Genuine question, because I'm struggling to find answers online: Are safaris in African countries good organisations to support, or exploitative? I'm thinking of going to Kenya, and if safaris are like sanctuaries, I would love to do one. But if they're exploitative I'll steer clear. I can't find definitive answers online - PETA have a list of vegan safaris, but not much information on what makes them vegan, other than the meals served. My main concern is the experience itself. So many 'animal experiences' are humane-washed, and the wording on safari websites looks suspiciously similar to the wording on sites for zoos and aquariums. Obviously, it's different because the animals aren't in captivity, but do safari experiences disturb and exploit the animals, or are they worthwhile protection initiatives like they claim to be? Many thanks!

There is no sort of blanket answer I can give you except to say that safaris are not inherently against vegan ethics, it just depends on the organisation conducting them. That said, there are arguments on both sides.

On the one hand, we’d like to be able to say that if we want to do the best thing for animals, that usually means leaving them alone as much as possible. Intruding in wild spaces (especially in loud vehicles) does disturb them, creates noise and light pollution, and tourists don’t always act in the best interests of animals in terms of feeding them, littering, flash photography, shouting etc.

Realistically though, eco-tourism creates a significant incentive for local people to protect wild spaces and wild animals. Local communities can derive an income from conserving species, rather than hunting them, and are more likely to tolerate animals existing near human spaces because they know that their livelihood depends on those animals. It provides many eco-friendly jobs, as welll as funding and incentivising anti-poaching initiatives. It also gives poachers themselves a much safer, alternative means of making a living.

As unhelpful as this may be, this comes down to your own personal ethics. I can see good justifications for both deciding not to take part in a safari because you don’t want to disturb animals, and deciding to support eco-tourism and put money into local economies by going on a safari. If you are opting for the latter, just do your research to find out their policies on wildlife interaction, how close they allow tourists to get, and crucially, if they also offer any hunting activities, as that unfortunately is not uncommon.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will undertake a State Visit to Kenya

The visit will take place from Tuesday 31st October to Friday 3rd November 2023, and will celebrate the warm relationship between the two countries and the strong and dynamic partnership they continue to forge.

The visit is at the invitation of President Ruto and comes as Kenya prepares to celebrate 60 years of independence. His Majesty’s first visit to a Commonwealth nation as King is therefore to the country in which Queen Elizabeth II’s reign began, having acceded to the throne in Kenya in February 1952.

The King and Queen will visit Nairobi City County, Mombasa County and surrounding areas. Their Majesties’ programme will reflect the ways in which Kenya and the United Kingdom are working together, notably to boost mutual prosperity, tackle climate change, promote youth opportunity and employment, advance sustainable development and create a more stable and secure region.

During the visit, Their Majesties will meet President Ruto and the First Lady as well as and other members of the Kenyan Government, UN staff, CEOs, faith leaders, young people, future leaders and Kenyan Marines training with UK Royal Marines. The King will also attend an event to celebrate the life and work of the Nobel Laureate the late Professor Wangari Maathai, together with Wangari’s daughter, Wanjira Mathai.

The King and Queen’s programme will celebrate the close links between the British and Kenyan people in areas such as the creative arts, technology, enterprise, education and innovation. The visit will also acknowledge the more painful aspects of the UK and Kenya’s shared history, including the Emergency (1952-1960). His Majesty will take time during the visit to deepen his understanding of the wrongs suffered in this period by the people of Kenya. Together, Their Majesties will tour a new museum dedicated to Kenya’s history and will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Uhuru Gardens, as well as visiting the site of the declaration of Kenya’s independence in 1963.

Their Majesties will be greeted in Nairobi with a ceremonial welcome at State House and will each attend bilateral meetings – The King with The President and The Queen with the First Lady, before The President hosts a State Banquet at State House.

The King and Queen will visit Nairobi National Park to witness the vital conservation work being undertaken by the Kenya Wildlife Service, which is integral to Kenya’s thriving tourism industry.

Her Majesty, Patron of the equine welfare charity Brooke, will hear how the charity is working with the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals to rescue donkeys at risk and promote their welfare.

