ok you totally don't have to do it butttttttttttt like could we get a spare gavi spending eid w/ the reader's family for your muslim readers 👀
It would be so islamaphobic if I didn’t do this (reader is an Arabic speaker. If you don’t speak Arabic, pretend that the Arabic is whatever language you want!)
~~~
Drip Too Hard
“Pablo I’m almost ready I just need to- what are you wearing?”
Pablo fought back the urge to laugh at the look of shock-horror on your face. It didn’t seem like the appropriate time. His eyes scanned your figure, wrapped in a beautiful blue dress. The skirt and sleeves were embroidered in gold thread, weaving elaborate floral patterns that cascaded and shimmers across your body. Delicate glass beads reflected the light, throwing fractals around the room. Layers of jewelry hung delicately from your neck and wrists, chiming with every one of your movements. He was used to your face done up, but your hair flowing and the precise black lines framing your face made you a different type of captivating. You looked simply stunning. He peered down at his own attire, suddenly feeling horribly underdressed. His short sleeve shirt and khakis, despite being rather pricey, gave the impression that he was off to a beach volleyball tournament, while you looked ready to grace a runway or gala.
“…clothes? I didn’t know this was a formal event. I thought we were just going to go have brunch with your parents.”
“Right but it’s Eid brunch. Why are you in shorts??”
“Why does this brunch need us to dress like we’re going to a ball?”
Your eyes were wide as saucers, jaw on the floor. You know Gavi hadn’t been around the culture and religion for that long, but you couldn’t process this level of unawareness to his surroundings. You had dragged him across Barcelona to different markets to get fabric and beads for your dress, taking swatches to perfectly match your heels, and even asking him to bring you a specific pendant from his trip to Ibiza. You thought he might sense that the occasion called for something more formal than khaki shorts.
“Come here, Pablito.”
You said, sitting on your couch and beckoning him over. He froze in his spot a moment, realizing he was about to face a potential scolding. He walked slowly and sat beside you, careful not to crush the luxurious fabric you were wrapped in. You turned your phone screen to him, showing him a glamorous photo. Three young men, all around your age, in different colored suits. All of them brandished designer belts with large buckles, the leather matching that of their dress shoes. Three wrists displayed three gleaming watches, all embossed with a crown. Next to them, a girl stood in a beautifully embroidered dress, the glittering fabric reflecting the sunlight. The deep purple of the garment was reflected in her intricate eye makeup, and the red bottoms of her heels peaked through the drapery.
“These, Pablo, are my cousins. This is what they wore to Eid brunch with the family last year and they were called underdressed because one of them didn’t have a suit jacket. Eid is the Muslim Met Gala, and I will not be on the worst dressed list by association. Please tell me you have something else to wear.”
Gavi brought his hands to his temples, rubbing them to soothe the oncoming headache from all the information.
“Amie Paris always sends me stuff and I haven’t opened most of it. Oh and Dolce & Gabbana. You can look through and pick an outfit for me.” He suggested, watching your eyes light up and a smile erupt across your face. You tugged his wrist, encouraging him to follow you in. For the next 20 minutes, you treated him like your own personal Ken doll, dressing him up in different luxurious clothing.
You took a step back to admire your artistry. On his chest rested a crisp blue Amie dress shirt, tucked into the pants of a stunningly tailored D&G suit, hugging every muscle in an elegant and yet drool inducing manner. A black Hermes belt sat low on his hips, matching the black leather dress shoes you had forced him into (“Pablo it’s a formal event put the Dunks away!”). Matching Hermes cuff links clinked softly against the platinum Rolex on his wrist. He pushed his hair back and put on his favorite sunglasses.
“Good enough for the Eid instagram picture?” He asked, smirking as he saw you look at him like he was ambrosia from the heavens above.
“Mhm, almost too good. Let’s go before my parents get suspicious as to why we’re late.”
