confidant here

and Marti is taken aback: I don’t think he expected Eva to actually go to Laura, Laura to actually tell the truth and most of all to cause such an earthquake with a half-assed line about going to the source

is Marti that concerned about Federica that he really thinks of her first when Eva tells him about kissing “Fede” or is he that unaware of what Eva’s social life has looked in the past few months and of the hierarchy at school? Both, I suspect. He’s a disaster.

“Hai capito” he’s so shook! He doesn’t know how to react! His mind starts going a million miles an hour

and again! He’s Gio’s best friend, he’d put himself in front of a bullet for Gio, but he makes it sound like he’s siding with Eva, like he’s giving advice based on what’s best for her and Eva believes him without a second thought! I just can’t with these kids. She even thanks him!

the shots focused on Gio skateboarding down in the pool are from both Eva and Marti’s point of view not only in the sense that they come from their position, where they’re sitting close to one another, but because they both see him in the same way: boyfriend material

what’s Silvia doing wearing that ugly jacket?? I mean she looks great anyways, but it’s so ugly and plasticky and it doesn’t compliment her figure at all??

and oh, this poor baby. She’s been so brainwashed into believing a) that she needs a man; b) that her self-worth lies in the social status of the man she’ll get herself; c) that men treating women like shit is par for the course and a sign they actually like them, they’re just being manly she just. Doesn’t. Get. It. Her first thought when Eva asks about Federico is that she likes him, not that she likes gossip, or that she needs blackmail to get rid of the guy who we know and the girls know has been hitting on her, despite knowing she has a boyfriend (which would have been my first thought tbh). She thinks that Edo’s silence is jealousy and she’s absolutely devastated when she finds out about the lows teenage boys can get to when it comes to status, sex and proving their masculinity

Eva and Silvia’s clothes have similar colors in this clip, but inverted (pink shirt and blue jacket for Silvia, blue t-shirt and red-purple shirt over it for Eva) which I think is significant: everyone knows Silvia’s been with Edo because she’s advertised it to be more popular, while Eva’s doing her best to prevent her story of her kiss with Fede from coming out, so the colors are inverted; at the same time, they are part of the same color families because Silvia and Eva have both “been” with one of the Villa boys and therefore they’re both on that wall and in both their cases there’s a third guy involved (Gio and Rocco Martucci); Eleonora on the other hand is in black, neutral.

and Ele calls the wall “posto di merda” and I couldn’t agree more: it is a sanctuary of sexism and misogyny, a place specifically created to celebrate the guys’ sexuality, while demeaning and ridiculing girls for theirs, along of course with other, “lesser” boys who are not in their circle and don’t have as much sex (in the Villa guys’ perception) as them or don’t get girls as hot as theirs: it’s obviously the new frontier of a classic of toxic masculinity, comparing dick sizes, with a dash more misogyny thrown in for good measure, and it’s public in a way notches on the bedframe (another great toxic masculinity classic) aren’t, since those are a twisted way of demonstrating how good you are in bed to women along with how you’re a casanova not looking for anything serious, the wall is a self-congratulatory group activity for the elite, accessible to anyone in theory, but unknown to most people; the only thing I have to say that’s even just vaguely positive about the wall compared to the Penetrators sweatshirts in the OG is that it’s less about “possession” of the girls, who are still objectified, but are not marked in an outward way to indicate they “belong” to a specific group or a specific member of the group

EVA, GUARDAMI EVA: why the fuck would you call him? You already know he won’t take you seriously, he’s never taken you seriously while talking to you face to face, why would he be any better on the phone!

Eva just really doesn’t know how to lie. She’s shit at it, with anybody. The only secrets she manages to keep are those who only require her to omit the truth without having to make up excuses: the only lie we see her successfully tell is about spending Easter with Sara and Laura, while was with Gio, and even then she kind of betrays herself later when she tells her mom her and Laura haven’t been talking much since they were put in different classes

I’ve been disproved! She successfully pretends Fede is her mom on the phone right then. Whoops.

cue Federico disregarding Eva’s requests and instructions because he’s a self-centered, sexually objectifying ass as usual and calling her and making fun of her

I don’t have much to say about the conversation between Gio and Eva on the couch, except that Gio is obviously avoiding the words “drug” and “marijuana” because he wants to ignore the potential addiction he has shown he could develop, that conversation in which people disagree on something important but them man distracts the woman by being silly always make me uncomfortable cause I feel he thinks her thoughts are valid and that Eva must be feeling so shit when Gio tells her he’s decided to tell her everything and never lie AND IT’S BECAUSE OF MARTI who told her not to communicate with Gio

so much sarcasm in that conversation at Baretto

Sana’s first response to Silvia, who treated her like shit and was racist towards her, is to repay her in brutal honesty, and it’s honestly cruel sometimes, but genius cause what can Silvia do or answer?

