RWBY Vol 9 finale/RWBY: Roman Holiday Spoilers below

So during the run of volume 9, I decided to buy and read RWBY: Roman Holiday by EC Meyers. I finished the book before episode 8 came out, and now that we see what happens to Neo at the end of the volume, I'm glad I finished the book before the end of the volume, but especially before episode 8.

I'm really sad that none of Neo's backstory was animated. We only got to see hints of her past in episode 8. RWBY: Roman Holiday really gives such a great in depth backstory of Neo and Roman Torchwick.

If I were a part of the writing team of CRWBY, I would have suggested just scrapping Cinder's backstory, and replaced it with a shortened version of Neo's and Roman's story. If they went into a bit more detail much earlier in RWBY about Neo and Roman, Romans death, and Neo's anger towards Ruby, and Neo's ascension would have had much more meaning.

After reading the book, Neo's anger towards Ruby just made so much more sense. For me, Neo went from some generic throw away antagonist to an actual character.

As for the volume 9 finale, I'm officially completely invested in what happens to Neo. I really hope we get to see her again. If anyone deserves a redemption arc, or mini redemption arc, it's Neo.

Honestly, I think that after the initial rush wears off this volume and everyone takes a step back, even more people are gonna start being like "what" with this volume during the next hiatus. I mean, there's just so much wrong with it.

But yeah, I've seen a surprising amount of even loyal devoted rwby fans who liked this season criticizing some of the writing choices. Of course everyone's still exploding about how much they love Little, how much they hate the Cat, how much they liked the cool animation in the Red Like Roses Part III scene... But there's also a lot of people saying "idk that felt rushed for such an important arc" or "I think the episode after Ruby drank the tea wasn't that well done" or "I wish they'd showed Ruby's team reacting more to what happened."

In the long run, though, I don't think it's really gonna hurt RT. Most of their fans are 'through thick and thin' fans, they're still gonna see rwby justice league no matter how much it might suck, they're still gonna buy bumbleby merch on the official RT site no matter if their money goes to an abusive fucked up company, they're still gonna tweet 'greenlightvolume10' whether or not RT has yet again glorified attempted suicide, they're still gonna buy EC Meyers books about Coco whether or not she was based on a nazi, and there's still gonna be people attacking youtubers for daring to criticize the show because they think rwby 'deserves better' no matter how problematic the show is. I feel like the rwby writers could literally put out a season that villainizes Ruby and has Yang beat her up, makes Jaune the new leader of her team and makes Weiss desperate to date him, has Raven become the new ruler of Vacuo, features a redeemed off screen Cinder and Watts who is somehow alive, kills off Qrow and Blake, and brings back Penny again except now that she's back to a robot they decided to make her emotionless and very not-Penny-like.... And the fans would still go freaking off the walls for that and talk about how lifechanging and good it is because it's subverting expectations.

Gotta be honest? I was sort of rooting for Yatsu being the LGBT character mentioned in the Goodreads review. Coco and Velvet being LGBT just feels like a really safe choice to make and just makes the drought of male LGBT characters in this franchise all the more apparent. The girls get Ilia and her full redemption arc, Saff and Terra’s domestic paradise and now Coco and Velvet, while the guys are stuck with Scarlet (a flat character who hasn’t shown up in three years and had his sexuality revealed in a non-canon manga), Pilot Boi (who had a mention of a boyfriend cut to avoid the Bury Your Gays trope) and the Mistral plant bois. 

We’re fucking drowning in well written men in this show, as you can see. I should apologize, I’m sure Coco’s fans are ecstatic to see that Crosshares is a little closer to canon and they’ll be over the moon, but I’m just getting sick of waiting for the show to remember LGBT men exist too. My Thoughts

I was really excited to get my hands on this because I am in desperate need of representation, and then I found out there are two Filipino stories I just about died. Finally! Finally something for me! My culture, as unorganized as it is, is rich with many folktales from creation myths to terrifying creatures of the night. Then I deflated after reading them. Roshani Chokshi’s “Forbidden Fruit” was the better of the two, with her whimsical, flowery writing style perfectly suited to the story of Maria Makiling. The story felt like it was Maria herself, light on her feet and softly treading on mountainside grass. It was objectively well written, but I felt like something was missing. Maybe that’s me expecting more from it, but it wasn’t quite what I needed. Melissa de la Cruz’s “Code of Honor” was, to me, downright offensive. It tells the story of a “manananggal,” which she calls “aswang,” whose mother died thereby making it necessary for her to flee. De la Cruz’s writing is clunky at best, full of telling rather than showing. What particularly irked me was how the main character constantly reassured herself that coming back home to the Philippines was a mistake, that she didn’t belong there, only to find that she truly had a family among white vampires in NYC. It was frustrating because it reinforced the already popular notion that in order to belong, one must leave the Philippines. I also just hated how often the reader has to be reminded that the main character was a vampire. We get it. You’re “bad” for wanting blood. Please stop.

As for the other stories, it was a mix varying from really wonderful to Bad. 

“The Crimson Cloak” by Cindy Pon is by far my favorite, the narrator of the story emulating Jane Eyre by addressing the reader during crucial parts to set the record straight. I love the main character’s stubbornness and playful nature, and her story felt almost as though it were the original fairy tale. 

