this is maybe a silly question. how do you go about getting represented by an agency as an illustrator? i dont expect you to have the one true definite answer of course. but i was curious of your artist career journey!
Not a silly question! And you're right, I don't have the one true definitive answer, but I do have some insight! The honest answer is--you look up agencies, read their submissions policies, and contact them! Find someone looking to rep what you're looking to have repped, send some nice emails, and wait. There are a lot of rejections in publishing/illustration, and you'll probably face some here. It's terrible but not personal, it's just a lot of people trying to find the right match! Some people participate in portfolio days, submissions events, and hashtags like #kidlitpostcard day on twitter and get "discovered" that way. My own personal answer is weirder. I was supposed to be doing that, but I was also building a career making art prints/merch and selling directly at comic/anime conventions--and that put me in front of some agents. I also went to SCBWI (society for children's book writers and illustrators) conferences and paid for seminars/participated in portfolio shows that got my work directly in front of editors and agents. The conventions were actually where things happened for me. In the same year (I think? Around 2015-2016) I was tapped for a panel at ECCC called Hire That Woman! And I was the only illustrator, so I met some awesome comics writers. I hit it of great with one of them and we ended up developing a book together and pitching it--and my dream publisher picked it up! I also met an agent at ECCC who was interested in repping for picture books AND graphic novels at a time few kidlit agents were comfy with comics. I signed with her, and we've been working together ever since! I owe so much to Mairghread Scott (who wrote The City on the Other Side, my debut gn) for dragging me out of obscurity and getting my work in front of a publisher--who did have my on their radar but that was the clincher. My story is a combo of luck and making my own luck--I was making comics, indie picture books, tons of illustration, and children's book portfolios constantly, so I was prepared with manuscripts and ideas when someone did tap me. But the truth is, I am not a confident person and have crushing insecurities that I try not to let escape onto the internet, so I was too scared to send emails to agencies for years. When my current agent approached me, it was pretty much the exact month I'd promised myself to start doing it. I'm terrible at asking for advice and approaching people who have more experience than me (eldest sibling syndrome) so I try to make up for that by being helpful when someone reaches out to me!

I'm excited for ECCC but I'm worried about choosing cosplays. This year was the first 3 day con I'd been to since...2015? Maybe 16? Okay yeah my Kuronekocon badge says 2016, ANYWAYS, it was wild to pick multiple cosplays again but what am I gonna do this year...
I mentioned it before, but I would LOVE to do Palamedes Sextus because he's the easiest Locked Tomb character I could do, BUT, without someone cosplaying Camilla with me, I'd look more like Milo Thatch from Atlantis, so I can't do that one solo. So what else do I bring??
Presumably Brandee and I will do a couple cosplay as long as she gets a Lumine cosplay made, and I'm CLEARLY bringing the Bot, but what's third?? I could try and do Venom again and actually bring the makeup this time to fuck myself up, or if the Toku group is there I could do GokaiRed again, but I'm not sure
Realistically I'll have to wait until the con gets closer and the schedule gets posted to make educated decisions but even still. I just...I hope I get to see people again. I met some really awesome people last year and was too shy to interact much but if I see them again maybe I'll 👉👈

Extreme rain in Nova Scotia exceeds once-in-a-century event
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is working on analyzing data from the flooding rain in the context of past historical events.
CTV News spoke with the governmental agency on the data that they have so far.
According to the data the organization has for Halifax International Airport and surrounding areas, a one-in-a-hundred-year daily rainfall would be about 172 mm. A one-in-a-hundred-year event is defined as an event that will be equalled or exceeded on average once every 100 years.
Reports from this event in that area had totals exceeding 200 mm.
“Safe to say this is more than a one-in-a-hundred-year rain event,” noted Bob Robichaud, Warning Prepardness Meteorologist with ECCC.
As for rainfall rates, the storm peaked at a recorded near 40 mm in one hour, which according to Robichaud, is a one-in-ten-year event. That means that the extreme rainfall rates seen with this storm can be expected to occur more frequently than the extreme totals. He noted that the Thanksgiving Day flood in October of 2016 in Cape Breton also a recorded rain rate of 40 mm in one hour.
CTV News asked Robichaud if, given climate change, could these events become more frequent. He noted that one of more assured outcomes of a warmer climate is more extreme rainfall events and a higher frequency of occurrence. He added that just a few weeks ago, a similar event was seen in the state of Vermont.
“We are seeing more of them,” said Robichaud. “We won’t necessarily see them all happen here in the Maritimes, but we are seeing a higher frequency of these events.”