“Sticazzi degli altri” and this moment is so important! Everything the girls have been trying to teach Silvia in the past few months about self worth, confidence, about not giving too much weight to other people’s opinions and about feminism coagulates in this single moment for Silvia: she couldn’t be low-maintenance enough for Edoardo to keep her? Fine, now she’s gonna be fucking high maintenance and loud and proud and hand him his ass.

except it’s all facade, she’s still a scared, naive girl who’s a bit of a pushover inside, so when she actually confronts her monster she caves immediately when the interaction doesn’t play out as she envisioned, and in the end she comes out of it destroyed and with the idea that being confident, proud etc. is only harmful for her social status

Silvia can’t even get Edo to listen at her! Not until one of the other girls arrives and calls him out

that “Ciao!” is the epitome of the fake confidence Silvia’s portraying, she’s trying to be cool and suave and destroy him like Ele or Sana would (and will)

and what an haphazard, unthreatening group the girlsquad looks when compared to the Villa guys, all in black, far taller, forming a more compact front, arms on shoulders, exchanging looks behind Edo

“If you think you can reduce me to an X on a wall” that would be bad enough! But even worse, Silvia is not even an X, she’s not even on Edo’s radar enough for him to know her name, despite her giving him her first time!

Silvia is a cautionary tale for teaching girls about consent too, both because of how she handled the sex with Edo and making out with Martucci, and conversely because despite all the signals and implied messages from Edo telling her no, that he’s not interested in her, she still continues to go after him

and like, I said before that I got why Edoardo is doing this, but he’s such an ASSHOLE about it, I wanna punch him in the face so bad

he throws her off straight away, pretending he doesn’t know what she’s talking about (Silvia should have predicted that, really, as I said before, it’s an ELITE thing, not many people are supposed to know about it so why would Edo acknowledge that something exists, that he knows anything about it and that it’s a secret Silvia has been allowed into too?

then he interrupts her! And I don’t think I need to say anything more about manterrupting than what has already been said

Silvia is completely frozen. This is the man of her dreams. She had sex with him. Only a little over a week earlier. The entire world crashes down on her. He doesn’t seem to remember her at all.

and after confusing her, breaking her heart, disproving her theory, treating her like a child and humiliating her, Edo just has to dig a bit deeper still and mock her

re: Ele’s roast, I’m just gonna 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

the girls though: while Edo is talking to Silvia, Sana and Ele are simmering with barely contained rage, while Fede is as chided as Silvia is and Eva is worried about Silvia, but also about Federico, I bet she was checking what he was doing out of the corner of her eye for the whole conversation; then when Ele talks, and afterwards, while they leave, their bearing completely changes, they stand up straighter, their chins are high and they leave with nonchalance and an air of superiority

Giovanni complaining about not answering perfectly a particularly hard question he was asked in a test is such a classico mood though

Eva is so cute, being worried for Silvia and checking in on her

Alice has anger management issues obviously, but I stan Mr Boccia’s female colleague who is an impressive example of female solidarity and teaching the right messages, even if her methods are not very conventional of pedagogically great; basically the whole PE department in this school is 💯

and then there’s the fight: Alice arrives with a group of friends, like a proper ambush; I love killer Sana with the dictionary, that poor girls on the other end of things will have some very nasty bruises; all the girls get in the fray, even Silvia and they form a shield behind which they hide Eva

Ele is super interesting to me here: she’s in proper boxer stance, like she knows how to fight, and she probably does, doesn’t she? What with being a beautiful girl in a big city in a sexist world and what with Filippo being her brother and gay and flamboyant and probably getting bullied when they were both younger. On top of this, as soon as Alice calls Eva “troia” she gets mad as a hornet ‘cause she just can’t stand people who use the derogatory terms that condemn women simply on the basis of how much sex they’ve had and stigmatize sex workers, especially when it’s women against other women (see also ep.1 with Laura calling Eva “puttana”)

and after that, much as she won’t believe it, Silvia’s moment with Edoardo is forgotten; more importantly, though, Alice and Federico’s fight during PE is forgotten, as is the fact that this situation is his fault since he cheated; no, the thing that lasts in people’s mind is the catfight between girls outside the school gate and how that redhead from 3B is a whore

