"Eddie Redmayne's Kids Are Singing Cabaret's Songs Despite Their 'Horrendously Inappropriate' Lyrics (Exclusive)"
"My wife, Hannah, is like, 'Really?' " the Broadway star jokes to PEOPLE.
By Dave Quinn, May 13, 2024.
Eddie Redmayne is raising Broadway babies, but they might not be quite sure what they're singing just yet.
The Oscar-winning actor opened up about the interests of son Luke, 6, and daughter Iris, 8, while speaking at the 2024 Tony Awards Meet the Nominees junket earlier this month.
"My children love the theater," says Redmayne, 42, who is up for his second Tony Award for his leading actor portrayal of the Emcee in the acclaimed revival of the John Kander and Fred Ebb's Cabaret, "And they love the music to Cabaret, because the songs are so memorable and playful, they sort of sit in your head so quickly."
Luckily, the two don't appear to understand Cabaret's lyrics.
"Sometimes the lyrics are kind of more questionable," Redmayne says. "I was saying the other day that my daughter is sort of going around singing that song, 'Don't Tell Mama.' And all the lyrics are kind of horrendously inappropriate"
Redmayne shares Luke and Iris with wife Hannah Bagshawe, 41, whom he married in 2014. And as he jokes, she's not happy with their song choice.
"My wife, Hannah, is like, really? 'Don't Tell Mama' is one of the key songs? Come on. How about 'Don't Tell Papa?' " he says.
Despite the gaff, Redmaye is still hoping to sneak his son and daughter into the August Wilson Theatre in New York City to see his opening number.
"They haven't been to see the show, but I'm thinking of trying to sneak them into watch 'Willkommen,' " he says. "Because they've been such a part of this journey for me, my kids, so yeah."
The actor first played the role in the 2021 West End revival, which transferred this season to Broadway in a production that opened April 21. Directed by Rebecca Frecknall, it's officially called Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
Gayle Rankin, Steven Skybell and Bebe Neuwirth star alongside Redmayne in the production. All four received Tony Award nominations for their performances, while the show itself is up for five other awards including best revival of a musical.
This is Redmayne's second time on Broadway, and second Tony Award acting nomination. He received the 2010 Tony Award for his role in Red.
"The Tonys, in many ways, changed my life when I was here with Red 14 years ago," Redmayne shares to PEOPLE. "So it feels completely wonderful to be back here. Cabaret has been a passion project for many years. The fact that we made it to Broadway was a huge thing, and to be recognized across the board by the Tonys means the world."
"And they're just magnificent, the actual Tony Awards," he adds. "It's kind of of unrivaled as far as being an entertaining evening. So it's thrilling to be a part of it".
The 2024 Tony Awards will take place on Sunday, June 16 at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater in New York City. Viewers can watch the show on CBS and Paramount+ beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Select awards will also be handed out on a preshow that will stream on Pluto TV.
Tickets for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club are now on sale.

Closed starter for @lives-by-moonlight
Ari was walking the hall of Hogwarts heading to the teacher's meeting a bit later. Which was unlike him. He was not truly paying attention to where he was going and bumped into someone dropping all his folders contents spilling everywhere. " I'm so so sorry!" He replied bowing politely before bending down to start picking them up.
Once he got everything back in his folders. He stood back up. " My apologies once again!"

Actress nomination: Margo Robbie, Ana De Armes, viola Davis, Carey Mulligan. Potentially adding in Letitia Wright and Florence Pugh for the wonder (think Netflix will push Ana tjo)
Actor: Brad Pitt (only if he keeps a low profile), Eddie Redmaye, Christian Bale, Austin Bulter (won’t be shocked if he was snubbed) think R-Patz will be snubbed
No Timmy and Huge Jackedman? I feel scandal or none, Brad often gives a passable rather than award winning performance.
Also you don’t think Michelle Yeoh will get a nom? I mean, I do expect a snub.

