On January 14th 1872 Edinburgh’s world famous dog, Greyfriars Bobby died.
For many visitors to Edinburgh, a must-see is the statue of Greyfriar's Bobby on George IV Bridge and, although it's officially frowned upon, rubbing Bobby's nose for luck. The true story of Greyfriar's Bobby is so enchanting that even Walt Disney decided to make a movie about him.
Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who became famous in the 19th century for his unwavering loyalty to his owner. In 1850 John Gray, his wife, Jess and their son John arrived in Edinburgh. John was a gardener but could not find employment in his new hometown, so he worked as a night watchman for the Edinburgh Police Force.
It was a lonely job, so to keep him company, he bought a wee Skye Terrier, who he called Bobby. Soon John and Bobby became inseparable through the long winter nights they maintained a watch over their charges.
Edinburgh's damp and murky weather eventually took its toll on John, who was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Despite treatment from the Police Surgeon, John died on 15th February 1858 and was buried in Greyfriar's Kirkyard.
Bobby, who had never been apart from John, refused to leave the cemetery and stayed by his owner's grave. Despite the efforts of the graveyard staff to evict Bobby, he always returned and eventually, they gave up and provided little Bobby with shelter beside John's Grave.
Word of Bobby's loyalty quickly spread, and he became a local sensation. It is said that crowds would gather outside the graveyard at one o'clock each day. When Edinburgh's famous one o'clock gun was fired, Bobby would leave the grave and join local joiner William Dow for a walk to a local coffee shop.
John and Bobby visited Traill’s Temperance Coffee House on their rounds, and Bobby was always given something to eat by the owner John Traill. This tradition continued after John's passing, thanks to the generosity of the owner.
A new by-law was passed by the Edinburgh Council in 1867, making it mandatory that all dogs had a licence and a collar. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Chalmers, undertook to pay for Bobby's licence, and he received a collar with the inscription "Greyfriar's Bobby from the Lord Provost 1867 Licensed".
If you visit the Museum of Edinburgh on the Royal Mile, you can see Bobby's collar and drinking bowl. as seen in the pics, that I took in 2016/.
Bobby stayed by John's grave for 14 years until he passed in 1872. He was buried in the same cemetery, just a few feet away from his beloved owner.
Greyfriars Bobby's story is one of the most enduring tales of loyalty and devotion. It serves as a reminder of the special bond between humans and animals.
In 1981 a new headstone at Bobby's Grave was unveiled by the Duke of Gloucester. The inscription reads, "Greyfriars Bobby – Died 14 January 1872 – Aged 16 years – Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all".
The legend of Bobby touched the heart of Baroness Angelia Georgina Burdett-Coutts. She was the daughter of the banker Thomas Coutts (of Coutts Bank fame) and inherited £1.8 million on her grandfather's death, making her one of the wealthiest women in England.
Burdett-Coutts spent most of her wealth on philanthropic causes. She co-founded the Urania Cottage for "fallen young women" with Charles Dickens and became a social housing pioneer.
The Baroness got permission from Edinburgh Council to erect a statue of Bobby at the junction of Candlemakers Row and George IV Bridge, just outside Greyfriars Kirkyard. The artist William Brodie was commissioned to create the statue in 1872.
Since its unveiling, the statue of Bobby has become an important Edinburgh landmark.

Music Monday 5 New Releases: This Week's Must-Listen Tracks
This week brings a fresh wave of music from both established and upcoming artists. We've got dance-worthy tracks, heart-wrenching ballads, and even a touch of Halloween spirit. Let's dive into what you should be listening to this week. LLOREN captures the raw, transformative energy of chasing dreams in the heart of LA with new single! Lloren has definitely set something of a scene here, and it's not one that requires visuals, just your ears. Last Star gradually builds itself up layer by layer before finally giving it the all. A great song, already looking forward to the video Listen - Last Star in LA https://open.spotify.com/track/6py2lyAW3CFq1CIbfY4tEX?si=26883202c5db453e Live out all that you are with Veronica D'Souza's interpretive dance video for "Peaches In My Halo" Whilst I wouldn't go as to say that it oozes originality what I will say is that it makes great reference to the Tarantino classic Kill Bill and works by Kate Bush. I will say that it's outside the box thinking which I enjoy Watch - Peaches In My Halo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6vnNDiS8yE Phil Mac serves up a menacing new Halloween hip-hop banger, 'Shiftin'! Certainly, something of an after dark feel to it and Phil just tells it like is and doesn't do the softly softly touch which I like. Now I don't mind strong language in music provided it's not for the sake of it but rather as an expressive release. Decent tune Listen - Shiftin https://open.spotify.com/track/3m34ZTeBAkUehlLB8F4Cqf?si=495e3e5c99654756 Beans on Toast - Releases New Single: "Why?" Beans on Toast basically asks the question which occasionally we ask ourselves if we've nothing else going on; why are we here, what was here before us and what life actually means (probably not 42 if you're a Hitchhiker fan). The following are some of the most important things to have experts handle when organizing a bathroom remodel:The restoration's capacity to greatly alter the area's visual attractiveness is dependent on how it is carried out Water Damage Ceiling Repairs This will also be accurate after the problems are fixed. Perhaps we can revisit this once the repair is finished. Due to its high traffic, many people consider the bathroom to be an extension of their bedroom. This theory is supported by the design of the restroom. These are only a handful of the several compelling arguments in favor of installing a bathroom in every home. Expert joiners in Edinburgh have seen it all when it comes to bathroom remodels. Regardless of the scope of the project, they consistently deliver top-notch results. After finishing what they had begun, they were sure they could handle anything. New layout design is just one of their several responsibilities. They have a lot of stuff, but this is the most obvious. If you're fortunate, they may even recommend brand-new, high-quality furnishings and appliances for your room. Rest assured, we will not rest until the bathroom meets all of your expectations, be they aesthetic or practical. In this way, we can achieve our main objective. Keep your mind on a single task at a time if you want to get anything done.