Bechdel test: this episode doesn’t pass the Bechdel test. I’ve thought quite a bit about it, because there are technically two conversation that pass the test: one while the girls are at Baretto, in which they talk about Fede’s pink wedge shoes, but I decided not to count it just like I didn’t count the conversation on the windowsill about Margot in the last episode, cause it fades in and the topic changes after just a few seconds; the other immediately follows and it consists of Silvia telling the others she got 7 in Maths and that she found the ananas cake on a website: I decided not to count this one because it almost completely one-sided and Silvia starts talking about Edoardo the very next minute.

Choosing Sides || Marco Asensio Imagine

Note: Hi guys!!! Look who is back by unpopular demand! I finished college so my life should be a little bit easier now and I’ll be able to work on requests more often. So yes, I’m slowly but surely working on them. I hope the nonnie who requested this likes it and I hope you all do too because I had fun writing this. Feedback is encourages so let me know what you all think!

In your change of life because of a relationship you had to get used to having two roles. One, being the supporter of your boyfriend Marco. Two, being the supporter and biggest fan of your favorite club FC Barcelona. It was all a contradiction and if it was confusing for anyone, people wouldn’t like to know how was it in your head and your life. Marco was…accepting of it, kind of. Through gritted teeth he was okay with it when you two were talking before being anything four months ago, but he somehow found it in him to accept it. For you it was no different, being a Culé in heart and soul like you were Real Madrid was the biggest no no. The enemies of enemies. It was the point where if you liked football, you had to choose between two faiths. Barça or Madrid. There was no way you could support both teams. You didn’t support the team as a whole of course. Yeah, you spoke with all of them and were good friends, but it didn’t meant that you liked the team. You managed to separate the players from the individuals. Cause you got along quite well with Ramos, you had your opinions of him as a player in your Culé point of view, but it didn’t stop you from liking him. Marco was…different from the rest in a way. He supported his club and loved it, but wasn’t as problematic as the others. At least that’s how he was before your eyes. “You know, I was going to play for Barça” he said when he found out you were a supporter of the rival team. “Really?” You questioned as you look at him and walked. It was maybe your sixth date and he had taken you through a small park close to his house. “Yeah” he says, “but they pulled out of the bid and Real got me.” “What a shame. What a waste” you say shaking your head and smirking. “It’s not that bad. You just see it like that because you are a strong supporter and everything related to us you will hate.” “I don’t hate it” you admit. “I just don’t agree to most of the things…” you shrug. “You know that in Barça I wouldn’t have had any chance of doing anything. With Messi, Neymar and Suarez, I stood no chance.” “You are good at what you do” you admitted. “You could have easily made your way into the team.” “Wouldn’t have been a major consideration for the starting eleven. It would always be them. There isn’t much to do. The only time I could’ve gotten a chance it could be when they are injured or suspended or something, or as a substitute.” “That’s how you started, though, and look at you now” you gesture at him and he smiles rather shyly. “The growing star of Madrid. The future of the club.” “People exaggerate” he said and you step in front of him. “This is coming from a strong Barça supporter. If I quote that, with all the pain in my heart, its because its true. Marco, if you keep it up like this, it’s just a matter of time until you get all the recognition you deserve. Yeah, you don’t have it now cause there is Cristiano and Benzema, and even Bale, but when they are all gone, you will be big.” “All those words make me believe it….Are You sure you don’t like the team? You seem to know a lot about us” he teases as he wraps his arms around your waist in an embrace. “Don’t push it, Asensio. I said what I said and nothing more” you roll your eyes and he chuckles before pressing a soft, lingering kiss on your lips. Currently you two have been together for three months. You have already moved in with him because of his constant begging to have you close to him and have someone to come to after games, which it just warmed your heart and you couldn’t say no. Not like you couldn’t say no to your boyfriend with those eyes and that smile, and his face…and personality. Today you would be attending the first El Clasico as his girlfriend. Inside of you, many emotions were roaming around like excitement, happiness, fondness, anxiety, competitiveness. You know, the typical feelings any football fan who supported one of these teams always feels.You wanted to know the final outcome, but you also didn’t, scared of the result. Your team has trained well, yes, but so have they and you have seen it close and personal. Nothing has changed