Etymology of negatives in north germanic languages
Suffix -gi “not” was combined with a lot of words to create negatives.
Old Norse aldri “never” → 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 aldrig, 🇮🇸 aldrei, 🇳🇴 🇫🇴 aldri
from aldr “age” (🇸🇪 ålder 🇮🇸 🇫🇴 aldur 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 alder) + -gi
Old Norse ekki “not” → 🇸🇪 icke, 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 ikke, 🇮🇸 ekki 🇫🇴 ikki
from eitt “one” (🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 ett 🇮🇸 🇫🇴 eitt) + -gi
Old Norse engi “no one” → 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 ingen, 🇮🇸 enginn, 🇫🇴 eingin
from einn “one” ( 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 en, 🇮🇸 einn, 🇫🇴 ein ) + -gi
Old Norse hvárki “neither” → 🇸🇪 varken, 🇳🇴 verken, 🇩🇰 hverken, 🇮🇸 hvorki, 🇫🇴 hvørki
from hvárr “which” ( 🇳🇴 kvar, 🇮🇸 hvor ) + -gi
!!!Bonus!!!
The word 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 på "on, at, upon" comes from combination upp á (up on) which is cognate with English upon

Welcome to the Eurovision Song Bracket!
!!Post updated March 11!!
Pinned post. I'll be editing this post as the tournaments progress to keep things as accurate as possible.
What is this blog about?
This is a tournament style blog, focusing on songs from the Eurovision Song Contest. There will be various themes for tournaments, but only one theme will be going on at a time.
Addressing concerns about boycotting Eurovision over Israel: We do not support genocide. However, the previous artists from Israel are not responsible for current world events. I do not wish to punish artists for things their government is doing. Thus, I've decided that songs from Israel pre-Oct 7, 2023 will still be allowed to participate, but songs from Israel after that date will not be allowed in any of my tournaments. This blog will run as if Israel is not participating in Eurovision, much like Russia. Songs from Russia pre-2022 will still be allowed, because once again the artists are not their governments. Please do not let current events influence your votes. Please continue to vote for your favorite song, not country.
What is the current theme?
We are currently running the Decades Tournament! Songs will compete against other songs from their own decades. Once all decades are complete, the winners will have a final showdown. As of right now, we are on the 90s
Can I submit songs?
Yes and no. As the Decades tournament is currently ongoing, spots are extremely limited. Each decade may only have 32 entries for this tournament. The 90s and the 2000s are currently ongoing, which means the next rounds are for 2010s, and 2020-2023. all of which are now full! 2024, and 2025, will not be included simply because that bracket had already filled up before the 2024 contest took place. If this blog grows, and people want the 2020s to be a bigger bracket, then I'll consider it.
Once the Decades tournament is over, we'll do something else. I do have some ideas, but I am open to suggestions on tournament themes, and of course when that happens I will make the appropriate forms and you can submit songs again.
Decades Tournament Winners:
The 50s: 1958 - "Lilla stjärna" by Alice Babs (Sweden) The 60s: 1965 - “Poupée de cire, poupée de son” by France Gall (Luxembourg) The 70s: 1974 - “Waterloo” by ABBA (Sweden) The 80s: 1988 - “Ne partez pas sans moi” by Céline Dion (Switzerland) The 90s: [Ongoing] The 2000s: [Setting Up] The 2010s: [Not Started] 2020-2023: [Not Started]
Current live polls: !! I've decided that I'm going to try to run the 2000s at the same time as the 90s due to fear that I might lose motivation !!

Who runs this blog?
Hello! You may call me Cyrus, I am a transman, he/him, and I am in my 30s. This is a side blog, so you will not see any likes or follows from this blog. I am, unfortunately, a USAmerican (please save me) However I am learning Norwegian and would absolutely love to move to Norway or somewhere else in Europe some day. Preferably soon. That being said, English(and US spelling just because of habit) is the main language that this blog will be using, although you are welcome to send asks/comments/etc in your own language and I'll do my best to translate. Obviously, as previously stated, it will be easier for me to translate Norwegian and sometimes Danish and Swedish, but any language is welcome, not just European languages.
Do you vote in the polls?
After much thought put into it, yes. I do vote on every single poll, because at the end of the day I am also a fan of these songs... and I don't like having to wait a week to see how the polls are doing. However, I have decided that if a poll comes to tie, I will consider my vote void, and the one that I did not vote for will move on.

