"Rescue me from the mire; do not let me sink." During the fourth iteration of 1899, when everyone thought him gone for good, one Sir Edison Hollingsworth draws himself from the depths of literary circles, and leaves, in the wake of his passing, the pages of a manuscript. Nobody sees him deliver these pages, mind — some believe it was an individual rifling around in the ashy remnants of his home, publishing the details of his life posthumously, whereas others imagine it is the Laureate's final bow on the Neath's stage, to, perhaps, show them what-for. This autobiography is no letter to anyone, and, yet, it is a letter to all; one might call it a cautionary tale, or a sob, adrift on a sea of misery.

The USA Trilogy
So I've been reading John dos Passos's USA Trilogy and despite being only 500 pages away from finishing I'm thinking I might not be able to. It's a highly recommended trilogy - some peope say that it's the Great American Novel - but my god.
The novel has four different sorts of sections: biographies of various American figures, collages of newspaper headlines and articles, an apparently autobiographical section with a horrible postmodern aversion to capital letters and punctuation marks, and the actual story, which follows about a dozen people over the course of the early decades of the twentieth century.
First, the pros: the newspaper collages work quite well, giving a taste of events in the world at large as the narrative advances. The biographies are sometimes quite interesting when focusing on lesser known figures or, the absolute masterpiece of the trliogy, "The Body of an American Soldier", which is something of a multiple choice past for the man interred in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It's incredibly written and a genuinely touching critique of the senselessness of war.
Further, there's a few interesting main characters. Mac, the first one introduced, is about as sympathetic as a drifter can be with the values dissonance of a century between us and has a storyline that has a relatively traditional arc of rising action, climax, and falling action. Eveline getting re-examined by the transition from Eleanor's friend to POV character of her own works very well, to the point where I will miss not getting to see her from a third POV in the next novel since I'm cutting it short.
That said, the flaws are a lot. The "Camera Eye", the autobigraphical stuff, is completely unreadable because skipping half of the necessary steps of English writing leaves an incoherent, unpleasant mess. E. E. Cummings (yes, capitals included) and all who humor him are a blight on the English language.
The other biographies are hit or miss because so many of them barely seem to have anything to do with the narration. Eugene Debs works because every character is a socialist (more on that in a mo'). Thomas Edison has nothing to do with anything except in the sense that many scenes in the novel have lightbulbs present.
Then sadly there's the main narration. The work is very existentialist, stuff just happening for the sake of happening, and while that's not necessarily a problem, it turns out I can't really take the better part of 2,000 pages of it even spread out among 12 assholes.
And they're basically all assholes. Some only barely - Daughter seems to be capricious mostly in that "male writer feels women are incomprehensible" sort of way - some entirely so. Frankly, with all the talk of socialism and revolution and pacifism that comes out of their mouths while they drink, party, and look for ways to screw everyone over makes me long for THEM to be lined up against the wall. And of course they're all sellouts to boot, which again isn't exactly a problem it's just that it leaves me with even less reason to stick around. I know how this ends: the ones who get rich like Moorehouse abandon all pretense of caring for their fellow human beings and the ones who stay poor look for any excuse to avoid taking responsibility for their behavior.
If the books had some broader point than the upcoming failure of the socialist movement in the US, I might be able to stick it out. If I could get more than a chapter without seeing a racial slur, I could stick it out. If the dialogue wasn't written with every accent spelled out, I could stick it out. But honestly I think that getting to "Body of an American Soldier" is victory enough and I'm done. It's a shame, but I've spent the last two nights avoiding reading because I absolutely did not want to open "The Big Money", and since I'm just getting back into the habit again I need to move on.

Gary Vaynerchuk – A Narcissist Lying Jerk
Gary Vaynerchuk, the name needs no introduction. If you take interest in entrepreneurship and online businesses then you must have come across this name at some point. He is a serial entrepreneur and a jerk, which lies without hesitation. For some people, success is too much to handle. Gary is one of them. He is an inspiration to many. He does shows, travels, and publishes content on multiple platforms. But his real side is quite different from what you see online. The popular Gary Vaynerchuk is a real heartless arrogant fool, who treats his employees like pieces of shit. You see him preaching all this knowledge about life and entrepreneurship online and start thinking,” He’s a great person.” But the truth is, he isn’t a great person in any sense. I’m an entrepreneur myself. I run a digital services agency and I can tell you with full certainty that Gary is an arrogant and egoistic narcissist. The world has very few deranged specimens like Gary. You won’t find such arrogant narcissists often. He talks about starting businesses and being a good person but he doesn’t follow his words. He is a hypocrite. He cost my agency thousands of dollars through unpaid bills. If he really was the guy he claims to be, he wouldn’t have cheated a fellow entrepreneur. It’s important that people know the true identity of Gary Vaynerchuk. This guy is too full of himself. He might blow up one day because of the amount of ego filled in his small head. Working with him is a nightmare. He is a poor employer, a hypocrite and one of the worst human beings. He lacks the basic manners and the basic values of a proper businessman. He keeps lying online and people buy it. I was also fooled by the glitz and glamour of his online personality. If you would go somewhere and say something against Gary, you will get trolled by hundreds of thousands of wanna-be entrepreneurs. These fools don’t know the reality of Gary and follow his words blindly. Gary is proof that you can maintain a good online persona with lies. He is a cheat and a pathetic human being. This article will throw some more light on his devious acts so you can take a look at his other side. He shows the lifestyle of a CEO but he doesn’t show the full reality. The worst thing that can ever happen to a professional is when he or she has to work with Gary. I have worked with him (through VaynerMedia) and I assure you, it’s a nightmare. You should know the true face of this public hero. Someone has to speak the truth. Let it be me today.