The King, as Captain General of the Royal Marines, and The Queen, will visit Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa. There, Their Majesties will witness Kenyan Marines, trained by the Royal Marines, demonstrating a covert beach landing, showing defence collaboration in action.

The Queen will meet survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, learning how they are supported and sharing her own insights from working in this area.

Unit 5 Blog Post

Seeing that this week’s blog post is open-ended was both a delight and a challenge because, as a passionate ecology student, I can talk about nature-related concepts in my sleep. In fact, midterm studying has even caused me to start sleep-talking about the classifications of vertebrates, but that’s beside the point. A big part of my life that has shaped who I am today is the traveling I’ve been fortunate enough to do, as my family has always prioritized these types of experiences. In this post, I want to reflect on the relationship between tourism and conservation, and evaluate how I can more sustainably explore the world going forward. 

I believe that tourism and the appreciation of nature are closely linked, with one often enhancing the other. When done mindfully, tourism can foster a deep connection to the natural world, but it's crucial to balance exploration with conservation to ensure future generations can enjoy the same landscapes and wildlife. Beyond personal growth, such as building confidence and problem-solving skills, nature-based tourism provides valuable educational opportunities, offering firsthand insight into ecosystems, biodiversity, and the importance of preservation, often times teaching more than a textbook ever could. 

However, as tourism grows, so do the pressures on natural environments. Over-tourism, or the excessive number of visitors to a particular location, can lead to negative effects like soil erosion, habitat destruction, pollution, and disturbances to wildlife. Popular destinations such as coral reefs and national parks often suffer from overcrowding, putting immense pressure on their ecosystems. This can result in the degradation of the natural beauty that draws tourists in the first place. 

Since gaining more say in the trips we take as a family or with friends, I’ve become increasingly interested in eco-tourism. Eco-tourism is a more sustainable and responsible form of tourism, which seeks to counteract these issues by promoting minimal environmental impact and maximum conservation efforts. It emphasizes respecting local cultures, supporting conservation projects, and ensuring that tourism benefits local communities. This approach not only preserves the natural beauty of an area but also enhances the cultural and economic well-being of the people living there. 

When I started writing this post, I explained that the trips I took as a child to visit family in Florida and England were not sustainability-focused. However, upon reflection, I realize I learned a lot about nature and culture during those trips. Our family unintentionally became interpreters, using the experiences to teach me what they knew about the environment and the history tied to the land. For instance, I distinctly remember learning about sharks while searching for shark teeth on the beaches of Florida. While these trips were never labeled as ecotourism, I believe they upheld many of its values.

The three major trips that come to mind, where I consciously planned with sustainability and conservation in mind, are my safari in Kenya, sailing in the British Virgin Islands, and my exchange semester in Sweden. In Kenya, my grandmother and I stayed in different camps, and the Maasai guides—who have traditionally lived off the land—shared their knowledge of the animals and ecosystem. Conservation was central to the safari, with a focus on protecting wildlife and providing local people with opportunities to share their expertise. This trip was particularly special, as I learned so much about both the wildlife and the Maasai way of life.

The second trip was to the British Virgin Islands, where my family rented a sailboat to explore the islands. It was like a DIY cruise, but far more environmentally conscious, as cruises are notorious for harming the environment. Sailing allowed us to connect more closely with nature. Each morning, we would check the weather and wind to determine our route and explore the unique environment of the islands. One day, during a crossing, a pod of wild dolphins came beside our boat to play—a magical experience.

The biggest challenge I face is the environmental impact of transportation to these destinations. To combat this, I try to stay longer in each area and travel more slowly. This was the case when I did my exchange semester in Sweden last winter. Spending more time in a place helps me immerse myself in the local culture and fosters a more mindful and thoughtful approach to travel. This brings me to the last trip I want to mention: my grandmother’s visit to Sweden, where her one request was to see the northern lights. Although it wasn’t guaranteed, I wanted to make it happen for her. The only available tour was a snowmobile tour, so there I was, in northern Sweden, with my 80-year-old grandmother with a bad back on the back of my snowmobile. It turned out to be amazing. As we emerged from the woods, we were greeted by the most beautiful aurora borealis. The guides not only explained the scientific phenomena behind the lights but also shared what people from the past thought when they saw them thousands of years ago. We had this conversation while enjoying reindeer stew—an interesting experience for me as a usually-vegetarian.