from their strong competitive side. The game was at the Bernabeu and your boyfriend had trained hard with the squad the day before for this match which leaves you with a sleeping Marco by your side when you wake up. He had probably set up his alarm for a little later so you weren’t going to wake him up just yet. There was enough time and after he trained so hard, he deserved it. You stand up from the bed without too much movement or sound to not wake him up to do your morning routine, finishing with you doing some good breakfast for your boyfriend. You hear the dragging of lazy feet coming from the hallway, meaning Marco had already woken up. “Buenos dias” he mutters sleepily and you turn around to look at him. His hair was all over the place, eyes halfway closed as he runs a hand through his face. “Buenos dias, mi amor.” You turn to the stove and after a few seconds he is right behind you, arms around your middle body and his head resting on your shoulder, letting out a hum. “Slept well?” “Mhm” he mutters and you smile to yourself. “I was going to take you out for breakfast.” “Don’t worry. You have a match and I don’t want you to be late again.” “Last time wasn’t your fault. It was the traffic.” “Still late” you say. Your movements are almost robotic as you try to finish the breakfast while your boyfriend is hugging you like a koala from behind. “Mhm” he hums again and later places a kiss on your cheek before letting go and moving to the table. You take the chance to reach for the fridge and pull out his tea and placing it before him. “Wakey wakey” you tease before reaching for his plate and also placing it in front of him. “Thank you” he smiles and takes a sip from his tea. You two eat in silence for a few moments, something normal between you two while he started to wake up. “I rather have you sleepy, that way you can’t score” you tease with a grin. “Wouldn’t be surprised if you slipped a sleeping pill in my tea” a pause. “Actually, no wonder it tasted different” he says as he looks at the container skeptically. “Still good, though” he shrugs and drinks some more making you laugh. “I’d never do such thing” you gasp and stand up to place your dish in the sink, then reaching for his but he takes your arm and pulls you across his lap. “Sure you wouldn’t. Why would I ever not trust a Culé?” He teased and peppered your cheek with kisses making you squeal. “Marco!” You laugh and he stops seconds after. “You are coming to the match, right?” “Wouldn’t miss it” you admit. “Are you nervous?” “Not really, just excited and anxious. The usual” he shrugs. “As a Barça fan I shouldn’t say this, but as your girlfriend I will” you pause, “you will do amazing. I know it.” “Thank you, babe” he smiles, pats your bare thigh and leans in to kiss you softly. “I’ll go get ready” he says and you remove yourself from him. “Do you want to go by yourself or I take you?” “Hm, didn’t thought of that” for his other matches you’d both decide. You wanted to give him time with his friends without reminding himself that he had to take you home, so you went in your own car. “I guess I’ll decide in the last minute.” You shrug as you wash his dish. You didn’t want to hear the whole squad trash on your team after the game if they won. Hell, no. You’d lose it probably. “That usually ends in me taking you, so I’ll do it.” He gets in the shower and you move to the closet room to select your outfit. Of course, the first thing you reach for is your Barça light blue away kit. The home ones looked decent, but you didn’t like how the numbers looked on it. Then again, you didn’t have anyone’s number because of your boyfriend because if not, you’d have Messi’s or Iniesta’s for sure. Add to it that you also loved the blue color. A pair of black jeans set your clothing along with a pair of blue sneakers and you make your way to the room to decide how’d you get your hair to look like. Maybe you’d leave it fall and then set it up in a ponytail or a bun. The options were there. You spot your boyfriend walking out of the bathroom in just his boxers, a towel moving quickly on his hair to dry it up a little as he goes to the closet room. You brush your hair and decide you will let it be but take a hair tie in case it gets too hot in the stadium, which by no doubt you know it will. “I forgot to tell you I got your-” he was walking out of the closet with the third kit jersey in his hand. You had to admit, the Real Madrid jerseys this season were lit because of the blue tones. Your boyfriend knew this, so he brought you the away and now apparently the third kit. Now when you look up at him, his expression was serious and you forgot he trailed off a few seconds ago. “What’s wrong?” You ask him. “That!” He spats out as he points at you and it hits you. The Barça jersey. “What about it?” “You are not going to wear that tonight, are you?” “Uh, yes? What else did you expect me to wear for a El Clasico? Emphasis in the me.” “Geez, I don’t know. Maybe your boyfriend’s jersey!?” He scoffs. “Uh, I do that for all your other matches and you know I do it for you.” “And why can’t you do this one for me? Do you have any idea-” “Because it’s a El Clasico and I’m a Barça supporter. That’s why” you say, the expression