Beginners problems in art

I am looking for courses to improve my drawings, I am browsing through books. One of the books I liked is pretty basic and it feels that it was written for the beginner, but by a person who is very proficient in the profession, so advice placed on the page are basically: “Draw that like me, put a shadow here, sketch everything you see, you got this”.

What would I appreciate more:

- How to frame the view around me, so sketch will be composed better. Cause it is a misconception that reality is composed well. Even when you are taking photos, you need to find a good shot and of course, you need to clean it a bit, erase some stuff from background.

- Some angles are more common in drawing than others, and it is not easy to get at first. If you really look on still lifes, for example vases are usually placed straight and you can’t see the inside of them, but coffee cups are quite often are drawn a little from top, so you can actually see the beverage inside.

- To find good references that push you forward, you need to collect a lot of them and systematize them to doable and undoable. Then you need to select a good proportion of different topics - shapes, light and shadows, work with color (how in eerie and dark images you need to distinguish between a lot of shades of gray, for example), anatomy, animals, plot and composition. I would be glad to have assistance in that process, and usually teachers provide that, they help you to develop a versatile overview of techniques and forms. When you are self-taught by books, you need to rely on your own background. I have some of that, but I can’t find a book that dives in into that. Honestly, most of them just go “Draw everything around you!”.

- “Just draw everything you want” is good when you are surrounded by art for a valid chunk of time. And it is not about museums. I did a lot of that, but you need to actually redraw these paintings to really understand them. And also, you need a lot more than that - you need to know the story behind, the techniques, the limitations of time. So you logically turn to modern artists, you try to find different approaches, you start searching for travelers, for less known artists, for photo reports from galleries, and then - then your mind really start giving you ideas. You can’t generate ideas out of plain air. You need to know it beforehand, to be familiar with it.

- The reason though why they insist to turn to your life is that from some level of skill, the main thing is your own vision. Vision is everything, your experience is unique and your sensing of world around is what every other artist wants to know about. You want to see your colleagues to share more that inner magic and inner self and therefore, this advice is a constant component of every guide. Funny, that in writing where I am not so focused on my skills, cause I am somewhere on intermediate stages, I really take inspiration from that advice and I am pretty sure that I said it a lot of time to a lot of beginners. :) When they just needed some help with literally descriptions or character introducing, I would be like “Be yourself!” >) Cause really, the technicalities will come in time, yes.

- How hard should it be? How much do I need to push myself? Should I get every drawing to perfection? Should I try to do complex works? Should I try to mix materials and approaches? Should I try to draw people everyday? No one can tell you that. You need to rely on your instincts. Or on study group. But it is confusing, I can tell. I want to draw everything - a fantasy about mouse family tucked in their beds, a serious sketch with dreamlike dark forest, a replica of portraits of one of the artists I love, I want to try the textures of shells, I want to draw the slices of fruit in watercolor, I want to fill in my sketchbook with doodles and comics, with citations from songs, with random sketch on the train. I want all of that and I am just sorry I can’t do it all simultaneously. I haven't found a book yet that encourages that passion.

V-Katsu - 3D Character Creator. Free on steam! Anime style, intensive character creator, by the same people who made Koikatsu, and Koikatsu Party, two amazingly detailed 3D hentai makers. If on sale, I also recommend snagging a copy of the Sims, particularly 3 or 4, for character creation and world design. Maybe not the best gameplay without mods, but it's also a load of fun, and very easy to add custom content to! Minecraft also. But you just need Minecraft, in general. Beyond its ability to fairly faithfully recreate structures from your paracosms, it's just Good.

