I’ve talked vaguely about white liberals treatment of BW both in real life and in fandom spaces but I feel I should expand on that.

A while back a BW wrote an article about how BM are the white people of the black community. White people were offended and baffled and BM protested. The thing is it's very much true. BM, along with BW are oppressed under a system stacked against us (along with many other demographics), but because BW are women we are also oppressed by BM.

White liberals have the privilege to not have grown up in the hood like I did. So they can claim a world without cops wouldn't turn into open season on BW at the hands of BM. They can say gangs, drive-bys, and drug dealers aren't dangerous and BM shouldn't be prevented from doing it. But when I was little I couldn't use the playgrounds because drug dealers used them as a place to deal and recruit little boys. I couldn't go to the local skating rink because gangs would go there to fight and shoot it up. I had to play in the street with my friends because the MEN in the community were ruining spaces meant for children. Erasing safety in general actually. Not the white president, the men in the community. I can say systematic racism and the BM who did a random drive-by on my house and raped little girls were both oppressing me. Both are true.

But it's not true to the white liberals who have a complete blind spot when it comes to BW because they don't acknowledge we are women. They see us as strong unwavering aggressive machines. We make good allies but they don't need to help us because we are invincible duh. It's the "bw saved the day" shit after every election followed by them going right back to ignoring us the next day.

It's them ignoring all the crazy stats about violence against BW to whitesplain to us how abolishing the police is a great idea. The men harming us will simply stop if they know we don't even have someone we may call for help. Let's abolish the police because they harm BM and BM never do anything they should be arrested for including my rapist. He was simply a victim of white supremacy and I should have hugged him after like the strong mammy I was born to be. No need to talk about black femicide.

Basically, white liberals care about BM (because it's trendy not because they give a shit see ANTIFA), BW care about BM, BM care about BM, and no one gives a shit about BW. That's the reality

But white libs in fandoms are racist in a different way. They like to adopt the struggles of demographics that are oppressed in real life and apply it to white characters. It's why characters like Silco and Jinx are so appealing to them.

Make no mistake If Silco were black fans would be holding them accountable same with Jinx. But they are white and they are (were) oppressed. That's literally a white liberal dream. They get to ignore the fact that Silco and Jinx are rich and they got rich by oppressing poor people and forcing children into child labor.

They get to weaponize classism to excuse the violence and murder they commit against other poor people. Who cares how many orphans he creates or how many poor children he tries to murder.

Mind you not only was Silco rich off the backs of poor people and the labor of kids, he used the enforcers to help him not only oppress his own people but also frame Ekko (ironically a BM) and the Firelights for crimes he and Jinx were committing.

Jinx who killed multiple Zaunites on purpose and tried to kill Ekko later on. Jinx who is rich and has no motive for the violence she commits. Jinx who is working for the man she KNOWS killed her father figure and tried to kill her siblings. Jinx who never once takes responsibility for any of the choices she makes. But she's white. It's why the fandom supports her hetero ship with Ekko (who they headcanon as being her emotional crutch). They only care about heteronormativity when there is a black woman they want to erase. No other straight pairing gets called "disgusting", "forced", "shoehorned", "a betrayal", or "immoral". Mel is forceful and aggressive. She's a seductress who manipulates Jayce into her bed and into doing her evil deeds.

He should be kissing Vik's ass and worshipping the ground he walks on. Speaking of Viktor ...him using tech for his own gains, secretly merging his DNA with the core, getting addicted to shimmer, killing a fellow Zaunite and converting up her death + stealing her notes is something no one will discuss.

Because he's white , was once poor, and is "gay-coded". He's thus entitled to murdering a brown woman and entitled to Jayce's body. They weaponize LGBTQ+ rep in order to justify their racism much like the left does in real life.

Mel who shows no ill will towards Viktor is accused of being ableist and classist because she gave him a look when he was arguing with her. Mel who explains why she wants defensive weapons and has several scenes reiterating her motive is accused of wanting war and genocide.

Mel who has exchanged flirty looks with Jayce every episode before she kisses him is accused of raping him. Mel who isn't at all a part of the Vander/Silco/Jinx shenanigans in ep 1 is blamed for the death of Jinx's family because she "controls the council" (even though they often vote against her and Heimerdinger gets a pass despite being there when the cities were founded). Because she's black and rich. Thus they can weaponize poverty in order to villainize BW.

They shout over the people who are actually oppressed. Over the people who know what it's like to have drug dealers and gangs make your life hell while the government does the same on a less personal scale.

This is what white liberals do. It's not new. I won't even get into the weird ass envy/hatred/lust thing they have for bw. The dehumanizing and hypersexualizing shit they do is a whole other essay.

ARCANE S2 CONTENT

Act III spoilers

Talking with a friend, why did Caitlyn had a plain eye patch? Has a high functioning technology, tons of stuff, why does she simply wear an eye patch?

(first of all idk why she's wearing it, tbh), second, we realized all the sciency people are gone. Or at least the mains.

Heimer has been "disappeared" for them since Jayce voted him out of the council. We know Heimer has been the most brilliant mind for centuries, and a really beloved professor.