JóiPé and Króli - Tveir koddar (Two Pillows) - transcript/translation
Request from @haggadahhandittothem! Apologies for the delay. In this song, JóiPé and Króli deal with a bad relationship that has ended, featuring a random audio sample from a Fóstbræður sketch.
Icelandic transcript
Tveir koddar en ég er ennþá einn (á einn) Tómur magi, fullur haus, lítið breyst (lítið breyst) Tveir koddar en ég er ennþá einn (ennþá einn) Hlutir áttu að snúast en þeir snérust varla neitt (varla neitt)
Eitt vatnsglas Tveir mínus ei-n-n-nn Lyktin úr gullkassanum, hún eltir mig nú heim Eitt annað, mér þykir það leitt en göngutúr úr kastalanum heldur núna heim
Festu(?) mig upp Teldu upp á tíu Kastaðu í mig múrstein Skerðu úr mér nýrun Ertu að fara upp? Ertu einn í rauða bílnum? Þú veist hvar ég á heima Komdu að kyssa á mér eyrun Er einhver stakur? (?) Vill einhver vera tveir og tveir? (?) Kasta kannski á milli? Eða horfa kannski á mynd? Feitar varir, pirringur og dautt skin Hata sjálfan mig alltaf eftir klukkan fimm
Eins og hvolpur í kringum þig Gerði allt fyrir þig Nú er ég geltari Nenni engu kjaftæði Orðinn mun sterkari Allt fyrir aftan mig Hættur að hugsa um þig
Farþegi minn gaf mér bók sem ég les fyrir svefninn (?) Hélst utan um hana og slepptir ekki Söng aldrei nóg um hvað við vorum einstök blekking Síðan fékk ég nóg - sprenging
Farþegi minn gaf mér bók sem ég les fyrir svefninn (?) Hélst utan um hana og slepptir ekki Söng aldrei nóg, um hvað við vorum einstök blekking Síðan fékk ég nóg - sprenging

(Ókei)
Milljón ljótar hugsanir Engin af þeim virðist vera um þig (vera um þig) Aðeins færri góðar hugsanir Hver ein og einasta virðist vera beint til þín Komdu að tefla, ég skal kenna þér mannganginn Nei, ég meina, viltu halda vinasambandi Engan að sakast, það er ég sem held um stýrið En ég hata allar beygjur sem ég tek í þessu lífi
(Milljón ljótar hugsanir)

Transcription notes
Although I started transcribing this myself, I then discovered there are lyrics on Genius for this song, which Króli's verified artist account has contributed to (though I can't see which parts he contributed), and I cross-referenced with that. Unfortunately, it's JóiPé's parts that are really difficult here, and I can't be sure if Króli would have corrected his parts too or what. I can just about accept most of the Genius lyrics as correct, but even on repeated listens I really, really can't hear "Ertu nýkomin með bók til að lesa fyrir svefninn" as that; I hear something closer to "Farþegi minn gaf mér bók sem ég les fyrir svefninn", though it's still very slurred and unclear, and because that's my own best guess I kept it as that. The Genius lyrics also say "Frystu mig upp", but that doesn't really make any sense and I think it's "Festu mig upp". By all means tell me if JóiPé personally confirms the Genius lyrics for these lines, though.
The other lines I'm extremely not sure about are "Er einhver stakur/Vill einhver vera tveir og tveir", which definitely ends with "tveir og tveir" and I don't have a better guess for it but if the lyric isn't official from JóiPé or Króli I can definitely not vouch that that's it; I hear some garble that doesn't really sound like that but doesn't sound too unlike that either.
I distinctly hear "en göngutúr úr kastalanum" the first time, whereas the Genius lyrics have að there. The second and third time sound like að, though. I'm going to stick with the first one being en at least in the audio.
The dialogue at the end is sampled from a sketch from beloved Icelandic sketch comedy show Fóstbræður. More on the sketch in the translation notes.
English translation
Two pillows, but I'm still alone (alone) Empty stomach, head full, little changed (little changed) Two pillows, but I'm still alone (still alone) Things were supposed to get moving but they barely moved (barely moved)

