Anyone got advice for when your doctor says to go low carb but you also have a stomach condition that only really digests carbs cuz like...wtf am I supposed to do here exactly?

How to know juicing are safe?
As fresh juicing and smoothies becomes more popular, it’s important to know that there are a few minor risks. I stress that these are VERY minor, and nothing that should discourage anyone from juicing or smoothies with all the amazing benefits including better health, more energy, a delicious alternative to sugary drinks especially for your children, and my favorite, the most convenient way to consume all the recommended daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact, a fresh juice or smoothie is just about the healthiest thing you can do for yourself, your family, and your friends! So let’s be aware of these concerns, but keep a healthy perspective!
Food Borne Illness
The CDC reports that produce is the leading cause of food poisoning in the US (although more hospitalizations are due to dairy products and more deaths are attributed to poultry). Produce with the greatest risk are melons (the rough skin traps bacteria and gets carried to the flesh when cut) and packaged pre-cut leafy greens.
The CDC and FDA recommend rinsing your produce in cold water, don’t buy pre-cut veggies and fruits, and grow your own sprouts. Washing with soap is not recommended. For easy guidelines see this article by the University of Maine. Related Articles : https://www.juicingpoint.com/
Add a little vinegar for additional protection. A study published in the “Journal of Food Protection” found that washing apples with vinegar and water reduced bacteria significantly better than water alone. The premier food magazine, “Cook's Illustrated,” sponsored a similar experiment and found that vinegar killed approximately 98% of bacteria on the surface of fresh fruits and vegetables. No soaking required! And no vinegar taste! Just spray white vinegar on your produce and rinse.
But let’s put this in perspective I know folks who rarely rinse their produce and have never had a problem. I’m one of them! However, if you’re pregnant, or you're making juices or smoothies for your children – both have a greater risk of infection and illness - I’d surely rinse all produce. And every time I read something about the working conditions of huge farms that grow and harvest commercial foods, I start rinsing all my produce! Unlike packaged beverages which undergo pasteurization to eradicate harmful organisms, fresh juice can only be made less risky by rinsing your produce. Also, storing fresh juice makes it more vulnerable to bacteria so it’s best to drink it right away.
Toxic Substances
Some seeds, rind, and leaves of common fruits and vegetables should not be eaten! This will likely surprise you as much as it did me! The seeds of apples, peaches, apricots, cherries, and raspberries, as well as the leaves of carrots, rhubarb, parsnip, and Queen Anne’s Lace (wild carrot) contain toxic compounds, but the amounts are so minute as to be of no real concern.
The major compound is known as amygdalin which produces cyanide, but the amount is so small that your body easily neutralizes it. There are claims that amygdalin has positive uses including cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society reviews this claim in a thorough and balanced article, and for an alternative view click here. The bottom line is that you would have to eat handfuls of these seeds or pits AND DIGEST THEM to experience serious illness. The seeds and pits have a tough coating impervious to digestion by most mammals. Symptoms of amygdalin toxicity are severe stomach cramps, headache, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and seizures. However, if too many seeds were eaten and digested, one would likely vomit a few times and not develop any other symptoms.
The rind of orange and grapefruit has a small amount of a toxic compound now used as an insecticide. Ingesting a small amount is absolutely safe for you and your pets, but several orange peels will definitely upset the stomach.
