The Chemical Brothers: "No Reason" (2023)
It's all about the race to catch up on all the unlistened purchases and finds over the last few years. But, when one of your favorite mutuals sends you something, you better stop everything and listen. It took her sending me the Chemical-'s new single to get me back into them. Damn, do I remember those rolling drums that signified them and their early works, which made me a die-hard fan when they started. Those rolling drums gave Tom Rowlands & Ed Simons the idea to present a choreographed marching band for their video, and that bleeds heavy with some trippy saturated neon colors which has to be seen. Pieced together with acidic tweaks, groovy bass lines, and snappy rhythms that had to be no less than danceable all equal another signature Chemical Brothers track that still has many of their original fans stay in touch with what made the duo great since day one.

Moby's noughts ended well. However, what happened to those similar to him? Mind you, I'm not discussing his electronica peers, I'm talking about those who were popular during the late 90's. Still, we should probably check some of his electronic music compatriots, so let us go to The Chemical Brothers. Their We Are The Night ended their noughts, which could be seen as a paradox for them, i.e they were never more successful than they were during then, though their critical standing showed them getting drubbed at the time. Nonetheless, the LP pointed towards their better future, where they transformed into the best possible elder statesmen of their scene. Thus, the record is a mixed melange of them at their worst and at their best.

Obsessed with the Young Royals finale.
Obsessed with Simon, Sara, Wilhelm and Felice driving away from a shutdown Hillerska, free from a system which was never going to accept them, happy and together.
Obsessed with how there’s still a chance Hillerska could reopen because that system is next to impossible to take down and the upper-class rarely face real consequences for their actions.
Obsessed with August’s face when he saw Wilhelm walking away, realising that he was trapped. Wilhelm said August was the heir they needed but he couldn’t have been more wrong - that man has bucket loads of trauma, an eating disorder he isn’t even close to ready to confront and no support system around him, he’s not gonna do much better with the role of Crown Prince than Wilhelm did.
Obsessed with Nils coming out to his friends and them easily accepting him, because their issue with Simon really was the fact that he was poor and a socialist, and Nils both still believes in the system he’s in and his queerness doesn’t destabilise the system the same way Wilhelm’s does.
Obsessed with Stella ending up with Fredrika, because although Rosh might have been fun to hang out with for a night Stella also still believes in and upholds the system she belongs to and Rosh was never going to fit in that system or uphold the traditional feminine values needed to survive in it.
Obsessed with how the monarchy is portrayed as unchangeable and impossible to modernise because it’s built on such outdated ideals.
Obsessed with the mix of both happy and open-ended endings.
I just adore it so much

Some electronic musicians during the noughts carried on as if nothing changed. To give you an example – The Chemical Brothers continued with their triumphs of the late 90's during most of the noughts, but you could tell they set themselves up for a crisis. Come To Us, for instance, is an example of a record that has a lot of the same quirks as the predecessor, Surrender, yet they don't function the same way. No, they seem less organic and they are more like this-worked-before-how-to-make-this-work-again. I agree, one could assume I begrudge them of their success, which is not the case. What I claim is they failed to innovate on these quirks, they just replicated them. They didn't upgrade them like in the past, they merely polished them this time.