‘Fantastic’ return to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is the first of a proposed new series of five films in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world that gave us seven “Harry Potter” novels and eight films. Cynics will be quick to dismiss this expansion of the franchise as a shameless cash grab, but Rowling and Warner Bros. deserve credit for not taking the easy way out.
Set 70 years before the events in the “Harry Potter” series, “Fantastic Beasts” has no returning characters — Dumbledore who is reportedly set to make an appearance in the second film is mention — and the setting has been shifted from England and the beloved Hogwarts School of Wizardry to New York City.
This is a bold move. A more obvious and less imaginative path to building this cinematic world wouldve been to make prequels centered around smaller supporting characters or, like the new play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” to focus on the children of the young protagonists of the “Potter” series.
The new lead is Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a wizard who is researching fantastic creatures for a book. He arrives in New York City with a case of such creatures. Inevitably, several of them get loose.
Scamander gets an unlikely sidekick in Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), a no-maj (a non-magical person or muggle if you prefer British slang) who wants to open a bakery. When Kowalski accidentally switches cases with Scamander, he suddenly finds himself immersed in a magically world that he admits can’t be a dream because “I ain’t got the brains to make this up.”
Also along for the ride are a pair of magical sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein (Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol), who work for the Magical Congress of the United States of America. This highly bureaucratic organization has strict guidelines about keeping the normal world and and wizarding world separate.
There’s also some more complex plot elements involving the Director of the Magical Security Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) investigation of a mysterious entity that is destroying the city. He is manipulating the abused son (Ezra Miller) of anti-witch leader (Samantha Morton) into revealing a girl who may have power over this destructive being.
The scenes between Miller and Farrell have a real sense of tragedy that plays nicely against the lighter elements of the rest of the film. Miller factors heavily in the final conflict and helps to give the climax an emotional impact.
While these darker elements of the film are well-handled with Farrell giving an ambiguously sinister and menacing performance, the film is at its strongest when it focuses on Scamander, Kowalski and the Goldstein sisters. Their scenes together have a more playful and fun tone.
Kowalski is the film’s best character. Fogler is genuinely funny in the role and not merely in a comic relief sense. He develops a sweet and amusing romance with the thickly New York-accented Queenie. There’s a delightful scene in which the sister prepare and serve dinner to Scamander and Kowalski using magic. Unlike the other characters, Kowalski’s experiencing the world magic for the first time, and Fogler’s sense of awe is 100 percent believable.
While Fogler is a scene stealer, Redmayne makes Scamander a lovably shy and socially awkward character. Scamander struggles to look people directly in the eye when he speaks to them, but Redmayne makes this quality endearing rather than off-putting. Redmayne infuses Scamander with a passion and empathy for his fantastic beasts that is hard not to get behind.
This is director David Yates’ fifth film in this world. He directed the four darkest films in the “Harry Potter” series and while he proved to be adept at injecting lighter moments alongside somber and tense ones, the content didn’t allow him to portray much of the sense of wonder that existed in the previous film. Here, Yates gets to finally explore some truly wondrous and magical imaginary, particularly when taking trips into Scamander’s bag, which has a whole world inside it, including different enviros for each of the creatures.
Rowling has thought up some delight and marvelous creatures. The best of the bunch is Nifler, a mischievous creature who loves shiny things, which he steals and hides in his bottomless fur coat.
There’s also fun and and thrilling sequence involving a rhinoceros-like beast and a flying creature that expands or contrasts to fill whatever space it is in. The designs of all the creatures are imaginative and rendered beautifully.
By the end, elements have been set up for subsequent films. There will be a new battle against a dark wizard in the coming films, but, as with the previous series, what will bring us back is the characters. Rowling has once again created a vivid world and populated it with characters we can’t wait to spend more time with.

Exclusive Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them images
“There are magical creatures everywhere,” says Fantastic Beasts director David Yates. And, if you pick up the brand new issue of Empire this Thursday, you might just discover where to find them…
The prospect of expanding J.K. Rowling’s Potter universe (especially when the source material is a 128-page book released for Comic Relief) would keep your average Muggle awake at night. But Yates had other feelings going into the project. “It was a completely blank canvas," he tells Empire. "But rather than being daunting to me, it was a wonderful opportunity to define the tone. While part of the same universe as Potter, it’s a much more grown-up world,” he explains. “And this time the hero is not a schoolboy, but an adult.”
Yes, said hero, Newt Scamander – played by Eddie Redmayne – is very much an adult. An adult who has previous form with the franchise-at-large, as it turns out. “I actually auditioned to play [Chamber Of Secrets villain] Tom Riddle when I was back at university," Redmayne tells Empire. "I properly failed and didn’t get a call back. Over the years I always hoped I might be cast as a member of the Weasley family, but unfortunately not.” Fate, it seems, had another role in mind for the Oscar winner.
Newt is joined by a whole batch of new characters, including Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), the first main Muggle character. “Actually, I’m a ‘No-Maj’ – short for ‘no-magic’,” Fogler explains. “‘Muggles’ is a British term. I’m like Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the regular, happy-go-lucky guy that gets to play with the fairies in the forest.”
Someone who definitely isn’t ‘happy-go-lucky’ is Ezra Miller’s Credence. The adopted son of Samantha Morton’s witch-hating Mary Lou Barebone, Miller is tight-lipped about his character (“everything I say will be evasive bullshit. I literally can’t answer any of your questions”). Could Credence be the new uber-villain David Yates teases to Empire? “There is a character who we meet in this movie, but who will come to the fore much more in the second [film],” Yates tells Empire. “One of the scariest aspects he has is this amazing ability to seduce with his ideas.” Sounds like this unnamed menace and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named would get on swimmingly.
The director also hinted at the timely relevance of the film’s story, describing the 1920s setting as “a weird parallel to where we’re at now. Just this fizzy champagne bottle of a world with all this excess, but teetering on the edge of some great collapse, economically and ideologically. And waiting in the wings are malicious forces hoping to come in and capitalise on that.”
For much, much more on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, pick up a copy of our brand new issue, available in all good and evil newsagents on Thursday 28 October.
Fantastic Beasts wings its way into cinemas on 18 November.