There is also mention of toxic substances in some sprouts. This is another one of those pieces of info that's interesting but of no real health concern. In the interest of awareness here's a brief review of toxins in sprouts. Lathyrogen is found in an inedible species of bean in the genus Lathyrus. Inedible so not a concern. Saponins are found in bean sprouts and are not harmful, though some claim this is so because outside of the body in test tube conditions saponins kill red blood cells. They are not only harmless in the body but extremely beneficial for lowering cholesterol, protecting against heart disease, and fighting certain cancers. Canavanine is a toxic compound found in alfalfa seeds. However, as with the toxin in apple seeds, it is so minute as not to be an issue. An adult would have to consume 14,000 milligrams of canavanine at one time to feel any toxic effects. A large helping of alfalfa sprouts gives you a few milligrams. Digestive Issues
A while we’re on the subject of stomach upset, certain fruits and veggies are so powerful that you may experience some stomach distress if you drink too much of them. Too many leafy greens or wheatgrass can do this. For others, too much beet will do the same. For those with sensitive digestion, mixing raw fruits and veggies can do this. I mix them every day with no ill effect. Standard nutritional rules state that in generally fruits and veggies should be eaten separately, though certain fruits go well with certain vegetables. In fact certain mixes are highly recommended for juice fasting and dieting, and for fighting diseases. The most common ‘ill effect’ of mixing fruits and veggies is gas, because fruit digests faster and uses different digestive enzymes. Carrots and apples are considered exceptions – carrots go well with any fruit and apples go well with any veggie.
Nutritional Deficiency
This is a concern only for those who limit themselves to juice or smoothies alone for long periods, especially if you’re pregnant, a young person still growing, and women in and past menopause. You can get all necessary nutrients from fruits and vegetables, but special attention needs to be paid to nutritional requirements during long juice fasts and diets. The nutrients which need special attention are iron, protein, calcium, B12, zinc, and Omega 3 fatty acids. These are critical nutrients that are difficult but not impossible to get from a vegetarian, vegan, or all-juice diet.
Medical and Dental Issues
Grapefruit juice is contraindicated if you take certain medications. Talk to your physician or pharmacist if this is a concern. If you have any thyroid issues, compounds in raw cruciferous vegetables can interfere with your treatment. Again talk with your physician because thyroid and other health problems can be effectively improved with certain fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous veggies include kale, broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, turnips, arugula, Brussels sprouts, radishes, collard greens, kohlrabi, rutabaga, and watercress.
Another medical concern is diabetes. The old rule of thumb is that anyone who is diabetic should stay away from fruit and sweet veggies such as carrots, beets, etc. Recent research has overturned this with the discovery that many fruits and veggies have compounds that actually help regulate sugar levels better than cooked food. This is exciting news for diabetics so talk to your physician right away!
There is concern about the issue of fiber. Fresh juice separates 'pulp' from juice. The pulp is primarily insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber remains in the juice. Nonetheless, juice provides less fiber than the whole food unless one returns the pulp to the juice. For those who need more fiber in their diet, blended drinks (popularly known as 'smoothies') may be a better choice since they do not separate pulp from the juice. Pulp is also added calories so for weight loss, juice is a better choice.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation points out that compounds in dark leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.) can interfere with calcium absorption. They recommend that these rich foods be added to your juice recipes 2-3 times a week instead of every day.
Spinach is also high in oxalate, a compound that can lead to the formation of kidney stones. People with calcium oxalate kidney stones should avoid overdoing this veggie.
Don’t juice too many tomatoes or oranges if you have acid reflux since the high acid content can aggravate and even lead to acid reflux. Finally, there is a greater risk of gum disease and tooth decay chiefly among children and teenagers whose diets are entirely vegetables and fruits (vegan and vegetarian) without proper attention to the nutrients mentioned above according to Dr. Ludwig Leibsohn of the Academy of General Dentistry. These nutrients are not easily found in a strict fruit and veggie diet.

