About Project Paranoia

What exactly are you doing?

We are preserving shows and movies from China that deal with LGBTQ+ content, so they aren’t lost if they are pulled from streaming services due to increased censorship restrictions.

This is not for profit or to create a pirate cove; it’s very important to watch LGBTQ+ media on their official channels in order to show your support (please see the bottom of this page for a list of potential places to watch). We do not make any money off of these shows nor will we ever. This project is about preserving people’s work and art.

Why did you suddenly decide to do that?

In the beginning of 2021, a blog post surfaced stating that the Chinese Broadcast Agency is halting all shows based on BL novels (production and airing) and possibly pulling shows from streaming services because of increasing censorship restrictions. This claim was also mentioned in an AvenueX video (many of you know her for her amazing analyses and fan videos) where she names February as a kind of turning point. We don’t know if any of this is true – and we hope it isn’t – but there have been past incidents where shows have been removed from streaming sites and have either been altered before being republished or not been republished at all.

You know it’s a hoax, right?

Well, we honestly hope so. We know it’s a rumor for now, and nothing has been made official. The BL genre has a lot of fans and makes a lot of money, so it is not an easy – and maybe also not a probable – task to ban and censor all of it. However, shows have been pulled before.

It’s not called Project Paranoia for nothing. XD

You know that if they really decide to ban all Chinese BL content, there are bigger problems than losing access to a few shows, right?

Yes, we are very aware. Part of being in a community is doing what one can to support that community. Shows with LGBTQ+ themes mean a lot to many people. What we can do, as part of this community, is try to preserve these shows that provide a sense of happiness and connection for many of us.

How is it going so far?

Right now we are focused on preserving as many Chinese BL shows as we can. In the future we plan to upload that content to online drives, so that if a series or movie is pulled from streaming services it can still be accessed.  We will do our best to find platforms that will be accessible to all.

China’s the worst, right?

No, it isn’t. Censorship is based on governmental decisions and does not reflect the thoughts or feelings of the Chinese people. We will not tolerate any racism in connection to this blog. We will not respond to asks or messages promoting racist ideas.

How can I help?

OK, so I’ve been oddly fucked up and melancholy for the past 12 hours or so and I have no fucking clue why, apart from the fact that I missed yesterday’s thunderstorm and had a mild-moderate confrontation with my therapist this morning and confrontation always leaves me twitchy.  But the end result is that I’m just feeling very uncomfortable in my own skin today.  And I have too much to do to feel like that.  So.  Here we go.
