Clouds in Unreal engine
I wanted to choose something for this project’s technological wizardry that I could employ in the future to aid me in my pursuits. The primary challenge or issue with creating environments for video games for my portfolio as a 3D environment artist is always the sky element of the environment. We can customize a lot of things in the environment, but it becomes challenging when it comes to customizing the clouds because there aren’t many in-field adjustments and tutorials. The mood of an entire location can be radically altered by the placement of a single cloud in the sky. Because of this, I wanted to write an article about how to alter the clouds in Unreal Engine.
After deciding on my topic, I went online to gather information. As a result, I was able to compile a detailed tutorial on how to use the clouds in Unreal Engine for this article.
In Unreal Engine, there are various ways to manage the clouds.
We can provide all the necessary characteristics by generating the entire cloud we want in a different software tool and putting it into the engine, by utilizing the preset clouds and modifying them to our needs, or by using the presets but adding our own material to them. All these techniques will be covered in this article, but the main emphasis will be on how to modify the preset to meet our specific requirements.
We need to activate all the plugins needed for this project initially. Choose the volumetric plugin from the plugin menu to get started. It requests that the project be restarted after checking it. We may then access the Volumetric Engine content after that. Since this applies to all the techniques, it is better to activate it before

We may make use of some simple presets for the first method, which is to just alter the volumetric cloud material. The volumetric plugin should be activated first from the plugin settings, and then the engine and plugin content should be checked from the settings tab in the content tab. Following that, we can access all the engine and plugin content in the content folder by simply looking for or navigating to the volumetric folder. From there, we can go inside a folder called “sky” and then simply go to the material folder inside. This is a preset that the plugin provides, allowing us to alter the cloud pattern as we see fit. Drag and drop this material into the “volumetric cloud” found in the “place actor tab” required scene to test it out. Then, go to the details panel, change the material to see the preset material in action, and select the one you prefer.

I'll simply include a brief description of the technique and a picture of the blueprint because the second doesn't function in UE5. After all, it relies on tessellation, which was removed in UE5. All that is required of us is to create a new material and switch it to shading mode's subsurface setting, which is somewhat more expensive because it uses the tessellation option from the material's details menu.
Utilizing VDB (Voxel data base) in Unreal Engine is an additional strategy. I've included some helpful links to websites where we can obtain plugins and cloud VDBs for free, along with a short instructional video on how to utilize them.

And with this approach, we may move it or modify it to suit our needs by using the cloud blueprint. The engine and plugin content must be enabled in the settings tab from the content folder tab, along with the volumetric plugin. Drag "CloudMask Object" and "CloudMaskGenerator" into the scene after selecting this blueprint, going to the volumetric folder, and then selecting the "cloud compositing" option under that. To make the cloud visible, move the “cloud mask object” to the scene and scale it (by 25 in transform), then go to the volumetric folder's material, and then click "placed actor" to access the volumetric cloud, where you can drag any preset. The clouds may now be moved to suit our needs, and by establishing a material instance of the chosen material, we can modify it to suit our needs, such as the height or density of the set cloud. We may customize the cloud by adjusting each setting in the "cloud mask object."

By dragging and dropping the "Profiles PaintClouds" cloud material, we can alter the cloud's appearance but not its position. This needs to be fixed by changing the texture called "cloud mask" and replacing a different texture that can be located in the tool folder of the volumetric — cloud computing — render targets. We can now move the clouds to suit our wants because we changed this. The cloud won't immediately disappear after deletion. Still, if we go to the "cloud mask generator" and search for "render cloud" and select that, it will simply refresh the render target so the deleted cloud will disappear. We can duplicate the cloud mask object as many times as we like and delete it if we don't want it.

The blueprint "BP PaintClouds," which can be found in the Volumetric folder in the plugin content folder under "Tools," "Cloud Computing," and "Blueprints," also enables us to create paint clouds. Drag it into the scene and modify the details panel's "cloud scale km to 500 or higher" and "elevation to paint at km to 12 or greater than 10" settings as needed. All that remains is to change the game mode to "paint game mode," which can be found in the "world setting," and that mode must point to the volumetric folder of the cloud. After that, hit play, and a giant brush appears. Now we can paint the cloud to our hearts' content, and if we don't like the cloud we're painting, we can simply stop the game by pressing escape on the keyboard and selecting a different material from the preset, which will update all over the scene. If we want to completely erase the scene, all we must do is go to the paint cloud blueprint and select the clear density from the detail panel, and it will erase everything. With this, we can fully customize the clouds according to our needs for the scenery.