~
Pulling up to your parents house, Pablo parked behind the six or seven other cars by the property. The gorgeous weather had brought the Eid festivities outside, and Gavi couldn’t help but be struck by the beauty of it all. Tables in white and gold cloths held serving trays piled high with sweet and savory delicacies. Every utensil, from the plates to the silverware, was embellished with gold patterns, forming the shapes of stars and crescent moons. Your entire family was spread across the lawn: parents in the middle conversing with aunts and uncles while sipping on cold juices, and cousins ages 3 to 33 were spread about, running and laughing and of course taking photos.
“While I’m incredibly grateful that you made me change, I still feel a little out of place. I don’t know what you’re supposed to do on Eid.” He said, keeping himself at a respectable religious distance. You giggled softly before grabbing his hand, lancing your fingers between his clammy ones. “You just celebrate. Like Christmas. We’ll say hi to my parents, then we can mingle and do whatever we want until they serve the food.”
“Okay okay, one last question.”
“Yes, pablito?”
“What is that creature on the table?”
You turned around to follow Gavi’s line of sight, a loud laugh releasing itself from your throat before you could contain it. You tried to stifle it quickly as the redness creeped onto Gavi’s cheeks. You didn’t want to embarrass him.
“That’s a roasted lamb, amor. I know it looks a little strange to see a whole one on a tray like that, but it’s tradition. They might ask you to eat the head.”
“What??”
Before you could answer and quell Pablo’s fear, your mother called you over.
"حبيبتي، شو المضحك لهذه الدرجة؟ صوتك كثير عالي"
(Love, what’s so funny? You’re laughing very loudly)
Walking over, you kissed your mother on the cheek three times, hugging her close and wishing her a blessed Eid.
"ولا شيء مهم، ماما. كان خطيبي بس خايف من شكال الخاروف "
(Nothing important, mama. My fiancé was just scared by the lamb)
Pablo followed you over after a moment, shaking your father’s hand and kissing your mother on the cheeks. He thanked them for allowing him to be a part of their celebration, and your mother hugged him once again, reminding him that he was like family.
After small talk with your parents, you and Pablo moved around the function, greeting and chatting with various cousins. You laughed and talked loudly, continuing carefree. You loved watching Gavi interact with your family, culture, and religion. About 30 minutes after your arrival, you felt a tap on your shoulder.
“We’re going to take instagram pictures now, and we were wondering: can we steal your man to be in them with us?” You stated in shock at your cousins, who often payed you and your doings no mind. “Why him?” You asked, amused by how shy they seemed, like children asking if their friend could come play. “Because he’s dripping hard. Plus if we tag him we could get mad amounts of girls in our DMs.” Have to appreciate that honesty.
Gavi agreed to the photos, and stood with your male cousins to take some hot and only slightly cringey photos in front of all the expensive cars people drive to the function. Afterwards, Pablo handed his phone to your cousin, asking for pictures of the two of you.
“We have to get some together princesa. I wouldn’t look this fine without your help.”
Walking over, you wrapped an arm around him and kissed his cheek, eliciting vomit sounds from your family. “You’re pretty fine looking all on your own. Thank you, by the way, for coming with me.”
“Of course. There’s no one I’d rather spend my time with, habibti.” (My love)
Needless to say, that one phrase is what created the best photo. You were looking over your shoulder with sheer joy on your face, eyes meeting those of an excited and lovesick Pablo. He was your biggest blessing.