Hang(?) me up Count to ten Throw a brick at me Cut out my kidneys Are you going upstairs? Are you alone in the red car? You know where I live Come kiss my ears Is anyone left over? (?) Anyone want to be two and two? (?) Throw a ball between us? Or maybe watch a movie? Fat lips, irritation and dead skin I always hate myself after five o'clock
Like a puppy around you Did anything for you Now I'm a barker No time for bullshit Gotten much stronger Everything behind me Stopped thinking about you

(JÓN GNARR: I can't believe this! You just won't stop! If you keep this up you will end up in a dumpster!)
Translation notes
I have absolutely no idea what the thing with the golden box is about, or a walk from the castle now being headed home.
JóiPé's verse asks, among other things, "Are you alone in the red car?"; the person he's talking to at least there is male, since it's einn rather than ein.
If it is "Ertu nýkomin með bók til að lesa fyrir svefninn", then that line translates to "Did you just bring a book to read before bed?" Neither seems super sensible followed with "You held it and wouldn't let go."
Króli wants to teach "you" mannganginn, or literally "the man-walk" - that's what the rules of how the pieces move in chess are called in Icelandic. He also uses the verb tefla which means to play chess, whereas I don't think English has a single verb for that.
The Fóstbræður sketch at the end features a man (played by Sigurjón Kjartansson) who brings his comforter to work and asks not to be disturbed as he takes it into an office. He tells it to be good and then stages a fight with it, in which he wrestles it to the floor only to be overwhelmed and start to call for help. A second man (Jón Gnarr) comes in because he called; Sigurjón's character sheepishly says the comforter attacked him, and without missing a beat Jón Gnarr's character grabs the comforter and pushes it against the wall, scolding it like a repeat troublemaker. So while just hearing the audio or reading the transcript you might assume he's yelling at Sigurjón's character, he's actually yelling at the comforter, which gives a whole new meaning to the bit about ending up in a dumpster. No, I have no idea how this sketch relates to this song or why they chose to sample it at the end.

Vafurlogi - Í vökulli áþján
Black Metal from Reykjavík, Iceland
Vafurlogi is rooted both spiritually and literally in the early 2000s black metal movement, as the earliest songs were written nearly twenty years ago. Like the stalwarts of that era, Vafurlogi draws inspiration not only from the staunch traditionalism of the ‘90s but also from its rebellious spirit of discovery and creation.

guys guyg uys the monkie kid soundtrack would have such a stranglehold of me if they actually released it i need the soundtrack out now
like the score is an essential part of so many of the most iconic parts of the show it adds so much emotion and gravity to the scenes
and i would honestly listen to it on its own on repeat is so good sounding with the melding of different genres of music
i know nothing about how music works but i’d really like to analyze all the the leitmotifs and sounds associated with all the characters and it would be a whole lot easier if they officially released it
anyways look at this please
tldr muisc goob pls giv eitt o us aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Tumblr media
Vit fáa at síggja hvussu hitabylgjan so uppførir seg.