Episode #11 The Plant Based Diet "Prescription"
Hello again! This is the podcast show notes section of Health Interventions For Your Practice! The topic at hand is the plant-based diet.
 I truly do not believe that the answer to everything is pharmaceutical based. I also believe that we have gotten so far off track that it’s going to take extreme measures to turn things back around. Just look at our patient population. They are getting sicker and sicker. The comorbidity rates are climbing, as are the obesity rates. The inflammation that is brewing inside of us from our poor choices and environmental exposures is contributing to our current state of health or lack thereof. 
 One of the ways that you can reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, treat diabetes and hyperlipidemia without medications is by adopting a plant-based diet. It is actually becoming more mainstream to adopt a plant-based diet.  Which is making it easier to find more plant-based options at restaurants and grocery stores. Which makes it easier to have this conversation with patients.
The plant-based diet is not one that everyone is going to want to participate in. I am completely aware of that. I am also aware that you were going to get objections about giving up meat and animal-based products in the beginning. I have been able to have patients agreeable to trying this for a few days per week or having only one meat-based meal per day. There are many ways to help implement a more plant focused diet into your patients’ lives. 
There are many views on plant-based and many objections to plant-based nutrition. And there are misconceptions about a plant-based diet. Almost anything can be taken from good to bad, depending on one’s interpretation.  Some of the misinterpretation that takes the plant-based diet from good to bad is actually what is perceived plant-based in the lay community. Some have adopted the view that just not eating meat or meat byproducts constitutes as a healthy plant-based diet. Not really so. Often, they are still consuming high amounts of sugar, saturated fats and other processed by- products from processed foods.
So here we go... into the plant-based world.
I’m going to start with the benefits of a plant-based diet, how to do this healthfully, some of the things to be aware of in a plant-based diet and how to start the conversation with your patients.
Just like most everyone else, I once upon a time scoffed at the thought of not eating meat or animal-based products. How can I go without dairy? How could I ever live without cheese? How could I possibly get enough protein?
After doing some research on plant-based diet, I decided to get on board. I have a very strong family history of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and heart disease. I do not want any of those diagnoses for myself. I also like to practice what I preach as you know. I cannot ask my patients to do some thing that I have not tried myself. I like to be able to experiment with myself or very close family members to monitor outcomes and safety. And also, to be able to give real life tips. What did I have to lose anyway? If it didn’t work out, if I felt terrible, if my labs didn’t show any improvement, it was only me that had to suffer.
Well......, guess what happened?
I have lost 25 pounds without even trying! I am never hungry; I do not crave anything. I do not feel deprived. I feel better, I sleep better, I have more energy. My skin is clearer, and I recently drew a lipid panel on myself. My total cholesterol was 194, my HDL 95, triglycerides 33 and my LDL 67. I wasn’t sure that those numbers were actually possible! My previous cholesterol was 194, triglycerides 115, HDL 80 and LDL 91. My glucose from 99 to 87. TPO antibodies from 15 to 0. 
For full disclosure, I will also admit that I have not been participating much in exercise lately, as I’ve been a bit busy with this new adventure in podcasting and online training program production. Which, I Feel has been a wonderful trade-off for a short period of time. I tell you this so that you know my numbers were not skewed by my exercise or some crazy relaxing, stress-free lifestyle. I AM a practicing provider you know. And we are currently in the midst of the Covid pandemic, which makes any practicing provider’s life a bit more insane trying to keep up with the guidelines and adjustments in everyday practice.
I am sure that many of you have seen the Netflix shows and documentaries on the plant-based diet by now. Many of them are pretty good at getting the general population to stop for a moment and think about what they might be eating, but shortly after they watch the show they go back to a normal regimen. And that is where, once you have learned some of the benefits, hopefully you will be able to give it a try yourself and encourage your patients to continue on a plant-based diet and support them.
Dr. Dean Ornish is one of the Pioneers in developing protocols for using a plant-based diet and other lifestyle modifications to reverse heart disease. The evidence is very clear of all of the benefits associated with reducing the intake of meat and animal-based products. Heart disease CAN be reversed with a plant-based diet!  I will save the soapbox of some of these things for future episodes, specifically one on dairy products. I don’t want to get on too much of a tangent with you. I want to introduce this to you slowly, so that you may consider doing the plant-based life yourself and having that discussion with your clients with a little bit of knowledge of what to be mindful of.
A plant-based diet is one that consists primarily of food from whole plants. This includes vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains.  There are many variants of the plant-based diet out there, including vegan, vegetarian, lactovegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, Mediterranean, and I’m sure many more.
 I am not trying to label specifically or get into those details, I am purely interested in giving you the overview of a solid plant-based nutritional program for your patients, that focuses on the vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains.
The Benefits:
High fiber intake is inevitable if done right. This will show benefits by decreasing inflammation, increasing bowel regularity, clearing a fatty liver and stifling insulin surges. The outcomes from this include lower glucose levels, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and weight loss. Fiber is also great for increasing satiety.
A well-rounded plant-based diet will increase general health and wellness with the increased intake of phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are best gotten from our food, rather than from supplemental forms. Phytonutrients are known to be powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents to help fight and prevent cancer, chronic illness and to boost the immune system. And I think we could all use a little immune boost right now.
