Shine Bright
Pairing:Â Bucky Barnes x Star!Reader
Word Count:Â ~4k
Warnings:Â fluff, angst, being kidnapped and almost killed, but then fluff again
Summary:Â Hydra wants to reign eternally, and the best way to do that is to eat a falling star's heart. They knock you out of orbit but didn't expect the Avengers to find you first.
Squares Filled:Â stars (2021) for @buckybarnesbingo
Authorâs Note:Â This takes place during or after FATWS, but I've made John evil, and everyone who died post-Endgame is alive and well.
I am absolutely in love with the movie "Stardust", so I decided to base this story on that! The picture down below DOES NOT represent the reader at all, I just wanted to showcase the movie.

x
The sky above is still and peaceful. There isnât a cloud in sight that allows visibility to whoever looks up at it. John Walker looks through the telescope and positions it on the star Hydra is targeting. If he wasnât on a mission right now, heâd appreciate the stars shining brightly for their human audience.
âJohn, is everything in position?â
âOn my end. What about yours?â
John looks at his coworker who is in charge of the missile they plan on using for this mission. The man tweaks the numbers and aligns them with the correct star.
âWeâre ready.â
All eyes turn to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. She is in charge of this whole operation under the assumption this is for the CIA. She sits at the large desk in the middle of the room, leans back, and rests her hands in her lap.
âFire away, gentlemen.â
John and his coworker turn the machine on and launch the missile at the star. John rushes over to the telescope and watches as it flies into the sky, breaks off into tiny pieces, and zooms straight into the heart of the star. Instead of blowing it up like most missiles do, it knocks the star off its orbit and sends it straight down to Earth. Whatever John is seeing through the telescope, everyone can see on the monitors in the room so that Valentina can see whatâs going on.
Everyone watches it fall straight to Earth to a place they donât know. They canât predict the crash site for something as big as a star but it wonât be hard to track it down. Once they figure out where it is, theyâll have so much fun dissecting it for what they truly need it for.
It was Tonyâs idea that the entire team kick back and relax after a hard working week. Sam and Wanda brought out the board games that can account for a lot of people since everyone lives at the compound. The only one not here is Thor but thatâs because he has duties to complete on Asgard.
âOkay, this time, donât cheat,â Tony says to Sam.
âHey, that was one time and I was trying to get Steve.â
The game theyâre playing is Cards Against Humanity, something they all love to playâadult edition. Whatâs a good night in with alcohol and friends if not for an inappropriate game?
âBucky, you in or not?â
âYeah, pass me some cards.â
With everyone on board, the game can get started. The first few rounds were hilarious and the next couple was causing a lot of people to drink. Tony loves to put a spin on his games. If he can get people to drink, then a lot of people are getting drunk. By the tenth round, everyone is relaxed and willing to kick things up a notch.
Tony brings out a Truth or Dare drinking game when something bright lights up the night sky.
âWhat the hell is that?â Clint asks.
Everyone gets up and gathers around the window to watch it fall to the ground. It lands not far from the Avengerâs Compound but far enough to where they canât see it.
âTony, Sam, letâs check it out,â Steve says seriously.
Tony and Sam get suited up while Steve fetches his shield. Steve catches a ride with Tony to travel two hours from the Compound in Madison County. There is a big crater on the ground from the impact of the white light, and the three men tread carefully over to it. Steveâs shield is in front of him ready to protect him, Samâs drone, Redwing, flies next to him cautiously, and Tonyâs repulsors are ready and waiting to be fired.
Tony expected to see some kind of weapon in the middle of the crater but instead of a thing, itâs a person--you. Youâre wearing a white dress that goes down to your feet, and you have a white glow about you. You groan in pain just as the light dies down and you look up at the three men staring at you.
âWhat the hell happened?â you ask.
You look to the sky to see your sisters shining in the night sky. How the hell did you get from up there to down here?
âWho are you?â Steve asks.
âMy name is Y/N. Who are you?â
âSteve, Tony, and Sam. What happened here?â
âI donât know. One minute I was shining in the sky and the next Iâm down here and in pain.â
âShining in the sky?â
âIâm a star. I was minding my own business and someone knocked me out of orbit.â
Steve, Tony, and Sam walk down the craterâs walls and toward you cautiously. They still donât know if youâre good or not until you get up and reveal whatâs been behind you this whole time. A shell of a missile that has the Hydra symbol on the side of it.
âWe need to get her inside. If Hydra wants her, then she must be special. We canât just leave her here.â
âLeave me here? What the hell is going on here?â
âIf Hydra wants you, itâs for a reason. We should get you inside before they come looking for you.â
Going with them beats sitting here and waiting for someone bad to find you. Everyone who was left behind waits eagerly for the menâs return, and theyâre shocked when they return with a gorgeous woman. Youâre scared of the many unknowns of your situation: who are these people? What do they want from you? Who is after you? Are you in danger? Will these people hurt you?
âWho is this?â Natasha asks.
âThe white light.â
âHere, sit,â Steve offers, and you take a seat away from everyone else. He knows youâre scared so heâs trying to make this as easy as possible for you. âSheâs a star.â
âA star?â Bucky asks with two eyebrows raised.
âAs I said to them earlier, I was living peacefully in the sky when something knocked me out of orbit.â
âHydra knocked her out of the sky. They must want a star.â
âWhy? Whatâs so significant about a star?â Bucky asks.
âThereâs lore around shooting stars,â you explain. âFor centuries, people have tried to get stars to fall to Earth for their hearts. If our hearts are consumed, itâll grant the person a sort of immortality. No one can live forever, but our hearts can extend life for centuries. Many of my sisters have fallen and died because of it.â
âHydra must want to reign for a long time,â Steve theorizes. âListen, why donât you stay here until we can figure out how to get you back into the sky.â
âCan we even do that?â Natasha wonders.
âThereâs a way. Itâs complicated but thereâs always a way.â
âBucky, why donât you show her to the room next to yours.â
âSure.â
âThank you,â you sigh and follow the man with a metal arm. Heâs very quiet and doesnât talk much which you relate to. âI appreciate your kindness.â
âSure. Let me know if you need anything.â
Bucky leaves you alone in the room and you sit on the bed in thought. You never sleep at night and allow yourself to rest during the day so youâre not tired at all. Bucky looks at you before he leaves but pauses. You look so scared and nervous that he canât help but walk back into the room to be with you. He sits next to you on the bed and wipes both hands on his jeans.
âI was once new here. I didn't know anyone besides Steve. Iâm gonna help you figure out a way to get you home.â
âThank you,â you smile.