History of Gary Vaynerchuk
Gary is a popular online celebrity. He speaks on entrepreneurship and the hustle of the same. You might have heard about him from some other ‘entrepreneur’ or a wanna-be entrepreneur. According to his website, he and his family came to the US from Belarus in 1978. His family had 8 members who used to live in Queens, New York. Later, they relocated to Edison, New Jersey. After telling about his origins, his biography starts praising him (clearly indicating his narcissism). It states: “Gary often calls himself a purebred entrepreneur” Why? Well, because he successfully started a lemonade stand at the age of 7 and then sold baseball cards and toys in high school, which were worth over tens of thousands of dollars. He took advantage of the rise of the internet and converted his father’s liquor store into an e-commerce platform. That’s his one of his biggest achievements in his life. Like I told you, success has gone over Gary’s head and has damaged his thinking ability. I believe, Gary can’t even think straight now. His story, which is mentioned on his website, keeps praising him endlessly. Talk about humility and humbleness. These words don’t exist in Gary’s dictionary. His bio continues and says that Gary grew his father’s liquor business from $3 to $60 million. He used to upload content constantly on WineLibraryTV (a YouTube channel), which helped him make appearances on Ellen and Conan’s shows. Why am I telling you all this? Because you should know how an egoistic person like Gary keeps feeding his ego. He doesn’t hesitate in praising himself at any moment. He just doesn’t stop. The problem with his bio is, it doesn’t give any details about his life story in reality. It is all about Gary’s achievements. He has sold bestselling books, he owns multiple businesses and he has invested in many major companies of the digital age including Facebook and Uber. You can read his bio numerous times and every time, you will notice some more pieces of his praise. Gary is a big celebrity; there is no doubt about that. But he is a liar, a deviant, a cheat and an arrogant fool too. I’m not the only one who is saying all this. His past employees, colleagues and business partners hate him. He doesn’t know how to behave and he treats everyone like crap. He has zero sense of professionalism. All he really cares about is himself. The problem with Gary is, he is a major influencer and millions of people follow his advice. Those people don’t know that their hero Gary doesn’t know how to treat his employees properly. His company’s culture is disgraceful and having worked with him for some time, I can say for certain that Gary doesn’t treat his subordinates like human beings.
How VaynerMedia Cheated Me
I own a simple digital services agency based in Los Angeles. We provide graphic designing and creation services primarily. Gary’s company had hired us for some projects related to logo design and graphic design of a website. Apparently, they needed some experienced professionals and they did not have the required talent in-house. I was excited to work with him. Like many entrepreneurs, I too was a fan of Gary’s work and his ideology. Little did I know, that Gary is actually a real life jerk whose company ‘forgets’ to make payments. They gave us the project details, we worked on it and delivered it 1 week before the deadline. Everything was great up to that point. We then asked his company ‘VaynerMedia’ to make the payment for the provided services. They forgot. They kept ignoring our requests and our messages. At one point, I got to talk to Gary himself, and I was shocked by the kind of reception I got. He was talking to me as if I was a deranged animal. He has no sense of respect for others. He treats other human beings like trash. And when I got to know this side of his, my whole perspective about him changed. I have heard him saying that he wants to be the ‘good’ example of entrepreneurship. Everyone knows that Steve Jobs was a jerk and Gary says he wants to set an example that you can be a good entrepreneur without being a jerk. Well, world, the bad news is, Gary himself is an overrated jerk. He doesn’t hesitate in calling people names or start talking to them rudely for no specific reasons. My agency waited for 5 months to finally get the payment for our services. And we still didn’t receive the complete payment. Our bill was of $60,000, and we only received $25,000. According to the accountants at VaynerMedia, we had only done the services of $25,000. When I contacted them to discuss the issue, I got the same kind of reply from his customer support. They started talking rudely and saying that I should know where I belong and that I better stop disturbing them. Apparently, the time of his customer support is spent on other affairs than handling customers. I hated every second of my conversation with his customer support. My agency lost $35,000 because of VaynerMedia. Gary’s company is a disgrace to the industry. Sometimes, I can’t even believe that I used to think of Gary as my inspiration. He had motivated me to start my business. But he himself is a pathetic liar. He is a hypocrite and he is lying to every one of his followers. He has created a fake personality online of the ‘cool guy’. In reality, he is just a disgruntled middle-aged man, whose success has gone over his head. He is too arrogant and that affects his productivity. And my complaint is not that he is a pathetic human being. No, my complaint is his company VaynerMedia, which is only successful because it has the name ‘Vayner’ attached to it, is full of people like him. They all are a**holes and low-minded individuals. They all lack the basic manners of normal conversations and they all are too arrogant to talk to. I mean, the way his staff disrespected me and my company was too much for me to cope with. I stopped asking them for my payments because of their poor response. We just marked VaynerMedia as one of the blacklisted companies with which we will never work in the future. A loss of $35,000 is substantial for any creative agency. There’s no way to find out how many companies Gary has scammed this way. He has become a celebrity now and he knows that his one word can make or break a brand. That’s why many companies don’t say anything about Gary or his poor company. They are afraid that Gary may call them out and they get defamed. Gary has a strong following and he can use it to destroy the reputation of any company. Why is he still so popular? Apart from his numerous successes, Gary has written multiple best sellers. He has 5 best sellers under his name. He runs multiple companies, one of which is VaynerMedia, which doesn’t pay other companies. My problem with Gary and his company is simple: Stop lying to others. His web of lies is too large. His whole online personality is a lie. He conducts shows, meets people, runs a podcast, posts videos on YouTube and shares a lot of content. But still, he is lying everywhere. This deviant stole money from my small business, and then called me names because I was disturbing him. His company steals money. And I am certain that I’m not the only victim of Gary’s wrongdoings. Gary claims to be a good person and a nice human being but that’s another lie. If he starts telling the truth, he wouldn’t remain the popular celebrity he is right now.
