Purpose of my Capstone
My Senior Capstone at UAHS is focused on the biological and societal factors that influence the development and treatment of Eating Disorders. The goal is to promote awareness of the severity, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of Anorexia.
Anorexia Nervosa defined: Anorexia Nervosa is a disorder of unknown etiology that tends to affect young women but can affect anyone. This illness is characterized by restricted eating, severe emaciation, and distorted body image, as well as high rates of chronicity, morbidity, and mortality (Kaye 2013). Anorexia nervosa has a high rate of chronicity, meaning that someone that develops the disorder most often suffers from it for many years and may never recover and could suffer from the illness for the rest of his/her life. Anorexia also has a high mortality rate and those that suffer from the disorder often suffer from one or more mental health disorders as well, such as anxiety, depression, or OCD. There are two types of Anorexia diagnoses: restricting type and binge-purge type. Someone with binge-purge type Anorexia still engages in restricted eating, but also has episodes of binging and purging, thus making this different from Bulimia Nervosa, in which someone doesn鈥檛 engage in restricting but only binges and purges.

Caught between doing and not doing.
Trapped in the fear of what will happen if I do or don't.聽
Afraid of the consequences of following through or chickening out.聽
Staring down at the pureness of the porcelain, the clarity of the water, soon to possibly be marred with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The one meal that got away. My finger tentatively placed on my lip as it quivers. The tears begin to roll, I can't believe I am here again. Not again.聽
If I rid myself of the oh so nourishing sediments that reside in my belly, my body will suffer, my hair will fall, my nails will thin, my throat will bleed, but if I contain them my nemesis within will clobber my with words, you are not perfect, you are ugly, you can't leave this.聽
Besides my own feuding voices, I hear the support of loved ones pleading me to give it time, but giving is so passive, submissive even. Time heals all blah blah blah. Well today I refuse to give it my time. I will not spend my precious time giving into its maliciousness.聽A day's torment, is worth a lifetime of being able to say "Yes, I'm recovered" without it being a lie and a genuine smile on my face.
I return the white clean lid to its place and proudly wipe the tears from my eyes. I gather my thoughts and compose myself to walk out of the door and out of the battle field and into the real world.聽
Today's battle is won for today I did not do.聽

Get off the Scale
Get off the scale! You are beautiful. Your beauty, just like your capacity for life, happiness, and success is immeasurable. Day after day countless people across the globe get on a scale in search of validation of beauty and social acceptance.
Get off the scale! I have yet to see a scale that can tell you how enchanting your eyes are. I have yet to see a scale that can show you how wonderful your hair looks when the sun shines it's glorious rays on it. I have yet to see a scale that can thank you for your compassion, sense of humour, and contagious smile. Get off the scale because I have yet to see one that can admire you for you perseverance when challenged in life.
It's true, the scale can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That's it. It cannot measure beauty, talent, purpose, life force, possibility, strength, or live. Don't give the scale more power than it has earner. Get off the scale and live your life. You are beautiful!

100% true! I have started to realise that my worth is so much more than a number on a scale, that number will not define who I am so a person!

Yes! There is no such thing as a perfect body and if it means sacrificing my mental health and becoming sick I don鈥檛 want it!

If only it was that simple! Pet hate when I hear people say this, an eating disorder is a mental illness and is not a lifestyle choice, people do not chose to have this mental illness!

Recovery Is Possible
It's not a guarantee. It's a possibility.
It's聽not simple. It is difficult and sometimes seems impossible.
It's not a one step process. It's a multi-step process complete with twists and turns and bending roads.
It's not the same for everyone.
It's not always a happy process. It's not always a sad process. It is empowering.
It's not about pleasing other people. It is not about them. It's about YOU.
It's not about perfection. It is about honesty. It is about self-discovery and self-affirmation.
It's not about what you don't have. It's about using what you've got.
It's not about hiding. It's about finding and displaying.
It's not a quick fix. It's a life long plan set into motion by truth and nurturing and self love.
It's not about external factors or environment. It is about what's within.
It is not crazy. It is real.
Recovery is Possible.