The rest of the night is uneventful but right before the sun rose, your eyes started to droop. All of your sisters are sleeping as youâre supposed to be, but the Avengers are so loud you canât fathom sleeping with this noise. If Hydra wants you then they must have a base somewhere to hold the equipment to knock a star out of orbit. All that equipment will take a lot of money to acquire and a lot of space to hold, so they all come up with places that can be potential bases.
âAh, there she is. We need your help,â Tony says and waves you into the room.
âWhat are you guys doing?â you sigh and slump over to them.
âWeâre trying to figure out where Hydraâs base is. If we can, then we can plan an attack before they try and come for you.â
âGreat,â you sit down and place your chin in your hand.
All of them start talking over one another creating a small headache to form.
âY/N, I know youâre tired but can you remember where the missile came from? If we can get a sense of direction, we can narrow potential places significantly.â
âIâm not tired, Steve, Iâm exhausted. I never stay awake during the day. I need to sleep and rest but youâre all being so loud,â you sigh.
âCome with me,â Bucky offers.
Bucky leads you past both your rooms and to a wing of the compound that rarely is used. This place is the farthest from where anyone is gonna be. There is a spare bedroom down here that Bucky takes you to, and he opens the door for you.
âYouâll be able to get some sleep here. I come here when I want to be alone. Itâs quiet.â
âThank you, Bucky,â you smile.
Your entire body shines slightly to show how happy you are but Bucky doesnât think much of it. Youâre a star. Youâre supposed to be shining. All he does is give you a friendly smile and leave you alone to rest. Itâs easy for you to fall asleep and you stay asleep for the whole day. When the sun goes down, your body wakes you up to start shining. Then you remember where you are and your glow dims.
Youâre ready to take the night on and wander until you find the majority of the Avengers. Theyâve been working hard all day to figure out where the Hydra base is and are now taking a break to watch a movie.
âHey, sleepyhead,â Tony says when you enter the room.
âGot room for one more?â
Bucky moves over so you can sit next to him, and you blush slightly when your leg brushes up against his.
âDid you find out where Hydra is located?â
âNo. They have defense walls that arenât coming up on our radars, but we have Friday constantly looking for a way in.â
âWhoâs Friday?â
âMy AI,â Tony answers.
He turns the movie up so everyone can hear it, and you turn to Bucky with a shy smile.
âThank you for letting me use your space,â you whisper.
âI donât mind.â
âWhat movie are you guys watching?â
âDumb and Dumber. They love it.â
You try to get into the movie but youâre not connecting to it as much as you hope to. Everyone laughs at the same time when something funny happens but not you. Youâre not sure if you fit in well with this group. Humans have always been part of your fascination but you only know of the evolution of them, not them personally.
âExcuse me,â you whisper and get up.
Bucky watches you walk off toward our room without another word. He knows more than most what trying to fit in feels like and how bad he can feel when he doesnât. He leaves his friends and follows you to your room. Youâre sitting on the balcony and staring at the night sky where your sisters are.
âI promise Iâm coming home. Iâm figuring out a way to do that,â you sigh.
They twinkle to let you know they hear you.
âMind if I join you?â Bucky knocks on the balcony doors.
âNo.â
âAre you okay?â
âIâm not really a group person.â Bucky sits next to you on the lounge chair. âIâm more of a loner. I didnât have any planets orbiting me, and the closest star to me is my sister Vega. Sheâs such a sweetheart.â
âYeah, Iâm more of a loner, too.â
âMy sisters are the only ones I can count on, and theyâre watching over me right now to make sure Iâm okay.âÂ
Bucky looks up and they twinkle so he can see where theyâre located.
âWhen you were in the sky, could you watch over humans?â
âIt was my favorite thing to do. Iâve watched humans grow since they first arrived. I see the value in human life because it ends. Theyâve come a long way from where they first started.â
âIâve never met a star before. Youâre pretty nice and beautiful.â
Your body shines a bit at his compliment.
âThank you. Stars are pure and innocent despite the violence and horrors we see on a daily basis. We represent everything good about the world. We represent beauty.â
âI can tell,â he smiles.
Your body shines a bit more the more you are happy being here with Bucky. The stars in the sky shine a bit brighter when they see their sister happy.
Hydra hasnât made a move against the Avengers over the course of the following week because theyâre not sure how they can approach the situation. Valentina knows exactly where the star is and she canât charge in like she normally would. The Avengers are powerful that deserve careful planning and strategy to overcome.
Meanwhile, you and Bucky have grown closer. When youâre not sleeping, youâre spending as much time with Bucky as you can. There is only a short amount of time you can spend with him before one of you needs to sleep. In the beginning, you were only allowed a couple of hours to be with him, but now youâre spending half a day with him. Youâre slowly starting to fall asleep later in the morning and waking up later in the night. Itâs something youâre willing to change in order to be with Bucky.
âTell me something,â Bucky says.
You two are lying on the roof of the building admiring the night sky which is sure to come soon. Your skin is glowing brightly that if whoever were to look up at the roof, theyâd see nothing but a white glow.
âWhat?â you ask and look at him.
âI know that stars shine but do you get to choose when you get to? Iâve seen you with and without.â
âI shine when Iâm happy,â you say with a bright smile, âand Iâm happy right now with you.â
You and Bucky stay on the roof until there is no more sunlight left in the sky, and you yawn tiredly.
âTired?â
âA little bit.â
âLetâs go back inside.â
You and Bucky head back inside your room to get ready for the night, and you look at your bed in thought.
âYou know, I havenât been sleeping well. Iâve been transitioning into sleeping at night so Iâm still struggling a bit. I might be able to sleep better if it were next to you.â
Bucky holds his flesh hand out, too scared to use his metal hand for fear of breaking you. He takes you to his room where you two get comfortable underneath the sheets. Heâs shocked he can sleep with you shining next to him but it gives him a sense of comfort knowing you feel safe enough with him to shine.
The next morning, you wake with a smile on your face and your skin glowing.
âThis is the first time I slept through the night.â You look beside you but Bucky isnât there. The brightness dims on your skin until it looks normal. âBucky?â You get up and walk around the compound in search of Bucky, and you find him in the main room where the other Avengers are. âWhatâs going on?â
âWe found Hydraâs base. Natâs gonna stay here with you,â Tony declares.
Your eyes immediately find Buckyâs.
âYouâre not gonna stay here with me?â
âI know Hydra like the back of my hand. I have to go with them.â
âOh, okay.â
Tony, Steve, Bucky, Wanda, and Sam get geared up to go while you and Natasha stay behind. Sheâs decked in her gear just in case something happens. She has the capabilities to keep you safe since youâre not a fighter--youâre a lover. You donât think you could fight even if you wanted to.
âSo, how long have you been with the team?â you ask.