Allegations and Complaints
I’m not the only person who has suffered the consequences of working with Gary and his company. There are many other people who hate the time they spent with their company. Gary’s company, VaynerMedia had hired my agency for some freelance work. But when you’ll take a look at the reviews of this company’s past employees, you will see that the number of agitated people is quite high. The lack of professionalism and an overrated leader makes his company (or companies) one of the worst places to work. People look up to the CEO as an inspiration. And when the CEO treats everyone like shit, it’s obvious for some people to mirror his style. As a result, many of the superior executives treat their subordinates as slaves. They would yell, call names and force the person to overwork. They do all that just to look good in the eyes of their superiors. The number of negative reviews of his companies is very high. And that’s when Gary puts a ton of effort and spends a lot of money in removing the negative reviews posted against his company. He maintains a fake online persona and these negative reviews hurt the same. I have seen my review gets removed for no specific reason. This jerk and his worthless company cost me $35,000 so I had shared my story on multiple platforms. But for some reason, they got removed or they got buried so deep that they became impossible to find. Let me share some of his past employees’ reviews so you can get an idea of what it’s like to work for this arrogant fool:
Tumblr media
One complaint is about the culture of his office. The person says that everyone is too hostile and looking for ways to get ahead. If you did something good, chances are, your whole team will try to take the credit for it, and your superiors will take the entire credit themselves leaving you with nothing. On the other hand, if you make a mistake, you will get all the blame, your team wouldn’t even consider sharing the consequences. No, you would be left alone to face the punishment. And do you know why that is? Because Gary himself is of this nature. He doesn’t give credit to anyone else for anything. He markets himself like a God, who works miraculously and has achieved superhuman feats. In reality, he uses other people’s talents, minds and resources and gives them zero credit for the same. When he hired our creative agency it was because he didn’t have any experienced graphic designers in VaynerMedia. His company didn’t pay us the full amount of the bill and then expected us to shut up. They never responded to our queries later and the way they handled the issue was terrible. The complaint I shared above isn’t the only one. Another freelancer who has worked him raised the concerns of late payments and inconsistent work allocation.
Tumblr media
This freelancer says that the management of this firm is always in haste and doesn’t respond to your questions. The new hires don’t know how to work properly and the communication in this organization is severely flawed. Once you complete the work, they will release your payment after 30 days, which is against the freelancing laws in New York. This freelancer must have also faced harsh treatment from the officials at VaynerMedia. There are countless complaints against Gary’s companies. One other past employee discusses how poor is the working schedule in Gary’s company. Your work/life balance will get ruined completely when you will start working for Gary’s company. Why? Because Gary believes that everyone should work 24/7. Even though he has others to do all of his tasks, he doesn’t care what kind of life you lead.
Tumblr media
This complainer shares that the office is just like high school. Clearly, there is no professionalism or proper work ethic in VaynerMedia. You should note that all of these complaints are about only one of his companies. You can imagine how many people would be leading unhealthy and stressed out lives because they are working under this maniac. And if you think your hard work will get rewarded, you are mistaken. I have already discussed how your superiors take all the credit for your work in this organization and put your name ahead only when there is some error or mistake so you can be blamed for the same. Gary’s companies aren’t for professionals. If you are a normal human with self-respect, then you would hate working under this guy. He yells, uses harsh words and to mimic him, your superiors do the same. As a result, you get a random work schedule with no incentive whatsoever and a continuous drain of your self-respect. In another complaint, a person shares the reality of the office politics present in VaynerMedia.
Tumblr media
The complainer tells that VaynerMedia has an excess of employees, who aren’t smart and experienced enough for their results. As a result, there is always chaos in the office leading to unproductive hours and wastage of resources. The bosses believe in favouritism and you are forced to work hard without any rewards. Most of the times, your hard work will go unnoticed. If you don’t know how to suck up to your boss, you will stay behind while some untalented guy will get a promotion over you. The number of under-qualified yet promoted individuals is too high in this company. Gary follows most of his philosophies here and due to them, employees at the lower end of the chain have to work the hardest. Another complaint is about the low compensation and the poor culture of Gary’s company.