Alyssa Wong’s “Olivia’s Table” was delightful in exploring The Hungry Ghost Festival and serving the readers a sampling of some delicious-sounding food! It has a good balance of flashbacks and current events, and it’s overall a well-rounded story. 

“Still Star-Crossed” by Sona Charaipotra was frustrating because it might have been interesting had it been done better. As it stands, it only felt like the first chapter in a longer work because it was all set up and no pay off. Nothing actually happens except for the love interest showing stalker behavior, despite the main character showing visible signs of discomfort (aka literally running away). It was incomplete and not fully rounded as a short story. (And the first person POV with really flowery writing do Not mix).

“Spear Carrier” by Rahul Kanakia, about a kid who finds himself in the middle of a war because he wished to be a hero, was exhausting. It was full of lamentations of finding meaning in life, and it kept telling the reader “Look at me! I think a lot! I’m a deep guy!,” which got so tired after the first time. And the result? Nothing interesting. Just the main character being a “coward.” This was not worth the short time it took for me to read it.

“The Land of the Morning Calm” by E.C. Meyers - I love the video game aspect that mixes with a ghost story! 

“Daughter of the Sun” by Shveta Thakrar - Very whimsical and lovely, but sometimes the flowery writing got distracting. I liked the mashup of different myths.

“Forbidden Fruit” by Roshani Chokshi

“Nothing Into All” by Reneé Ahdieh - I like Ahdieh’s writing a lot, and this read kind of like one of those Pixar short films. I wish there were consequences for the brother’s actions, though.

“Eyes Like Candlelight” by Julie Kagawa - The first part was paced well, and once we get to the ending, it felt almost rushed in concluding it with little explanation. Still good, though.

“Bullet, Butterfly” by Elsie Chapman - This was interesting, but it would be better as a longer work so there isn’t insta-love and the world building can be done better. 

“The Counting of Vermillion Beads” by Aliette De Boddard - I feel like this story was told through a foggy mist, like it’s the sky: there but untouchable. I can’t tell if that’s good or bad.

“The Smile” by Aisha Saeed - I like that this tackled the idea that master/servant romance as Not Good and gave the main character the power to choose for herself. I still take issue with flowery writing in first person POV and the phrase “hugged my curves.” 

“Girls Who Twirl and Other Dangers” by Preeti Chhibber -  There were two stories in this, a reiteration (kinda) of the original myth and the actual retelling. I liked the the myth of Mā Durgā and Mahishāsur better than the contemporary story.

“Steel Skin” by Lori M. Lee - It could have worked were it more developed. Needed another round of editing.

So we’re getting a book on Neo and Torchwick’s backstories and that just makes me nervous. Just because it’s hard to say what they will over explain some things that didn’t need to be or add relatively important aspects of the characters that was never shown in the series and will probably never be shown going forward. And while I’m not that opposed to sympathetic backstories I just hope they remember that they were/are villains and that they can convincingly remember to get them to that point. To write them with the fact they assist with horrible things in the future that doesn’t go against type of moral rule that we wouldn’t know about.

It also make me scared in the terms of Ironwood (and AceOps) is using these novels to then provided him a backstory. And given the poor writing of James in 8 and trying to retcon any of the good he showed and ignore his complex they made him; if he got a book it would be a mess. Cause their only way to get to their contrived version of V8 Ironwood would be to double down on his backstory and try to write him as convincingly manipulative throughout. However another problem they had/have with Ironwood is despite their efforts they still unintentionally write him with understandable motives and logic and good emotional moments which forces them to get around these moments by making Ironwood a full on cartoonish villain. That also begs to ask if the AceOps getting any background how much they are going to hurt everyone’s characterization especially since V8 had this seemed to enjoy dragging Clover through the mud. Like posthumously trying to define his character more but in a way that’s I’ll handled and unconvincing just because he wasn’t flushed out in V7 outside of being a better version of Qrow.

Hey I’m pretty sure I’m overreacting, maybe. But I’m at such a crossroads with they writing.

Honestly, I'm real nervous about how the books are going to portray Neo and Roman. I don't like EC Meyers, I don't like how he writes or how he handles characters, and I highly doubt I'm going to like how he portrays my favorite partners in crime.

And the funny thing is, I'm with everyone who doesn't want Neo to be an abuse victim and doesn't want her and Roman to be portrayed as overly sympathetic, I agree with that, and I don't want Neo to be redeemed... But my headcanoned up backstory for Roman and Neo was specifically invented for a fanfiction where they were mostly redeemed, lol, and made them really sympathetic (including Neo having been an abuse victim.) And I've been writing for them that way for so long that I know that I'm going to be disappointed either way.

I don't want Neo to be redeemed or them to be portrayed as overly sympathetic, but I don't want them to be too unsympathetic either, because A. I love them, and B. I really don't enjoy the idea that Cinder was given this sympathetic backstory and sympathetic framing, but the people she used and employed who have at least slight hints towards having been partially coerced are the heartless, irredeemable ones. So basically it's a lose lose.

As for the Ironwood/Ace Ops thing, did I miss an announcement for a book about them? Or is this just generally talking about how you hope they don't use the new Roman book to push Anti-Ironwood stuff? Either way, I'd also be kind of nervous about that, because it seems very much so like something EC Meyers would do, actually.