âToo long.â You look away in thought and bounce your leg nervously. âLook, I havenât known Bucky for very long but heâs trying. He used to be one of the bad guys but heâs doing a helluva lot more good to make up for the bad. He knows how to handle Hydra. Heâs going to be okay.â
âI know,â you nod with uncertainty.
You and Natasha make conversation for the next couple of hours when the alarms start blaring inside the compound.
âStay here.â
âYouâre leaving me alone?â you gasp.
âIâm sure itâs nothing. Just stay here and donât move. Iâll be right back.â
Natasha is gone before you have a chance to question her further. You wait nervously for her to come back because you have no clue where she is, whatâs going on, and who is inside the compound. After an hour of waiting around, you get up and look out the window. Everything seems normal as if there isn't an intruder inside. Footsteps near the room youâre in, ad you turn to the door waiting to see Natasha.
The door opens and you smile.
âI was beginning to worry.â
The smile is lost when you see a strange woman with four soldiers around her.
âSo was I. The easy part was tracking you down. Stars have a bit of⌠aura about them that is easily tracked. The hard part was infiltrating this place. I had to make sure I had all my bases covered. Youâre coming with us.â
âNo,â you stand your ground.
âNo? Emilio.â One of the men takes out a tablet from one of the pockets and flips it open. He presses a few buttons and shows you whatâs on the screen. All your friends are tied with Hydra soldiers all around them. Of course, youâre worried about all of them but you canât help but look at Bucky. âEither come with me or your friends will be killed.â
You have no choice but to go with her.
The woman, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, leads you through the large Hydra base to a big room with a staircase leading up to a small landing. A large table is on the landing with a medical cart next to it. There is nothing but different sizes of knives--knives that will be used to cut your heart out.
âA shining starâs heart is the way to go, but Iâll settle for your scared little one any day of the year.â Youâre only doing this because youâre scared of what these people are going to do to Bucky if you fight back. Youâre forced onto the table where Valentina straps you down so youâre not tempted to leave. âDonât worry, darling. Iâll make sure to make it quick and painless.â
She grabs one of the sharpest knives and walks over to you. You close your eyes and send a quick prayer to your sisters in hopes they can hear you. She raises her knife when the double doors slam open. You both look to see Bucky storming in with his deadly gun.
âBucky!â you smile and shine brightly at the sight of him.
âGet him!â Valentina orders.
A dozen guards make their way into the room and start shooting at Bucky who is more than prepared to handle them. Bullets fly as your concern for Bucky grows. However, he seems to beat every single one of them as he makes his way closer to you.
âEmilio!â Valentina yells.
The big guy who was with her earlier steps into the room with two charged electric gloves. His metal armor makes him immune to the bullets Bucky is firing at him, and he gives him an uppercut when he reaches him. Bucky goes flying across the room and uses his vibranium arm to slow his descent down the walkway.
Emilio and Bucky meet in the middle as they fistfight for your honor. There is no way Valentina is cutting your heart out now. She wants to see how this fight is gonna end. She is pretty confident that her soldier is going to win against the Winter Soldier, but oh how wrong she is. The double doors bust open and Wanda comes in with red magic at her fingertips. Tony and Steve are behind her ready to fight whoever they need to in order to save you.
Red magic encases Emilio to hold him still while Bucky delivers a deadly punch to the bottom of his jaw. Emilio is thrown across the room and knocks into a mirror, and he slides down it unconsciously. Valentina sees the urgency of the situation and raises the knife.
âTony, heads up.â
Steve rears his shield back and throws it in Valentinaâs direction, and Tony shoots his repulsors at the shield to make it fly the rest of the way. Valentina tries to escape but is hit before she can find coverage. She falls to the ground completely knocked out. Bucky runs up the staircase and over to you with an easy smile.
âYou really thought Iâd let you get sacrificed?â
âIâm glad youâre okay.â
Bucky undoes your ties and helps you off the table, and the both of you run down the staircase to the other Avengers. Before you can reach them, all the doors that lead into the room slam open. Dozens upon dozens of guards come in with their weapons, weapons that can kill everyone here. There are too many guards for Wanda to control and too many for them to take on.
They might not be able to but you can. You pull Bucky into you and wrap your arms around his neck.
âHold onto me and close your eyes.â
âWhy?â
âWhat do stars do best?â You pull him down so that his face is nestled into the shape of your neck. âThey shine.â
Your entire body shines with the intensity of a real star. Your teammates cover their eyes to protect themselves but the same thing canât be said for the Hydra soldiers. Your light kills whoever dares look into it, and the soldiers in the very back leave as quickly as they can before they can succumb to your light. You pull away from Bucky and dim your light knowing that these soldiers arenât going to hurt them anymore.
After Valentina is apprehended and taken back to the States for punishment through the CIA, Bucky returns back to the Compound with you by his side. There is a lot of paperwork that Nick Fury has to fill out, and Tony and Steve offered to stay behind to scour through the base and see what kinds of things Hydra has been up to.
The night sky is shining brighter than normal because your sisters are happy for your safe return.
âThey say thank you for saving me,â you say to Bucky.
âNo problem,â he says to the sky before looking back down at you. âSheâs worth saving.â
âYou know, these last two weeks with you have been amazing. If Iâm being honest, Iâm having second thoughts about going back. I donât want to leave you.â
âI donât want you to leave either.â
You wrap your arms around his neck and he pulls you in closer by your hips.
âMaybe staying here for a while longer wonât be so bad.â
He slides one hand up your body to your jaw which he cups. He leans down and kisses you with such intensity that causes butterflies to erupt in your stomach. The stars twinkle in the sky as your own light shines brightly for all to see.

Somebody To Love - Part 5
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 6 AO3
*Professor Farnsworth voice* Good news everyone! It is finished! There'll be one more part after this, I didn't need as many parts/chapters as I originally thought becasue I figured why can't I just have a high word count here? đ
I should be able to have the final part out soon once I've completed the edits. đĽłđ¤
Some tw's for this part: addict thoughts, talks of dieting, addiction recovery.
The delicacy with which Dustin and Max were handling him made Eddie feel like heâd been thrown into an alternate reality. They had the kid gloves on, treating him with so much care, like he was a temperamental ornament ready to shatter at any moment and honestly, he kind of appreciated it.Â
People often took one look at him and just assumed he was a tough as nails metalhead drug addict that would spit at them sooner than look at them and like⌠sometimes they werenât that far off.Â
But he was still human with an infuriatingly soft core and that core was feeling very bruised right now.
He didnât know exactly what they knew of everything, they were obviously much closer to Steve than they were to him, but he wasnât really sure how close.