 Wait! Did I mention weight loss? Did I mention that was one of the major benefits of adopting a plant-based diet?
A Few Considerations…
When one is doing a plant-based diet, they must still be very aware of what they are eating. You have to be sure to include certain nutrients that you may not get in abundance from all plant-based foods. Iron and B12 are two of the most commonly depleted nutrients on a plant-based diet. If you are aware of this, you can adjust your diet accordingly. Vitamin B 12 can be easily gotten with nutritional yeast, which has a distinct taste, referred to as cheesy. It can be sprinkled onto foods.  I like to put it on my spaghetti squash, topped with tomato sauce and then nutritional yeast. A few other sources of iron include cashews, kidney beans and black beans, as well as spinach. So again, a well-rounded plant-based lifestyle can still include these nutrients you need. One of the modules in the wellness and weight management course that I offer is dedicated to phytonutrients, micronutrients and essential elements we require for optimal functioning.
Now let’s talk about the interpretation of, or some misconceptions of, a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet is high in nutrients. It is high in a variety of food sources that come from plants. A true plant-based diet DOES NOT include French fries, pastries, pasta and other chemically processed foods or food like substances. I have seen many say that they are plant-based that still inhale everything but meat without regard and are still perplexed at how they could be gaining weight and not getting control over their chronic diseases and still feeling extremely fatigued. That is not the intention of a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet is meant to be filled with good wholesome vegetables, legumes, grains, fruits and unprocessed food sources. It Does not include cheese, which is very high in saturated fat and comes from animals. There are vegan cheeses that are made from cashews and nutritional yeast. I have tried some of those. Some better than others, but I just choose not to even go that route. I save the calories.
How to start the discussion with your patients��
When you start a discussion with your patients, you may get a lot of kickback. Especially if you’re in a place like me, where we were raised on Home cooking, with meat and potatoes required at every dinner. And with grandmas trying to make you fatten up a little bit. 
As a side note, I’m not sure how many of you have a grandmother like this, but when I was growing up, mine kept a can of lard under the kitchen sink that she cooked with! Looking back, I am not sure how I live through that experience. I ate fried eggs in it every morning that I stayed with her, and it was used for gravy making and soup making to add flavor.  I have to laugh about it now or I would probably vomit.  I’m not sure how she lived to be 83, but she did. My theory is that she was a hard-working woman that never sat down to rest much and had eight children to chase after. I can also still see her using a sickle to knock down weeds on an embankment in front of her house every summer. That would definitely burn off a few extra calories, decrease stress and maybe ward off ill effects from that can of lard.
Ok, back to discussing the plant-based life with your patients.
The plant-based discussion is one worth having with patients. If you start by asking what they typically eat in a day, to see where they are on the scale of carnivore, you’ll have a pretty good idea how much work will be involved with this discussion. Review the benefits of going plant based. If they have multiple comorbidities, or is they are chronically fatigued or trying to lose weight, they may be willing to implement the strategy.
If they have IBS symptoms or chronic constipation and you discuss with them that increasing their fiber through a plant-based diet May help to regulate their bowels, they may be more willing to implement the strategy.
If they have chronic pain or fibromyalgia, that cannot be attributed to anything diagnostically, they may be more willing to implement the strategy.
If you’re about to add another medication to them to better control their diabetes, cholesterol or blood pressure, they might be willing to implement the strategy.
If all else fails, have a discussion with them about sexual dysfunction.  It is well documented that sexual dysfunction, most commonly erectile dysfunction, may be attributed to early cardiovascular disease. The arteries in our body are not selective to the effects of atherosclerosis and buildup of lipid Plaques. All of the arteries are being clogged up with saturated fats that come from meat and animals-based products. Dr. Ornish has shown that this could be reversed with a plant-based diet. There have also been studies to show that there will be a significant improvement in erections and sexual function with the adoption of a plant-based diet. After this discussion, they may definitely be willing to implement the strategy.
I have many ways to get my point across to patients. Or, maybe I should say to help them get what they need and want in a persuasive and effective manner. Remember, when you speak to someone from THEIR viewpoint of health, you’ll get a whole lot further in your conversations. If you are speaking with a gentleman that is suffering from erectile dysfunction, whether that dysfunction be from medication side effects or from physiologic disease processes, they are willing to listen to you about how to restore and improve function.
So how do we start the implementation process?
I start with, “can you decrease your red meat to once per week?” then, I move into “can you decrease all animal-based consumption to three days per week?” And then I asked them to pay attention to how they feel on the days that they didn’t eat meat.
On the days that they are not eating meat, I have to prepare them for what to eat and how to modify their usual intake so that they aren’t hungry, and they feel like they aren’t being deprived.
There is a lot of flavor in a plant-based diet. There’s food to eat. You’re not being deprived to be on a plant-based diet. You can substitute many things for meat.
I find it best to give examples, so they know they are not going to struggle. I have already mentioned to you that I use spaghetti squash instead of pasta, nutritional yeast instead of Parmesan cheese. How about black bean tacos? Instead of hamburger chop up black beans or don’t chop them up, depending on preference, season them with taco seasoning, as you would hamburger, heat them up and top them with your usuals, minus the sour cream and cheese of course! But you can use salsa and jalapeños. Maybe spinach instead of iceberg lettuce to add to the nutritional value. I have done the same with burgers. Using black beans or kidney beans, chopped up, adding in seasoning, some ground flax for additional fiber and omega fatty acids, pat them into a burger shape, put them on the grill or fry them in olive oil or avocado oil. There are many many ways to make substitutions!