Jayce has disappeared since that final fight. Jayce was one of the reasons Hextech was cranked, and before that, he'd been inventive and science enthusiast as well. Also Cait trusted him for anything invention related. No questions asked (Cait and Jayce Siblinghood supremacy)

Viktor was tagged as enemy, probably even after the fight. Viktor was another reason Hextech was cranked. Also he was the assistant of Heimer. He wouldn't be there if he wasn't more than the best.

Even if she didn't like or trust, Jinx was a really brilliant inventor and creator. We saw what she could do in an universe with Hextech and without Hextech. She at S1 cranked Hextech with a few notations she stole, modified all her weapons to support Hextech, also create efficient weapons like bombs or traps. For S2 she created an arm for Sevika that doesn't make her dependent on shimmer or Hextech, so she didn't have to rely on anyone. And Jesus knows what else Jinx has invented out of scraps. After all those events, Caitlyn would've trusted Jinx with that, probably, but Jinx is another Missing In Action character.

Ekko is an inventor, but I consider he's out of reach. His people need him now more than ever.

Last but not least, Singed. We know he's been another brilliant mind, ignored but that doesn't cancel that he's been a good chemist, scientist, everything. He's another Out of Reach character.

Literally the people that could mark their names on history as the greatest inventors of Zaun and Piltover, that nobody even with their notations and books could have their works replicated. What Ambessa said. In a town full of scientists, they lost track of three of them and all went to shit.

◈ ━━━━━━ Some sunlight reaces the wall of the enclave, but not much, blocked by the great tree. Taliyah is fully uniformed and armed, pebbles and crystal bombs readied. It used to not be necessary to be armed at all times, but the three-way war between Zaun, Piltover and Noxus is only tangling further, and the Firelights find themselves pressed for survival-- and for peace, representing the fourth party that wishes not to be used as weapons or livestock in the war. Conversing with her team member, she absently fiddles with the pebbles in her pocket. The small stones, too, mark the passage of time and change; years ago, the wide open desert had been her loom, and she wove great boulders unbridled. Zaun had demanded subtlety, and she'd learnt the lessons given to her.

Further down in the enclave, their leader has been deep in discussion with a guest for a while now. The sudden call for Taliyah to join them isn't expected, snapping her away from her conversation. She peers down from her vantage point at the level of the tree's canopy, to glimpse at the guest-- a tall, slim silhouette beside Ekko-- and in one swift motion, Taliyah grabs her hoverboard and swoops down to them, wondering why they'd require her, of all the Firelights.

The first thing she notes about the guest is that they are very tall, rather impressed with the tilt of head required to look up at them. She then turns to Ekko, expecting an introduction, but he's already being dragged away by another Firelight, leaving the two to their own devices. This matter clearly doesn't involve him anymore.

There's a hint of the tingling, coursing sensation Taliyah connects to her affinity with the earth, more pronounced beneath the feet of the woman before her. It's a rare sensation, but one Taliyah recognizes from her encounters with mages, or being near Hextech devices. The latter is a much more common occurrence, and she has learnt to be wary of it. It almost smells like arrogance too, with the way the wielders of Hextech machinery so often believe in the supremacy of their tools.

The callous, scrutinizing edge to her expression softens, as she reminds herself that Ekko would only let a trusted friend visit and move about so freely. Introductions are brief, and Taliyah is quick to suggest a better spot for conversation-- a ring of makeshift benches at a corner of the enclave. With the scarcity now more pronounced since the start of the war, she doesn't have much to offer her guest; it's a tiny pouch of sticky caramels, mixed with Shuriman spices the Firelights had plundered, meant to flavor hot water. Saved for an occasion like this.

She drops one into her own mug, and she's briefly in her Babajan's tent again, pouring tea for her mother and the elder, the liquid pluming with the fragrance of spices. This custom of hospitality never left her, or she never left it, despite the many things she forsake after arriving at Zaun on the ship that was supposed to go to Noxus.

The melancholic notion gives way to wonder about her guest's aura. If she isn't a mere wielder of Hextech, could she be a mage or magicborn, like Taliyah?

��� So-- Caitlyn. You've come all this way. What do you have on your mind that I can tend to, in Ekko's stead? ❜

When Taliyah eyes the woman, there's the sense of a flow, from her to @ferinehuntress, but not the other way around. It's so brief it might have been a shiver, and Taliyah is left grasping for the sensation, before it dissolves into obscurity.

I've always wanted to meet another mage, Taliyah desires to tell her, in that lighter, unbarred voice from before she left Shurima. It's held back by wariness of indigo uniforms and fine textiles, acquired in her later life as a Firelight.

You are SO right for that! The idea that because Ekko is a good person he is OWED Jinx is so strange to see in the fandom. I've seen similar among Skye fans who believed she deserved Viktors time because she was nice to him. Like the idea the you are owed a person by virtue of not being an asshole is so gross and I cant believe its still a talking point.

Vander: We can't do anything about our oppressors, might as well appease them so they don't kill us more. Wars have collateral damage that I must avoid.

Vi: We can't do anything about our oppressors, might as well use them to kill my undercity enemies. Collateral damage? Sucks but inevitable.