Still, it was nice that they werenât automatically treating him like dirt for breaking Steveâs heart and then clumsily attempting to sellotape it back together with promises of proving it to him. Maybe that was Steveâs doing. Or maybe they were just more emotionally intelligent than heâd given them credit for.
Chrissy, however, had no such compunctions.
She waltzed into his house at ass oâclock in the morning and shoved a to-go coffee into his hands, knowing well he hadnât slept a wink, she had been the one up with him on the phone for half the night after all.
âCâmon, Twinkie!â She slapped his ass hard. Way harder than was necessary, in his opinion. âNowâs not a time for moping, nowâs a time for action!â
Eddie scowled at her and took a sip before coughing it up and shooting coffee straight out of his nose.
âJesus fuck!â He gulped back air, barely able to get the words out through the scratching at his throat. âHow many espresso shots are in this?!â
âDonât ask questions you donât want the answers to.â Chrissy dismissed with a wave of her hand.
He had barely managed to get his breath back, standing in the middle of his house in just his ratty old Dragon Ball Z boxers with coffee dripping down his chest when his front door was thrown open with a bang and more people descended on him.
âWhat the fuck are you guys doing here?â
The Corroded Coffin boys strolled through his house, immediately descending on his kitchen and raiding his cabinets for whatever food Steve constantly kept his house stocked with.
âWe heard you finally got your head out of your ass.â Jeff replied, through a mouthful of Honeycombs.
âHey! Those are mine- Wait. You knew?â
âDude, everyone knew.â Grant had commandeered his chocolate Yoo-Hoo, cracking the lid off easily.
Eddie felt his stomach drop. âEveryone?â
âEveryone.â Gareth emphasised, knowing exactly whose wrath Eddie was now fearing.
âShit. Does he know? What happened yesterday?â
Chrissy nodded. âI called him. Heâs in the air.â
âYou fucking traitor!â He shouted, pointing his finger at her. âHeâs going to kill me!â
She just waved her hand at him. âGo get dressed. Weâve got work to do.â
Eddie mumbled and grumbled but did as he was told, knocking back the rest of the poisonous coffee she had provided him. When he arrived back downstairs it was like walking into the middle of an intervention, even though he had started the process himself.
He was going to get off the drugs, he was going to stop drinking. He was no longer going to be sleeping around, obviously, but he was also going to go to a private medical clinic for a number of tests. Just to make sure he hadnât picked anything up in between previous testing. He was going to keep smoking, because god-damn it he needed something.
The rest of that day was spent with Dustin, Chrissy and the Corroded Coffin boys scraping through every square inch of his house, searching for his various stashes of drugs and alcohol while Max watched him like a hawk.
Chrissy pulled away some pills taped to the bottom of a decorative pot that sat on top of one of his upper cabinets and Eddie was pretty sure heâd never seen that pot in his life before. Never even looked at it, let alone hid shit using it. It was the ugliest fucking pot heâd ever seen, why was it in his house? Honestly heâd forgotten half the places they pulled a handle of vodka or a baggie of powder out of.Â
He wasnât an addict, he didnât consider himself an addict but he just used them more as an aid to get him through the day. He wasnât an addict.Â
He used them because he wanted to, not because he needed to.
Except.
Except now that he was faced with the reality that thereâd be none of it left in the house, and heâd be monitored very closely by all of them so he couldnât break and go out and get a fix⌠it had his anxiety skyrocketing through the roof and he almost asked them to stop multiple times.Â
But each time he did, he remembered the defeat and heartbreak on Steveâs face and he⌠he just had to keep pushing forward.Â
As they went from room to room, Max seemed to have some kind of sixth sense. Sitting there in her tailored business suit, red hair in a high pony, leaning over towards him with her elbows on her knees. Whenever he knew where something was stashed and the guys skimmed over it or missed it, she called out to them, telling them to look again without taking her eyes off him.
âHow the hell are you doing that?â He asked.
âI had a troubled upbringing.â Max replied with a flat tone of voice.
Theyâd been at it for hours by the time he called for a fucking breather. All of this was exhausting. The stress was eating at his stomach. Eddie was in his back garden, trying to chill the fuck out with a cigarette when he heard the door open behind him.
âBoy.â The voice that came from behind him was heavy and stern, like Eddieâs own personal Kratos had descended and Eddie froze like a rabbit caught in a trap.
He turned slowly, hoping that someone else, anyone else was around to help take the pressure off but they all seemed to have scattered, the cowards.
âWayne!â He tried to inject as much joy and lightness into his voice as he got to his feet but the man just continued to stare down at him with a raised eyebrow and his arms crossed, towering over him like a monument of parental disappointment.
Quick as a flash Wayneâs hand shot out and slapped him over the back of the head, not too hard, but hard enough to let Eddie know he wasnât happy, as if that had ever been in doubt. âWhat did you do to that young man?â
âYou canât hit me! Iâm in recovery!â
Wayne slapped him again.
âIâm fixing it!â
âYou better be. I like that Steve kid. Heâs good for you.â
Eddie slumped, dropping his cigarette butt on the ground and trudging over to his uncle, pressing his forehead into his collarbone. âI know.â
Wayne nodded and pulled him in close for a hug.
âIâm fixing it.â Eddie said again, quieter this time.Â
âGood.â Wayne rubbed his hand up and down Eddie back before pulling away. âWeâll get this sorted.â He placed his hands on either side of Eddieâs face and gave him a light squeeze. âNow pick up that butt, I didnât teach you to litter.â
For all his whining and grumbling and absolute terror of the man, it was a big help having Wayne around. Of course it was, how could it not be. Though heâd never doubted Wayne for a second, facing up to the consequences of his actions had never been something Eddie was particularly eager to do.
Case in point, involving Chrissy was maybe a mistake.Â
Because she was, like, sporty and shit. And she kept dragging him out of bed in the early hours of the morning once the worst of everything was out of his system.Â
Sheâd force him into the gym room that came with the house and Eddie was pretty sure heâd never set foot in it before. But all the stuff there had clear signs of being used regularly and it was with a strange mix of sadness and glee that he figured Steve had probably been the one using it all along.
âWhy am I here?â
âTo get some endorphins into you without using drugs.â
Soulmate his fucking ass.Â
Chrissy was no less than a drill sergeant and no amount of whining and bitching would stop her from making him do stretches and get on the treadmill and god he fucking hated it. Any one who enjoyed exercising was now solidly listed under âpsychopathâ in his brain.Â
Chrissy had even convinced Max to get her husband, some kind of sports health something or other, to put together a meal plan for him that had him eating shit like broccoli and apples and brown fucking rice.
Eddie did not throw a temper tantrum by day five of that diet, about a week and a half into this whole âgetting his shit together so he could prove to Steve he was a competent humanâ thing. Definitely not, even though his muscles ached and he wanted to stuff an entire Dunkin worth of Donuts into his mouth and get stupidly ridiculously high.