in your face screamed disbelief. “You can’t really expect me to not wear my clubs jersey in such an important match.” “You are also my girlfriend! It means a lot to me when you wear the jersey supporting me. You can’t be serious about this.” “That’s the same thing I say” your arms cross against your chest. “It’s not a big deal, Asensio. Relax.” Another scoff and a roll of his eyes. “Not a big deal? Everyone will be watching us. Everyone will see us arrive. Imagine the press! They won’t let this go easily if it happens. ‘Asensio’s girlfriend a supporter of the rival team’. Imagine all the shit they will be talking.” “Oh, so now you care about the press? Wait, no, let me rephrase that. You now care about what the press will say about me wearing a jersey that isn’t yours? About what they will say?” “I’m just saying that I don’t want things to go out of hand. Imagine all the people talking about it. About you not supporting me.” “I can always get your name in the Barça jersey. You were going to play for us anyway, right?” You ask like you just said the weather was nice today, which earns the death of death glare from Marco. “I’m serious about this. I don’t want people hating you for doing this.” “You know I support you, I don’t think it’s necessary for the whole world to know it. And if it is, I think it’s quite obvious if I’m dating you.” “You don’t understand…” “But I do! You are caring more about the people, the press, the headlines about Y/N wearing a Barça jersey and not her boyfriend’s in an important match like El Clasico, instead of what I want. Marco, I wear your jersey for all the games. This is stupid.” “Oh, this is stupid for you?” “Caring about what other people will think its stupid, yeah.” “How would you feel the way around?” “I would be happy because I know that no matter what you support me even though you wear the rival’s jersey. A jersey doesn’t mean anything in a relationship.” “Are you serious!?” He laughs in disbelief. “I can’t believe this.” “You knew this could happen. You knew from the very beginning what I supported. You were okay with it.” “But I thought-” “That you could change that? That for these cases my feelings for you would take over? Reminder I lived in Barcelona for a couple of months because of my internship.” “I don’t say it because of changing your mind. I say it because I thought you’d support me no matter what.” “Well, I do, Marco! Always! What the hell do you want me to do, Marco? Wear your jersey!?” “Yes! And not go out with theirs.” “Well, since you care so much about people seeing us today if I go in this jersey and making a big deal out of it maybe I should go on my own.” “Or stay home.” “What!? Because of this stupidity you want me to stay home!? This is ridiculous.” “Wearing that is ridiculous.” “Are you going to act like your squad now? Criticizing everything we do?” “Your squad is no different. You have Piq-” “Enough, Asensio! Just go!” You raise your voice and look somewhere that is not him. “Are you not coming?” “No. I might as well stay home like you said. Wouldn’t want to ruin your headlines if you score with something related to me and my jersey” you say with all the bitterness you can put into the words. “I didn’t say it because of that. I said it-” “I heard you just fine” you say and your hands lower to your hips. He is still pissed, you can sense it, but the way his eyes were looking at you through all the anger screamed he felt bad about it. Your first fight and it had to be because of a jersey. Unbelievable. He stuffs his clothing and sneakers in his bag, looking at you discretely but you are in your phone scrolling through social media, before he leaves without another word. As soon as you hear the front door close, you toss your phone to the side in frustration, tears forming in your eyes. You were really trying to understand him, and you did, but the jersey of your club meant as much as his meant for him. You thought that him knowing that you supported him no matter what would work, but apparently he needed to see the jersey on you to believe that. He made such a big deal out of it that you felt like there was another reason behind it, but what? He wasn’t one to hide what he wanted to say, and right now you had proof of that. It had to be something that went further than just a rivalry thing. It was hard to tell right now with your mind so clouded as it was right now. After a two hours, the match is about to start and you turn on the TV to be able to watch it. You could go ahead and show up there, you didn’t had to listen to him, but you wanted to avoid more possible fights because of it. You loved Marco with all your heart and soul. He was a grown man that acted like a five year old and you loved that so much, plus he was so sweet and a gentleman that you didn’t want to ruin what you two had because of a jersey, or another stupid fight. You watch the team warming up and you are quick to look for Marco. You spot him with Lucas and Isco, the two guys laughing and smiling while his lips were pressed together as he stretched his legs, using Lucas for support. You just hoped that this wouldn’t affect him during the match which he was starting. He had to do better than that, right? Not let feelings