Hello there! Arch here, for you-might-guess-what.
So, iirc I asked a while back about the names of some jobs related to horses and such. Currently, I'm wondering if you know any specific or interesting names for things towed by horses?
Things towed by horses. You've got carriages and chariots, travois, wagons, caravans, plows, sleds, logs, trollies... To be honest I'm not a driver. However I did do a quick Wikipedia search and there are a bunch of very, very specific terms. Also, horses pull in specific patterns, and each of those patterns has a name as well. You have tandem pulling, pair pulling, troikas, unicorns, four abrest, 4 in hand, 6 in hand, ect.
Here are some driving vehicles:
Barouche: an elegant, high-slung, open carriage with a seat in the rear of the body and a raised bench at the front for the driver, a servant.
Britzka: A long, spacious carriage of four wheels, pulled by two horses.
Cariole: A light, small, two- or four-wheeled vehicle, open or covered, drawn by a single horse.
Chaise: A light two- or four-wheeled traveling or pleasure carriage, with a folding hood or calash top for one or two people.
Charabanc: A larger wagon pulled by multiple horses.
Ekka - a one horse cart of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Fiacre: A form of hackney coach, a horse-drawn four-wheeled carriage for hire.
Fly: A horse-drawn public coach or delivery wagon, especially one let out for hire.
Phaeton: a light-weight horse-drawn open carriage (usually with two seats); or an early-nineteenth-century sports car
Sulky: a very light two-wheeled cart for one person, especially used for harness racing.
Surrey: A popular American doorless, four-wheeled carriage of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, usually two seated for four passengers.
Tanga: a light horse-drawn carriage used for transportation in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Tarantass or Tarantas: A Russian four-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle on a long longitudinal frame.
Tilbury: A light, open, two-wheeled carriage, with or without a top
Troika: a sleigh drawn by three horses harnessed abreast. Occasionally, a similar wheeled vehicle.
Vardo (gypsy wagon): a vardo is a traditional horse-drawn wagon used by English Romani Gypsies.
Victoria: a one-horse carriage with a front-facing bench seat. The body was slung low, in front of the back axle. Driven by a servant.
There are many more than I've listed here, these are just the ones that caught my eye.

Israel’s Early Vaccine Data Offers Hope JERUSALEM — Israel, which leads the world in vaccinating its population against the coronavirus, has produced some encouraging news: Early results show a significant drop in infection after just one shot of a two-dose vaccine, and better than expected results after both doses. Public health experts caution that the data, based on the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, is preliminary and has not been subjected to clinical trials. Even so, Dr. Anat Ekka Zohar, vice president of Maccabi Health Services, one of the Israeli health maintenance organizations that released the data, called it “very encouraging.” In the first early report, Clalit, Israel’s largest health fund, compared 200,000 people aged 60 or over who received a first dose of the vaccine to a matched group of 200,000 who had not been vaccinated yet. It said that 14 to 18 days after their shots, the partially vaccinated patients were 33 percent less likely to be infected. At about the same time, Maccabi’s research arm said it had found an even larger drop in infections after just one dose: a decrease of about 60 percent, 13 to 21 days after the first shot, in the first 430,000 people to receive it. Maccabi did not specify an age group or whether it had compared the data with a matched, non-vaccinated cohort. On Monday, the Israeli Health Ministry and Maccabi released new data on people who had received both doses of the vaccine, showing extremely high rates of effectiveness. The ministry found that out of 428,000 Israelis who had received their second doses, a week later only 63, or 0.014 percent, had contracted the virus. Similarly, the Maccabi data showed that more than a week after having received the second dose, only 20 out of roughly 128,600 people, about 0.01 percent, had contracted the virus. In clinical trials the Pfizer vaccine proved 95 percent effective after two doses in preventing coronavirus infection in people without evidence of previous infection. The Israeli results, if they hold up, suggest the efficacy could be even higher, though rigorous comparisons to unvaccinated people have not yet been published. “This is very encouraging data,” Dr. Zohar said. “We will monitor these patients closely in order to examine if they continue to suffer from mild symptoms only and do not develop complications as a result of the virus.” Both Clalit and Maccabi warned that their findings were preliminary and said they