[ad_1] Washington Square Park is known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic characters. That was no different on Wednesday, when hundreds of Muslims filled the park to attend a morning prayer gathering for Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.People celebrate Eid by getting dressed to the nines, which is why some jokingly refer to it as the Muslim Met Gala. Many came to Washington Square Park wearing colorful traditional garments like galabeyas, grand boubous, salwar kameez, thobes, kurtas and abayas, some of which were accessorized with opulent jewels or swipes of dark kajal eyeliner. Others chose more casual clothes — like the comic Ramy Youssef, who wore a hoodie and a green baseball cap.On the morning of Eid, there are many large prayer gatherings throughout New York — in mosques, at high school football fields, on blocked-off streets. The prayer at the Lower Manhattan park, which took place beneath its Roman arch, is known for drawing a diverse crowd representative of the two billion Muslims globally. It is also known to attract notable people like Mr. Youssef as well as the comic Hasan Minhaj and the MSNBC anchor Ayman Mohyeldin, both of whom also attended.The annual Eid al-Fitr gathering at Washington Square Park was started more than 10 years ago by leaders of the Islamic Center at N.Y.U. “We were just trying to conceptualize space that could fit our growing numbers and be a memorable experience,” said the center’s director, Imam Khalid Latif, who led this year’s prayer before giving a khutbah, or sermon.“It can be very affirming knowing that in a city as large as New York, you’re not by yourself, you’re not alone,” Mr. Khalid added. “And it helps people also around us who we share space with, who are our neighbors, to know that we’re Muslim, and we are here as well.”The prayer gathering’s first attendees started arriving at 7:30 a.m. Many quickly spotted friends and relatives, greeting them with cries of, “Eid mubarak,” or “blessed Eid,” as they embraced. By 9:15 a.m., people began making their way to the homes of loved ones, an Eid tradition known as house hopping that involves serving lots of food.During the gathering, The New York Times spoke to attendees about their outfits, their favorite Eid memories and what inspired them to start the holiday at Washington Square Park.Interviews have been edited.Kojo MuharibOccupation: ArtistAge: 31Heritage: GhanaianHow did Eid inspire your outfit? I was inspired by God. God said it was going to be cloudy today. So I had to come out looking like the sun. That’s why I have on gold — I had to come and shine.Hasan MinhajAge: 38Heritage: IndianWhy did you come to this gathering? It is so spiritually moving to be with such a diverse group here at the iconic Washington Square park. To listen to Imam Khalid Latif’s khutbah, and just see the diversity in the community, is so touching and amazing.Tell me about your outfit. Eid is the one time where we put on our best, most stylish clothes. It’s a day to flex a little bit. The whole family is matching: We’re all wearing tones of black and white with embroidery.Zeinab Bakillah, Abderrahman Bakillah and Emna BakillahOccupations: Lawyer; finance associate; physicianAges: 27; 26; 29Heritage: Moroccan and TunisianHow did Eid inspire your outfits?ZEINAB BAKILLAH I’m wearing a traditional Tunisian outfit. We just dress up a little bit more on this holiday. I chose something that’s more traditional to embrace our culture.ABDERRAHMAN BAKILLAH I’d say the same thing with the galabeya. We’re half Moroccan, half Tunisian.EMNA BAKILLAH This dress belongs to my mom, who passed away five years ago. Every year on Eid, I try to wear something of hers. Every Eid, she was really good about getting the family all together.Narmeen Choudhury and Abdul Quadir ChoudhuryOccupations: Journalist; retired pharmacistAges: 43; 78Heritage: BangladeshiHow did Eid inspire your outfits?NARMEEN CHOUDHURY When I was in Bangladesh last summer, I thought about the upcoming Eid, because it’s so difficult sometimes to find outfits here in New York. I always think about something that’s reflective of our culture. And modesty, obviously, for when you’re praying.What’s your favorite Eid memory?ABDUL QUADIR CHOUDHURY I moved here in 1973. That Eid, we did the prayer in Manhattan; small, not that many Muslims. Now, so many Eid prayers.Sarah ElawadOccupation: Graphic designerAge: 27Heritage: SudaneseTell me about your outfit. My mum got it for me, and Eid is all about family. I’m missing my mum today — she’s in Qatar. On the way here, on the train, I sat next to a girl who was clearly dressed for Eid as well. I said “Eid mubarak,” and we ended up walking over here together. That’s the beautiful thing about celebrating this day, is being