COSPLAY IN ALASKA : Matt Jarvis
Remembering my childhood, I believe My Neighbor Totoro was my first anime feature film, didn’t mind the dubbed version until discovering subbed versions of animes in my high school years.
My first con was Senshi Con 2007, and it was not only the biggest stress relief I needed but also opened my imagination of a new hobbies of cosplay, being involved in gaming, and seeing everyone showing off their creativity.
Having attended 10 Senshi Cons(2007-2014, 2016-2019), 6 out of state cons(ALA, ECCC, Aurora Con, Sakura Con, Dragon Con, and SDCC) is showing that this hobby will never end for me.
Tell me about your new workshop
Having a rushed move to a downsized condo wasn’t going to be easy when Senshi Con 2017 was approaching fast, luckily with a help of a friend we managed to set up and organize most of my props, wigs, and finished cosplays. Hopefully in the future I’ll be able to make advanced cosplays for either local or out of state cons.
How did you decided on doing Matt and what was the response like at Senshi Con ?
Matt the radar technician was a cosplay that I said, “I’m going to make this happen, plus we share the same name.” after seeing the SNL sketch. He’s been one of my favorite cosplays all year, showing it off at ALA, ECCC, and finally at Senshi Con where everyone responded with positive feedback, plus trying to get me to break character where I can respond with various Kylo Ren fury outburst but then had to channel it back into saying “Oh I’m really Kylo Ren.”

On Friday 16 November 2018 the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) handed down a guilty verdict against ageing former Khmer Rouge leaders Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan in what’s known as Case 002/02. Out of fears that they would die before a verdict was reached, the case against them had been split into multiple parts. As such, they were already found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life in prison in Case 002/01.
So what’s so significant about last week’s verdict?
First and foremost is the crimes that were considered as part of Case 002/02. The first conviction against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan had related primarily to the forced evacuation of Phnom Penh in April 1975 and to a specific instance (at Tuol Po Chrey in Pursat province) where members of the previous government’s military were killed. This second part of the case considered a much broader range of crimes, and crimes that reflect the experiences of many more Cambodians during the Khmer Rouge regime.
Case 002/02 included crimes related to the appalling conditions in cooperatives and worksites, torture and killings at security centres, discrimination against the Vietnamese, ethnic Cham minority, and Buddhists, and forced marriage. In a survey conducted in 2008, when Cambodians were asked which crimes Khmer Rouge leaders should be held accountable for, only 4.9% of them mentioned forced evacuation, which had been the focus of Case 002/01. On the other hand, 80% listed killing, 63% listed starvation, 56% listed forced labour, and 33% referred to torture. Trials such as those before the ECCC are meant to do more than just sentence perpetrators; they are tasked with contributing to a sense of substantive justice, and with helping to find the truth about what happened. So, although these two defendants had already been convicted and sentenced, it had not yet been for what were considered to be the right crimes.
There are two particular crimes worth drawing attention to: forced marriage and genocide.
Forced marriage
The Khmer Rouge’s policy of forced marriage, and the rape that occurred within those forced marriages, was not well known before the ECCC, despite estimates now that 400,000 people were forcibly married under the Khmer Rouge. It is largely through the testimony of civil parties (victims who have become parties to the proceedings before the ECCC) and through the advocacy of their lawyers that this issue was brought into the spotlight.
In harrowing testimony, victims recounted how they were too scared to refuse to be married but that they “could see that some people shed their tears quietly”. Couples would be monitored in their homes the night of their marriage by Khmer Rouge cadre to ensure they consummated the marriage. Another victim recalled, “I had to sleep with my husband because I would be in danger if I did not sleep with my husband. Because there was a militiaman eavesdropping, I submitted myself to be a wife. I could not avoid, so I tried to take this”. Women who refused to have sex with their new husband were sometimes raped by local Khmer Rouge leaders.
Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan were convicted of crimes against humanity for both forced marriages and the rapes that occurred with them. This conviction is significant from an international law perspective for recognising forced marriage as a gendered crime that was committed against both male and female victims, and for addressing it at a national scale. It is also highly significant to those victims who came forward after decades of silence. However, the ECCC has also been criticised for not addressing sexual violence that occurred under the Khmer Rouge in contexts other than forced marriage.
Genocide
Undoubtedly, the genocide conviction issued by the ECCC received the greatest attention from the Case 002/02 verdict.
Nuon Chea was found guilty of genocide against the Vietnamese and the Cham, and Khieu Samphan was found guilty of genocide against the Vietnamese (but not the Cham, with the Trial Chamber finding that “the evidence did not rise to the level of proving that Khieu Samphan actively assisted or facilitated the execution of the genocidal policy against the Cham”). Curiously, the summary of the judgement notes that “Judge YOU Ottara appends a separate opinion on genocide to the Judgement”. This is the first separate opinion issued by a single Cambodian judge, but its contents are not yet known.
There is immense power in the label of genocide. The actions covered by the conviction for crimes against humanity are just as horrific, yet it is those considered genocide that often attract far more attention. This is just as true in Cambodia, where the Khmer Rouge period is referred to as a genocide in Khmer (ប្រល័យពូជសាសន៍).
Legally, however, genocide only refers to the “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”. This has led to divisive debates amongst scholars of Cambodia over whether some or all of the crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge could be considered genocide. It also means that the experiences of ethnically-Khmer Cambodians (the vast majority of the population) are not covered by the definition, and the ECCC has not found the crimes committed against them to be genocide.
Here is where the verdict is ripe for misinterpretation. News headlines are very carefully crafted to engage readers by referring to genocide without explicitly misrepresenting the verdict (for example, the New York Times said “Khmer Rouge’s Slaughter in Cambodia is Ruled a Genocide”). For most people, Cambodian and foreigners alike, the details of this verdict will have little to no impact compared to the overarching label of genocide. However, there is a longstanding concern that if it enters into public consciousness in Cambodia that the ECCC found the treatment of the Vietnamese was a genocide but that the treatment of the Khmer was not, that this could further inflame anti-Vietnamese sentiment.
A complicated legacy
The final question to ask about the ECCC and Case 002/02 is: where to from here?
Last week, a summary of the judgement was read out before the Trial Chamber and released online. However, the full judgement is not yet available, with the only information given is that it will be released “in due course”. This decision has been criticised in a report from Stanford University’s WSD Handa Center for Human Rights and International Justice noting that Cambodia’s (notoriously weak) judiciary often relies on summary judgements without full reasoning, and that the ECCC had a chance to leave a different legacy.
The timeline for appeals will not start until this full judgement is released, although both defence teams have already flagged their intention to file appeals. In Case 002/01 the judgement was announced in August 2014 and the appeals proceedings concluded in November 2016. The current completion plan for the ECCC, foresees an appeal judgement in Case 002/02 in the third quarter of 2020.
As for trials against other suspects, myself and other New Mandala contributors have written about the reasons why it is highly unlikely these contentious cases will go ahead. In the aftermath of the Case 002/02 verdict, Minister of Interior Sar Kheng said that since there are “no more” top Khmer Rouge leaders, the government’s policy is that “now this process has ended”. It is hardly surprising, but serves as additional evidence that once the Case 002/02 appeals conclude, so too will the ECCC.

