I am so frustrated by my local community's attitude towards animal welfare right now. The most horrific case of animal abuse potentially worldwide happened in my direct locale. And while it's the most vile and terrible case, these crimes were committed by an incredibly disturbed individual and it does not reflect some kind of wider problem. But this terrible – truly terrible – case has meant that a certain subset of people have been pushed hardcore to the right and are now advocating for a focus on punitive measures for animal welfare violations of any kind – with no consideration for the social injustices that lead to the most common welfare issues with animals.
My community is suffering income inequality, cost of living crisis, homelessness and more than a century of racial injustice. And in response, the largely white population has lurched back to the right in a knee-jerk reaction to an insufficient centre-left government, with the total focus on CRIME in big bold letters. And now because of this Adam Britton case we are dealing with extreme paranoia around animal welfare and all these things melding together means that we've now got people calling for extremely harsh penalties for problems that are fundamentally systemic and rooted in lack of resources, money and education.
I want to shake all these people and say, how can you realistically believe that the humans "responsible" for the condition of a suffering dog are not also suffering in some comparable way? How do you not understand? How do you not see the reality out there that animal welfare is intrinsically tied to human welfare?
#the world is a terrible place#I fully agree that we need stronger laws related to the crimes Britton committed#but we do not need to focus on harsher penalties for animal welfare in general#when I can guarantee that the people that would be affected most by this are our community's most vulnerable#we should be focusing on how to get resources more widely available to people who need them#I'm really sad about this latest dog as well#but do these people care about the people that die daily in our community because of extremely poor human welfare?#like are you kidding me?#where did this dog come from?#how did it come to be infected with mange and ehrlichiosis?#do you think it's because the people “responsible” made a conscious choice to neglect this animal?#or is it more likely that they were struggling to meet the human needs they are responsible for?#I hate this world#I hate that people see terrible things and instead of pointing at the true cause would rather cause other suffering#and I do NOT recommend looking into the Britton case#I don't mean this to sound ~intriguing~ it's honestly the worst thing of all time#it's the worst animal abuse I've ever heard of ever#do not look it up#it all happened here#within 50km of me#it's horrific

Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum)
Distribution: Found in Mexico and the eastern half of the United States, excluding the northernmost states. Has also been reported outside of its range in southern Ontario and northern South America.
Habitat: Typically lives in second-growth forests with thick underbrush, but can also be found in forest transition zones.
Diet: Endoparasitic generalist; feeds on the blood of its hosts. Most common hosts include white-tailed deer, ground-nesting birds and large mammals such as cattle, horses and humans.
Description: The lone star tick, like other ticks, is a bloodsucker which attaches itself to a host for a period of time as it engorges itself with blood. This particular species can remain attached to its host for up to seven days, often going unnoticed due to its painless bite. It usually hunts for hosts in thick underbrush and tall grass; it will lie in wait on blades of grass or leaves with its legs outstretched and, in response to stimuli such as heat, vibration or carbon dioxide production, it will climb onto a passing host.
The lone star tick can act as a vector for diseases in humans, especially those bacterial in nature. It's the main vector for human monocytic ehrlichiosis and granulocytic ehrlichiosis, rabbit fever and rash illnesses. Due to the presence of alpha-gal, a carbohydrate found in mammalian cell membranes, in its saliva, bites can rarely cause a person to develop serious allergic reactions to consuming meat and meat products.

Web searches have always been super unhelpful and the vets have had no idea so I’m throwing this question about my dog’s behavior out into to the tumblr abyss— (warning, mentions vomiting very briefly)
Sometimes, my dog signals to me that he wants to go outside and eat grass. He does this by coughing/gagging at me until I let him outside where he proceeds to frantically eat grass. This happens maybe once a month at most and he’s only thrown it up maybe twice in his life. Once he’s decided he’s eaten enough, he happily runs back and is totally fine…the vet said that if there aren’t any other symptoms, then he’s probably good and they have no real idea as to why he would be doing this. His bloodwork/fecal/etc have always been great, though he used to test positive for Ehrlichiosis (he probably had, was treated for, and recovered from it before we adopted him).
My only guess is that maybe he hates when he has a tickle in his throat or something stuck in his teeth and tries to get it out this way :’D honestly though, I have no idea. Any ideas as to why he does this and/or is it a concern?

The only reason this dog who came in today didn't have Lyme disease is simply cause it's not regionally found here. He had all the rest- Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Heartworm. His blood ran like water, alive at 9% PCV and 20 platelets. He had twenty ticks in ever square inch of his body.
I have no idea how he was hanging on.