Tumblr media
The leadership doesn’t know what to do and hard work goes unrewarded. The complainer also shares that the HR support and the finance department are pathetic. In all of these complaints, you will find simpler problems being expressed just only in different words. It’s clear that Gary lies all the time and he is nowhere near the mark of being a ‘good’ entrepreneur. He is a narcissist, who has no sense of humanity. He can’t run his own company properly and he is teaching wrong values to hundreds of thousands of young minds throughout the globe. I can go on and on about Gary and his company and there would be no end to his malicious acts. One of his past employees also wrote a negative review of the low-minded superiors present in the company. It’s clear that his companies are the worst ones to work for and there is no real reason for one to praise him. The management of all of his companies is worse than many third world companies. Gary talks about making the world a better place but he doesn’t pay his employees properly. He is a FRAUD and the worst thing is, millions of people are falling prey to this scammer.
Conclusion
I don’t want any other business or agency to lose money to Gary. He is a cheat, an outright liar and a narcissist who is too full of himself. He stole my $35,000 and his companies have one of the worst working conditions in the market. Just because he is successful, it doesn’t give him the right to lie and cheat people. His online persona is far from the truth. Don’t you think that he should be held accountable for his employee’s poor conditions? Shouldn’t he face consequences for lying to millions of people online?
10 Millionaire Books for Entrepreneurs
As an entrepreneur with big goals, you dream of success and one day becoming a millionaire. You want financial independence. You want the means to enjoy a nice lifestyle. So how do you achieve your dreams?
One of the best ways to get started and stay on track is to read books about millionaires. We’re talking about books with rags-to-riches stories to inspire you and grow your confidence. We’re also talking about books that offer practical advice for investing and making smart financial decisions.
This is our recommended reading list of the 10 best books for any ambitious entrepreneur to build the confidence to slay dragons and become a millionaire.
1. Total Money Makeover
by Dave Ramsey
Dave Ramsey is the reigning king of financial management for everyday Americans. Ramsey has built a personal finance empire — with millions of daily radio show listeners, personal finance courses, books, and even a budgeting app called Every Dollar. Ramsey himself went from bankruptcy to multi-millionaire status. No one wants to be broke, and Ramsey’s system has helped people control their spending habits, become debt-free, and build wealth.
Your net worth is less about how much you earn, and more about how much you spend. If you want to achieve your business goals the first step is to get out of the pressure of being in debt and worrying about money all the time. That’s the reason for including Total Money Makeover at the top of this list. You must get your spending habits under control — personally and also in your business. Until you control the outflow of money, it’s going to be hard to accrue real wealth.
2. The Millionaire Next Door
by Thomas J. Stanley, PhD
A millionaire is less like a billionaire or celebrity — and more like your next-door neighbor. In fact, you could have millionaires in your neighborhood and not even realize it. They often don’t live in the biggest houses or drive the flashiest cars. They know the difference between having a million dollars and spending a million dollars. Based on voluminous research, that’s what this groundbreaking book demonstrates.
The Millionaire Next Door was one of the earlier books to advance the notion that the way to gain wealth and happiness is to first be smart about spending. People have to first grow their assets, instead of living like high rollers before they actually have the money. The people of means outlined in the book are not denying themselves nice lives. But they have deferred gratification until getting their finances in order.
3. Everyday Millionaires
by Chris Hogan
Chris Hogan is an expert in wealth building, and it is this expertise which he brings to this book along with his extensive research. This research reveals you don’t have to come from money or have a high income to be a millionaire. The secret, which is no longer a secret, is working hard and staying focused.
The Chris Hogan Everyday Millionaires book is based on the research of 10,000 millionaires. This book debunks myths about millionaires, including their attitudes and behaviors. If you want an inside look into how an everyday millionaire thinks and acts, this is an excellent book. You might just be surprised because you’ve been making assumptions. While there are many books on the market about millionaires, if you want to get inside the heads of thousands of millionaires to follow their examples, this is the book.
4. Rich Dad Poor Dad
by Robert Kiyosaki
More than 23 years after it was first published, Robert Kiyosaki’s book still resonates with readers. The unconventional approach and advice he provides is the key to success. Challenging established norms and focusing on the mindset of being rich are some of his methodologies people use to this day.
One of the best things about Rich Dad Poor Dad is that it teaches about the concept of assets. In the U.S. we hear about credit cards and how big a loan we can take out to buy a house. We’re taught conspicuous spending as if spending is a good goal. What we’re not taught is to think of spending money to build up our assets — things with lasting value. A startup or small business is an asset, and until we think of it that way we won’t appreciate how operating a business can transform our personal wealth.
5. The Latte Factor
by David Bach
David Bach has written nine best sellers about personal finance. The Latte Factor shows people may have more financial resources than they think. This book outlines simple steps for people who want financial freedom and to achieve the American Dream. It’s about paying yourself first — by saving and investing to see your money grow.
This book demonstrates the value of not wasting small amounts of money. Invested over time, money adds up. The book is structured as a parable or story about one young millennial woman named Zoey. Each day she buys a double-shot latte while staring at a painting she thinks she can’t afford. She feels like she doesn’t have the money for the things she really wants (like an expensive painting) but it’s actually because she lacks a plan and spends too much money on discretionary items (like daily lattes).
