This video is INCREDIBLY exciting to me. Now, for those of you familiar with La Blogotheque might not think much of El Chico del Portico, but that's ok. The departure from the form isn't huge, and El Chico del Portico is just starting out, but they do something mostly unheard of in my home country of Peru: putting interesting content on the internet.
The majority of internet use in Peru is what I would call banal consumption, nothing interesting, and little to contribute back to the world. This, as a Peruvian native, has always bothered me. Peru has an incredibly rich culture, I've experienced it firsthand, and seeing it never leave our borders pains me every day. I partly blame the major telecom in Peru making upload bandwidth something difficult to come by, I could list more blame, but I think that's the biggest one.
Thankfully, El Chico de Portico might change that. Allegedly named after the Spanish name for the character Arnold from Hey Arnold, El Chico takes that same Blogotheque approach, surrounding the sounds of some neo-folk Peruvian groups with the sights of a city I miss dearly. I want to see them get bands who normally rely on the electronic rawness of their instruments to unplug and just bask in their own environment. They shouldn't be all about being unplugged, but a variety of performances would definitely add to what they've already got going on.
bonus: Anamanaguchi's Blogotheque appearance in Toronto during NxNE
props to my sister Chaska who told me about El Chico when she was visiting tonight