Some disease specific info to keep in mind:
- ticks need to be attached for at least 4 hours to transmit Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, and Tularemia
- 4-6 hours of attachment for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
- 24-48 hours of attachment for Anaplasmosis
^a good resource for tick ID and range of specific species.
Also, please please please have your dogs and cats on flea/tick prevention year round. The ground is thawing earlier and earlier every year. Ticks can start coming out as soon as temperatures reach 40 degrees.
I'm trying to write a post about tick safety and avoiding tick bites, but a lot of the info on websites is like "Avoid going in the woods, in plants, and where there are wild animals" and "Activities like hiking and gardening can put you at risk" and I'm like thanks! This is worthless!
As ticks and tick borne illnesses are expanding their range, I think it's important for people to be educated about these things, and I think it's especially important to give people actual advice on how to protect themselves instead of telling them to just...avoid the natural world
Rough draft version of Tick Advice:
Ticks don't jump down on you from trees, they get on you when you brush against grass, brush, bushes etc.
Ticks get brought to an area when they get done feeding from an animal and fall off them. In the USA, the main tick-bringing animal is deer, but I've seen plenty ticks on feral cats and songbirds.
Ticks get killed when they dry out so drier areas with more sunlight are less favorable to ticks.
The above is useful for figuring out whether an area is likely to have lots of ticks, and how vigilant you have to be in that area.
Wear light-colored, long pants outside. Tuck your pants into your socks, and tuck your shirt into the waist of your pants. Invest in light, breathable fabrics idc
IMMEDIATELY change out of your outside clothes when you come back from a tick-prone area, wash them, and dry them on high heat to kill any ticks that might be stuck on.
Shower and check yourself for ticks after coming inside. Hair, armpits, and nether regions in particular. You can use a handheld mirror or rely on touch; an attached tick will feel like a bump kinda like a scab
While you're outside, you can just periodically check for ticks by running your hands down your legs and checking visually to see if anything is crawling on your clothes. Light colors make them easy to spot, and they don't move fast.
Combing through each others' hair to check for creepy crawly critters is a time-honored primate ritual and is not weird. When hiking, bring a friend who will have your back when you feel something on your neck and need to know if it's sweat or a tick
If you're careful, you can usually catch ticks before they bite you, but if one does bite you, it's not the end of the world. Since tickborne diseases are different regionally i suspect this advice will differ based on where you are, but the important thing is remove the tick with tweezers (DON'T use butter, a lit match, or anything that kills the tick while it's still attached, please) and contact a doctor to see what to watch for. Most illnesses you can catch from ticks are easily treatable if you recognize them when symptoms first appear

How is dog's life affected by ticks? Pet parents, be aware!
Ticks can significantly impact a dog's life by causing various health issues. They can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis, leading to symptoms like fever, lethargy, joint pain, and loss of appetite. Additionally, ticks can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and anemia due to blood loss.
Home Remedies for Tick Removal:
Apple Cider Vinegar: Combine equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on your dog's coat, avoiding the eyes and ears. This can help repel ticks due to the strong smell and acidity, which ticks dislike.
Lemon Juice: Boil a sliced lemon in water, let it cool, and use the lemon-infused water as a natural tick repellent by spraying it on your dog's fur. The citric acid in lemon juice acts as a natural deterrent for ticks.
Essential Oils: Certain essential oils, such as lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus, can deter ticks. Dilute a few drops in a carrier oil and apply it to your dog's collar or a bandana. These oils have strong scents that repel ticks.
Why Home Remedies May Not Always Be Effective: Home remedies can provide temporary relief and prevention, but they may not be effective in eliminating severe tick infestation or preventing tick-borne diseases. The concentration and application of natural ingredients can vary, leading to inconsistent results. Additionally, some home remedies may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive dogs.
Petterati Tick Shampoo: If home remedies do not work, try tick Petterati Tick Shampoo for Dogs, which is completely free from parabens and sulfates. This Dog shampoo is designed to be gentle on your dog's skin while effectively removing and repelling ticks. It offers a reliable and consistent solution for managing tick infestations, ensuring your dog remains healthy and comfortable.

