hai :))) thoughts on roxy<>jake?
pointing and laughing at you for forgetting to click a button
anyway yeah i like it, though a lot of this post is going to be me examining their respective character flaws and potential issues with a moirallegiance, i definitely do think they could/would have a supportive platonic relationship. i see a few different interpretations flying around when it comes to the pale quadrant but if we go by the comic as-written, the role of moirails is to 'balance and complement each other's emotional profiles, and thus allow their other relationships to be more successful'... roxy and jake get on well, but do they actually balance each other out? i think they might be too similar in some ways, and i get the vibe that the pale quadrant is typically about people with contrasting personalities coming together.
that's not me shooting it down though, i do think these two compliment each other quite well. they enjoy each other's senses of humor and i really like their pesterlogs because it's really fun to see them bounce off each other! additionally, they both seem to enjoy aspects of femininity and feminine presentation so i think they'd enjoy bonding over and exploring that.
ramble continued beneath the cut, tl;dr they are both well-meaning people who want to support each other, but i think there's a possibility that they might struggle to communicate around more serious issues. it would take some effort to make it work, but it COULD work!
in general i'm a little hesitant to say 'oh yeah this relationship would definitely be 100% functional' because. it's the alpha kids. they have a lot of personal flaws that result in a lot of interpersonal problems, and those might emerge here too.
broadly speaking both roxy and jake seem to have impulsive sides, so maybe they'd egg each other on in irresponsible ways? and though they talk on the quest beds, those are pretty exceptional circumstances so i don't know how good they would be at communicating in more ordinary circumstances - roxy's light-hearted demeanour can make it seem like she's not taking things seriously and jake is very non-confrontational and avoids having difficult conversations with his friends. though maybe those communication styles match actually better than anyone elses would, i'm not sure.
another concern i have is that while roxy ostensibly works through some of her issues on-screen, jake does not - and roxy is all too used to being 'the supportive friend' while jake is usually wrapped up in his own issues. i don't know if i want them to be locked into that pattern where she has to support him and doesn't get enough back, you know? i do think they could be good for each other, it would just take some work from where they are in canon - and we DO see them putting effort into being there for each other in canon! especially on the quest beds. given the trickster hangover roxy is a little worn out and irritated by jake freaking out on her, but even though reassuring him is kind of a lot she still shows him a lot more patience and understanding than anyone else.
(maybe i'm just an idiot falling for jake's facade, but he does read like someone who genuinely needs direct communication sometimes. for the love of god... we need to diagnose him with something...)
and later into act 6, she is genuinely exited to see him and tries to reach out to him!
roxy clearly still likes jake. she reminds jane that jake isn't *genuinely* trying to be an asshole, and she tells dave that she thinks jake is a lot of fun if you can get him out of his shell, which bodes well for their friendship.
now, on jake's side of the moirallegience... i'm not sure exactly what kinds of support jake could provide roxy in return, though he is good at matching her energy. i can see him being genuinely excited and supportive as a friend. that said roxy is tired of putting everyone else first and being the designated shoulder to cry on, and i don't know if jake really has the social or emotional awareness to support her in that way. he's self centered and gets wrapped up in his own problems, but he is beginning to recognise that during his turning point on the quest beds.
and as we see a few screenshots above, he tries to offer her support when it occurs to him to do so! he does want to be a good friend and roxy of all people seems to understand his limitations best. so i think he could be a good moirail... but he would need to undergo some PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT first.
sidebar, i'd need to reread first to be certain but i heard somewhere that jake never does the rp thing again after this and if so thats really funny:
(removing a means of obfuscation for the benefit of others, hm? the rogue of void strikes again...)
anyway, wow all this is without even TOUCHING the fact that their pre-scratch selves knew each other and extra-canon materials in particular would suggest grandpa harley seems to have had a big influence on mom lalonde which is... [stares into the middle distance forlornly] sad. like, roxy beats her acoholism, but if jake doesn't figure himself out he is in real danger of winding up just like grandpa harley, you know? so i really like building on their dynamic with that in mind. you know maybe they don't need to be tragic and dysfunctional adults. maybe they can do better this time around! maybe.