I would hate for my gesture of love to accidentally send her to the emergency vet. Sometimes it’s also nerve-racking when your dog jumps up on the counter and eats something the moment you turn your back.
It’s hard to know what’s good for them and what’s not.
When should you worry and when can you share your dinner?

Hard or Shredded Cheeses

Most of the dogs I’ve ever lived with have gone nuts for cheese.
It didn’t matter whether it was a slice of cheddar or a pile of shredded mozzarella, they’d eat it up without thinking to savor it.
Dogs can actually eat cheese in small quantities at a time.
Some dogs are lactose intolerant, but most will be able to have a bite or two of cheese and be totally fine.
Cheese contains healthy fats that are good for their health, along with calcium from the milk.
Coconut (Milk and Oil)
For centuries, people have used coconut extract as milk and an oil to help their health.
It has lauric acid in it, which makes it a great helper in fighting viruses and bacteria[1].
Dogs can have both forms in small quantities.
It’s most effective when used as an oil and rubbed onto dry, itchy, or irritated skin.
Dogs should never eat the shell of a coconut or have more than a few drops at a time.
The medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil within coconut oil can irritate the gut and cause symptoms such as diarrhea[2].
Eggs (Cooked)
Most households have cartons of eggs in them because they’re easy to use in so many different recipes.
You might fry them, scramble them, or boil them, which are all great for dogs.
Cooked eggs are a healthy source of natural protein that isn’t derived from meat, which can sometimes irritate dogs with sensitive food allergies.
Never let your dog eat raw eggs, as sometimes they can contain salmonella.

