A wonderful painting by Edouard Detaille (1848-1912) France's finest military painter, closely followed by his friend Alphonse de Neuville (1835-1885).

1812 Smolensk, Napoleon and troops - Eduard Detaille

I believe from the helmet and breastplate in the ground from a Russian cuirassier this scene is from a battle against the Russians. The character in the green coat must be Murat and the other marshal is obviously Ney. I discarded Heilsberg and Jena as these marshals didn’t coincide in the field in either battle, so it’s the 1812 campaign. Smolensk in Augustt is the most likely choice due to the dry grass

Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille (French; October 5, 1848 – December 23, 1912) was a French academic painter and military artist noted for his precision and realistic detail. He was regarded as the "semi-official artist of the French army".