around other people who also celebrate.What’s your favorite Eid fashion memory? Probably this one: This is the first time that I tried to add my own touch to my outfit by bringing my own layering and fashion into it as well.Alhassane BarryOccupation: N.Y.U. studentHeritage: GuineanHow did Eid inspire your outfit? This is actually a gift from my brother. This is a Moroccan thobe. He bought it a couple of months ago, but it’s inspired me to show out and embrace my culture.What does this gathering mean to you? It means everything to me. It showcases a community that we’re still building. You can see bystanders walking by and saying: “Hey, this something that’s cool. I should look into this, probably.” So I think it just showcases that we’re not afraid to take pride in our religion.Isa HussainOccupation: DancerAge: 23Heritage: GuyaneseTell me about your outfit. So last night I actually went to Jackson Heights because there’s always a big festival there. I got this kurta there. I got the kajal for today specifically. I don’t usually do a lot of makeup or anything like that. So this is kind of like the day that I get a little bit more fun with it. I used to wrap my head a lot back in the day. But I haven’t done it in a while.What’s your favorite Eid memory? I was actually in Nazareth for Eid in 2019. And it was so beautiful. There were lights everywhere and children playing with toys.Onu MezbahOccupation: SalesAge: 32Heritage: BangladeshiHow did Eid inspire your outfit? I wanted a modern take on our heritage: a tad bit of color, a bit of a different silhouette than what everybody else is wearing. Everybody’s looking so nice. It’s very refreshing.Fatima Abba and Iman AbbaOccupation: Student; biomedical engineerAge: 19; 30Heritage: NigerianWhat’s your favorite Eid fashion memory?FATIMA ABBA Last year, I wore something that I didn’t think I would wear. I wore pink.Abdoulaye NdiayeOccupation: ProfessorAge: 35Heritage: SenegaleseTell me about your outfit. So this is a grand boubou from Senegal. It was actually my wedding evening dress as well.What’s your plan for the rest of the day? We’re going to have a brunch, then we are going to host some people at my place nearby. And then, at 2 p.m., I’m teaching. I’m giving an exam to my students. At 5:30, I’m taking a flight to go to Duke to give a lecture there.Saima AnjamOccupation: Government affairsAge: 40Heritage: PakistaniHow did Eid inspire your outfit? When I was growing up, I was always taught that you should always look your best on Eid.Why did you come to this gathering? It’s very diverse. It’s very accepting. And I wanted to be a part of that on this very special day. [ad_2] Source link
I normally put books first since I typically read more fics but this month I read a lot of books. I also decided to add my reviews of the books because I said so, really I have no other reasoning.
Fics
So Happy To Be With You Right Now by @tommokat
Harry and Louis scroll through the 2022 Met Gala looks.
Subverting Expectations @disgruntledkittenface
“Do you have a cigarette?”
If Harry thought the question would shock Louis, she would've been wrong. Louis doesn’t even look startled, even though it’s the first time one of them has spoken. She smirks at Harry in the mirror.
“We’re not supposed to do that anymore,” she says, her raspy voice full of mirth. Like she’s amused at Harry or something. “It’s bad for the paintings or whatever.”
“And you’re not a bad girl,” Harry says, turning to face Louis. She leans her hip against the counter, determined to both gain the upper hand and not think about why she wants to. “Right?”
Harry goes to the ladies’ room at the Met Gala expecting a cigarette and a break from the boredom. Instead, she gets Louis.
Stranger Coffees by @chai-hat-tea
Harry wants to start his perfect weekend by having his favourite coffee from his favourite café, but the stranger with the prettiest eyes he’s ever seen was never part of the plan. Or is he really a stranger?
Or, the cliche coffee shop AU.
It’s Been So Long by @littleroverlouis
“I don’t make it a habit of marrying boring broads,” Louis muses.
Harry snorts. ”Or staying married to us bad bitches. Cheers to my favorite ex-wife!”
The pair toasts each other with their icy margaritas.
Silver Foxes Louis and Harry have a long, complicated relationship that is hotter than a jetstream burning up. What happens if they roll and they roll 'til they change their luck?
Rimadon by @uhoh-but-yeah-alright
Zayn books a private session with Louis the day after Eid al-Fitr to keep his own personal celebration going.
To Sleep, Perchance to Ream by @uhoh-but-yeah-alright
Louis has never minded that Harry tends to go to sleep earlier than her. But the nights when Harry signals she'd like Louis to...wake her when she comes to bed are Louis' favorite.