The only thing to look out for with fish is to make sure your dog never eats it uncooked or gnaw on fish bones.
Whole fish snacks and meals should also be limited to only one or two times a week because they’re so packed with nutrients.
Corn Kernels (Steamed, Boiled, or Popped)
You might enjoy corn steamed in the microwave or fresh on the cob.
It’s also one of the most common ingredients in human and dog food, so it’s fine for your dog to enjoy some the next time you grill out.
As long as the corn doesn’t have any seasonings or butter on it, your dog will love it.

The most popular method is that if you give your dog peanut butter regularly, they’ll die. The answer is much more complicated than this.
The reason why many dogs suffer from eating peanut butter is because they’re given a product that contains xylitol.
Xylitol has become a popular all-natural and sugar-free sweetener that mimics the same taste of sugar. Humans can eat it, but dogs can’t.
If dogs eat large amounts of xylitol, it results in liver failure and seizures, which leads to a quick death[6].

If you want to whip up some oatmeal for breakfast tomorrow, feel free to share it with your dog.
After you boil it in water, it’s a great source of soluble fiber.

Oatmeal is a natural whole-grain and will sort out any digestive or constipation problems your dog has.
Dogs with wheat allergies can also enjoy oatmeal in small amounts.

Doggy Benadryl

The recommended Benadryl dosage is 1 mg per one pound of body weight[13], up to two or three times per day.
Consult your vet before administering this treatment if your dog is already on prescription medication.
If the allergic symptoms make it hard for your dog to breathe, walk, eat, or drink water, it’s time to go to the emergency vet.
They may give the dog a shot of an antihistamine or other medications that are stronger and help immediately.

In fact, a fresh juice or smoothie is just about the healthiest thing you can do for yourself, your family, and your friends! So let’s be aware of these concerns, but keep a healthy perspective! Food Borne Illness
The CDC reports that produce is the leading cause of food poisoning in the US (although more hospitalizations are due to dairy products and more deaths are attributed to poultry). Produce with the greatest risk are melons (the rough skin traps bacteria and gets carried to the flesh when cut) and packaged pre-cut leafy greens.

