Plant of the Day
Thursday 16 March 2023
A splash of candy floss pink flowers are produced by Rhododendron mucronulatum on the bare stems before the leaves appear in the early spring. This is a deciduous shrub which has a twiggy, branching habit.

One of my favorite places I visited while in Edinburgh was the Royal Botanic Garden. I walked the Spring Trail and was so delighted to see how much was already in bloom! I took an unbelievable amount of pictures and got to chat with one of the gardeners and learned so much. The amateur gardener in me was ecstatic to speak with someone so knowledgeable about plants, not just in the UK but worldwide.
I also got to see an amazing exhibit called the Shipping Roots which is about the impact of non native flora and the British Empire. The exhibit is described as “specifically linking Australia and India and the often disastrous impact of removing flora from their natural habitat”. I took as many pictures as I was allowed to within the exhibit, which was absolutely emotional and impactful to see. You can read about the exhibit here: https://www.rbge.org.uk/whats-on/shipping-roots/52520
What was interesting to me is that I have eucalpytus and prickly pear ( a native species though!) growing in my garden and I never gave much thought as to how these plants could wreak havoc if they’re planted in lands where they were never meant to be. It was a really moving exhibit and a highlight of my trip to the botanic garden.

The Royal Botanical Garden: Walking through nature.
The trip to The Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh, was a rather…uneventful one. Mostly because of the winter.  But that didn’t mean we couldn’t appreciate the surrounding beauty! It was a peaceful morning, and Edinburgh’s skyline greeted us from behind the wintery shrubs in the garden.  But these blogs can’t be complete without history sprinkled in. The Royal Botanical Garden was founded by…

Plant of the Day
Sunday 26 March 2023
At the summit of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, rock garden is an amazing specimen of Ulmus glabra 'Nana' (dwarf wych elm). This is a very slow growing deciduous shrub that with time will form a small tree. The origin of this cultivar is unknown but it was listed in the Simon-Louis 1869 catalogue in France as Ulmus montana nana.