would soon be followed by more in-depth statistical analysis in peer-reviewed scientific publications. Israel, where more than 40 percent of the population has already received a first dose of the vaccine, has become something of an international test case for vaccination efficacy. With its small population, highly digitized universal health system, and rapid, military-assisted vaccine rollout, Israel’s real-world data provides a useful supplement to clinical trials for researchers, pharmaceutical companies and policymakers. Israel made a deal with Pfizer in which the drug company ensured the country an early and steady supply of vaccines in exchange for data. The Health Ministry has made public a redacted version of the agreement. Despite its race to vaccinate, Israel is suffering a devastating third wave of the coronavirus. The government reimposed a strict national lockdown this month after weeks of soaring infections and deaths. Israel was set to halt most air travel in and out of the country starting at midnight on Monday in an effort to block the arrival of emerging virus variants that could threaten the country’s vaccination campaign. Two vaccine makers said Monday that their vaccines were slightly less effective against one of the new variants. While real-world data like that from Israel is useful, it is subject to variables that can skew the results and which clinical trials try to account for. Covid-19 Vaccines › Answers to Your Vaccine Questions If I live in the U.S., when can I get the vaccine? While the exact order of vaccine recipients may vary by state, most will likely put medical workers and residents of long-term care facilities first. If you want to understand how this decision is getting made, this article will help. When can I return to normal life after being vaccinated? Life will return to normal only when society as a whole gains enough protection against the coronavirus. Once countries authorize a vaccine, they’ll only be able to vaccinate a few percent of their citizens at most in the first couple months. The unvaccinated majority will still remain vulnerable to getting infected. A growing number of coronavirus vaccines are showing robust protection against becoming sick. But it’s also possible for people to spread the virus without even knowing they’re infected because they experience only mild symptoms or none at all. Scientists don’t yet know if the vaccines also block the transmission of the coronavirus. So for the time being, even vaccinated people will need to wear masks, avoid indoor crowds, and so on. Once enough people get vaccinated, it will become very difficult for the coronavirus to find vulnerable people to infect. Depending on how quickly we as a society achieve that goal, life might start approaching something like normal by the fall 2021. If I’ve been vaccinated, do I still need to wear a mask? Yes, but not forever. The two vaccines that will potentially get authorized this month clearly protect people from getting sick with Covid-19. But the clinical trials that delivered these results were not designed to determine whether vaccinated people could still spread the coronavirus without developing symptoms. That remains a possibility. We know that people who are naturally infected by the coronavirus can spread it while they’re not experiencing any cough or other symptoms. Researchers will be intensely studying this question as the vaccines roll out. In the meantime, even vaccinated people will need to think of themselves as possible spreaders. Will it hurt? What are the side effects? The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is delivered as a shot in the arm, like other typical vaccines. The injection won’t be any different from ones you’ve gotten before. Tens of thousands of people have already received the vaccines, and none of them have reported any serious health problems. But some of them have felt short-lived discomfort, including aches and flu-like symptoms that typically last a day. It’s possible that people may need to plan to take a day off work or school after the second shot. While these experiences aren’t pleasant, they are a good sign: they are the result of your own immune system encountering the vaccine and mounting a potent response that will provide long-lasting immunity. Will mRNA vaccines change my genes? No. The vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer use a genetic molecule to prime the immune system. That molecule, known as mRNA, is eventually destroyed by the body. The mRNA is packaged in an oily bubble that can fuse to a cell, allowing the molecule to slip in. The cell uses the mRNA to make proteins from the coronavirus, which can stimulate the immune system. At any moment, each of our cells may contain hundreds of thousands of mRNA molecules, which they produce in order to make proteins of their own. Once those proteins are made, our cells then shred the mRNA with special enzymes. The mRNA molecules our cells make