The Importance of Afoxolaner for Dog's Health
Dogs are more than just pets; they are cherished members of the family. As dog owners, we take responsibility for their well-being, providing them with love, care, and ensuring their health. This includes protecting them from harmful parasites like fleas and ticks, which can cause significant discomfort and even transmit diseases.
Afoxolaner is a powerful weapon in the fight against these pests. It is a key ingredient in many flea and tick medications for dogs, playing a vital role in maintaining their health. This article will explore what Afoxolaner is, how it works, and why it is essential for keeping your dog safe and healthy.
What is Afoxolaner?
Afoxolaner is an insecticide and acaricide, which means it kills insects and mites. It belongs to a class of drugs known as isoxazolines. Manufactured by pharmaceutical companies like Qingmu Pharmaceutical , Afoxolaner API is used to formulate flea and tick medications for dogs.
How Does Afoxolaner Work?
Fleas and ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of animals. They can cause a variety of problems for dogs, including:
Itching and irritation: Fleas and ticks have bites that can cause significant itching and irritation for dogs. This can lead to excessive scratching, which can damage the skin and lead to secondary infections.
Allergic reactions: Some dogs are allergic to flea bites, which can cause a severe skin reaction known as flea allergy dermatitis. This condition can cause intense itching, redness, and hair loss.
Disease transmission: Fleas and ticks can transmit a number of diseases to dogs, including Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis. These diseases can be serious and even life-threatening.
Afoxolaner works by targeting the nervous system of fleas and ticks. It disrupts the flow of chloride ions into their nerve cells, which leads to paralysis and ultimately death of the parasites. This mode of action is effective against both fleas and ticks at all stages of their life cycle, from eggs and larvae to adult fleas and ticks.
Why is Afoxolaner Important for Dog's Health?
Afoxolaner is essential for dog's health for several reasons:
Effective parasite control: Afoxolaner is highly effective in eliminating and controlling flea and tick infestations. Regular use of Afoxolaner can prevent these pests from establishing themselves on your dog and causing the problems mentioned earlier.
Prevents discomfort and allergic reactions: By killing fleas and ticks, Afoxolaner helps to prevent the itching and irritation that these parasites cause. This can significantly improve your dog's quality of life, especially for dogs with flea allergies.
Reduces the risk of disease: Afoxolaner helps to protect your dog from contracting diseases transmitted by fleas and ticks. This can help to keep your dog healthy and prevent serious health problems.
Safe and veterinarian-recommended: Afoxolaner is a safe and well-tolerated medication for most dogs. It is clinically proven and recommended by veterinarians for the prevention and control of flea and tick infestations.
How to Use Afoxolaner?
Afoxolaner is available in various formulations, including chewable tablets, topical solutions, and collars. The best form for your dog will depend on their age, weight, and lifestyle. It is crucial to consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate dosage and form of Afoxolaner for your dog. They can also advise you on the frequency of administration, which typically ranges from once a month to every three months.
Conclusion
Afoxolaner is a powerful tool for protecting your dog from fleas and ticks. By effectively eliminating these pests, Afoxolaner helps to ensure your dog's health and well-being. If you have any concerns about fleas or ticks on your dog, talk to your veterinarian about Afoxolaner and other flea and tick prevention options. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. By taking steps to protect your dog from parasites, you can help them live a long and healthy life.

Exploring Fleas and Ticks in Dogs: Prevention and Protection Made Simple
Every dog owner dreads the sight of their furry friend scratching incessantly. The culprits? Fleas and ticks. These pesky parasites can cause more than just discomfort; they can lead to serious health issues for your pet. Understanding what fleas and ticks are, how they affect your dog, and the best ways to prevent them—including the use of flea and tick sprays and shampoos—is essential for keeping your pet happy and healthy.
What are Fleas and Ticks?
Fleas are small, wingless insects that thrive on the blood of mammals and birds. Their incredible jumping ability allows them to move quickly between hosts, making them a common and stubborn pest for dogs. Fleas can cause intense itching, allergic reactions, and even transmit tapeworms.
Ticks are arachnids, closely related to spiders. These blood-sucking parasites attach themselves to their host, feeding on blood and potentially transmitting serious diseases such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis.
The Dangers of Fleas and Ticks
Skin Problems: Flea bites can lead to severe itching, rashes, and even allergic reactions, while ticks can cause localized skin infections.
Blood Loss: Heavy flea infestations can result in anemia, particularly dangerous for puppies.
Disease Transmission: Ticks are notorious for transmitting diseases that can have long-term health impacts on dogs.
Recognizing Flea and Tick Infestations
Persistent Scratching: Dogs with fleas or ticks will scratch, bite, or lick their skin more than usual.
Visible Parasites: Fleas look like tiny, fast-moving specks, while ticks appear as small, spider-like creatures attached to the skin.
Skin Irritation: Look for red, inflamed areas, hair loss, or scabs where your dog has been scratching.
Preventing Fleas and Ticks
Regular Grooming: Brush your dog’s coat frequently to check for signs of fleas and ticks. Using a flea and tick comb can help catch these pests early.
Flea and Tick Spray: A flea and tick spray can be an effective preventative measure. These sprays can kill existing parasites and provide a barrier against future infestations. Always choose a product that is safe for your dog and follow the instructions carefully.
Flea and Tick Shampoo: Bathing your dog with a flea and tick shampoo can help eliminate these pests on contact. These shampoos not only kill fleas and ticks but also soothe irritated skin. Regular use can help prevent re-infestation.
Preventative Treatments: There are various preventative treatments available, such as topical solutions, oral medications, and collars. Consult with your vet to determine the best option for your dog.
Clean Living Environment: Keeping your home and yard clean is crucial. Regular vacuuming and washing your dog’s bedding can help remove flea eggs and larvae. Treating your yard with pet-safe insecticides can also help reduce the risk of tick infestations.
Routine Vet Visits: Regular check-ups with your veterinarian can help detect any issues early and keep your dog protected year-round.
How to Use Flea and Tick Products
Flea and Tick Spray: Spray your dog’s coat thoroughly, avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth. Ensure the spray reaches the skin for maximum effectiveness. Reapply as directed, especially after baths or swimming.
Flea and Tick Shampoo: Wet your dog’s coat, apply the shampoo, and work it into a lather. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Use the shampoo regularly as part of your dog’s grooming routine.
Conclusion
Fleas and ticks are more than just an itchy annoyance—they can cause significant health problems for your dog. By staying vigilant and using preventative measures like flea and tick sprays and shampoos, you can protect your furry friend from these unwelcome guests. Regular grooming, a clean environment, and routine vet visits are all part of a comprehensive strategy to keep your dog happy, healthy, and parasite-free.