Entrepreneurs, think about it. Are you doing the same thing in your business? Are you frittering away your resources on small ideas without investing in goals that will build lasting value?
6. Think and Grow Rich
by Napoleon Hill
First published in 1937, this book has sold more than 15 million copies. The philosophies it espouses including the “Law of Success” have been followed by many successful entrepreneurs in the decades since its publication. The 13 steps to riches are the result of interviewing 500 of the most successful people at the time, according to the author. This includes everyone from Thomas Edison to Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, John D Rockefeller, and many others.
Many people have called Think and Grow Rich a life-changing book. Perhaps the best thing it does is inspire. You can gain a mentality and thought process for lifelong changes in how you deal with money. The principles in it are fundamentals like setting goals and the importance of a positive thought process. Napoleon Hill was a character who may have fabricated some claims about his biography and anecdotes in the book. But remember, there’s a reason this book is a classic. Everyone should read it for the transformative attitude it brings.
7. Built to Sell
by John Warrillow
Built to Sell is about how to create a business that can thrive without you — the owner — doing everything. This book follows a fictional business owner, Alex, who runs a struggling marketing firm. Alex starts getting advice from a mentor and friend. Alex eventually turns the business around by changing his business model to one of recurring revenue streams. As a result, he spends less time personally working in the business, and his company builds enough value that he is able to sell it.
You might be tempted to think this book is similar to the 4 Hour Work Week, by Tim Ferriss, because the subtitle mentions the business thriving without the owner — but it’s not. Built to Sell focuses much more on creating enough lasting value to be able to sell the business. Let’s face it, as business owners, most of our wealth is tied up in our companies. If you want an exit strategy where you can cash out, you need a plan. This book explains how to get to that 7 or 8 figure payout.
Read our review of Built to Sell.
8. The Highest Calling
by Larry Janesky
The Highest Calling‘s description says it is “an inspirational novel about business and life, struggle and success.” This book is really a business advice book wrapped in a story about Troy Becker, the fictional owner of a remodeling business. Troy works 70 hours a week, his family life is suffering, and he can’t seem to get ahead. Then one day a mysterious mentor enters Troy’s life and starts advising him how to create a business with more value along with more personal satisfaction.
In real life, The Highest Calling‘s author became wildly successful in a mundane industry, basement waterproofing. He founded a nationwide business with annual revenues in the 9 figures. He knows what he is talking about. If you think the one and only way to gain money is through a high tech business and not a regular small business, think again. Once you put in place systems and processes and get your priorities straight, success will ensue. Follow the book’s advice and work toward a profitable business that puts you on the path to millionaire status.

9. Built Not Born
by Tom Golisano
Built not Born is an entrepreneur advice book by billionaire Tom Golisano, the founder of Paychex. Golisano started his company with $3,000 in 1971, showing he is a self-made man. The book is a 50-year account of his experiences as a businessman who started as a small business and turned it into a multi-billion dollar company.
Tom Golisano is a billionaire, but this book is not a billionaire’s vanity project. Built Not Born offers lessons in achieving greatness that can translate into your personal net worth. 10. Jim Cramer’s Get Rich Carefully
by Jim Cramer
Get Rich Carefully is about investing in the stock market. It’s an entertaining and practical book for people who fit into the definition of “average retail investor” (which describes most of us). If you are a person who wants to understand more about investing without getting buried in boring balance sheets, Cramer’s book is a good place to start. And like Cramer, the man who we see on television, the book is entertaining. This is a common-sense approach to investments and how to understand fundamentals.
On many lists, you will see investment books such as The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. That book is a classic and revered by self-made billionaires like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. However, that book seems written for a different time. Cramer’s book is a more relevant, easier-to-read substitute today in a world of automated trading and politics-driven market swings. Even if you are one of those investors who prefer to choose index funds or buy real estate, Cramer puts the markets in perspective.
Conclusion
For entrepreneurs, business books can teach you the right moves to build value that can be transformed into personal wealth. Lifelong learning is essential in the business world. There’s a reason millionaires read books. The best books:
Inspire you to a positive mindset. Great books fire you up to achieve great things.
Teach the right money moves. Positive inspiration is one thing, but knowing what to do and how to do it is essential.
Focus your attention. When you “lean in” on goals and dreams, you are more likely to achieve them and gain power.
In America anyone can become a millionaire with the right mindset and a will to succeed. Don’t you deserve to live the American Dream (no matter where you are located)? Read these 10 best books for money-focused entrepreneurs. When you’re done with these, check out other books from authors such as Mark Cuban and Vicki Robin.

