NADINE DAHL. college junior; twenty. eiza gonzalez. OPEN.
and, as nancy downs once said:
“You know, in the old days, if a witch betrayed her coven, they would kill her.”
BEFORE THE PARTY;
Years after she passed her prime, journalists in the industry would write pieces asking why. Why, above everyone else, had Nadine Dahl been such an enchanting child star? With a snap of her fingers, everyone was under her spell. Maybe it was because she was perfectly plain and non-threatening, in the way that child stars had ceased to be around her time. Maybe it was because of that thousand watt smile that could force anyone to stagger. Or maybe, just maybe, it was because she needed the spotlight more than anyone else did.
Her upbringing was nothing short of pathetic from day one, and it wasn't really anyone's fault besides the men who sought to ruin it. After all, her mother didn't know any better; she'd been abused growing up, and so she only managed to seek out men who would do the same. This included Nadine's father, and behind him was a line that seemed to be never-ending. It was all two-fold outside of that, really. One, her mother couldn't make rent without another paycheck. Two, she was somehow under the impression that Nadine desperately needed a father figure. Nadine guessed that she had to convince herself that Nadine needed something out of it too. If that was the case, she could feel less guilty. That was probably the most useful reward Nadine's childhood brought: she could see into people, and understand why they were how they were. She could play to that, and see what would come of it.
How Lana Turner was discovered was only ever a rumor, but the way Nadine Dahl was discovered was true, one hundred percent fact. And it was a sob story because she'd made it so. She made a scene in the middle of a pharmacy, running and screaming, with no particular desire other than getting some free candy out of it — so her mother wouldn't feel compelled to pester yet another piece of trash boyfriend for the extra cash. But they lived in Los Angeles, and as she flailed about screaming, she ran into a tall, lanky man who had a clearance pass pressed into his palm. Her eyes quickly scanned over it, saw the word agency, and that's all it took. She turned on the tears, and she turned on the charm.
The New York Times would profile it later, after her first big film hit screens. She was pulled out of the gutter, a success story. The industry regarded her with a great deal of pity, which she understood, but never minded. So long as she got what she wanted, Nadine never minded much. She dropped her real last name, took on the far more ambiguous Dahl, posed for photos ad nauseum, and accepted the roles her agent asked her to. She listened. But it was when she didn't get what she wanted — that's when all hell broke loose.
And so, at the height of her young career, before the awkward phase kicked in, something turned. Nadine had found much success as a female Macaulay Culkin of sorts, most well known for playing a young, precocious witch, and anyone was left eating out of the palm of her hand. She lived lavishly, spent recklessly, and never seemed to hit a brick wall. There was one, though, waiting in the wings: her mother.
When she'd become famous, Nadine exhibited one bit of control that she considered most important to her; if her mother was going to date anyone, the guy needed Nadine's approval before ever stepping into the house. That most likely meant someone famous and heavily vetted – and, perhaps, hollow inside, but that was better than what her mother was used to bringing home. And for years, that worked, but her mother grew bored sitting in their large, luxurious apartment, doing nothing, and wanting for nothing. So she got back into her old habits, loving men who did not love her back.
Nadine had become so used to things going her way that she no longer had an apparatus for how to react when things didn't. She only had one plan, tucked into a dark corner of her brain, and when the first man lunged at her in Nadine's view, she used it. Years ago, she'd stolen a gun from one of her mother's boyfriends, if only to keep him from using it, but it had come in handy now. At fourteen, she realized how empty she was. She only said, "I told you not to do it." Her mother screamed. She felt nothing. And she was fine with it. She'd exhibited control, after all. That was all she'd wanted.
Her lawyers would argue that it was self-defense, but more importantly, that it was inevitable. The stories about Nadine's background were well-documented and inescapable. She was the product of abuse. Of course she'd turned out this way. But she never seemed despondent, or even the slightest bit sad. On the stand, she turned on that switch that she used for television and movies, and smiled. She said being famous had been her way out of all that, but she'd never really left. It was what she'd been trained to say, and she'd never given thought as to whether or not it was true. But to everyone else, it clearly was.
She smiled, only smiled. But her image had grown sour, because the public had seen what sinister things lay underneath. She won on account of self-defense and escaped juvenile detention, but her agent took her by the hands when it was all over and spoke to her gently, as if she were something bound to shatter; he said she'd never be famous again. She'd be infamous, but never famous. So it was best that she left and made some new life for herself. Perhaps, even, go to a normal high school and figure out how to be normal herself.
But at some religious academy in Illinois, Nadine Dahl was never going to be normal. She was going to be ogled. And she despised it, for she couldn't exhibit any control over how others regarded her. Once a child star murderer, always a child star murderer. No one ever searched for the nuance. And so, she transformed — anything to get what she used to have back. Only people who went to St. Agnes could track how perfectly ordinary she looked to begin with. Somehow, she went from that to ethereal. Some would say she was the most beautiful girl they'd ever seen. And then that novelty wore off, because she just didn't seem real, and it became clear that it couldn't be just her expense account and her plastic surgeon that helped her along.
Where there was work, no matter how ridiculous and humiliating, she took it — if only to be a part of the narrative in the news, and know that she could still be heard.
When that did nothing for her career and the journalists grew bored of talking to her instead of just around her, she recalibrated. Rethought. Something had to give. She couldn't be stuck in some small town, as some sad story other people told. She observed, and she found her solution. Small potatoes, sure, but bigger than her mother, at least, especially now that she wouldn't speak to her anymore.
Three insecure weirdos who needed a friend. Through them, she recognized that she still had the ability to identify what people most needed. They were so desperate to have someone that their preconceived notions didn't keep her at arm's length. She shapeshifted, changed her moods, became the right person they needed at the right time; acting had certainly helped with that. Sometimes, they hated her, but they couldn't leave her. They were her strays, not necessarily lovingly cared for but always waiting at her feet. Beckett needed to chase beauty, Reed needed someone to enable her anger, and Saskia needed to be a condescending hero for the others.
She knew all of this. And, other than what the world had to say about her, after years of high school and years of college, they knew next to nothing about her. That was how she liked it. It wasn't ever about having friends, not really. In the end, Nadine had never really had a single friend in her life. But she had pawns. She always had pawns.
DURING THE PARTY;
Nadine was planning on going to the party, though seemingly all of the others were pissed at her and it was a real possibility she'd be going sans posse. The idea that they'd all finally gone the way of the lion and gotten some courage was more than irritating to her, but the alcohol would help her figure out how best to reel them back in. They always came back, even if it required some finessing.
She'd just gotten her dress on when Reed began battering on her door. Geez, was she so eager to make up that she was going to take the damn thing down all by herself?
But that wasn't it at all. Reed had come with Beckett in tow, and she was furious in a way that not even Nadine had seen before, though she had cultivated this side of Reed oh so carefully.
"What are you so pissed about?" Nadine asked, almost instantly regretting having asked.
So, Laurel was missing. And she was seemingly to blame. But she had nothing to do with it. Nothing at all.
Reed was just about to force her to make an expensive trip to her plastic surgeon when Saskia interrupted, to her immense relief — and she'd never, ever, been relieved at the sight of Saskia in her life.
She kept on swearing that this wasn't her fault, that something bigger was at play, or maybe Laurel had packed up and left of her own volition — but no one believed her.
If she had friends, they would have believed her. But she didn't have friends. She only had pawns.
alternate faceclaims and prompts.