Animation Done Easy

Our forefather's of internet animation used MS Paint, Windows Movie Maker, and Audacity. All of these, or their equivalents, are free on standard computers. I, personally, use FireAlpaca - which works just as well, if not better, than MS Paint for animation - but takes longer, and definitely lacks that retro feeling. I also use my trackpad to draw and animate everything, so its doable, but probably not totally comfortable, to animate like this for most people :)

365 Days of Art

       It started with Inktober, in 2017. I was enthusiastic because I could see the improvement in my art, in just 30 days. I worked as a digital artist for more than 10 years before, but this was just the beginning of my watercolor journey. I've been always too scared to begin. I felt the paper was too expensive for a beginner like me, I would ruin all my paintings and it would be a waste of money. I used to create watercolor effects in my digital vector artworks, just so that I could see some texture that would remind me of painting, but that was not real. And then one day I decided, I will pursue my passion for watercolor.

       I gave myself a year to learn, I took 2 short courses in January 2018, but because I was painting on a daily basis, I didn't feel the need to learn anymore. I felt like practice did its wonders. There were no rules, as long as I painted in watercolors, and because I didn't want to feel pressure, I decided I will paint whatever I want. I've been wanting to paint whatever I wanted for a long time, but working with clients was always a priority and I kept neglecting my passion for art. I was surprised of how this project became a part of my life, a new skill that made me excited. It was a real challenge, which means it was by no means easy. Sometimes I had no inspiration, or I didn't like the way the paintings turned out, but almost 99% times I kept the painting and uploaded it. This project was teaching me not just to paint, but to understand life better. I often caught myself feeling disappointed about the outcome of the whole project, because I had a bad day and I didn't like the painting I created. Or, I was enthusiastic and I thought all my paintings will be successful from that point, only because I had a great day painting. I always surprised myself, because when I thought I couldn't go on, I somehow did. This was a great lesson, isn't it the same in life? Whenever you get disappointed by a bad day, there's always a new blank page on the next day. The pressure of coming up with something new every day, helped me to dive deep into my soul and find things that I didn't even know were there. I've learnt so much about myself, I became aware of who I am, what my style is and how I communicate visually. I realised I love nature, animals and people, and I found my color palette as well.

       Though it didn't turn out the way I've planned, because I always set the bar too high, I started to have migraines and health problems, unfortunately. But I kept painting, just with a slower pace and took some days off when I needed. People started to recognise my new style and I have received many requests to work on amazing projects. Lot of things happened, but what is important now, is that in the present I am working as a full-time illustrator for an awesome company. While this experience and all the work I've invested in my career helped me to get where I am today, the project still goes on, but only when I have the time for it.

       The 365 days of art project is the best thing that happened in my life. I could write a whole book about it, there's so much more to share, but maybe some other time.

Hey Rox, random question. How can one learn to draw? I mean, I got the whole take a pencil and a paper and practice everyday but I mean, after doing that you understand proportions, light, perspective? Naturally? Just by practicing everyday?

Artists telling people just to practice art and not giving them any solid starting place is a bullshit cop-out and something I’ve probably said at some point, but I’m going to rectify it now by giving you a comprehensive guide to starting art.

Some people may disagree with me (and honestly I recommend asking other artists this same question to see what they say and what you yourself agree with), but I think no matter what kind of 2D art you want to make, you should start with traditional, realistic drawing or painting. The reason for this (aside from anecdotal evidence of it working for me) is that learning to draw things that occur in real life gives you a foundation for branching out into different styles or media down the line. Even if you want to draw cartoons or anime, learning realistic drawing will help you, because it will familiarize you with the complicated shapes that more cartoony drawings simplify or exaggerate. For example, if you learn to draw a realistic nose, then you can see different ways to turn that realistic shape into a simplified version of itself. Practicing realistic art can also help train your eye and get you accustomed to different techniques such as line quality, shading, color theory, composition, and various types of art materials, or media, as I will probably begin referring to it as.

So, the next step is to figure out how the hell to start learning to draw realistic stuff. I will help, using written descriptions, tips, and videos I have found online to help you.

First off is Materials/Media.

You can make art with practically anything. Anything from the humble paper and pencil to the most expensive and high-end art supplies. You can burn a piece of wood in a fire for a bit and then use the charred end to make marks with. You can use mud to paint with. You can dip your toe in ink and use that as a paintbrush. My point is that you can really get creative with it and I think creating art should be a joyful experience, not a painful one.