Distinctive Similarities of Eight Quirky Innovators I’ve previously read biographies of Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Elon Musk, Benjamin Franklin, and Albert Einstein, so I was fascinated to read about the distinctive similarities between each of their bios as well as those of Marie Curie, Dean Kamen, and Nikola Tesla. Further, I appreciated that the author didn’t just look back at history; she also gave clues for discovering and developing future inventors. Go to Amazon
A great book for managers, inventors, entrepreneurs, researchers… and parents Quirky is a truly great book. There is surprisingly little research on what makes people like Elon Musk, Marie Curie, Nikolas Tesla, Albert Einstein, or Steve Jobs extraordinarily innovative. Melissa Schilling, a world leading authority on innovation and a chaired professor at New York University, addresses that gap. In this book we learn what makes an Elon Musk an Elon Musk. Go to Amazon
Loved this book Seriously, this book is so fascinating. I learned so much from it, and am even putting up Ben Franklin's 13 Virtues which Schilling discusses on my wall. The whole book was a great introduction to some of the best scientific/innovative minds and what they (mostly) shared in common, but I especially enjoyed learning about Marie Curie. The obstacles she faced due to circumstance (gender, death of her husband, and more) were enormous, yet she still won two Nobel Prizes, and in different fields no less. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the people who helped shape our world today and what made them so uniquely influential and successful. Go to Amazon
A great narrative with deep insights into these amazing innovation pioneers This book does several things extremely well at the same time. First, the author, a business school professor and academic, grounds the arguments in research, so that we can be confident that the observations have solid evidence behind them. Second, the book brings out some really interesting observations about these amazingly innovative and pioneering people. I learned a lot by diving into the various observations and insights. Third, the narrative on the page is so well written, I just kept going and didn't want to stop going through the book. This is a rare combination: academically grounded (by an academic innovation expert), deep insights, and a great read about how these remarkable and historic figures invented and discovered science, technologies, products and services that we all benefit from today. If you are looking to read about innovation, history, high-tech, science, and such topics, look no further. Highly recommended. Go to Amazon
A delightful work by Melissa Schilling In Quirky, Melissa Schilling brings eight famous innovators into your hands so you can know them and how they broke through "impossible" barriers. She exposes insights into their gifted genius, often with self education, fascinating families ("My mother was the making of me", Edison), work ethics (the "flow" or "pleasure of work"), and circumstances they overcame (through self-efficacy) to break through barriers. Quirky contains connections that are both intriguing and useful for the reader to ponder and apply. For example, Elon Musk read all the books in his public library by age 12, a tremendous fact. From this, it seem logical that his appetite for self-education would allow him to design reusable rockets, making space travel economical, as a total outsider of the space industry that told him "you can't do that." Ben Franklin, Nickola Tesla, Marie Curie, and Dean Kamen sought to improve people's lives with their inventions and innovations, and were not motivated by a love of money -- wow did they achieve a lot pursuing noble goals, (e.g., Ben Franklin's bifocals are still common today, and Curie's mobile X-Ray may have saved 1 Million soldiers in WWI). Overall, you will be glad you've read this book! I am. Go to Amazon
Quirky is a wonderful book and every person should learn the stories of ... Quirky is a wonderful book and every person should learn the stories of these innovators that Melissa Schilling has grouped together in such an interesting way. I couldn't stop reading. These brilliant men and woman have done so much for this world, changed it in such a positive way, and everyone should take the time to read this book and learn their stories and hear the sacrifices they made. I loved how she dived into the lives of these brilliant people and spoke of their lives, their accomplishments, and their common traits. Simply a page-turner. Go to Amazon
Great book that every one should read it, especially parents You don't change the world by being part of the crowd. Motivation Five Stars Inaccurate title. Great book! A compounding book on the biographies of the brightest individuals! Great read. Book loses steam fast TITANS AMONG INNOVATORS Truly interesting to learn about the traits that great innovators had in common Inspirational Heroes’ Stories Retold

Michael Jackson’s first book saw the light in United States at the end of February 1988 with a display worthy for the star he was. In the book, Michael discusses his personal and professional life and the publisher Doubleday described it as “candid”. With “Moonwalk” MJ traces an autobiography where he talks about his friends, his surgeries and his compelling rise to the category of a star. The book was another success for Jacqueline Onassis.
Book picture
As an editor at Doubleday Books the former first lady presented Michael Jackson book as an idea that would be worth pursuing. The marketing department people were out of a different background and they had no idea about MJ but she got the approval. Rumours tells that her kids Caroline and John, Jr. suggested her to approach MJ. So she orchestrated the deal. Michael Jackson book would have been a bestseller.
Closing The Contract With Michael Jackson
She reached Michael’s to talk about the possibility of writing a book. Despite the reservation in which wrapped up his private life, he could not say no to the former first lady and actually Michael signed with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1984, before the “Victory” tour. Jackie achieved a coveted book contract with MJ.
Robert Hilburn helped Michael in the beginning. But it seem there were a difference of intent between MJ and Mrs. Onassis: he wanted to put together a picture book, while Onassis wanted a full-scale biography. After a clarification between the two, attorney John Branca ended Hilburn involvement in the book.
“She was the only person in America who could get him on the phone,” said Stephen Davis, one of the ghost-writers of “Moon Walk,” in an interview with Reuters. Michael considered the former First Lady a great woman and was deeply flattered when she approached him.
Writing The Book
The agony that accompanied its publication was great. Michael had agreed to write it with the help of a ghostwriter at the behest of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and editor Shaye Arehert spent several weeks in his house of Los Angeles and followed him on his tour in Australia, but writing the book went on for, like, four years. “While he loved books and carried them with him wherever he went, creating one was just not as exciting as finding the right note or step or guitarist,” explained Areheart. “So the writing of this book took a long time.”