The scientific community is always looking for new solutions to mitigate the effects of extreme weather. Remember that our purpose is to assist you in recovering from any disaster, be it fire, mold, or water, when you select an insurance policy. At this very moment, our Edinburgh joiners are ready to assist you. It was incredibly foolish to make that choice after a natural disaster had already occurred. No matter what happens, you can count on our steadfast support. Quickly completing repairs while still following policy criteria is made possible through our wide network in the insurance business. Because of this, we guarantee a speedy response to your claims. Efficient and equitable claim compensation is our top priority as a firm. No matter how severe the damage is, our skilled artisans will restore your treasured possession. Most stories revolve around the protagonist's emotions right before a major event. Clients who are truly thankful have sent us numerous touching letters of appreciation over the years. actually im going to put this in a reblog as well for anyone interested! as i mentioned in the OP, Edinburgh tenement flats have very high ceilings & unusually tall door frames which means the internal doors are all taller than what's become the standard height.
if you want to replace tenement doors you have to pay for a custom made door - according to the joiner difference in price is something like £50-60 for a standard 'off the shelf' door vs several hundred pounds to get one custom made. i assume this is why ppl have historically opted to alter them rather than buy new ones.
his suggestion for the boiler cupboard was to put a standard door on there & then a little panel at the top to fill the gap which works for me!
met up w a joiner last night at my new place who turned out to be very chatty and (for obvious reasons) very knowledgeable about the various quirks tenement flats have.
anyway we're talking about how best to put a door on the boiler cupboard (doesn't have one currently) which in turn leads to talking about how tenement flat doors are taller than standard doors which in TURN somehow leads to him pointing out that the doors in the flat have at some point had a sheet of plywood or something added to cover up the original panelling. goes to the hall cupboard & correctly predicts that they won't have bothered to alter the inside of it and its like damn ur right!!
i'm just there like '...why would anyone do that' & he's like 'oh it was the seventies'

On 13th October 1862 tragedy struck when two trains collided at Winchburgh to the west of Edinburgh.
This is thought to have been the first head on collision between two trains in the country, it was certainly the first one with loss of life as 17 people died.
It caused horror and dismay at the time, but today has been almost forgotten. The crash occurred a mile and a half northwest of Winchburgh. The site of the accident was just west of Craigton House in a 30-feet-deep cutting.
Usually there would not have been a problem as there were two tracks there, but one was being repaired at the time. The cutting is on a curve, and by the time the two drivers saw each other, they were barely 300 yards apart.
The subsequent investigation of the wreckage showed that both drivers had reversed their engines and applied the brakes. The driver of the train from Glasgow, Archibald Neil, leapt from his engine and survived though badly injured. The other driver was killed.
The dead included James Hosie, manager of the Oakley Iron Works, who had just recently married. He was the founder of the Bathgate Foundry in 1857. Ironically, much of his foundry work was iron castings for railways; as he had lived, so he died by railways.
Dozens of the injured were taken by cart or train to Linlithgow, and accommodated in the Star and Garter and Red Lion inns. The Falkirk Herald reported that an injured woman gave birth prematurely in the Star and Garter, but the incident seems to have been a false alarm. Others were taken into private houses – four in the home of Alex Miller, a saddler, and another two in the home of Mr John Robertson. Twelve died in the crash, another four in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and a Mr Bolton died on arrival at Linlithgow Station.
The dead were listed as:
Robert Morton, engine-driver on the train from Edinburgh Andrew Cochrane, fireman on the train from Edinburgh John Cunningham, fireman on the train from Glasgow Mrs Honeyman, wife of the railway guard on the train from Glasgow E.S. Bolton, a Birmingham commercial traveller Mr Cowie, a railway clerk at Stirling James Hosie, manager of the Oakley Ironworks, Dunfermline Mrs Gill, a Yorkshire lady in her seventies Mr Hardy, an attendant at the Morningside Asylum Mr C.M. Haxton, a Kirkintilloch printer Alexander Hedderwick, a Falkirk solicitor William McFarlane, a Leith shoemaker Michael McQuade, a Dunblane railway porter Emily Smith, daughter of an Edinburgh joiner Elizabeth Stevenson, a servant girl Robert White, a Falkirk fish-dealer John Wightman, the Earl of Lauderdale’s estate manager.
The casualties were fewer than they might have been because both trains were going slowly – the east-bound train at 20mph and the west-bound train at a mere 8mph.