can only survive a matter of minutes. The mRNA in vaccines is engineered to withstand the cell’s enzymes a bit longer, so that the cells can make extra virus proteins and prompt a stronger immune response. But the mRNA can only last for a few days at most before they are destroyed. The early Israeli numbers are based on the first people to get the vaccine. Such people, experts say, are likely to be more concerned or informed about the virus and therefore more careful about social distancing and mask wearing. They could also differ from those who did not rush to get the shot by location and socio-economic status. Also, experts say, the disease changes over time. Prof. Ran Balicer, the chief innovation officer at Clalit and a leading Israeli epidemiologist, said that two-week-old data can be like evidence from a different era or “about a million vaccines ago in Israeli terms.” Maccabi said that it would release more data weekly. “The main message,” Maccabi said in a statement, is that even the first dose of the vaccine “is effective and reduces morbidity and lowers hospitalizations by many tens of percent.” A hazard of releasing raw data, experts cautioned, is that it can be misinterpreted. After Clalit first publicized its early numbers two weeks ago, many people heard about a 33 percent drop in cases, not the expected 95 percent, and jumped to the erroneous conclusion that the Pfizer shot didn’t work. There was an uproar in Britain, where the authorities have delayed giving the second dose by up to 12 weeks, as opposed to the 21-day gap on which Pfizer based its trials. Professor Balicer thought of the results as good news and was dismayed at how they were interpreted. “We were reassured enough to tell everyone that we were seeing what we were supposed to be seeing right after Day 14,” he said. “I don’t know how it turned into a message of ‘Oh my God, it doesn’t work.’” Professor Balicer, who is also the chairman of the team of experts advising the Israeli government on its Covid-19 response, hoped the positive results might have a bearing on an imminent government decision regarding a third lockdown. “Covid has turned us all into amateur scientists,” said Talya Miron-Shatz, an associate professor and expert in medical decision-making at Ono Academic College in central Israel. “We are all looking at data, but most people are not scientists.” Israel, which began vaccinating people on Dec. 20, has given a first shot to more than 2.6 million Israelis and both shots to more than a million people. After starting with people aged 60 and above, health care workers and others at high risk, Israel is now offering vaccines to people over 40 and to high school students aged 16 to 18 to allow them to get back to school. The military is assisting the effort and 700 army reserve medics are helping at vaccination centers. Prof. Jonathan Halevy, the president of Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, had not studied the findings of the H.M.O.s but said that two weeks after the first dose was rolled out he began seeing a drop in severe cases. “I know several people who became infected close to the time they got the vaccine, but they got it lightly,” he said. Still, Israel remains under a national lockdown and officials are concerned about the emergence of new, highly contagious variants. It remains to be seen how effective the vaccines are against the new variants. Despite what appears to be the early success of the vaccine, the virus continues to wreak havoc in Israel. Professor Halevy said his hospital’s Covid wards were still packed to capacity and he expected that it would take another two or three weeks to see a decline. The virus has killed more than 1,000 Israelis so far this month alone, nearly a quarter of those who have died from the pandemic virus overall. Health officials and experts have attributed much of the recent increase in infection to the fast-spreading variant first detected in Britain. Source link #data #early #Hope #Israels #Offers #Vaccine

Ruvi
race: Gnoll
Height: 7′3″
Ruvi, father to Chuck and Ekka. While blind, the most experienced and skilled fighter among all the gnolls of the tribe. He's goofy, snarky, and somewhat arrogant with a cunning wit, but still good to share wisdom and his love for his family and tribe.
--- Ruvi had a background as an adventurer, setting out from his original tribe long ago for various disagreements he held with them. He toured the world and challenged himself against all kinds of beasts and villains in his quests and always came out on top. As he grew older, he seeked to find a place to settle down. He found this in a love with a gnoll known as Mala. After meeting with her every year at their annual ceremonies and bearing two children, he eventually settled down with the tribe. Years later Mala passed away fighting during conflict with neighboring humans. Ruvi continues her legacy in looking after her children and ensuring they will grow to be strong.