Then came the anguish of shaping his story. Before this, he had never stopped to consider what it meant to narrate the critical events of his life. He struggled with the process and procrastinated for years. When he agreed to be interviewed, Michael dwelled on his childhood and the cruelty of his father. In fact, after Michael himself, his father Joseph emerges as the book’s most memorable character. After Michael rejected the work of the first ghost-writer, began consulting directly with Areheart. Eventually a second writer, Stephen Davis, was employed, although his name did not appear on the book’s cover.
After finally approving the contents and allowing the book to go to press, Michael had a crisis of conscience; worried that the memoir would alienate his family, he was especially concerned about his descriptions of the beatings he suffered at Joseph’s hand. Michael feared that had been too candid. Then at the last minute he threatened to pull the plug on the book unless Jackie would have wrote the introduction. She complied though she complained about it for months–“I don’t know what to write.” Finally she wrote a two-paragraph introduction, which began with the line, “What can we say about Michael Jackson?”
The amount received by MJ was kept secret but according to a People Magazine article of that time, Onassis paid Jackson a $300,000 advance for the book. The ghostwriter Davis received what “a generous flat fee.”
The operation had been managed in complete secrecy, to where only a small number of top executives of the publisher knew the project, the manuscript was kept in a cash box and its different chapters were sent to the pre-printed by special couriers. MJ even had put a name in code to the autobiographer: Neil Armstrong, who was the first man to take a lunar walk. For once, the measures have worked, and the book reached the bookstores in plain surprise. It was printed on a paper heavier and more expensive than usual, carrying on each page a small drawing of the feet of Michael Jackson when he makes his famous moonwalk.
The Book Launch
As Doubleday was aware that Michael Jackson fans were not regular bookstores clients a formidable publicity launch was arranged, saturating above all the radio waves, with spots, promotions and broadcasting, with a bell in seven stations in the twenty-seven most important cities of the country, as well as advertising on television and videos, and even in bookstores, with some figures of the singer in natural size able to hold in both hands nineteen books.
The promotions involved trivias or song contests, for which winners received copies of ”Moonwalk”. Those stations featured rock music and rhythm-and-blues. Somewhat similar promotions also runned on the top 19 national video shows, including the Turner Broadcasting System, Nickelodeon and VH-1. Both the radio and video promotions were arranged by Epic Records, Michael Jackson’s recording label.
At the beginning, three hundred thousand copies had been printed soon reaching 500,000 after having topped the New York Times Best Sellers and quickly sold out the initial print. That was an extremely successful book.
The obvious next step was to print more copies and then prepare a paperback version. But MJ, “who had total control of the project, vetoed both plans”. “There was so much bad feeling when it didn’t go back to press,” Davis said. Relations between the two cultural icons were already strained because Michael had threatened to block the book’s publication unless Onassis wrote a foreword. Onassis, who as MJ, used to guard her privacy and did not want her name in any book she edited, reluctantly made an exception.
Michael planned to have his autobiography “Moonwalker” published in Europe to coincide his British tour dates. MJ added two further dates at Wembley on August 26 and 27 taking a total of seven nights in all — a record for the venue. Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended Michael’s July 16 concert at Wembley — benefit for Great Ormond Street Hospital The Prince’s Trust. The UK publishers was Heinemann.
Inside The Book
If “Moon walk” would have been written by any other Pop Star it would have probably been a dull affair—it’s really just a brief ramble by this bloke through what he’s done in the last 29 years and why he did it. “Moon walk”, however, is rarely dull for several reasons.
Firstly Michael Jackson was so famous and reclusive already at that time and it’s been years since anyone’s really known what he thought about anything, so even the little bit that “Moon Walk” gave away was fascinating.
Secondly Michael Jackson was not the slightest bit like any other pop star, or even like many other people—the picture he gave in “Moon Walk” is of someone obsessed with achieving certain things all his life to a degree most people could barely imagine.
At the beginning of the book, after an intriguing self portrait with his head covered by a “Billie Jean “hat and signed “MJ 1998” and the dedication to dancer Fred Astaire,
he placed two quotes that sum a lot of what he tried to say in the rest of the book.
One by Beatles John Lennon in which he say he is just a channel for music and the only joy for him is when the music flows through him: “those moments are what I live for”.
The other—perhaps more revealing—is by Thomas Edison (inventor of the light bulb) who explains that to discover anything he would first study everything that has ever been done in the past to do with that thing, then says the three qualities you need to achieve anything worthwhile are “hard work”, “stick-to-it-
Other two themes also come up again and again:
The first one is the price he paid. If you’ve believed all those newspaper reports about how off his trolley he’s supposed to be you’ll be surprised at how clearly he seemed to realize the position he was in—all the way through he empathizes how important what he does and how much he loves it. From time to time there are sad little references to how he’d like to be as the other people, to how lonely he is and to how difficult it is for him to find love.  Occasionally you feel like giving him a kick and telling him not to be so wet and weedy but more often you feel like giving him a hug.
The other main theme is this amazing belief he could make people all around the world thrilled. Sometime you get the impression that deep down he thinks what had happened to him was in some ways terribly unfair—all he tried to do was to make people happy and harm no one, all he got in return was people calling him a freak or a loony. “I hope this book help clear up some misconceptions” say Michael Jackson at one point. Well, “Moon walk” was a superb start.