whats ur favourite SamCait moment and why? and worse moment?
Oh man, Anon. OH. MAN. I lovehate this question. How can you do this to me?! Picking favorites for me is near IMPOSSIBLE and now you want me to choose a fav SamCait moment?? UGH. Fine. If that means I have to stare at my SC folder for hours to decide, so be it 😜
As per usual when people ask me to pick favorites, I’mma break the rules. So here are my top 5 favorite moments (I mean, even this was difficult to narrow down to and I changed my mind like 10 times, so you can’t blame me xD).
1) “So proud of this man..!!” - LA Marathon Selfie
Maybe it’s because personally as a runner I could never imagine after all that training and having set a goal pace and time for myself, that I would then break stride for this long to take a selfie and chat and whatever else they did for even a 5k run. SO COME ON. Who stops in the middle of a marathon?? Sam Heughan, that’s who! And I LOVE the fact that Caitriona waited out there for him with a homemade sign around her neck (even if she tried to play it off later that she only thought to go out to support him at the last minute xD). I could just imagine how loudly she was cheering for him as he went by. This moment was just all sorts of squee-worthy!
2) “Is it weird to say we watched it together?” - Access Hollywood
Oh, you know. Just watching The Wedding episode. Drunkenly. With wine. Together. Even if it weren’t for this fact alone (which I’m STILL screaming about, let’s be honest), just look at their reaction when the interviewer asks them about it. Caitriona giggling like a mad woman and blushing like she’s just been caught red-handed at something. And Sam looking like he wanted to get caught on this fact. I wish I could download this vid and make a gifset because stills just don’t do this moment justice. I will never not smile like an idiot watching this interview xD And thanks to them livetweeting The Reckoning, we know what their (more G-rated) TV watching looks like…
3) The Random 👅 Moment from SDCC 2014
That man will do anything to make that woman laugh. He’s proudly admitted it. We’ve seen endless proof of it. But it could not have been more evident than in this moment from SDCC that has always been one stuck in my mind as one of the all time great SC moments. Sam was in the middle of answering a fan’s question (about letting J x C’s relationship grow organically) and he just turns to Caitriona – who is already smiling at him on the brink of The Giggles – and sticks out his tongue at her to push her over the edge. For absolutely no reason other than BECAUSE 👏 HE 👏 CAN 👏👏👏 Then he finishes his answer with the most self-satisfied smile. I also love that after he finishes he turns back to her again and she nods encouragingly.
4) Pre-Red Carpet 2016 Golden Globes
I believe it was the SoCal Outlanders that captured this incredible moment and I will forever be grateful to them for that. Just look at Caitriona’s bashful expression here. Sam is obviously complimenting her and you’d think that she – a former model with international success – had never been called beautiful in her life! And Sam looking as if Caitriona invented wearing haute couture. This is just such an endearing little moment that, to me, is almost more telling than any big gesture would be. In a sea of people they are the only two that exist. How beautiful is that?
5) You, Me, and Eddie Makes Three - ECCC Announcement
I know I’m not the only one who squeed out loud when Sam’s video announcing ECCC suddenly turned into him, Caitriona, and EDDIE announcing the event together! It’s always lovely getting to see that sassy little fat pudding anyway, but to see her with Sam and Caitriona in the makeup trailer?? Too perfect! (someone give me bonus points for not saying “purrfect” like I wanted to please and thank you xD) For all that they talk about that cat, I never thought we’d get to see SamCait with her like this – Like it’s the most normal thing in the world! Like a proud little family 😻💜
So there you have it, my top 5 favorite SC moments! I know you have that second part of your ask. But, I’m sorry, I’m not going to answer it. Because 1) I’m about #AccentuatingThePositive, not dwelling on the negative and 2) well, you could probably already guess anyway. Besides, there really is so much goodness to be had, who even has time for those other moments? 😉
Thank you kindly for the fun ask, Anon!