A study published in the “Journal of Food Protection” found that washing apples with vinegar and water reduced bacteria significantly better than water alone. The premier food magazine, “Cook's Illustrated,” sponsored a similar experiment and found that vinegar killed approximately 98% of bacteria on the surface of fresh fruits and vegetables. But let’s put this in perspective I know folks who rarely rinse their produce and have never had a problem. I’m one of them! However, if you’re pregnant, or you're making juices or smoothies for your children – both have a greater risk of infection and illness - I’d surely rinse all produce. And every time I read something about the working conditions of huge farms that grow and harvest commercial foods, I start rinsing all my produce! Also, storing fresh juice makes it more vulnerable to bacteria so it’s best to drink it right away.
Toxic Substances
Some seeds, rind, and leaves of common fruits and vegetables should not be eaten! This will likely surprise you as much as it did me! The seeds of apples, peaches, apricots, cherries, and raspberries, as well as the leaves of carrots, rhubarb, parsnip, and Queen Anne’s Lace (wild carrot) contain toxic compounds, but the amounts are so minute as to be of no real concern.
The major compound is known as amygdalin which produces cyanide, but the amount is so small that your body easily neutralizes it. There are claims that amygdalin has positive uses including cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society reviews this claim in a thorough and balanced article, and for an alternative view click here. The bottom line is that you would have to eat handfuls of these seeds or pits AND DIGEST THEM to experience serious illness. The seeds and pits have a tough coating impervious to digestion by most mammals. Symptoms of amygdalin toxicity are severe stomach cramps, headache, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and seizures. However, if too many seeds were eaten and digested, one would likely vomit a few times and not develop any other symptoms. The rind of orange and grapefruit has a small amount of a toxic compound now used as an insecticide. Ingesting a small amount is absolutely safe for you and your pets, but several orange peels will definitely upset the stomach.
There is also mention of toxic substances in some sprouts. This is another one of those pieces of info that's interesting but of no real health concern. Canavanine is a toxic compound found in alfalfa seeds. However, as with the toxin in apple seeds, it is so minute as not to be an issue. An adult would have to consume 14,000 milligrams of canavanine at one time to feel any toxic effects. A large helping of alfalfa sprouts gives you a few milligrams. Digestive Issues
A while we’re on the subject of stomach upset, certain fruits and veggies are so powerful that you may experience some stomach distress if you drink too much of them. Too many leafy greens or wheatgrass can do this. For others, too much beet will do the same.
For those with sensitive digestion, mixing raw fruits and veggies can do this. I mix them every day with no ill effect. Standard nutritional rules state that in generally fruits and veggies should be eaten separately, though certain fruits go well with certain vegetables. In fact certain mixes are highly recommended for juice fasting and dieting, and for fighting diseases. The most common ‘ill effect’ of mixing fruits and veggies is gas, because fruit digests faster and uses different digestive enzymes. Carrots and apples are considered exceptions – carrots go well with any fruit and apples go well with any veggie.
Nutritional Deficiency
This is a concern only for those who limit themselves to juice or smoothies alone for long periods, especially if you’re pregnant, a young person still growing, and women in and past menopause. You can get all necessary nutrients from fruits and vegetables, but special attention needs to be paid to nutritional requirements during long juice fasts and diets. The nutrients which need special attention are iron, protein, calcium, B12, zinc, and Omega 3 fatty acids. These are critical nutrients that are difficult but not impossible to get from a vegetarian, vegan, or all-juice diet.
Medical and Dental Issues
Grapefruit juice is contraindicated if you take certain medications. Talk to your physician or pharmacist if this is a concern.
If you have any thyroid issues, compounds in raw cruciferous vegetables can interfere with your treatment. Again talk with your physician because thyroid and other health problems can be effectively improved with certain fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous veggies include kale, broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, turnips, arugula, Brussels sprouts, radishes, collard greens, kohlrabi, rutabaga, and watercress.
Another medical concern is diabetes. The old rule of thumb is that anyone who is diabetic should stay away from fruit and sweet veggies such as carrots, beets, etc. Recent research has overturned this with the discovery that many fruits and veggies have compounds that actually help regulate sugar levels better than cooked food. This is exciting news for diabetics so talk to your physician right away!
There is concern about the issue of fiber. Fresh juice separates 'pulp' from juice. The pulp is primarily insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber remains in the juice. Nonetheless, juice provides less fiber than the whole food unless one returns the pulp to the juice. For those who need more fiber in their diet, blended drinks (popularly known as 'smoothies') may be a better choice since they do not separate pulp from the juice. Pulp is also added calories so for weight loss, juice is a better choice.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation points out that compounds in dark leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.) can interfere with calcium absorption. They recommend that these rich foods be added to your juice recipes 2-3 times a week instead of every day.
Spinach is also high in oxalate, a compound that can lead to the formation of kidney stones. People with calcium oxalate kidney stones should avoid overdoing this veggie.
Don’t juice too many tomatoes or oranges if you have acid reflux since the high acid content can aggravate and even lead to acid reflux.
Finally, there is a greater risk of gum disease and tooth decay chiefly among children and teenagers whose diets are entirely vegetables and fruits (vegan and vegetarian) without proper attention to the nutrients mentioned above according to Dr. Ludwig Leibsohn of the Academy of General Dentistry. I've just added this sixth concern based on new information I've learned about sugar. And it's so shocking that when I rewrite this article, this concern will take over the top spot!
