LITERACY QUOTE OF THE DAY
Tumblr media
Thursday, April 25, 2024
“The gulf between science and education has been harmful. A look at the science reveals that the methods commonly used to teach children are inconsistent with basic facts about human cognition and development and so make learning to read more difficult than it should be. They inadvertently place many children at risk for reading failure. They discriminate against poorer children who could have become successful readers. Many children who do manage to learn to read under these conditions wind up disinterested in the activity. In short, what happens in classrooms isn’t adequate for many children, and this shows in the quality of this country’s literacy achievement. Reading is under pressure for other reasons, but educational theories and practices may accelerate its marginalization.” – Mark Seidenberg

In this exploration, we delve into the key principles and differences to shed light on the question of which educational approach might be considered "better."

Since I was in high school, I already knew that I wanted to become a teacher in the future. I have always looked up to my teachers, especially in English. I admire them because they always make the English subject great, fun, and pleasurable. Not only did they teach us the English subject, but they also made us love the subject. Due to the intense love for this subject, I even played 'schooling' with my siblings, and pretended that I had my own classroom making quizzes for them to answer. Since then, I already loved being in charge.
It is important to support critical thinking and reasoning, so that students are encouraged to truly engage and use their minds. We all know that education is important because it gradually prepares our students for their future career. As a future educator, I will guide my students towards full maximization and utilization of their minds. I want my future students to understand the importance of education, and I hope to serve as a role model to them. I will make sure that my teaching strategies will be effective and inspiring, and my dedication and passion will always shine through. More than all the teachings that they could get from the textbook, I also want my students to have a positive outlook in life. Then, after all the meetings and discussions, when it is time to finally part ways, I want them to walk away with the same eagerness and drive to learn.
Educational Encouragement Philosophy means I will encourage my students to love and enjoy not just the subject, but also Education as a whole. For the students who will struggle in understanding a lesson in my class, I will surely provide a one-on-one discussion for them to better understand the lesson.

Philosophy is a term derived from two Greek words, ‘Philos” means love and ‘Sophia’ means wisdom. It means love for knowledge or passion for learning. As of today, there are a lot of educational philosophies and are used as a guide for teaching the students. There are two classifications which are the Traditional and Contemporary Philosophies.
Traditional philosophy focuses on the traditional method of teaching a child wherein a teacher focuses on the subject content and not to the student’s needs. It focuses on WHAT a teacher should teach to his/her students. Under Traditional Philosophy are Perennialism, Essentialism, Idealism, and Realism.
Perennialism focus on teaching ideas that are everlasting, to seek enduring truths which are constant, not changing. Their aim of education is to ensure that students acquire understandings about the great ideas of Western civilization. The curriculum focuses on attaining cultural literacy, stressing students’ growth in enduring disciplines. Their methods of teaching are oral exposition, lecture, and explication.
Essentialism is somewhat similar to Perennialism but Essentialist accept the idea that this core curriculum may change. They believe that there is a common core of knowledge that needs to be transmitted to students in a systematic, disciplined way. It should focus on facts rather than the other needs of a child.
Idealist aims to develop and discover each child’s skills and full moral excellence in order to better serve society. They focus on literature, history, philosophy, and religion. Their methods of teaching focus on handling ideas through lecture, discussion, and Socratic dialogue.
Realism is the theory that holds the existence of objects is real. The existence of objects is independent of knowledge. It is concerned with the existence of things. They emphasize the subject matter of the physical world, particularly science and mathematics. Teaching methods focus on mastery of facts and basic skills through demonstration and recitation.
Contemporary philosophy wherein the child’s interest are regarded as the main factor in deciding what should be taught, and instrumental and practical knowledge is given a place in the curriculum. Under the Contemporary Philosophy are Pragmatism, and Progressivism.
For Pragmatist, education should be about life and growth. Truth is not absolute, but changes according to time, ideal and place. Their teaching methods focus on hands-on problem solving, experimenting, and projects, often having students work in groups. Pragmatists believe that learners should apply their knowledge to real situations through experimental inquiry.
Progressivists believe that education should focus on the whole child, rather than on the content or the teacher. The learner is a problem solver and thinker who makes meaning through his or her individual experience in the physical and cultural context. They aim to develop learners into becoming enlightened and intelligent citizens of a democratic society and to teach learners so they may live fully now. The methods of teaching that they are using are experiential methods and hands-on-minds like field and thought-provoking games.