Over the years, I’ve been working to make travel—a significant part of my life—more sustainable and less harmful. I’ve found that prioritizing low-impact activities like sailing, choosing local guides for tours, and traveling more slowly when possible helps me travel more responsibly.

First post this year, Sept 29, 2024

I have been in Kenya 16 days. Somehow it feels like an extension of last year, have I really  been away for nearly a year? Well,  yes,  and the old body feels the passage of time. For sure this is my last trip to Africa. I have be ben saying that for quite a few years, but the end is inevitable.

The  trip from Hawaii Island is always very long and tiring. This time extra so because of a 15 hour delay in Amsterdam due to a strike at the Jomo Kenyatta international Airport in Nairobi. People had risen up against the President Ruto’s decision to sell the airport to an Indian conglomerate or some such group. Foreign. Kenyans were incensed.

My friend and colleague, Marta Lepes, was traveling to volunteer with me at Pardamat conservancy of the greater Masai Mara through the auspices of the volunteer organization, African  Impact.  It was comforting to have a friend bear the difficulties of travel with me. 

There are other organizations that send volunteers throughout the world and to our spot in Kenya such as Go Eco and Conservation Africa, Africa edu., etc.

We had a few days to acclimate to the altitude, (a mile high) of Nairobi as the altitude will be the same where we will be for a month  for Marta and 6 weeks for me. We stayed at Maasai Lodge on the Southern end on the Nairobi National Park about an hour’s drive from the airport. It is a delightful place with individual bandas situated above a river and overlooking the Park where occasionally giraffe, rhino, etc., could be viewed. It is a very large facility built to accommodate conferences and other large groups but done in a way that felt cozy with small lounges scattered here and there and dining tables perched in alcoves overlooking the river. A large swimming pool resides at the bottom of the hill and waiters traipse up and down the steep incline serving those that enjoy the pool and beauty of the lower area. An adjacent field is dotted with baboon, and antelope and sometimes wart hogs and other creatures. Tree and rock Hyraxes peak out from their hiding places. 

We spent one day just chilling and the next two days going to see the Sheldrick Widlife trust orphanage and the Nairobi Game  park on Friday then Sat to see Rachel Kabue and her Nairobi Cat Sanctuary. We were amazed to hear there were now 600 cats at the sanctuary, yet the animals were well fed, happy playful and although sometimes a bit crotchety with each other, harmony reigned the majority of the time. 

She also had 6 dogs as they too needed  a home. all this and no odor, the place was spotless. The place being a small house not a  concrete and steel enclosure like one might have expected.

Sunday we were picked up by the Volunteer organization and transported the relatively short distance of a couple of hours drive to Limuru  to the Brackenhurst Conference Center. A huge, beautiful facility which I have described in previous blogs. It is at an elevation of 7000 feet so the air is quite crisp. I love that after dinner when getting into the comfy beds with multiple blankets, someone has placed a hot water bottle at the foot of the bed. 

There we met up with 3 other volunteers, a couple from Montreal, Canada and a gal from Cape Cod in USA. We exchanged the usual info of names interests, etc to get to know one another.

We has a lovely dinner, a good night’s sleep, huge breakfast and off we went around 8:30 AM to traverse the long drive 5 to 6 hours (with a stop in the big town of Narok to buy stuff we’d not remembered to pack or yummy snacks at the huge supermarket) to Pardamat conservancy and the facilities called the Wildlife Tourism Center of the Maasai Mara. 

Now two weeks have passed by here. the routine consists of many hours in the game vehicle observing animals and counting them. I discussed this in my posts in the past so time for some photos. Also pulling weeds, picking up trash, and even digging a ditch for water drainage along side the dirt road. 

The rains have come very early. Thunder showers in the late afternoon many days. The rain brings the lush green grass, but makes the road ways dreadful.
