This film essay explores the history of mercury contamination, as a mediated phenomena and a biproduct of media production. Using the concept of ‘destructive space-time’ we attempt to portray the non-linear temporal relations of mercury poisoning and media objects. From the shift of tectonic plates to silicon valley, from the unperceivable totality of the worlds oceans to an informal excavation in Kenya, from a Neolithic cave wall to a back alley in New Dehli. The role of mercury in media and it’s mediated potential for contamination is diffuse in a tangled web of causations and familiarity. This film finds itself in the continuum between art film and essay film. Essayistic in the methodology of its research and conception. While the attempt at removing editorial intentionality via the multi-screen format and adoption of the cut-up method tends the film towards a more artistic modality at the cost of achieving a 'contaminatory' viewer experience. The lines of flight and the looping footage opens perspectives of a cross temporal network of contamination feeding in and out of media as it enables mediation and is mediated.

CFP: A Clockwork Green: Ecomedia in the Anthropocene
A Nearly Carbon Neutral Virtual Symposium Sponsored by the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment and the University of California, Santa Barbara June 14-30, 2018 A troubling paradox lies at the heart of ecomedia studies: those of us who study and teach about the intersection of ecological issues and non-print media also recognize that the production, consumption, and circulation…

“A Fable for Today…”
By Vidya Sarveswaran
Way to Piplantri: the road not taken…
We are just beginning to hear the murmurs of a nervous street. The sky above is like handmade parchment. Powder blue with swirls of crimped clouds. The air is heavy with the cloying smell of equally heavy flowers that attract snakes. But they do not worry about snakes here. This is the land of the brave desert warriors. Rajasthan, a state in the northwest of India and the only desert state in the country.
Cow lounging in the marble dust!
Our dusty SUV swerves around to avoid a cow, who looks rather annoyed that we are in her way. We wait for our escort, Champalal: he arrives on his noisy Royal Enfield Bullet motorbike wearing a blood-red turban and an obsequious smile. As we drive through several alleys of this town called Piplantri in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, we cannot help but notice the squeaky clean roads, the vibrant signposts and wall graffiti drawn by the children of the village. The houses that pass us are all splendidly bright and wear a medieval look. And suddenly, the motorbike is lost in the raucous voices of villagers and vendors who have all come out to meet us.
We tell them about our pilot shoot that seeks to curate their unique village and the ways in which the villagers have chosen to address two global issues: the environmental crisis and the role played by rural women (a particularly vulnerable group) in “green” community engagement. As we wait for the headman, Mr. Shyam Singh Paliwal, on the terracotta steps, we cannot help but scan the vista before us. The villagers tell us that the last sparrows from the mountains have left because of the marble dust from the mountains across, and the rhythmic explosions from the marble mining industries that rock the very foundations of this little village. Paliwal, dressed in stark white, tells us about the personal loss of his teenage daughter to an illness—and our own vulnerability as individuals on a fragile planet.

Coming from a part of the world where the girl child is still viewed as a societal stigma, Paliwal’s loss led him to rewrite the story for this village. People in the village plant 111 (an auspicious number according to the villagers) trees every time a girl is born, and the community ensures that the trees attain fruition as the girls grow up. The village has planted a quarter million trees over the last six years! For several years now, Peeplantri village has been protecting the welfare of the girl child and has also contributed significantly to the biodiversity of the region—and vows to bring back sparrows into the bald mountains across.
As we break for lunch, which Paliwal himself cooks for us over the fire wood stove, we are delighted to learn that the menu includes corn bread with Aloe vera curry, and organic lemon grass chai all grown from the mountains around us (and also for sale in the co-op that is run by the women of the village).
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The food and warmth are as refreshing as their story. We realize that the charpoy that we sit on has suddenly become a confluence of voices—we, the local and the global, all merge into a state of unified consciousness that will no longer hide behind the marble dust of the mountains across.
As we say our goodbyes, the silent ceiling lights up with gentle laughter. Like a flock of brown sparrows above the roof where we are sitting…in the middle of a green oasis in the desert.
Our team with Shyam Singh Paliwal and his team.
I wish to thank the RCC Society of Fellows for the Public Outreach Grant, which helped make this pilot shoot possible. The documentary is currently in production.

Anyone in academia knows that a significant component in the academic world is conference travel. With a single roundtrip transcontinental flight releasing +one metric ton of CO2 per coach passenger, this is problematic for those trying to reconcile their academic requirements with their desire to be responsible citizens of earth.
With this problem in mind, UC Santa Barbara has been experimenting with the idea of a “nearly carbon-neutral conference”. These conferences contain all of the same components as an in-person conference, including panels, key notes, and even activities. The one crucial difference is that everything takes place virtually, so the need to travel is negated.
This year, The Association for the Study of Literature and Environment is hosting a nearly carbon-neutral symposium on the topic of “Ecomedia in the Anthropocene.” Learn more about this fascinating new form of academic gathering.