In the present scenarios or changing of the time, how could you prepare the relevancy of education to suit the needs of the learners?
In the dynamic revolution of social norm.  Learners’ are becoming varied and constantly changing accordingly.  With this situation, curriculum building and industrial relevancy towards manpower and functional literacy should remain still as an embedded culture in developing educational landscape.  This is because the consideration of general nation building is still the general aim of education.  To produce competent, skillful, and functional citizens are which country always aims to produce to improve the economic growth, but only through proper educational landscaping of curriculum and implementation of quality educational system is the key of revolutionizing the current state.  It is therefore, to dance with the changing or dynamic norm is the key and still inculcate the general aim of nation building.

My Educational Philosophy
I believe wholeheartedly that all students, regardless of ability or disability, creed, race, culture, gender, or socioeconomic status, are deserving of a high quality education. As a special educator, my focus is on the abilities that my students possess. I firmly believe that it is from this positive approach to special education that the most impact can be made. Being a special education teacher is an incredible opportunity to make a long lasting and positive impact. Not only do I strive to make an impact in students’ academic success, but also strive to make in impact in students’ futures by teaching them skills and tools for a lifetime of independence and success. One of the most important elements of my pedagogy is to ensure that I provide young scholars the tools that they will need to be able to navigate this often complex world, with the hope that someday these young scholars will evolve into bright men and women who will help to impact our world in the most positive and brilliant ways. With the right accommodations, a knowledgeable and dedicated teacher, and proper support systems, students with special needs can achieve great achievement.
I would describe academic success, beyond grades received on a report card or standardized test score, as the faith and determination to overcome challenges, as well as a lifelong hunger for learning. Academic success is having a positive attitude and confidence, even in the face of adversity. I believe that all children in all schools can be high achieving if given the right tools, and all children in this world are deserving of a high quality education. I believe classrooms where different cultures and languages are embraced and respected.  Embracing all races, dialects, and cultures in a classroom is necessary to create a collaborative and meaningful learning environment built on trust.   It is my job to work in the community and with parents to let parents know that their child is cared for, and that parents are a full partner in their child’s education. I will always strive to be compassionate, collaborative, innovative, and impact the lives of as many students as I can while in the education field.

Assignment for an Education Course
So I was doing this assignment for my education course about assessing what I believe my educational philosophy about teaching and learning is... here is what I came up with, and I find it quite interesting!
Philosophy about teaching and learning:
My philosophy about teaching and learning is an interesting one. I believe that teaching and learning coincide with one another. You cannot learn without teaching. Teaching is the way in which you learn. Yes, one may understand the material taught by the teacher, but it is the active participation in the material that allows the student to learn. I have had this philosophy for many years now because I have experienced it. With my desire to be a teacher, I did something I called "practice teaching". It was the way in which I studied. I would listen and take notes about what I did in class the day of then at home I would teach myself the lesson again like I was the teacher teaching my students. This is how I studied and I learned from it because I was reiterating what my teacher had taught and I was reviewing what I did not understand so that I could go back to my teacher, ask a question, and understand the material. Another time this occurs is during my time as a religious education teacher, or catechist. When I was in the program as a student, I felt as if I did not learn much. However, when I started to teach in the program, I learned more about my faith than I ever would have thought possible. It was that ability for me to teach the material that allowed me to learn.
Students do not learn just by listening to a lecture in a class from the teacher. They learn through active participation with the material. Lecturing does not allow for intellectual development. When a teacher gives a lecture, it is telling students information, but does not allow for the students to process it. The active participation in the class, however, allows for increased learning in the course material.
Thoughts anyone?!?!
