When I was little my grandmother told me that when I grew up, I was going to travel the world, meet interesting people and have great adventures. I trusted her with all my heart and believed every word she said. I don't know why or how she decided what she wanted for me, but I am soooo grateful to her for planting the seed of wanderlust within me. Last month I had the pleasure of meeting a friend's gamma that I've heard a lot about over the years. This week a friend's grandmother passed away and it was the 6th anniversary of the death of another friend's dadi. In talking about their grandmothers, each friend's recollection helped to remind me of the magical role grandmothers can play in our lives if we're lucky. Hopefully, my niece will feel the same way about her MaJean that I feel about Effie. Cherish them while they're here, listen to their stories and words of wisdom and most of all let them project their hopes and desires on to you. Today, I'm heading home from The Maldives, a string of islands in the Indian Ocean I knew nothing about as a child, but because my grandmother told me that I was going to travel the world it's a place I expected to visit.