Art supplies can be very expensive, so for beginners I really do recommend a paper and pencil. Not a mechanical pencil either, but one of those wooden ones. They work well for drawing because you can use both the point and the side of the lead to make marks with. I also recommend getting a good eraser. My favorite kind are the grey kneadable ones, because you can squish them into any shape you need for any particular area that needs erasing. I’ll link to some on Amazon later on.

You can practice pencil drawings on lined paper (I have a whole lot of sketches I did in high school that are just on lined paper), printer paper, cardboard, etc, or you could invest in a sketchbook. Cheap sketchbooks are pretty easy to find, like they have them at my local grocery store, but you can also find them online for fairly cheap. Sketchbooks are made of different paper depending on the media (drawing materials) that you’re using. Paper intended for pencil drawings tends to have quite a fine grain for smooth blending, whereas paper in watercolor sketchbooks is rough and absorbent to suit the wet medium. You can get a sketchbook with any paper you want, really. I’ve done pencil drawings on pastel paper before, because it was the only paper around, and it still looked nice, just different than it would on finer grain paper. What materials you choose to use depends on the look you’re going for, and you’ll figure that out more with experience.

To start with, just grab some paper and a pencil and start making marks on it. See how many different looking marks you can make on the paper. I’m not really talking about shapes persay, but literal marks with the pencil. Thin lines, thick lines, scribbles with lots of pressure or just a little bit of pressure. Scrape the side of the pencil along the paper and see what it does. Try blending the lines with your finger. Just take some time to play with the material without getting hung up on creating anything. Do this sort of experimenting with any new art material you’re introduced to. The first thing you should do with a new tool is acquaint yourself with it, and that’s what this is doing. Get used to how the pencil feels in your hand and what motions feel comfortable with it. Keep in mind that you don’t have to hold the pencil the same way as if you were writing. Often if I’m shading with a pencil, I will hold it with all of my fingers around it and use my thumb to put pressure on it.

Now, shading.

Shading and mark making go together, because shading is basically using the marks you’re making with your pencil or pen to indicate lightness vs. darkness. To practice mark making and the techniques that are used for shading, I recommend watching this video and drawing along with the exercise. The artist uses pens in it but you can do it with pencil too! 

When you’re ready, you can start trying to shade basic forms (shapes). Shading gives a two dimensional shape a three-dimensional look. It turns a flat circle into a sphere. Once you learn how to shade basic shapes, you can pretty much figure out how to shade just about anything. For example, once you learn how to shade a sphere, you know how to roughly shade a head! And what is an arm if not a cylinder? A nose if not a pyramid?

There are lots of videos online for practicing this. Here’s one that’s pretty good.

This is where I recommend starting. Once you are more comfortable with that, here is a list of things that you can look up and try to get a handle on, in what I think is a pretty alright order.

Perspective (one-point, two-point, three-point)

Value, Tint, Shade

Drawing negative space

Foreshortening

Composition

Drawing from life

Color theory

It would take me a very long time to outline all of this stuff, which is why I’ve given you that list of stuff to look for online. There are a lot of great resources out there and I recommend searching for them and comparing them. I can’t go into depth on everything right now because there’s a LOT of stuff, but I hope the little outline I gave you will help give you a foundation and know where to look and what to look for! Top Oil Painting Tips and Tricks for Beginners

Oil paints have been a staple choice of artists for hundreds of years and still continue to be a popular medium among painters, worldwide. It’s one of the most relied upon mediums of painting for centuries and some great art works have been made using oil paints like Mona Lisa, The Starry Night, The Kiss and The Night Watch to name a few. Staring out from the OG of painting mediums is the best way to go forward but if you’re making a transition from another medium like acrylics or watercolors then be generous to yourself, give time and room for experimenting as it will certainly be a steep learning curve but a very rewarding one. To make things easy for you, venture from animals paint by numbers, as they’re easy to follow, allow control, color palette is selected and the end result is so satisfying, boosting your confidence to take a leap.