âFuck off and leave me alone, Chrissy.â He snapped one morning from underneath his bedsheets. He was fucking tired, he was fucking sore and last he checked sugar wasnât one of the addictions he was supposed to be giving up so why the fuck wasnât he allowed to have any?
Chrissy crossed her arms. âNo.â
âWhatâs even the point of this anyway? How the hell is the fucking broccoli and the fucking treadmill proving to Steve that Iâm gonna stick around?â
âBecause youâre improving yourself, taking care of yourself. Staying away from the drugs and alcohol and sex orgies and showing him youâre trying.â She sighed, softening her voice. âDidnât you tell him youâd try every day for him?â
âWhatever.â Eddie grumbled, pulling the covers up over his head. âItâs a bed day. Iâm staying in bed. Donât try to drag me out, I will bite you.â
He could hear Chrissy leave and he knew the attitude was unnecessary, she was his rock in all of this, but he just wasnât in the fucking mood to do anything apart from wallow.
He had dozed back off to sleep until he was awoken by someone coming up the stairs. He nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw a tall handsome man with fantastic shoulders standing in his doorway with a box of fucking donuts in his hand.
What kind of sugar-craving wet dream was this?
The guy lifted his hand with a pleasant smile. âHey-â
âSorry, man. Iâm off the market.â Eddie slurred in some kind of delirious half-asleep haze before his brain finally caught up with him and he realised thatâs probably not what was happening right now.
The guy burst out in a short laugh. âYeah, me too. Iâm Maxâs husband, Lucas.â
Eddieâs entire face went scarlet. âOh fuck, donât tell her I said that. Sheâll cut my balls off.â
âDonât worry about it.â He said with an easy smile as he held the box out and shook it slightly. âI brought these for you.â
Lucas handed the donuts to him and even though Eddie should be wary of the quite literal candy from a stranger (although, was candy really the correct term?), the allure of fried sugar was too much.
âArenât you supposed to be having me eat healthy?â Eddie asked, practically diving face first into the box and stuffing as much as he could into his mouth at once. âMinoththuppothsbeowmaheawthmfifthnssjurmy?âÂ
Lucas blinked at him and Eddie forced himself to swallow the large lump of fried dough, but not without sucking on his fingers first. âAm I not supposed to be on a health and fitness journey? Or whatever you,â he wiggled his fingers at him, âactive types call it.â
"Donât get me wrong, you still need to eat right and exercise but the meal plans I write up are usually for athletes at the top of their game. So the fact that sugar and some fats never made it in just never occurred to me. And no offence to you dude, but you are no athlete.â He smiled and tapped the box. âEverything in moderation, right?â
Things began to even out after that. The boys started to travel between Eddieâs house and their own homes, checking in on him less and less the better he got. Finally getting to spend some well deserved time with their families rather than babysitting their problematic frontman.Â
Wayne still stuck around. Eddieâs literal rock in everything heâd ever done in his life ever and Chrissy was no longer riding him so hard about getting the endorphins pumping.Â
Honestly video games could do the same thing for him but she refused to accept that.
When Steve walked back through his front door some two weeks after heâd left for a second time, he took Eddie by surprise all over again, manifesting behind him like some kind of ghost and scaring the ever loving shit out of him.
But he didnât throw himself at Steve this time.Â
He didnât have that right anymore.Â
The ball was in Steveâs court and he would be the one that would decide just how fast they moved from now on.
He noticed the difference in Eddie almost immediately because of course he did. Telling him off hand that he looked good, healthy. That he hadnât looked like that since their second studio album blew up, which caused Eddie to blush furiously and hide his face behind his hair like a fucking schoolgirl and not someone who had appeared in fucking âPlaygirlâ, which he had.
Usually in his down time he would have been spending it hanging out with Steve and his weird little found family. And with Wayne, flying in between LA and Indiana and getting to remember what it felt like to just be a normal person again.Â
But it had also been the time Eddie would let loose and go hard into everything could. The kinds of things he couldnât manage when on tour.Â
Days long sex parties, kink clubs, high quality drug dens, week long getaways to someoneâs private island or luxury yacht that probably collectively took ten years off his life every time he went.
But they were a thing of the past now.
Eddie found he was kind of enjoying the slower summer getting clean afforded him. Heâd started to enjoy the things he used to love so much, but lost over time.Â
Reading, losing himself in a writing haze, feeling the frantic passion of ideas and creativity overtaking him, and all with a clear head this time.Â
Days spent in his basement studio no longer fueled by cocaine and other stimulants, now only fueled by caffeine.Â
Before, heâd be able to go a couple of days awake in his writing haze but caffeine was no substitute for coke.Â
As a result of that, being under the influence of only caffeine, sugar and nicotine he usually ended up crashing on the couch down there before he even realised he was falling asleep. Sometimes heâd wake up with handwritten pages stuck to his cheek or forehead, sometimes heâd wake up with the mother of all back aches and stiff fingers. But sometimes heâd wake up with a blanket thrown over him, the ghost of a hand in his hair and a strawberry frappuccino waiting for him on the coffee table.
The downside of being lucid and sober was that Eddie was now painfully aware of his shithead behaviour over the last number of years and it constantly threatened to push him back into a spiral again.Â
He was actually mentally present for the first time in he didnât know how long for a meeting with the label executives to discuss a timeline for the next album and tour. He had no idea just how much Steve had been doing for him, especially when it came to this.Â
Making decisions on his behalf that always benefited him far more than anything heâd have been able to negotiate himself, making excuses for why he was so out of it all the time that everyone could see through. But the execs always let it go because Corroded Coffin were one of the labels biggest bands, on of their biggest money earners and continued to be, no matter how fucked up Eddie was.
And it wasn't just meetings with execs he now had to deal with. The people refused to get the god-damn memo. The invites to all the debauched shit he usually took part in just kept coming and people actually started getting defensive whenever he refused.
No matter what he told them.Â
He told them he didnât want to go. He was healing. He was off the shit that would be shared around like pass the parcel. They were down right offended to hear it. Like Eddie was somehow telling them all he was better than them by holding up a mirror towards their own actions which⌠maybe, yeah actually.
The only invite he had accepted was a charity fundraiser for queer homeless youth. But only with a firm stance that he would not be going to any kind of after party, so donât even bother asking.
But it would be fine.Â
Thereâd be alcohol and probably some drugs and probably some people trying to get into his pants there but Chrissy and Steve would also be there, all but chained to his side. Gareth, Jeff and Grant would be taking up the mantle of schmoozing so it would be fine.
