The exhibition includes a selection of Susanna Flocks recent works and new works derived from her current research into the relationship between the body and its technologically-mediated environment. The loop is a recurring theme through all her works in the exhibition. The video installation W-A-S-D addresses the cycle of death and respawning in the digital world of computer games. The work is concerned with the question of what death means in a simulated digital reality and with which methods the concept of infinity is affected by digital culture. The movement of slowly scrolling through the image culture of the present sets the rhythm for the video work fetish finger. Recurring elements of the video are generated images and the gab between materiality and virtuality.   In the mobile video installation „vacuums visuals“, not only the hoover robots, but also the projected images are trapped in their own loops. „In between Loops“ brings together works that examine our globally connected experience arising from the fusion of real and virtual space.

“There are so many layers !!”

Je pense que c’est une des premières exposition présente à la galerie de l’EKA où je prend des photos. Ils y en a pourtant toutes les semaines, voir même plus. Mais cette espace est propice à la réflexion, aux questionnements, à l’admiration et à la pleine présence. C’est pourquoi je n’ai que très peu de photos, car la plupart du temps où j’y suis, je profite à fond de ce que je vois et de ce que j’expérimente.

Ceci est le vernissage de l’exposition, de la performance de Marta Vaarik.

Finite Space

This is a mind map entirely about one of my original characters. Everything on it is connected to the character Eero, who was cursed to look spiky like a cactus. It’s vaguely divided into three sections: character design, story and setting. I write characters and stories I’ve always wanted to see in comics or graphic novels, but never have, at least not in an Estonian context – something slightly supernatural, with queer overtones, which takes place in a down-to-Earth setting, like a panel building area in Tallinn. This usually stays inside my head. It’s out of my comfort zone to show all the concept art I make for a hypothetical comic I know I’ll never actually get around to. The whole idea infinitely grows in my mind and taking it out and putting it on paper seems like an impossible task.

My artwork draws heavily from personal life experiences with trauma, poverty, and mental illnesses. Striving to maintain optimism and humor for mental well-being, I find inspiration in childhood book authors and illustrators like Edgar Valter and Tove Jansson. My preferred techniques, childishly, include comics and animation. I see myself as living the life of a tragicomic character; adversity shapes the narrative and brings joy to someone. Absurd and depressing incidents, experiences, and phenomena often look good on paper. Transforming experiences into artwork, I become both the creator and the first reader. My first job was as a cashier at Comarket, a retail chain that no longer exists. The cat from the logo serves as a simple self portrait, as if that job shaped me into that identity permanently, given that my only paid job is still in retail. The idea of working a cash register for the rest of my life fills me with existential dread and drains all hope for a bright future. Anyway, I value traditional tools on paper, from pencil to pen, as well as various printmaking techniques from aquatint to screen printing. When it comes to drawing, I prefer the very permanent, unerasable line of a ballpoint pen, because pencil annoys me with its habit of getting blurry over time and infecting other drawings. The unique line of a ballpoint pen inspired my Bachelor's degree thesis, where I filled a roll-on deodorant with ink and used it as a large pen.