This is what interests me. It seems she took the bad parts of his teachings but none of the good. She inherited his defeatism towards oppression and willingness to collaborate with Pilties, but not his altruistic reasons for doing so. The thing about Vander's pacifism is, every scene of him sharing his non-violent views, he's talking specifically about fighting Piltover.

His famous "fists aren't gonna solve your problems" line? Came after Vi suggested driving enforcers out of the undercity. In that same scene he praises her for beating up an undercity kid who wanted to steal their loot. The "who are you willing to lose" scene on the bridge? He only brought her there after she agreed with Sevika and suggested that they need to fight back against topside. Sidenote, that scene always amused me. He really says this:

Man, the winners in question are sitting in the ivory towers to your left. Come on now. Even in episode 3, when Vander tells Silco he's not that man anymore, it's again in the context of fighting Piltover, after Silco invites him back into his ranks to join a violent revolution against topside.

Vander disapproves of violence when it triggers topsider retaliation, because he's been thoroughly cowed into fearing their backlash after his failed rebellion. He discourages Vi's righteous anger because to him fighting topside isn't worth it if undercity people get hurt and die in the process. He opposes Silco's revolution for the same reason.

And now Vi is a defeatist towards topsider supremacy like him, and works together with topside to keep the undercity in check like him. But where they diverge, is that Vander's reason was a desire to protect his people from another brutal massacre by enforcers, even if he only traded in a quick death for a slower, more suffocating one. Vi's reason for collaboration is revenge against Silco even if it results in the deaths of undercity children in an enforcer raid. Vander also refused to give up one of his own to the authorities in contrast to Vi who so readily exposed Jinx to the council if it meant it got their support in striking against Silco. There's also Vander prioritizing saving an injured Vi instead of killing Silco in episode 3. Unlike Vi in episodes 8-9 prioritizing killing Silco's goons over finding Ekko and Jinx who were both injured after the bridge fight, one of them at death's door.

The whole enforcer factory raid resulting in the death of a kid was exactly the kind of thing Vander hoped to avoid with his collaboration. Vi on the other hand not only suggested it, she herself led the charge among the enforcers' ranks. Vander would be saddened by this for sure. It's like she took only half of his lessons to heart and then twisted them the wrong way.

But he'd be disappointed in Jinx too. She joined a violent revolution against topside, is a high-ranking weapons manufacturer for it, gleefully attacks topside not caring about their possible retaliation towards the undercity, and never backs down from attacking them even when they do retaliate. Nothing topside does or threatens to do will cow her. Vander would have had a heart attack from the Progress Day bombing alone, let alone the bridge blockade and council chamber bombings.

Both sisters diverged from Vander's views, Jinx in a more clear-cut way than Vi. Vi's is complicated - does she liken her class treachery to Vander's? "He worked with enforcers so I will too"? Did she understand his reasons for doing so? Does she see the difference in the ways they both collaborated with topside? I agree with you, they really need to address it as part of her arc. Hopefully they explore all this in season 2.

Isn't it so sad that Vi growing into the "punching hero" is the final proof that she completely failed to assimilate the lesson Vander tried to impart her in his last days?

Or maybe, that Vander failed to teach that lesson, no matter how much he verbalised it.

She whimsically sees the mining hextech gauntlets and associates them with Vander, and then eagerly takes them out to kill zaunites, while Vander chose to hang his gauntlets and tried to teach Vi that choosing violence only led to suffering, to loosing people.

The worst is that he's immediately proven right, as the escalation of violence at the cannery results in more deaths than if Vi had not picked up his gauntlets and come to fight.

Yet she leaves prison and seemingly never looks back. She takes to the gauntlets and we're meant to cheer her on.

Even Vander's pep talk to Vi makes me sort of sad. It's clearly not a Jedi force ghost. It's just what she wants to hear. And it's a Vander who tells her that Powder still needs her, and to go on... But in truth Powder currently doesn't fucking need her to yeet Sevika around the place. She's watching the fight, waiting for her turn to overpower Vi.

It's all so pointless and meaningless. It's a super cool faceoff, but no one wins anything from it, and Vi hasn't learnt. She even gets her ass saved from Sevika by one of the gauntlets shielding power she didn't even know about. A nifty Deus Ex just as she was apparently losing.

Anyway. Vander wanted peace. Vander convinced her SO MUCH that she went to sacrifice herself.

And then Vi grows up, and she becomes a hero who punches people to death.

Before Arcane was released, Riot silently changed her powers' names, btw. Arcane fans might not know, but her abilities went from:

Excessive Force > Relentless Force Assault and Battery > Cease and Desist

Do you think Vander would be proud? I don't think so lol especially with the "Piltover's enforcer" nickname.

I really hope this either gets changed, or that it gets addressed as part of Vi's character arc. It's nice for her to struggle with Vander's strange legacy. But she isn't doing that much in season 1. She isn't doing much thinking actually, and far more punching. It'd be nice if her character was looked at a little more closely. I'd hate to see her barrel down the "punch punch punch" pipeline without stopping to think, basically.