Plus, he was close to hitting his ninety days so he was definitely stronger than he had been at the start, right?
Yeah.
Either way, the alcohol, the drugs, the horny people⌠it would be the kind of shit that would be unavoidable in his line of work. So heâd have to get used to temptation being thrown in his face regardless and this would be a nice entry level experiment.
âYou sure you want to do this?â Steve asked him, with an arm around his shoulder.Â
The return to normal touch had been gradual, happening over the last few months and it was doing wonderful things for his nerves right now. The three of them were sitting in the back of the big fancy car, stalling.
Steve flashed him a cheeky grin. âWe can leave and head to the McDonalds drive-thru right now if you want.â
Eddie smiled and stopped twisting his rings around his fingers. This was an overly fancy event, probably requiring white gloves as part of the dress code but Eddie wasnât going to start worrying about expectations like that now.Â
They knew who theyâd invited.Â
âIâm fine. Itâs fine.â He tipped his head over until he was leaning against Steveâs shoulder and laced his fingers with Chrissyâs gloved hand. âLetâs just get this over with. Maybe we can leave before I turn back into a pumpkin, though?â
Steve smiled. âSure thing.â He pressed a quick kiss to the top of Eddieâs head and smoothly exited the car.Â
It was definitely not the most intimate thing theyâd ever done together in their decade long friendship but definitely the most intimate thing that theyâd done in the last three months and Eddieâs stomach exploded with butterflies.
âCinderella doesnât turn back into a pumpkin at midnight.â Chrissy said, shaking out her large pale pink dress as she stepped out of the car after Eddie. âAre you calling yourself the carriage?â
âYeah.â He offered her his elbow. âI have plenty of carriage.â
âTwinkie,â she shook her head, âyou have no carriage. Itâs a tiny little fuzzy peach butt.â
âExcuse you, itâs a pumpkin!â
She rolled her eyes and gave his ass a little pinch out of view of anyone. âIt is not.â
âItâs really not, Eds.â Steve put in with a not so subtle up-and-down look.
âThis is a betrayal of the highest order,â he pointed at them, âand the both of you are terrible people.â
Overall, things went pretty well.Â
He didnât really have to talk to anyone, the Corroded Coffin boys as previously discussed between them, were dealing with the majority of boring ass rich people conversation and Steve had enough experience from his upbringing with his parents to deflect the most persistent of wannabe schmoozers. Eddie had been sticking only to mocktails (his favourite would always be a Shirley Temple but they had some strawberry thing which was essentially just strawberry limeade but it was fucking delicious so who gave a fuck) and some really nice non-alcoholic champagne that honestly tasted better than the regular champagne without the tang of alcohol in it.
Steve had to lead someone away, almost with a hand at their elbow when they just kept pushing for conversation. Chrissy was in a gentle discussion with a new young artist who looked like she was about to vibrate out of her skin from fear. And Eddie felt a shadow descend into the chair next to him.
He turned, still trying to suck the last dregs of his Shirley Temple out of the bottom of his glass.
The guy who sat down looked vaguely familiar, in that kind of memory signal way. His subconscious definitely knew theyâd crossed paths before but that could mean anything. Maybe heâd collaborated with him in the past? Maybe he was an old supplier? Maybe heâd slept with him, who knew?
âHi!â The guy said with a smile and dark bedroom eyes.
Well, okay.
He slid a drink towards him, cold and beading with condensation and the most beautiful amber colour.
Eddie swallowed, unable to take his eyes off of it. He picked up the edge of the white tablecloth, using it to push the drink away. He didnât even want to risk touching it.
âIâm clean.â Eddie pretty firmly kept the now empty Shirley Temple glass up, still sucking the straw around the bottom, trying to keep a barrier between them because no thank you. Not tonight. Not ever, anymore, if life worked out the way he wanted.
The guy nodded and smiled again, a little condescending, as though Eddieâs attempt to stay sober was cute. âI've been watching you. Trying to find an opportunity to say hi.â He scoffed lightly with a raised eyebrow. An attempt at an inside joke only one of them was in on. âYour bodyguardâs got a pretty tight grip on you though. Glad he finally gave you a chance to breathe.â
âSteveâs not my bodyguard.â
Even though he could be. Has definitely had to act like it before. More than once.Â
God, Eddie was a shit.
âNo? Heâs certainly acting like it. Wonât let anyone near you. Seems a little possessive if you ask me.â The guy scooted a little further forward and started brushing his leg up and down Eddieâs calf and Eddie retracted almost immediately.
âThatâs going to be a solid no from me. Iâm off the market for the foreseeable future.â
The guy couldnât hide his surprise quickly enough. âSeriously? Someone get in your head about it?â The corner of his mouth tilted up in a smug grin. âCouldnât stop thinking of a particular night? I couldnât stop thinking of it either. I heard you stopped making the rounds after.â
Eddie could do nothing but blink at the absolute balls on this guy. But apparently this was a one sided conversation because the guy was still talking.
âI was hoping youâd call me again.â He attempted to nudge Eddieâs knee with his hand but Eddie pulled back again with a hard glare. The guy scoffed again. âUnless, of course, your phone privileges have been taken away by the help.â He laughed at his own pathetic, mean excuse for a joke. âI think we could be quite good together, Eddie.â
âI donât fucking think so.â
The guy pushed out his bottom lip and batted his big eyelashes at him, like Eddieâs rejection was performative, like he was playing hard to get. âAwh. Thatâs too bad. You marked me up so good last time.â
It was only then that it finally clicked for him. âYouâre the guy from the âSuckerâ video.â
The guy's bravado faltered, clearly not expecting to be forgotten so easily.
âObviously.â He bit out.
He was the last guy Eddie had slept with before everything had happened.
Steve had shown him out and left on his vacation almost immediately after.
Heâd been so upset.
âWhat the fuck did you say to him?â Eddie hissed, finally setting his glass down.
The guy blinked with a curl at his lip. âWho?â
âSteve.â
âOh, him?â The guy laughed, short and sharp and mean. âNot my fault if he wasnât ready to hear some harsh truths.â He shrugged. âI didnât tell him anything he didnât deserve to hear. Practically did you a favour, by the way.â The guy rolled his eyes. âJust had to get it in his head that he didnât have a shot, shooting above his pay grade and if he couldnât handle it he should take a long walk off a short pier. Even if you did let him weasel his way back in-â
There was something shoved hard into Eddieâs chest and he only had a second to register what was happening before he had to catch Chrissy around the waist and pull her back to stop her clawing this guy's eyes out.Â
The purse sheâd pushed at him fell to the floor as Eddie was jerked forward, using his all of his weak as shit strength to keep a firm grip on Chrissy who was always so strong with her hidden jock prowess.