#i know in my heart everything is that fuckin old man's fault#roxy you need to put eyeliner on him NOWWWWW#thanks for asking! sorry i know you hate angst but this is my blog and i like exploring flaws. and i think they can def build on this#ask#edit thanks tumblr for killing the quality of my screenshots

Hi again :) I was wondering if you have any tips on editing? I’ve been reading your story since the beginning and you have improved greatly!! I just started using photoshop, so still figuring everything out.
Hello-hello :) First of all, thank you for reading my legacy, I feel really grateful, honestly :3 Now to the business.
I’m not sure how useful of tips I can give to someone who’s just starting with PS, cause there’s a lot to look into about it.
• If I were new to PS I’d start with understanding adjustments layers and their effects, cause these guys will be the main thing in every editing. There are a lot of tutorials out there, especialy videos on youtube, which explain it so much more efficiently than I could possibly do in a tumblr post. If you’re not feeling like getting too deep into this whole topic, look for different .psd and photoshop actions for editing, tthere are a lot out there, they’re also good as a base to understanding the whole thing.
• Then I’d look into Topaz Clean plug-in, this one helps to clean and sharpen your images, I wrote about it and how I use it >here
• Then, it doesn’t really have anything to do with PS, but pay attention to in-game lighting. And I don’t only mean all kinds of No-Blu lighting mods, but actually all the lamps in your sims’ house. I realized the whole power of this instrument not so long ago, and it affects the quality of my screenshots so much, it’s ridiculous. Here’s a link to a very helpful tutorial, which explains this topic in detail. Basically, the better your source screen is, the easier it will be to edit it, so I wouldn’t ignore this step :3
• Avoid too bleached lights as well as too dark/black shadows, unless you’re going for the effect. Both of these will make later editing hurt..
• Mind your sharpening tools - sharpness is good, it gives your image polished look, but over-sharpening will kill your every effort.
• Look into overlay textures (google it x) there are light effects, dust effects, noise effects, scratches, shadows, blooms, camera bleaches, vignettes, color gradients - find what you like and go for it, they will no only give your images depth, but may also help you find your own style.
•This will be my last tip, but not least. Go for your own thing, ask this same ask to different simblrs who’s editing you like, see what different answers you’ll get, try all the different stuff and make your own mixture out of it, so people would come to you asking for your unique tips :)
This was it for boring general tips x) If you were referring more to what I personally do for my images, then my routine after taking a screenshot is:
• I crop my image to what I need it to look like;
• I run Topaz Clean actions from the post I linked you to;
• Resize to 1200 px wide for my story posts, and to whatever else for the rest of them;
• Run my own sharpen action which is for the High Pass filter of PS;
• At this point I do the basic editing: I fix the contrast/brightness balance, tune the colors to my liking. (I prefer cooler shades of skin for example, and love when my pictures have a little bit of periwinkle/pinkish tint). I mostly use Curves, Levels, Color Balance, Selective Color, Photofilter adjustment levels here, it really depends of the quality of the source image here.
• Next step is my curse, cause I draw shadows, highlights, hair strands on my images. I tried it once, got addicted and I wish I could not be doing it, but alas. I do it by hand on my tablet, it’s time consuming, I wouldn’t recommend 😝
• Final part are overlays I mentioned above, sometimes I make light rays, sometimes I draw dust particles, sometimes I do noise; it all depends.
And that’s about it, I think, I hope it was helpful? :)

MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap: April 17th
202: There’s Something About Nissa (04.13.17) | Durdling Around
Welcome to this week’s subtly blue-mana infused edition! So many things to look at this week, including a look at the spoilers for Amonkhet, more of the Gods and the Planeswalkers that love them, this week’s Magic Story, “The Writing on the Wall,” as well as a minor revision that echoed loudly. And as always there has been some great fan-art from many wonderful artists. Join us under in the desert paradise that is this issue of the Magic: the Gathering Weekly Tumblr Recap.
1. Spoilers for Choice
Forsake the Worldly | Original MTG art by @steveargyle
Wow! The second and final week of Amonkhet spoilers came upon us like a sandstorm. The Amonkhetu pantheon of deities has been filled out with cards for Oketra, Rhonas and Bontu showing us that not all god’s combat restrictions were created equal. Oketra and Rhonas, who have an interest in creatures being present, or simply being big seem to promote a very safe and straightforward playstyle, as opposed to having to have creatures around to kill, or sandbagging 7 cards in your hand, or simply going all out with no cards in hand to respond to your opponent. It remains to be seen if the unusual play styles encouraged by the Grixis gods.