“I believe I’m one of the loneliest people in the world.” That’s just one of the many sad tales in the book that Michael Jackson wrote, and I pick out a few more “highlights” to explain why the book is such a “fascinating read”.
When Michael Jackson and his brothers used to rehearse in the family’s tiny house in Gary, Indiana, some other local “kids’ used to throw rocks at the windows as they played and teased them they never ever be successful. His first performance was in first grade where he stood up and sang–Climb Every Mountain – from The Sound Of Music. He remembers feeling a bit confused at how impressed everyone was after he’d done something that seemed so sample but also thrilled because he’d made some of his teachers so happy that they started blabbing.
The Jackson 5 would play in dodgy ‘strip’ dubs and -seedy’ clubs. As well as watching lots of women take their clothes off, in one club he and his brothers used to take turns peeking through a hole in the wall of their dressing room into the ladies’ toilet: “I saw stuff l have never forgotten” recalls Michael. On the same subject Michael adds, rather ominously. “I received quite an education as a child. More than most. Perhaps this freed me to concentrate on other aspects of my life as an adult..”
When the Jackson 5 were first starting off, no-one in the family was allowed to talk on the phone or more than five minutes in case anybody from a record company phoned up to offer them a record contract.
Once the Jackson 5 started to have hits like “I Want You Back” Michael would spend a lot of his time living with “veteran” songstress Diana Ross – she’d go shopping for pencils and paint with him. “She was my mother, my lover and my sister all combined in one amazing person” he coos. When she announced she was getting married Michael admit that he was a bit hurt and a little jealous …“it was hard for me because I had to walk around pretending to be overwhelmed that Diana was getting married to this man I’d never met …”
Before the Jackson 5 did interviews their record company Motown would sit in on the interviews, blocking any questions they thought were not suitable. Michael remembers that once they were bit narked at not being allowed to answer a question about Black Power (a big American black rights movement) so at the end they winked at the interviewer and quickly gave a black power clenched fist salute, the scamps…
Whenever they were on a tour, the Jackson 5 used to get up to pranks galore: they’d have fast walking races down hotel corridors, pillow fights, wrestling matches, shaving cream wars, would drop balloon and paper bags full or water off the balconies, order huge meals on room service for strangers and would booby trap their hotel room doors so that anyone walking in would get a bucket of water on their head. Phew, rock’n’roll eh.
Getting acne as a teenager was, claim Michael, one of the most ghastly things he’s ever had to live through… “a pimple for every oil gland”. As a result, he became subconsciously scarred: “My appearance began to depress me I couldn’t look it people when I talked to them”.
People did not worship Michael because his good at doing pop music. Michael could be shit at pop music and it wouldn’t matter. People worshipped and still adore Michael because he was very very good at being a star. He was doing it brilliantly until about 1987 and with up and down he’s still up there among the top six charismas.
Even though unremittingly cheapened by the tabloids Michael is still about as close as the pop carousel ever comes to mythology. But it is essential he remains fundamentally unattainable.
His autobiography should in theory expose how normal he was, how boring just like the rest of us, how he wiped his potty everyday and went down the shops and watches the TV and, er,” feeds the chimp”. There you are…He can’t do it. He might even be trying to do it but it’s not in his nature. He’s supernature. Michael Jackson was uncommon.
However once one gets over prose style, “Moon walk” is pretty absorbing.  The mildly-fashioned anecdotes concerning Jackie Wilson, Gamble and Huff, even ugly Quincy Jones, are entertaining. There are no great shakes but his memories of Billie Jean arriving by carrier pigeon from The Muse are sparkly enough and the tragic real-life heartbreak (Liza Minnelli, Liz Taylor, Brooke Shield, Diana Ross — “I’ve always loved her and & always will” are like cinnamon-flavoured news bulletins.
The pictures are great, and the print is so big is practically braille. He’s a perfectionist about his records and his movies and every little “oof” or “wap” is precious; tingly; understanding. The book is written like a deckchair with woodworm, but he does what his good at, fascinate people.
Is “Moonwalk” the true story of Michael Jackson?
No, it isn’t. “Moonwalk” is an autobiography with all the unpleasant memories taken out. It gives to the reader the impression that Michael Jackson has been selective in the way he viewed his own history. There are very good reasons for Michael’s reluctance to air any dirty linen.
He probably was conscious that his fans did love him more for his childlike Peter Pan personality. After all, his sexuality as performer, on entertainer, was and it is legendary. Why bother to spoil that?
In this book MJ was honest about his nose surgeries, his religious preferences and some various anecdotes but he remained an enigma. For a man with so much soul he had taken pains to conceal his own soul. The final impression is of a rather lonely fellow who is hell bent on perfecting career. He also show to be a genuinely nice and gentle man and maybe that’s more important than everything else.
Michael Jackson’s film “Moonwalker”
It was set for a 1988 spring release too. A full-length feature directed by Jerry Kramer with special effects by Colin Chilvers. It contains a series of set pieces put together and includes a section around the “Smooth Criminal” from the”BAD” album.
The film reputedly cost 22 million dollars. The film’s message is a slogan against drugs in general and against the exploitation of children-dealers in particular.

If you are looking for practical advice on building a talented team, implementing a strong business model and improving business performance in your organization, this is a great place to start. By building your business, you also build your personal wealth as the owner.