Week #6
Wow that week went by fast. Since Wednesday was a public holiday, most of my classes were cancelled so I only had to show up three times all week. That was pretty nice. I get asked a lot “Are you even studying over there?” and I mean I guess. Sorry I can’t help it that Australians like a nice long weekend!
The holiday that gave me such a blessing is called “Ekka” or “People’s Day.” They have something actually called “The Ekka,” which my friends and I went to that day and it’s basically a much smaller (disappointingly,) more laidback version on the Minnesota State Fair. It was a celebration of bringing the farm to the city. It literally was a tiny version of Minne’s. Down to the cows and pigs and everything. Unfortunately no deep fried pickles or sweet martha’s cookies, but they did have churros! What I mean by a laidback version is that the cows and bulls (like 800 kilo bulls. MASSIVE.) aren’t even in enclosed pens they just are chillin’ tied to a bar and y’all could just walk up to them and pet them. Every. Single. Animal. Except horses. But horses are scary tbh.
The biggest difference between Minne’s and Ekka is that the Ekka has a huge free show at the end of the night. It’s not like a grandstand concert, it’s just odd forms of entertainment. It started with a kid’s fireworks show (so they could go home and sleep if they were being crabby,) that had LED lighted horses running around the track and people riding motorbikes with actual flames shooting out of the back to a soundtrack of Australian music. Of course this included Down Under by Men at Work, and the Vegemite theme song. This was followed by horse races with weird buggies behind them that weren’t chariots but weren’t carts either. I have no idea what they were. Followed by monster trucks. Followed by guys racing on horses and jumping up to the top a semi truck like in that one movie I’m blanking on the name of that I haven’t seen but one of my friends told me that’s what it was from. Followed by a colonial re-enactment of a farm. And then there was something with ATV’s but at that point we’d been standing too long so we left. There was apparently other things going after including a second fireworks show.
The next day two of my friends and I left for our hiking trip. We stayed in a tiny town called Caboolture. There wasn’t much to do there but we went to a movie and wandered around and had a good time. We just needed a place to stay along the way.
Friday we left bright an early for the Glass House Mountains. When we arrived at the train station there, we all got confused as to which mountain we were supposed to walk to and which direction to go to get to said mountain, so we called an Uber. All I can say is God bless Joan the Uber Driver because she saved our lives. Maddy apparently had almost lead us on a death hike. “Mt. Tibrogargan! No no you should go to this other one, Mt. Ngungun! The only people that go to Mt. Tibrogargan are the boys that want to beat their chests and show off and usually end up having to call a helicopter because they either get stuck at the top and don’t know how to get down or else they fall and break their legs!” Thank you Joan the Uber Driver. The other trail was not as scary because people were hiking it with babies strapped to their fronts. But honestly as in shape as I am it was a near death experience carrying all of my weekend gear and cameras and whatnot to the top of that thing. I think I’m going to do it again this week as a day trip so I don’t have to carry all of that. But boy was the view beautiful. I was at the absolute highest point of a mountain and I had climbed it.
After the hike we took the train to Caloundra and treated ourselves to a GOOD meal. I had calamari and a fancy blue coconut drink and watched the beach from the window of the restaurant patio. I felt like I deserved it after that hike.
Saturday we left early in the morning again up to Noosa Heads. Noosa Heads is the type of place retirees, young families with small children, and families of retirees with kids that had young children hang out. It’s a really nice moderately touristy area. There were A LOT of food options. I treated myself to eggs benny for lunch. This was the weekend of eating like a queen. But enough about food, the beach! The beach was amazing. The water is so blue and the sand is so soft it squeaks when you walk on it. I haven’t found anywhere else in the world that happens. (Not that I’ve been all that many places yet.) We spent the day at the beach, and did the same thing the next day. There were some guys that used to live in IH Bridgett knew so we hung out with them. It was a lot of fun but a very tiring weekend. We took the bus and train from Noosa Heads directly to UQ on Sunday and it took about 4 hours. But the excitement isn’t going to calm down any time soon because this weekend is the Ball and I’m working on planning some trips! See y’all next week if I survive Ball

wIt’s really weird going to another country and having all the national holidays be different. You sort of expect to have things like fourth of july or labor day weekend off. Instead, here we have Ekka! I had never heard of it beforehand, but last Wednesday 16 August, there was a public holiday from work and school to attend basically a statewide county fair!
