Another sketch from the Nightstand Archives: In This Scene Edward King, called "Eddy" by his family or "Ed" by friends, is a retired professional boxer. Edward "King of the Ring" was the two-time world heavyweight champion, but he retired after 12 years--at the peak of his boxing prowess--to prioritize his family. He never got rich off of boxing, but he did have enough of a reputation to buy his old boxing gym and get certified as the new coach when his old trainer retired. But his pride and joy was his family--his loyal wife Caitlyn "Cat" Stone-King, his son Leonidas "Leo" King, and his daughter Madeline "Maddy" King, and he never once regretted his choice to choose a more quiet career closer to home. He was especially close with his son, Leo, coaching him in youth boxing until Leo was champion of the youth regional league.
However, the King family was not necessarily financially comfortable. Ed never got rich off of boxing (his money went into his house and buying the gym), he struggled to pay the bills each month, and his business was barely able to keep itself afloat, but there was always just enough, and he even managed to save up for his children's college education. But just as Leo was about to graduate high school and get his first professional boxing contract, Ed's daughter Maddy got pregnant. There was no question about keeping the baby, but the extra costs of a new cub in the family was enough to make Ed seriously worry about his family's financial future. It was only Leo's decision to reject a career in professional boxing, start working, and do college part-time that kept both the family's finances and the boxing gym afloat for almost 6 years (Ed and Cat worked more than full-time at the boxing gym and could find extra jobs), until Leo was hired by his dad and got the idea to expand into MMA. His bold idea paid off, and now Ed's Fighting Gym is beginning to take in more and more revenue, slowly but surely. Here, Ed is taking a breather after a workout of his own. He now specializes as a striking coach and serves as his son Leo's primary coach as they prepare for Leo's MMA debut.