By Sabine Himmelsbach, director of HeK – House of Electronic Arts Basel and publisher of "Entangled Realities. Living with Artificial Intelligence", Basel, Christoph Merian Verlag, 2019 Screens are all around us. The mobile phone almost feels like an extension of the body, we view and respond to messages continuously, post images and videos, always online, always connected. The presentation will reflect life in the digital condition and the complex relationship between humans and screens by presenting examples from the curatorial practice at HeK, House of Electronic Arts Basel – from screen based works to augmented and virtual reality, where the framed world of the screen is dissolving into an immersive experience. Since March 2012, Sabine HIMMELSBACH is the new director of HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel). After studying art history in Munich she worked for galleries in Munich and Vienna from 1993–1996 and later became project manager for exhibitions and conferences for the Steirischer Herbst Festival in Graz, Austria. In 1999 she became exhibition director at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. From 2005–2011 she was the artistic director of the Edith-Russ-House for Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany. Her exhibition projects include Fast Forward (2003), Coolhunters (2004), Ecomedia (2007), MyWar (2010) and Culture(s) of Copy (2011).

Today, my usual co-conspirator (Bridgitte Barclay of Aurora University) and I got our acceptance for ASLE, the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment. The conference will be held in Detroit this June and centers on the theme of Rust/Resistance. I am so excited to be going again! ASLE is my scholarly home, where I find the most interesting connections, meet the coolest people, and come away the most excited about new possibilities for scholarship and teaching.
Our roundtable is called “Resistant Discourses and Strategies of Recovery: Exploring Gender and Environment in Science Fiction.” Aside from Bridgitte and myself, it will feature Carter Soles (The College at Brockport, SUNY), Michelle Yates (Columbia College), Stina Attebery (University of California, Riverside), and Tyler Harper (New York University). It will include papers on sf texts ranging from the 1950s to the last year or two, including 1950s creature features (like The Wasp Woman), Soylent Green, WALL-E, the Mad Max franchise, Upstream Color, WALL-E, Her, Ex Machina, and – our lone novel – Kim Stanley Robinson’s 2312.
Our paper titles given an even better sense of the roundtable’s specific topics and theoretical concerns:
“Remixing Reproduction: Queer Intimacy and the Ecology of Sound in Upstream Color” – Stina Attebery
“Saving Eden: Masculinity, Civilization, and Environmental Nostalgia in Soylent Green and WALL-E” – Michelle Yates
“Mad Max: Beyond Petroleum?” – Carter Soles
“‘Either you’re mine or you’re not mine’: Controlling Gender, Nature, and Technology in Her and Ex Machina” – me (Christy Tidwell)
“(En)gendering Nature in Kim Stanley Robinson’s 2312” – Tyler Harper
“Camp Resistance: Animal Avatars and Gender Exaggeration in 1950s Creature Features” – Bridgitte Barclay
I’m a particular fan of Carter’s paper title. I agonized over my own, on the other hand, and still don’t love it. Someday I’ll develop a knack for title-writing, I hope.
This should be a fun and productive conversation about gender, environment, and resistance across a range of sf texts. Any readers who may be at ASLE this year should come see us!

TuTchTMAS AFTERGLOW - BAKARY DIALLO Since everyone’s lives and social media timelines are mad busy during the holidays I began the habit of waiting until after Christmas to post my holiday creations/finds. I call it the season of TuTchTmas, the afterglow of Christmas & the celebration of the changing year. . This is more of a pre-glow than an afterglow since Mr. Diallo is just on the cusp of his forthcoming blaze. I’ve been following this Harlem/Paris/Mali-rooted brother closely for a little over a year now. He first came to my attention thru TuTchTFav photog Jan C. (@bananeck) and Mother Agent/Model Scout extraordinaire Terence at @Bembelepictures. I research led not only to glowing remarks about Bakary’s work ethic & drive but a Wells Fargo/ CBS Ecomedia ad (mini bio) that showed me his incredible potential as an actor. Soon I learned that ".../actor" wasn't just the ubiquitous model tack-on but a serious and primary focus of study in his educational journey. Cameras, especially of the motion-picture variety, LOVE this kid. He’s blessed with a unique magnetic voice/accent/flow & what I call a Truth-transparent face —- which displays his true emotions (or expertly-acted emotions) to the highest degree. His sometimes difficult journey has honed an old-soul vibe, a perfect compliment his wide-smiling youthful exuberance. Bakary's soul glows like embers. With just the tiniest amount of fuel, his life purpose will spark into warming, light-giving flame. Watch. . This is my first Bakery Diallo TuTchTjoint but I predict you’ll see much more of him on my page (and the screens & stages of the planet.) This was designed from a shot by photog Javi Murillo for Parisian Fashion and Design Gallery The Woods. (and of course, S/O to Terence for his priceless eye and ongoing development efforts.) . @prince_kary @bembelepictures @javi_studio @thewoodsgallery #TuTchT #TuTchTIMAGING #ThruTuTchTEyes #BakaryDiallo #MerryTuTchTmas #TuTchTmasAfterglow #OnestoWatch #BembelePictures #JanCPhotography #JaviMurilloPhotography #thewoodsgallery #MaleModelsofColor #TuTchTFav #ModelPortraits #ActorPortraits #MalianModels #Bamako #YoungBlackHollywood #BakaryDialloTuTchT #H https://www.instagram.com/p/B6t85mzlIOP/?igshid=7dy6mq3dzcjj

Pitching the Anthropocene: On Global Media Work and the World to Come
Pitching the Anthropocene: On Global Media Work and the World to Come
By: Dominic Hinde
From around the age of 15, I think I had wanted to be a journalist, and in the pre-Amazon time before print publishing’s great data-driven reckoning I would go to the branch of the British book chain Waterstones in my local town and buy autobiographies and memoirs by foreign and war correspondents. Foreign correspondents seemed to have the dream job. You got to travel, you…