cloud his actions? The match starts soon enough and you sit up comfortably in your bed watching the game with a bag of chips, the way you do when you don’t go to the matches. The times you didn’t go to support him was because they were away or you didn’t felt alright, but they weren’t that often. You watch the game and start groaning at the mistakes your team does and wasted chances, but cheer and clap when Real wasted their own. Marco wasted one chance to score, hitting the ball too hard and sending it over the goalie. Good, but not good. Ronaldo tries as well, but Marc Andre is quick to read the move and catches the ball without a problem. Suarez is first to score and you scream and jump on your spot on the bed while clapping frantically. It was the first goal of the first half, so you couldn’t do much of a celebration just yet, but it was a good start. They show your boyfriend walking away and running a hand through his hair with a frown, trying to tell himself to focus by the look of it, and you feel bad about it. He was trying hard to score and he has had the chances, but with everything going on through his head, maybe it was clouding his concentration after all. You couldn’t help but feel bad about it even if it wasn’t your fault. The whole situation had been stupid, and both of you just went with your thoughts instead of coming to a happy medium, or somewhat of an agreement. You watch them as they go into halftime. Head hanging low and serious expressions, your boyfriend being the first one to head down the tunnels on his own. You sigh at the situation and hold your head in your hands. The best you could do was send him a text, but he probably wouldn’t be able to see it so you decide against it. If you went to the stands, he wouldn’t see you since he isn’t expecting you. The best option, if any, was to meet him at the dressing room. You weren’t going to make it to the stadium in twenty minutes, but you could only hope for the best. To solve the jersey problem as well, you decided to take Real’s third kit jersey with you, yet you still had Barça’s on. A couple of more minutes and you are on your way to the Bernabeu. All this time thinking what would you do or how to let your boyfriend know you were there. You show your VIP pass to the security guard and he let’s you park in the players area. You get the notification on your phone that the second half had started and you groan in frustration. By barely you missed the chance to see him. Opening the door, you step out and fix yourself in the window, adjusting your jersey before looking at his in the passenger side. Teeth find the corner of your cheek and you start chewing on it nervously before reaching for it and taking it out. Next thing you do, you pull on the jersey on top of Barça’s. Honestly that is the most you can do for your boyfriend right now, if by any circumstances you changed your mind all you had to do was pull it off and you would be happy with the jersey of the club you did support. Making your way through the stadium, you show your pass several times until you reach the dressing rooms. “Did they all left already?” You ask the security guard close to the door. “Yes, ma’am. Just a couple of minutes ago.” “Thanks…” you frown and look around before turning back to him. “Is there any way I can watch the match from here? A TV or something?” “Not really, although since you have the pass you can go close to the end of the tunnel, as if you were going to the field. You can’t go further though.” “That’s perfect. Thank you” you say, smiling and nodding your head before walking to the direction. You felt somewhat uncomfortable as you saw the stadium full with Madrid supporters. This felt so odd and even bizarre for you, like you didn’t belong here. Asensio’s jersey was turning heavy and it was getting hot, so you make a bun with both jerseys and tie it up on your back before pulling your head into a ponytail. Good. Much better. The view wasn’t complete, you could see the midfield and a little bit more but that was about it. The score had turned into 2-0 and you smile at yourself because your team is winning. You spot your boy running and trying to go past the defense and he does, but that’s as much as you see. You try to go a little further out and managed to see the big screens that showed the game. One pass, two passes. Umtiti takes the ball from Benzema but Asensio reads the move and is quick to steal it and kicks the ball, finding the back of the net from the low right corner and you jump and clap, muttering a yes. You watch him celebrate with his teammates, do his celebration dedicating the goal to his mom and then throwing a kiss to the camera, meant for you. Your heart warms at the gesture and you lean against the wall, watching the rest of the game unfold. The second half is over and your team wins El Clasico with a 2-1 score and your lips curve into a bright smile. Your heel turns and you head over to the dressing room. The Madrid squad comes in since your team is out there celebrating. A second win at the Bernabeu, of course your team would stay out showing it off but not in an arrogant way. It was mostly in the corner where your supporters were. Head nods in acknowledgement