Speaking of Gods, and the Planeswalkers who love them, Nissa, Steward of Elements was also unveiled and was full of surprises. Firstly, a new Nissa planeswalker so soon after her Kaladesh and Planeswalker deck iterations. Secondly she had been shifted to a Green-Blue casting cost, something that had been slowly and subtly infusing her appearances in the story. Finally, Nissa, Steward of Elements marks the first planeswalker card with X in its cost ever! This has the minds of constructed brewers from Standard to Commander percolating with ways to take advantage of this ability.
Gods of Amonkhet | Original MTG art by Chase Stone
With the full spoiler unveiled on Friday, we have an inkling of understanding of the limited archetypes that Amonkhet draft and sealed will offer. From the overwhelmingly grinding value of White and Blue’s embalm themes, to Red and White’s aggressive, go-wide with team pumping effects, it remains to be seen how the speed of the format will play, although signs point in the general direction of a slower format.
As with every time new toys are given to the brew-masters and jank-junkies, new combos and archetypes float around Tumblr, either for magical-christmas-land value that kills on turn 3, or the flavor absurdity of a Heart-Piercer Manticore flinging an Aradara Express to the face of an opponent that it also is driving. (thanks to @transreliquat for that amazing visual)
— Liam W, @coincidencetheories
2. Standard Shakeup?
Gideon of the Trials | Original MtG art by Izzy
Amonkhet is in a fantastic position to shake up Standard, providing competent answers to the two menaces of Standard: Mardu Vehicles, and Saheeli combo.
Gideon may have shouldered a ballista into rubble, but Red has the real automotive issues in Amonkhet! Harsh Mentor is a callback to red’s punisher effects of olde, and punishes your opponent for turning their cars on. By force is a fantastic way to eliminate their vehicles, and scales magnificently.
Saheeli cat didn’t get as many options, but the one answer we got for it is absolute. Trespasser’s curse forbids the combo from even going off for just 2 mana. Alternatively, Haze of Pollen can stop it for a turn, and give you an extra turn to take the combo apart.

2. This Week’s Magic Story Review
The Writing on the Wall by Alison Luhrs
Foul Orchard | Original MTG art by Mark Poole
As the Second Sun inches its way closer to the horns of Bolas on the horizon, the Gatewatch try to make sense of the plane. When we begin the third installment of the Amonkhet story, Nissa has a dream in which she communicates with the soul on the plane. It’s sick, corrupted and crying out for help.
Nissa wakes Chandra up and the two take a walk outside to try and make sense of the city of Naktamun. Everyone seems very young and always training. They encounter Hapatra, who appears to be in her mid 30’s and is the oldest person they’ve seen so far.
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons | Original MTG art by Tyler Jacobson
One of the most interesting things they discover are pictoglyphs on an older building. These pictoglyphs tell of the gods of Amonkhet, but instead of the five we know, there are eight gods. Above the glyphs of the eight gods is a more recently made carving of Bolas’s horns. When Nissa confronts Oketra about this, the god’s reaction is possibly one of the scariest things from this storyline so far: “the cat’s ears twitch back in a moment of fleeting, subconscious fear.” When a god is afraid, things are very wrong.
There’s much more in this story. In a bit there’s a whole section about Nissa/Chandra and the post-publication edit one of their interactions received. But there’s also more to be learned about Amonkhetu sarcophagi. For the world building fans among us, this was a super interesting story, where we are left with more questions than we started. Keep your eyes open for hints in artwork and flavour texts. By next wednesday I hope we get some more revelations about Amonkhet’s history.

3. Gruul-Gate (Chandra x Nissa Discourse)
Trash | Art by @inudono
Shortly after the release of the Magic Story on Wednesday, some Tumblr users noticed that the there was some changes to story. The changes were only a few sentences, but it was a conversation between Nissa and Chandra. Originally, the context in the story appeared to hint that Chandra had romantic feelings towards Nissa, but after the second version went up those implied feelings were hard to detect.