Lazy Town - We Will Be Friends (Icelandic) lyrics

Sum tey flestu vita, byrjaði alt við, at Marianna Nagata legði eftir Leiv Thomsen á Facebook fyri hansara viðgerð av "Femininomen" í vikuskiftissendingini. Hon segði, at hann "hataði" slík kvinnutónleikatiltøk – ein sterk ákæra, sum skapti ein langan tráð av viðmerkingum.
Sjálvur fylgdi eg facebook tráðinum, og varð stórliga yvirraskaður tá Terji Rasmussen kimaði inn og avlýsti konsertirnar við fleiri kvinnuligum tónleikarum, tí tær høvdu tikið part við Marionnu.
Men tað, sum veruliga fekk meg at hugsa, var tá tey bæði hittust í útvarpinum. Har sá eg nakað, ið eg kenni alt ov væl aftur úr mínum egna lívi.
At síggja meg sjálvan í konfliktini
Tá eg lurtaði eftir samrøðuni millum Leiv og Marionnu, var tað sum at síggja eina spegilsmynd av konfliktum, eg sjálvur havi verið í. Virginia Satir hevur eitt modell fyri samskifti í konfliktum, sum eg eri vorðin fascinereraður av – kanska tí eg kenni meg sjálvan aftur í hesum.
Tumblr media
Eg má erliga viðganga: Eg eri ein "super-reasonable" persónur, tá eg eri undir trýsti. Akkurát sum Leivur, so spyrji eg eftir hørðum prógvum, hagtølum, og empiriskum kanningum, tá eg kenni meg kroystan. "Hevur tú nøkur føroysk tøl?" spurdi Leivur, tá Marianna nevndi kanningar úr Danmark. Eg tók meg sjálvan í at nikka, tí eg hevði sagt akkurát tað sama.
Men tað er ræðuliga lætt at goyma seg aftanfyri tøl – ein fella eg ofta eru dottin í. Við at fokusera uppá metodologiskar spurningar, kunnu vit sleppa undan at tosa um tað, sum veruliga liggur undir konfliktini: kenslur, upplivingar og virðir.
Akkurát sum Leivur (í 50'unum) og Marianna (í 20'unum) hava ymiskar mátar at skilja heimin, so upplivi eg ofta somu gjógv tá eg tosið við onnur, ið eru frá einum øðrum ættarliði.
" Uttan at skilja, at fyri hin partin, handlar tað ikki bara um at "sleppa" – tað handlar um at stríðast fyri at verða hoyrd og viðurkend.
Hvat eg læri av hesum
Henda konfliktin hevur fingið meg at reflektera yvir, hvussu eg sjálvur samskifti, serliga tá eg eri undir trýsti. Eg síggi nú, at:
Mítt "super-reasonable" samskiftismynstur er ikki altíð tað besta. Tá eg leypi beint yvir í saklig argument og tøl, missi eg menniskja aftanfyri orðini.
Tað er ikki altíð neyðugt við kanningum fyri at viðurkenna, at ein trupulleiki er til. Upplivingar hjá fólki eru eisini ein sannroynd.
Tá onkur sigur, at eg havi ein blindvinkul, er tað ikki ein persónlig átala – tað er ein møguleiki at læra nakað nýtt um meg sjálvan.
At flyta seg frá "rætt" til "betri"
Sjálvur arbeiði eg við at flyta meg frá "super-reasonable" til eitt meira balansera samskifti. Fyri meg merkir tað:
At lurta eftir royndum hjá øðrum uttan beinanvegin at krevja "objektiv" prógv
At viðurkenna, at kenslur – bæði mínar egnu og hjá øðrum – eru líka týdningarmikil sum fakta
At tora at vera persónligur og eymur, heldur enn at intellektualisera alt
At skilja, at veruligur friður kemur gjøgnum viðurkenning og fyrigeving, ikki við at sleppa málinum
Marianna og Leivur eru kanska ikki heilt komin á mál enn, men teirra samrøða hevur hjálpt mær at síggja míni egnu samskiftismynstur í einum nýggjum ljósi.
Eg haldi, at um vit leggja doyin eftir at síggja okkara egnu samskiftismynstur, og royna at fáa eina betri javnvág millum kenslur og fakta "leveling", so vænti eg, at vit megna at skapa eina betri samtalu tvørtur um ættarlið, kyn og perspektiv.