to some players before you spot your boyfriend, coming in last right behind Isco with his head hanging low, which makes him not notice you. Taking quick steps forward, he looks at the sound and his eyes widen at the sight of you. Arms go around his neck and you are quick to press a kiss against his lips and pull away. “Nice goal you did there.” “How long have you been here?” “Right after half time ended. I wanted to see you before to apologize but-” “No. Y/N, you have no reason to apologize. There is nothing you need to apologize about. I was wrong” he says, fingers moving lazily on your hips. “I shouldn’t have asked you to stay home. I shouldn’t have felt embarrassed that my girlfriend wasn’t wearing my jersey and care for what others might think.” “Marco, it’s fine” you say, cupping his face between your hands, his sad eyes looking at yours. “I just didn’t know it would be such a big deal…” He sighs and pulls you closer, you could tell he was struggling to say his next words. “I really don’t have anyone close to me supporting me through games. Just you. I score because I know I have someone else besides mom watching me…” “Marco…” you say under your breath as you search for his eyes which have dropped to the floor. “Baby, hey” you try to get his attention and he hesitates for a second before looking at you. “No matter what jersey I wear. No matter what team I support. No matter what in general, I’ll always support you” you kiss his cheek and he smiles softly. “I love you. I’m with you always and you should know that. My teams won’t ever change my mind about that.” “I know. I just…I don’t know what happened before…I got so mad because of something so little that shouldn’t mean much to me. I would never really feel embarrassed about you. You have your teams and you support what you want, I shouldn’t force you to wear a jersey you don’t feel comfortable with” he tugs at the jersey to emphasize what he meant. “I do feel comfortable in your jersey. Don’t get me wrong. I just…when it comes to these matches between your team and mine, I feel like a betrayer for wearing another jersey that isn’t mine. Like a two faced person and I don’t like it because it isn’t me. Your team is not me” you conclude. “Now you, your name on the back, that is me because you are part of me.” “I know, babe. I’m sorry for it” he frowns before leaning in and kissing you passionately. You two shouldn’t be doing that in the middle of the tunnels, but after the fight you two had, you two deserved it. He is the first to pull away after your hands reach for his sweaty hair on the back of his neck. “You can take it off” he says with his lips only inches away from yours. “What?” “I know you have theirs under it…” he says and you flinch a little. “Take mine off..” he tugs at it. “Are you sure?” “I want you to be comfortable, and you are not. It’s okay…” he says and you look into his half closed eyes for assurance. When you find it, you simply nod your head and he reaches to take his jersey off from you, careful to only have the hem of his shirt in his fingers to not leave you in just your bra for taking both off by accident. “Wow. Wow. Wow. Not here” Ronaldo says as he steps out of the dressing room and you giggle. “Our boy already getting his comfort? Too fast…Hold on, is that the Barça jersey?” Isco questions. “Uuuuuuh…” you draw out and look at your boyfriend. “Yeah. She supports them more than us” he rolls his eyes and smirks. “Wow, bro. I feel sorry for you. Living and dating the enemy” Isco says with a click of his tongue and shaking his head. “It’s not that bad. There are times where we forget we support different teams and things just-” “And I’m leaving. Heard enough. See ya in training. Y/N….See ya whenever” Isco waves off quickly and your boyfriend laughs which Isco joins as he walks away. “Do you want to go celebrate?” “But you lost?” “But your team won. You are hiding your excitement for me, which I appreciate but you can go ahead and scream and squeal while I change.” “Are you sure about this? You don’t have to. I don’t want you to celebrate something you are obviously not happy about.” “Well, we don’t have to talk about the match or how your team won. Just taking you out for you to be happy and call it a celebration.” “You are sure?” “Positive.” “Alright…” you say. “Go change so we can go home and go out.” Then you spot Barça players coming in. “Oh my God…” you squeak and Asensio turns his neck to look at what you were looking at and he sighs dramatically. “Do you want a marker for the signs?” “One step ahead” you say as you pull a black marker out of your back pocket. “Go ahead and change. I’ll be right here” you grin before moving to meet the players before they take the turn to the dressing room. You saw your boyfriend not move from his spot but he was looking at you with a bright smile before shaking his head and chuckling. He was sure of one thing in your relationship. If it ever happens that you will have to choose between him and Barça, he was absolutely, one hundred percent sure, that he’d lose. In that right moment, he realized he could never change your mind, or the mind of any culé, to support his team just a little, but at least he got your support all the time.