Harry, You’re No Good Alone by @cinemastan
“Can I do anything for you, Daddy?” He asked sweetly, giving Louis big eyes.
“No, baby. Did enough just letting me please you.” Louis gently tucked a curl behind Harry’s ear. “Did you want any breakfast?”
Harry couldn’t help but frown. “I-what?”
I'd Walk Through Fire For You (Just Let Me Adore You) by @neondiamond
Firefighter Louis is having an uneventful shift at the station when a call comes in about a devastating fire in a nearby apartment complex. All of his worst nightmares become reality when he realises it’s where Harry, his best friend who he’s had a relentless crush on for years, lives, and that said best friend is stuck inside among the flames.
Books
You and Me by Tal Bauer
A single dad’s romance/bisexual awakening/friends to lovers
This book destroyed me in the best way. The dad’s were keeping their relationship a secret from their respected kids so I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and when it did, wow! I was not expecting the twist. I loved Luke’s bisexual awakening. Luke and Landon’s friendship was amazing to witness and I loved watching them realize their friendship wasn’t ever just friendship.
Funny Feelings by Tara DeWitt
Fake dating/boss and employee/single father
This was pretty cute, I’m not a big fan of stand-up comedians so why I decided to read a book about stand-up comedians is beyond me. I liked the relationship between Farley and Hazel, it was really sweet from the beginning. Overall it was okay, didn’t regret reading it at least.
214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion
a psychological thriller
So it’s fitting her last name is McQuestion because wow do I have some McQuestion’s. I was able to guess everything that was going to happen which was such a bummer when it comes to a psychological thriller. I loved the premise of the book and I would love to know why the author chose certain plot lines that she did. The villain had good reasoning and I wish the author would have given her one more push to her madness.
The Caretaker by Emily Shiner
a psychological thriller
I read this right after 214 Palmer Street because I was desperate for a thrill and it delivered! It gave me the creeps the entire read and even afterwards when I was telling my husband about it. I loved that each character’s flaws. Reading Paul’s spiral was seamless and creepy. The ending was frustrating but in a good way. This book will stay with me when I’m home alone for sure.
One Percent of You by Michelle Gross
enemies to lovers/single mother romance
The best part of this book was when Elijah steals Lucy’s chips in the grocery store aisle and hisses at her. It’s a cute read and Elijah’s protectiveness over Hadley and her children was sweet. I wish there seemed to be more of a inner fight with Elijah and deciding to be a family man. Overall it was a cute read, if not a little forgettable.
Lilacs and Leather by Thora Wood
a pack bond abo
I loved this book so much. I don’t go into reading het abo with a lot of high hopes since I’m not a huge traditional abo lover. I love the bond the pack has though- they all have different sexualities and different kinds of love which I really appreciated. I found myself yelling at a few of the characters but they really developed through the second book. The ending of this one had me immediately downloading the second and reading as quickly as I could.
Lavender and Lightening by Thora Wood
sequel to Lilacs and Leather. a pack bond abo
I was on the edge of my seat through most of this book. I loved the development of Lydia and Lex’s relationship, that was probably my favorite part of the book. I’m eagerly awaiting the third part.
Praise by Sara Cate
age gap/taboo relationship, boss/employee, bdsm
Seeing as how this book is about the relationship between a father and his son’s ex-girlfriend, I expected a back and forth on deciding if the relationship was worth it to pursue. However, some of it was irritating to keep reading. The sex in this was super hot and I loved Charlotte’s sexual awakening and confidence she gained. I also love the acceptance from Emerson and Charlotte’s trans little sister Sophie.
Eyes on Me by Sara Cate
age gap/taboo relationship, bdsm, grumpy and sunshine characters
This isn’t a direct sequel to Praise but it features overlapping characters. The male lead in this co owns the bdsm club Emerson runs in Praise. I didn’t mind reading the step brother and step sister romance, I knew what I was getting into when I began it. The most unrealistic plot point was their parents approval. I totally understand the want of a happy ending but I would almost rather them have had to run away together. Just like the first book in the series, the sex was hot and overall it was alright.