Tumblr media
All the farmers from all over Queensland (possibly more) bring their livestock and animals for a week of shows, races, and events. For the common goer, this means tons of tents filled with animals! You can milk a cow, pet baby sheep and goats, and watch sheepdog shows and horse races!
Tumblr media
Aside from the animal tents, there’s also typical carnival stuff - rides, games, shops, and plenty of food! And of course in the center of it all is a giant arena where you can watch competitions - horse races and jumping events, morotcycle stunts, etc - all day. Around noon there was something called the grand parade, where what looked like every animal was brought out to march.
Tumblr media
Around five or so, when the games and rides started closing, everyone gathered into the main Arena. Ekka is actually famous for its end-of-day fireworks show, but before that there’s a few more performances. There was some comedy, some races, some escape-artist stunts, a bit of everything really. Some of my favorites were these chariot races on the horses and a quick sheepdog show where a pair of sheepdogs drove a herd around the arena.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally at the end of the day there were the fireworks! It was pretty spectacular. Not blow your mind away spectacular like the disneyland shows, but a little better than your average fourth of july firework craze, so not bad!
Tumblr media
If anything, it was a bit hot during the day, even in the middle of winter. It actually hit 90 during the day, and that combined with throngs of people didn’t do much good. I was sweating even in fairly light clothing, and despite wearing sun protection and reapplying sunscreen regularly, ended up a tad sunburned :( I’d be really careful of that if I went again. Avoiding dehydration is also an issue, but luckily they do let you bring in your own food and water, and there are vendors that sell some great smoothies.
Overall though, it was a lot of fun! Cool animals, cool shows, and a good excuse to be touristy for a day!

Canada
Sorry folks, I missed a day because we have been very busy and I didn't get a chance to update.
We had a big start to our Stampede experience.  We caught the train to the grounds because of the number of people and lack of parking around the grounds.  To give you an idea we tried 3 train stations before could get a park.
Hit the grounds and had a couple of hours to kill before we could get into the grandstand for the start of the events.  Walked around and it reminded me of the Ekka pretty much with side show alley (bigger than ours) food stalls and in the pavilions there were stacks of sales opportunities.  It was very hot strolling around so we found a beer garden to have a cold one or two, but it didn't help much.
In we go to the grandstand and find our seats and the first event is the Chuck Wagon races.  You need to try and view this on YouTube because it is very hard to describe, needless to say it is very exiting and gets the crowd going.
Next up was the Grandstand Show which was spectacular and the cast is made up young Canadians who put on a great show and is followed by a fireworks display that was terrific.
Next day we headed for the Canadian Badlands which is their version of the desert.  It get here we had to travel across the prairie for an hour or so but the countryside was typical farmland, very green and lush with plenty of crops growing.
We hit the badlands and went to a town called Drumheller where a significant find of dinosaur remains have been found over the years and a museum has been build to display the finds.  You could spend several days here and still would not cover the entire museum.
Lunch time called and we headed to The Last Chance Saloon in Wayne for a bite and a beer.  This place was very popular and on weekends a lot of bikers congregate here.
We had to rush home and prepare for a BBQ so we could met a lot of Wes and Larry's friends.  This bunch of guys are a crazy mix of people and we had lots of laughs and beers.  It reminded me of being at an Aussie BBQ because these people carry on much the same way as us.
Back to the Stampede tomorrow for the rodeo after we have been to some bar and had a beer and burger.
Hopefully more tomorrow.
Gentleman and Lady Tourist.