âJesus Christ, put a leash on her, would you?â The guy had fired himself backwards, nearly toppling himself out of his seat.
âYou motherf-! Edward, let me go!â Chrissy was swiping at the guy with one arm while the other dug into Eddieâs arm, trying to loosen his grip.Â
Before he could consider whether the spectacle of Chrissy Cunningham in her pink meringue dress absolutely wrecking this guys shit would be worth the entertainment enough to let her free, a wall of bodies planted themselves firmly in her way.
âI think itâs time we head out, donât you?â Jeff asked leaning back, trying to avoid Chrissyâs hands.
âYeah,â Eddie huffed. Jesus this girl was strong. âYeah, maybe!â
The four of them were able to manhandle Chrissy, who was still spitting and cursing, shooing her out of the front door. Eddie glanced back and saw Steve leaning down towards the guy with the sharpest smile heâd ever seen, muttering into his ear âHe doesnât even remember your nameâ before turning and following the five of them out.
There was silence between the six of them outside, save for the sound of Chrissyâs heavy breathing, as they waited for the car to come around.
They all bundled themselves inside and once the door slammed shut Eddie exploded.
âOkay, what the hell?âÂ
The boys were looking at him with wary expressions, Chrissy was wide eyed and a little flushed and Steve just cocked an eyebrow, well used to Eddieâs tantrums after so long. But that wasnât what this was.
âHim? Him? I slept with him? Heâs not even cute, why the hell didnât anyone stop me?!â He pointed at each of them in turn, not even bothering to skip out Steve, the fucker would only tease him about it later.
The car started moving and Eddie took a second to send a silent apology to the very nice chauffeur, Marlon, who really shouldnât have to be dealing with their nonsense.
âTwinkie,â Chrissy huffed, ripping her white opera gloves off, âthe amount of times I have tried to slap the dick out of your hand and get you to listen to me-â
Eddie squealed, high and outraged. But he couldnât even stay mad because Steve was doubled over cackling like a witch on her broomstick and the boys were poking fun at him while literally poking him in the sides and all he could do was slump down in his seat and pout at them with crossed arms.
They did end up going through the McDonalds drive-thru after all.
So... y'all wanna see Eddie's Playgirl cover? đ (minors dni)
That magnificent artwork was done by the supremely talented @sporelium and I am in fucking awe of him, like holy shit. I saw it when it was originally posted and I have not been able to stop thinking about it. Thank you so much for letting me reference it here. đđ¤

iâm not saying steveâs magic dick is going to take buckyâs trauma away all iâm saying is that bucky would not be so alone if steve was knocking on his door dragging him out for dumb adventures because you know theyâre BOTH free to choose what they want to do and youâre telling me that two bros who probably dreamed about a future after the war are not gonna want to hang out and see the world (as broken as it might be) and yeah okay the chances of them NOT getting pulled into some new fight is unlikely but even then i truly believe that bucky is at a place now that he would accept steveâs company and friendship and you already know that steveâs been simping over this jerkface cutesass bitch for 7 decades so.Â
#oh wait yeah steve actually isn't in bucky's life anymore I FORGOT ABOUT THAT LITTLE PIECE OF CANON#my bad#carry on#the one friend that bucky probably would have texted consistently and returned calls to#aBANDONED HIM#that's right#that is exactly something steve rogers childhood best friend would absolutely do#ooc / for legal purposes this is a joke.#tfatws#tfawts spoilers#i CANNOT BELIEVE#they set up the whole 'shared life experiences' thing#they even set up the cringe weird ass sharon thing#they set up peggy very clearly wanting steve to live his own life???? not insert himself into hers ????#LIKE WHAT WAS THE POINT FAM#edit: i appreciate that they didn't just straight up kill steve#but it difficult to imagine that steve wouldn't insert himself into bucky and sam's lives if he was around#even if he was off grid#sOOO#i guess i'm gonna go divergent from tfatws AS WELL as eg

A Part of The Team: Chapter 4
Bucky x reader
Based of this request:Â Hello! Would you mind doing a oneshot where Bucky and Reader just got married and he becomes more protective of her and sweeter and clingier and his team mates tease him about it ? đ
Warnings: Not a one
Words: 1168
I didn't edit this to the best of my ability because it is 4:30 am here as I drank coffee wayyyy too late in the day. So, please dont be mad. I hope you like it :)
Chapter 4
You chickened out. You were a big, fat, pathetic chicken. Plain and simple.
You were at the point where you had no other option but to tell Bucky, today. You had an ultrasound appointment in two days and he would be hurt if you told him just the day before, as if you initially planned to go without him or something. To be honest at this point, no matter what you do, he will probably be hurt, and that killed you, but there is only going forward.
So, you were a big girl and you told him, just in the most chicken way possible. You quickly scribbled a note that you left on the kitchen counter for him to be greeted with when he woke up, then ran out the door to go straight to the park.
âHey Buck, how are you? I am fine. Sorry I wasnât there when you woke up. I went for a walk in the park. I will see you a little later. P.S. Iâm pregnant. Â Love, Y/N.â
Sweet and to the point. Right? Probably, wrong.
So, now you waited in the uncharacteristically, quiet park, seated on an overused bench on its last leg, just waiting for your husband to call you. After it hit 12 noon, you became increasingly concerned. Your husband did not sleep in late. Some nights it was hard to get him to sleep at all. So, unless one of the team saw the note and hid it for some devious reason, there was no way Bucky hadnât seen it.
You had your phone tightly secured in your left pant pocket, so it was not as if he couldnât reach you if he wanted. Maybe it hurt him more than you thought, maybe to the point where he would divorce you and your unborn child.
No wait, that wasnât Bucky. He could hate you, even if unlikely, and would still be there for your child. So, what the hell was going on? Why hadnât he called you?
You had been gone for three hours, so you would have to go back eventually. You hadnât brought your purse, so you couldnât even get a cup of decaf coffee if you wanted to, and now you were getting hungry. You were eating for two, right? That had to merit the amount of pasta you were eating lately, you were sure.
After 15 more minutes, you gave up. It took you 5 minutes to get back to the tower, and that was taking your time. Absorbing every second you had to try and figure out what to tell Bucky. You were a bit thankful that you had to go to the top floor, as you would be given as much time as possible to settle your scattered thoughts.
Elevator door opening, you took one last deep breath and stepped onto the dark hardwood floor. The plan was to go straight to your bedroom to find your husband and explain why you had done what you had, when you heard the unique voice of the one and only Captain America, your best friend. Your instinct was to run the other way because you knew he was talking to one very specific person, but you knew that if that was your initial thought, then it was surely the wrong one, so you turned the corner and slowly headed down the stairs to the living room where you would inevitably have the conversation you were incredibly nervous to have.