The Community responded with confusion at first. @voiceofallmtg was one of the first blogs to make a post about the change, even showing screenshots of the edit. Others, like @suddenlycomics did not want to express panic until there was an official statement from Wizards. All in all, there was a lot of discussion throughout the Community about the edit in the Magic Story. Others, like @bace-jeleren did express mild frustration, but, like the rest of the Community, wanted to hear what Wizards would say.
Comparison of the two versions, Original on the left, final/updated version on the right | Picture by @bachelor-biomancer
Other discussions that occurred within the Community were about why the Community was even upset about a change in the story. Some had confusion, thinking that the Tumblr users who ship Nissa and Chandra together were disappointed that their pairing wasn’t canon. In reality, it was about representation and some of the Commuity felt cheated that their possible representation was ripped from them with the edits in the Story. Some Tumblr users, like @the-foxwolf, said that the edit is not as big a deal as the Community was expressing becuase the edit changes nothing about the context of the story.
Later in the day there was an official response from @wizardsmagic that helped to alleviate the confusion and frustration about the edit. Wizards stated that there are multiple versions of Magic Stories during the editing process, and that an earlier version was uploaded by mistake and there was no intent to change the context of the conversation. There was relief from the Community that that it was simply a mistake and it remained true to authorial intent. @flavoracle even expressed that is was a “perfectly reasonable explanation.”
Others however, were still upset about the edit in the story, because it still showed that the hints at LGBT+ representation in the Gatewatch is harder to detect in the new version then it was in the older one. Tumblr user @commandtower-solring-go, who asked the question that got the official response from Wizard, made a post , expressing their disappoint at the cuts, because it leaves out details and that “ the original really does a good job to normalise the idea of non-straight relationships in the multiverse.” All in all, there were a lot of mixed emotions from the Community in regard to the Magic Story change.
What do you, the Community, think? Do you like the original version or the new version better? Do you think there is a change in context, or is the intent of the conversation still there?
— Chelsea W, @chelsea-beleren-vess
4. When It Hits the Fan-Art
Gideon Seeking | Original art by @oddsbod
It’s painting cats and dogs this week! With all the danger and menace and thrilling action on Amonkhet and the Trials of the Gods, @jakaltimes took on a more sedate subject, the Sacred Cat and the Flameblade Adept. On a similar theme, @sticksandsharks gives an interpretation of Hazoret and Oketra. and from this week’s Magic Story, The Writing on the Wall, @hirafel gives us a short animation of the unexpected breakfast visitor,
The Gatewatch feature heavily this week, with offerings such as @erybiadraws‘s Happy Gideon, @sketchydoodles‘s Amonkhet Nissa, Jace by @0x00fj and a cheeky Liliana, by @circlesmadeofglass
Finally for the retro crowd, we have a series of pixel-art masterpieces from @the-panther4444, looking either like an authentic early 90s dungeon crawler, or possibly MTGO’s latest graphics update.
— Liam W, @coincidencetheories
5. Quoth the RavenMan

…and finally: An Historic Absence?
@askkrenko makes the point that with the absence of Goblins in Innistrad, Kaladesh and Amonkhet, the last Standard legal goblins were released in Oath of the Gatewatch. While there have been absences of varying length before, the regularity of goblins in the core set means that Goblins have always been in standard even before standard was a format (looking retroactively). However, if the currently unknown plane that follows the Hour of Devastation, it is entirely possible that we will have the first Goblin-less standard in Magic history. Perhaps we will find out when announcement day comes in June, perhaps we will remain in suspense…
Thank you again for reading this week’s issue of the MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap. Hope to see you next week!

▌a review: Book of the Atlantic
~read after the jump at your own risk~ Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic 劇場版「黒執事 Book of the Atlantic」
Alright, this post contains very specific spoilers for the new film in Japan!
I’ve watched it twice during the premiere weekend. I’m writing this as a personal keepsake for myself, but am allowing others to read, share, and discuss. For the love of all things kuro, read at your own risk!!
I recommend you bookmark all reviews, and wait to read them until after you watch the movie yourself.
I promise you it will be worth the wait when you can just enjoy the experience yourself first!!