Love In The City by Jen Morris
single dad, neighbors, enemies to lovers
By the time I wanted to put this book down and not finish it, I was a hundred pages from the end so I stuck it out. I understand why the author used the single dad trope but it was pointless at the end of the day. The kid was forgotten about half the time and the female lead hardly interacted with the kid. I loved Alex’s backstory and wish the author did more with the relationship with her parents. Michael was lowkey toxic and I actually dislike that they were together in the end.
Owned By a Sinner by Michelle Heard
an Irish mafia romance
I enjoyed the majority of this book. The sex was hot, the Romeo and Juliet element was great. The sexual assault wasn’t unnecessary to the plot, which sometimes I find authors adding for the hell of it. I liked Liam and Kiara’s relationship and the trust she felt in him. For once I wish this wasn’t a standalone and the book hadn’t ended the way it did.
Love Language by Reece Morrison
gay bdsm age gap/dom/sub relationship
I loved the inclusivity of this book but not much else to be honest. The sex scenes were hot and I liked Marco’s Daddy Dom persona. I couldn’t connect with the characters like I hoped I would. If I met them out and about I wouldn’t want to be friends with them. Overall the writing wasn’t bad, I just couldn’t connect.
Love Lessons by Reece Morrison
gay bdsm/age play relationship
Admittedly, I only read this because I am currently trying to write an age play fic. Again, I love the inclusivity of the characters- deaf characters, ace characters, gender fluid characters. Some of the sex scenes were hot but overall I found myself getting tired of one of the main characters. I understood their backstory and what led them to be who they are but I honestly just didn’t like them very much. Like the first book in the series, I didn’t mind the writing. I just couldn’t connect.
Tangled Vows by Anna Stone
lesbian fake dating au
It was okay, honestly. The most remarkable part was that they were woman. The sex scenes were okay and I liked some of the side plots but unfortunately they weren’t explored a lot.
Montana Daddies Series by Laylah Roberts
dom/sub, age play romances
Alright listen, I debated on whether I really wanted to admit to reading this series but here I am lmao I am only on book 4 but I’m going to read them all so I’m including them in this months list even though I haven’t finished. Each book is a with a different man so they are all a little different but the premise is the same. Damsel in distress doesn’t realize she is a Little and she meets the man who happens to be a Daddy Dom and shows her her true self and they live together on Sanctuary Ranch where they live and work. Overall, the writing is decent. The plots can be good but there are some elements of dubious consent that the author never addresses. For example, the daddy dom’s somehow knowing the woman is a Little and convincing her to give it a try. It’s like, not great. The woman gives in and there are safe words in place but sometimes it feels icky. Am I going to keep reading the series? Unfortunately. In my defense, it’s part research part curiousity.
Ah can you tell me more about Ramadan and what halal food is?
Well at the end of Ramadan, the last ten days we try to focus extra on giving others because they are considered extremely holy days.
At the last days we also give out also known as Sadaqat al-Fitr or Zakat al-Fitrah, is an obligatory form of alms-giving required of every able Muslim at the end of Ramadan.
Then month official ends when the crescent moon 🌙 is in the sky announcing the end of Ramadan and the first day of Eid.
Eid al fitr starts the first day after Ramadan and it’s a just a celebration and breaking our fasts for the first time after Ramadan.
We exchange gifts and congrats each other for making it through the month and a new year.
Here it’s pretty common to give out money, especially to kids, young adults take money too but not as common as the younger ones.
For example I made little goody bags with candy and money inside for the kids.
Oh also we shop a lot for those days of Eid, during Ramadan usually.
I like to call it our mini met gala lol.
As for hala food, it basically means meat that is killed in an Islamic way and be blessed, you can find halal mean labeled in supermarkets and some restaurants would have halal printed on their menus and such.
Candies as well, some candies contain animal fat or such and that animal is not killed in a halal way so that’s why we should always check ingredients if we’re not in a Islamic based country.