And there he was, beautiful, bright blue eyes and puffy lips, both stained with confusion that you were unsure how to handle, but completely understood.
Neither had noticed you, so you stood to the side and waited for Steve to finish his encouraging talk.
âBucky, itâs fine. You donât need to be scared of this. Youâre gonna be an amazing father and you have Y/N to parent with. You have her at your side. You couldnât ask for anyone better.â
âBut, why this way?â
âI donât know, but Iâm sure she was just nervous to see your reaction. She knows you even better than I do and knows that with everything you have been through, you would be hesitant to the idea of all of this. It makes sense, my friend.â
Bucky raked his long fingers through his silky hair. âYea, I suppose youâre right.â
âAnd letâs be honest. This kid is not just going to have the two of you as parents. No matter how you want it, this is the first baby born into the team, so her or she is going to getâŚâ Steve paused, you assumed to count the number of team members. It was hard to keep track, the group seemed to be growing all the time. ââŚnine extra parents, give or take.â
Bucky had no choice but to smile and neither did you. Steve was able to sum up exactly how you were feeling and the words you didnât know how to get past your lips in order to portray your thoughts. But, no matter how much you appreciated what he had said, it was now your turn.
âBuckyâŚâ
Both men turned to you and their eyes lit up, Buckyâs sparkled just a little more. A smile spit his face and you knew it was instinctual, just as he had once told you. No matter his emotion, he just couldnât seem to help it. You returned it as best you could before speaking again.
âBucky, Iâm sorry I told you this way, it was wrong, I shouldnâtâveâŚâ
He stood and was instantly in front of you, hands moving to your upper arms before sliding down to tread his finger between yours.
âSweetheart, itâs ok. I promise. I justâŚIâm not sureâŚâ
âBucky,â You said, locking your eyes with his. âYou are going to be good at this.â
âHow could you be sure, Doll?â
You smiled and chuckled and squeezed his hands slightly before standing on your tiptoes and placing your lips next to his ear. âJust think of your baby as a mini Steve.â
He pulled back to meet your eyes again with his eyebrows all scrunched together. âWell, thatâs only slightly odd.â
You chucked once more. âYou know what I mean. Bucky, you know how to do this. You know how to be there for someone and at the end of the day, what our child will need is support, love, protection, and someone to help him or her get though the tough times.â
You removed your right hand from his and placed it on his scruffy cheek. âAll things you are very good at, Mister. You might have to remind yourself every once and a while, but when you forget, Iâll be there to tell you again.â
He turned his head, to kiss the skin of your palm. âYouâre wonderful, you know.â
âSee, there you go. Itâs instinctual.â
He chuckled, finally, and you took it as a success. Then, he leaned down to place his soft lips on yours.

Can you elaborate on your disappointment for those of us who didn't read the new issue of Superman?
It didnât fulfill a promise. The first issue was full of great moments and a glossy Ivan Reis sheen - it obviously wasnât going to properly be on anything like Morrisonâs level, but it was doing a good job of replicating the surface-level aspects of what makes his work so fun, and it looked assured that weâd finally get the wild cosmic Superman adventure weâd been waiting for. But the second went down to filler material where, in spite of having Ryan Sook and Jorge Jimenez each do pages, it let Ed Benes take point for most of the issue. And this final third, for all the promise of high-concept epic action, was an almost platonically boring superhero comic; generic heroic speechifying in place of character, a non-plot and a non-villain, and a visibly rushed Tony Daniel and Clay Mann on art (still better than Benes, but thereâs no Sook to wow you up front either this time). Plus Clark gets none of the answers this was promoted as giving him, which I guess means Titans #7 is now completely out of continuity, given thereâs no way he could know what he knows in there prior to Superman Reborn.
All of that pales to the one truly gigantic spoilery misstep though, under the cut.

So yeah, Red Racer runs himself to death - another Ultima Thule needs to be constructed to reach and save the Superfolks, a thousand-year undertaking, and he âcompressesâ so much time to get it done in time that he burns himself out, telling President Superman to let his partner Hank know heâs sorry. This is bad and dumb for a number of reasons.
1. Not the biggest reason, but certainly the most immediate one: that isnât how Flashâs powers fucking work. If it was, he would have died of old age minutes if not seconds after he got hit by that lightning bolt.
2. Much bigger: in an Ultimate Justice League specifically constructed to be more diverse than the âmainâ model so as to point the way forward for the rest of superhero comics, itâs the happily-committed gay guy whoâs the sacrificial lamb. Which goes hand-in-hand withâŚ
3. Multiversity already played this out. As soon as the first issue dropped and we saw a gay Barry Allen analogue in the middle of a Crisis story, everyoneâs immediate thought was that he was going to run himself to death, which #2 seemed to go into as the finale approachedâŚonly for him to come back and be the hero to save the day and unite the champions of 50 worlds to rescue all of creation (which I guess we shouldâve seen coming, given Morrisonâs love for Barry Allen). And after all that, whadda ya know, he dies in his first appearance after that in a lesser recreation of the same original scene, without even any of the same buildup.
4. This is kind of a dick move to Morrison? This whole arc is clearly done in appreciation of his ideas, but the first thing you do when given access to them is break his toys he may or may not have been planning to come back to? Forget blowing Earth 14, this is straight-up shitting in the punch bowl. I mean, I hear Earth 8 might end up wrecked in the first arc of Steve Orlandoâs JLA, but given heâs one of the best writers out there right now and has a palpable love and respect for Morrisonâs work, I have to assume he put some kind of thought into it.
5. Thereâs absolutely no reason for it to happen; the story goes no differently than if heâd built it as a quick cool moment with no repercussions, logistically or emotionally. Superman isnât seen wracked with guilt that this man died for him, we donât get Flashlight mourning the loss of his love; thereâs no aftermath whatsoever to it of even the most perfunctory, saccharine sort. In fact, the space taken up for this out-of-nowhere and frustrating development could have been spent trying to shore up the A-storyâs numerous deficiencies. It happens purely, entirely so we could get that Crisis homage panel up top.
So yes, that kind of overshadows everything else, but I can assure you it sucks even aside from that. Like I said, that first issue was gangbusters, but it completely fumbled the ball here on just about every level.
EDIT:Â jamesjmcghie said: They killed Red Racer??? What's happening with Grant's Multiversity Too: The Flash book then?
Thatâs just an origin book for Barry Allen. Morrisonâs said that while DC advertised Too as his continuation of the original series, he only really has that one Flash book in mind, and DC suggested the Multiversity branding as a tie-in and new way of marking parallel-Earth stories. It could become a full-fledged sequel in time, but thatâs not in the immediate cards.