If you want a tl;dr basic little review, see the first point. If you want to spoil yourself rotten with each and every specific detail that stood out to me in whatever way, skip down to the second point. Your own risk!!
basic review
The movie was beautifully animated despite having spare brief moments of questionable budget. It moved in a steady pace without feeling too slow or fast, and felt like a creepy thriller. It is packed with violence, gore, and a threat of danger. All of the major scenes and moments that make the Campania arc complete were included in the film, and I loved it enough to watch it multiple times in one weekend. I would watch it a third time in theatres and will definitely preorder the bluray and soundtrack!
a very detailed spoiler review
warning: there are spoilers after this jump & it is a long read. bring tea.
Updates
8-26-2017 ♞【 “That butler, resting” blu-ray comic translation 】 8-25-2017 ♞【 Japanese blu-ray release 】 8-25-2017 ♞【 I’m creating & linking edits that coincide with this review! 】
a very detailed spoiler review
The Campania arc is my favorite arc of this series, however I didn't go into the movie with any expectations other than Sebastian’s cinematic record being as sharp as the end of his butter knives. I wanted Yana Toboso to do what she and the production team do best, and I’m happy to say I am a satisfied fan!
Immediate Impressions what stood out to me
The animation is clean and sharp, but with brief, varying moments of questionable budget. The team utilizes various styles of animation to tell the story, specifically during certain points of comic relief, Undertaker’s explanation of the dead bodies, scenes of Sebastian demoning, and Sebastian’s demon-to-butler debut within the cinematic record
Everyone was beautifully cast! I really enjoyed all of the voice actors, new and returning. I’m most impressed with Undertaker, Sebastian, and Ciel in that order, for various reasons listed in my favorite moments. I also loved seeing Knox and Snake on screen~!
EYE PORN (the enhanced, dramatic, and intense focus of a character’s eyes). There is so much eye porn and I live for it; I can’t wait for tumblr to get a hand on this film. I see so many edits and gif sets and art flooding my future dash. Specifically impressed with Sebastian, Ciel, and Undertaker’s eyes in this movie and the various angles, styles, hues, and reflections they all gave. Sebastian had so many gorgeous, deadly, and very unique hues of red throughout the entire film, and the most distinct scene of them is the close up to his eyes as the first deceased body is being resurrected. Ciel’s contracted eye was flawless in each scene it is exposed, and seeing reflections hidden within his blue orb really intensifies the anxiety and fear he’s feeling during the scene when Undertaker was going to give a fatal blow to Sebastian ━【 ♞ 】
For the Undertaker stans… you all are not ready. You’re just not; you won’t ever be. Accept this. Just sit back and accept this gift and drown in your fandom feelings during his entire reveal scene. Bless. ━【 ♞ 】
Lizzie’s reveal touched me in so many ways!! Seeing Lizzie in action on screen for the first time… The anime downplays her character, but she redeems herself so much from the bad portrayals of the anime. And when babygirl started running on the walls...yes. It was a bit odd at first, but it worked, and I LOVED seeing her elegant foot and wristwork as she slayed
Sebastian makes so many facial expressions and I died from each one either with laughter or awe
Favorite Scenes & Tiny Moments there’s a lot
when Knox dodges Sebastian’s knives (favorite gif)
the look on Sebastian’s face when Knox was like “k bye, gotta go” after their fight – priceless ━【 ♞ 】
the utterly confused look on Snake’s face when Rian Stoker escaped into the elevator (I need this screenshot) ━【 ♞ 】
the Undertaker’s silhouette reflecting in Ciel’s enlarged, fearful blue eye because Undertaker was about to slice into Sebastian a second time (I need to make a sebaciel appreciation post about this scene right here) ━【 ♞ 】
the vulnerable quivering voice from Ciel during the night terrors scene of Sebastian’s cinematic record...I believed his fear and hearing Sebastian soothe him not only with the warm milk & honey but just the way he spoke to him...