Going to a con for the first time since OrcaCon in January of 2020 and I can't find my badge holder. I got it at ECCC in like 2016 and I've used it for my badge at every con since. It always lived in my bedside table but I've moved twice since I last used it. Been tearing the place apart looking everywhere and nothing.
It was very comfortable and had an extra little storage pouch and was super secure for both my badge and my favorite pins. No free lanyard could compare

Video
This is by far one of the coolest cosplay videos I've ever been in. I'm afraid I dont remember the name of the film maker but I believe this was taken at ECCC 2016 A shout out to @foamfriction being in the video with their amazing trio of Skyrim cosplays!

Moving to Young Animal, Doyle detailed the concept behind the imprint (which was announced two years ago at ECCC 2016): “new characters, also fresh spins on some existing DC properties.
Doyle recapped the freshly wrapped “Milk Wars” crossover between Young Animal and the DC Universe. “I remember when we were first told the event was called ‘Milk Wars,’ and the villain would me Milkman Man, we were all on board at that point,” Houser said. “The whole concept is RetCo is essentially homogenizing and repackaging reality to sell it as entertainment across the universe. They’re trying o make squeaky clean versions of some of the DC heroes.”
Shade the Changing Woman #1 by Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone is out this Wednesday, March 7, and Shade will meet Shade the Changing Man in the issue. Eternity Girl #1 by Magdalene Visaggio and Sonny Liew is scheduled for release on March 14. It’s about a “former superhero, former superspy, and she wants to die, but she can’t,” Doyle told the crowd. Cave Carson Has an Interstellar Eye #1 follows a week later on March 21, from Jon Rivera and Michael Avon Oeming. “He goes from spelunking on Earth to exploring black holes in outer space.”
The refresh of the Young Animal line continues on March 28, with Mother Panic: Gotham: A.D. #1 by Houser and Moustafa. “She’s dealing with the fallout of this reality she never wanted to be in, after dealing with an adventure she never wanted to be a part of,” Houser said, but Violet Paige’s first priority is finding her mother. “Since we’re in a new version of Gotham, we get to play around a little more with some of the Bat-characters without worrying we’re ruining continuity.”
“One of the things I’ve always loved is drawing my take on a character, even just for fun,” Moustafa told Doyle. “Getting to do it officially, when it doesn’t have to go through a lot of scrutiny [because it’s set in a Gotham apart from mainline continuity], we can do a lot of cool stuff. You guys are really giving us a lot of leeway to try cool things.”
Houser said the guiding aesthetic of Mother Panic was “neon-noir.” Moustafa mentioned the visuals of Batman Beyond and Blade Runner 2049 as inspirations.
Turning to the future of Vertigo, Doyle referred back to a teaser released last July at Comic-Con International in San Diego, which read “080818.” It refers to the date of August 8, 2018, the launch of the Sandman Universe. Doyle said this marks the start of the next era of Vertigo. This led to a video featuring Neil Gaiman discussing the new imprint.
“It’s all going to start in the [Sandman Universe one-shot], which will introduce spaces beyond the Dreaming,” Gaiman said. “It’s going to introduce a new House, called the House of Whispers. Following the special, we’re going to be introducing four new series, written and drawn by the most incredible collaborators I could ask for.”