actually, the entire cinematic record and their verbal exchanges
Lizzie’s entire reveal scene, from start to when Sebastian stops her finish
just hearing Sebastian apologize to people over and over again, especially Lizzie when she’s the one doing the work in the reveal scene, and the truly pained, disappointed-in-himself look that’s on his face as he does so
Sebastian’s extended laugh when Ciel is flustered by Lizzie after they battle Knox and Grell
Sebastian knocking Lizzie out with that hand ━【 ♞ 】
Sebastian dripping over those blueprints and then redressing himself
When Sebastian and Ciel take turns wanting to kill/wait to kill Druitt
Undertaker’s voice as he give his infamous lines during his reveal
Undertaker revealing his death scythe & every fight scene with him in it ━【 ♞ tba 】
the growl Sebastian makes while reaching for Undertaker when he took Ciel
when Sebastian mastered how to kill intruders silently in his cinematic record, holding the knife to that guy’s neck just like the manga scan (Died.) ━【 ♞ 】
when Undertaker smirked right before taking his death scythe and attacked the Campania
when Sebastian punched Knox and got right into his face just like the manga scan after Ciel vouched for his demon (Died. Screens and gifs, please. Please.) ━【 ♞ I 】//【 ♞ tba II 】
I FORGOT TO ADD THIS!! when Lizzie jumped on Ciel and started to nuzzle his shoulder and cry on him because she was sooooo thankful he survived!!! and then the look on Sebastian’s face as he watched them embracing!! MY HEART!!! ━【 ♞ 】
Alterations From the Manga ...that I could catch or remember
Charles Grey and Charles Phipps make an appearance (think we all got this one)
Ciel does not tell Snake to not be ashamed of his appearance
Snake is the one who jumps on the boxes and tells Elizabeth and Ciel to move higher up with him (from what I remember, Elizabeth is up with him but Ciel stays down to shoot at zombies, and Snake calls down at Ciel to join them). In the manga, Ciel is the one who takes charge there for everyone to ascend higher, and this stood out to me in the manga
Tanaka, Madame Red, and Nina’s scenes do not appear in Sebastian’s cinematic record. The focus is entirely in Sebastian’s point of view and the cinematic record scene does take a good 10-15 minutes (it really felt like it did) of precious screen time, so I am personally not upset by this decision of the animators. It doesn’t take away from the overall experience of the film, unless one of these characters are your absolute favorite : /
I’m not a big fan of the scene when Sebastian kisses Ciel’s hand; it looks like he’s smiling at it but in the manga it’s a direct kiss. It’s not a huge discrepancy but, I noticed. However I did thoroughly enjoy the cinematic record
The Midfords make an appearance, but we do not see them kick some serious ass the way Elizabeth does. Their scene is rather brief; when Sebastian asks if everyone is safe and informs them of how to defeat the monsters, they slice into their heads and that’s it. They introduce themselves just as in the manga, but once Sebastian leaves we don’t see any fighting from them again
We don’t see Lizzie or Snake doing the Phoenix pose
We don’t see Grell try to give Ronald his glasses back; Ronald recovers them himself
Interesting Discrepancies ...that I could catch or remember
Since Tanaka doesn’t appear in the cinematic record, I found it odd that Sebastian transitions from calling Ciel ご主人様 (master) to 坊ちゃん (young master, originally coined by Tanaka). Tanaka is the one who taught 坊ちゃん to Sebastian and the language shift stood out immediately for me because I enjoy this series in Japanese much more than in English. I would have liked to see Tanaka in the scene, or at least have Sebastian not utilize 坊ちゃん during the rest of the record since it was cut. It’s tiny but important to me and I could go into more detail about that and all of the sebaciel of the film in a separate post
It is a little obvious in certain places of the film where there was a limited or extinguished(?) budget for the animation, but nothing that takes away from the overall quality of the film, in my opinion
We finally see where Sebastian’s hand went in that one bathroom scene, however it is not exactly aligned the way it is in the manga. His hand is on the small of his back in the film; in the manga it is hidden by a speech bubble in unspoken territory but you can clearly see Ciel’s waist is hand-free
Closing Thoughts
I walked away from this movie so appreciative for this arc finally being released in anime-form, and choosing to make it a movie was a wise and fruitful decision. This movie will feed the Sebaciel and Ciel x Lizzie fans very, very well, and a I have a new appreciation for my favorite characters!!
I also will say...I loved Undertaker in the arc, but he wasn’t in my top tier of priority characters. However, leading up to the movie I noticed I’ve been reblogging enough of him to make his own tag. After seeing this reveal in action I’m probably going to be a little obsessed with the character until I can see him fight again; it was so beautiful~!
Whenever you all get the chance to watch this, please feel free to stop by and share your own thoughts and opinions in a note, tag or my inbox!!