Oil paints have their own set of rules which must be strictly abided by as they can make all the difference in your painting. Oil paints have a long drying time which requires a lot of patience and perseverance. This is a pro and a con of oil painting, but it depends on the painter’s perspective. The layering effect of wet-on-wet and wet-on dry is something that’s up to the painter's will but both of the techniques have amazing effects on the painting. Although oil paints allow a lot more control, are easy to use, have an incredible color pay off, have a diverse range of colors and the quality is supreme, than any other medium, we can’t take away the fact that oil paints are toxic solvents.

To all the bright-eyed rookie artists out there who want to embark their oil paint journey must work their way up with endurance. Keep your expectations to a bare minimum in starting and allow yourself to experiment, make mistakes and learn from them. Try alleviating yourself from the pressure of performance, familiarize with the medium and enjoy the process. Painting kit for adults are a great starting point and a sure short way to gain confidence with oil paints. Amateur artists feel overwhelmed by the language of oil paints, their application and ramifications but once you get a hang of it all turns into a sweet melody. Things like homemade gesso, linen vs canvas, finer points of pigments and brush talk can be confusing at first, so here we are to make things easy and more understandable for anyone starting out with this most entrusted medium in the world of painting.

Invest Slowly

Oil paints demand your money, dedication, resilience, tolerance and most of all time. Novice artists mustn’t plunge straight into a life size painting, putting too much at stake and end up messing everything or giving up oils altogether. Start out with a small painting, testing with techniques without investing too much time or supplies. Tread slowly, gain experience from the process and then venture in big paintings. Animal paint by numbers provides the perfect opportunity for learning in the most secure way. Buy 8x10” canvas or canvas boards and just paint to familiarize yourself with the medium.

Paint is a Well-Ventilated Room

Due to the toxic fumes released by the oil paints, painters must work in a ventilated room to avoid itchiness in eyes, ringing in ears and severe headaches. A well-lit room is also very important as the light (preferably natural) will help to see the colors in their truest form, you will be able to feel more energized, inspired and inclined to work more often. A special room for painting makes things easier for you, the supplies are set, the canvas ready and the energy is positive. These are all the ingredients for a master painting.

Keep your Foundation Game Strong

This is a key step that you’re supposed to do at the beginning of your painting but the result of this effort will reflect on the end of your painting. There’s no limitation of the surface you want to paint on but you must prime it with a material called gesso. This base coat prevents the oil paints from seeping into the surface, protects the surface from the harmful chemicals of the paints and provides a base that allows the paints to adhere to it for maximum color pay off.

Learn the Language of Colors

Colors play a huge part in making or breaking any painting. There’re many rules that apply to colors, that make them appear livelier on canvas or they seem lifeless and dull. Firstly don’t mix more than two colors and white, don’t over mix them to the point where they tend to lose their individuality and don’t skimp on paints. If you wish to achieve a vivid and vibrant effect then skimping on color will ruin that so make sure to apply the correct amount. Paint by numbers sets provide the perfect quantity of paints which are enough for the set and nothing goes to the waste.

Go with the Correct Order of Paint

The order of paint in an oil painting is absolutely vital if you want the desired effects and not a prolonged painting time. Always paint fat over lean, thick over thin and slow drying over fast drying. What I mean is that start with a thin layer of paint and a low content of oil, so that it dries quickly and your painting doesn’t crack up. Build up with thicker layers of paints with higher oil content.

Clean the Brushes, But Not With Water!

Everyone knows that oil and water repel each other so you can’t clean your dirty brushes with water. It’s important to clean your brushes when switching between colors and it can be messy. Keep rags, turpentine, paper towels handy to wipe your brushes for the best results, no one wants traces of previous colors ruining the new color.

Palette Knife is your Friend

Don’t underestimate this tool, it’s not only for mixing paints, it can be very useful in creating interesting and intriguing strokes. The effects that come with this tool are simply amazing so do try to make use of this tool in your endeavors.  

Conclusion

Painting is an ever learning process and oil paints are the best medium to work with. Oil paints need to be respected and accepted with their limitations. Once you know them there will be no stopping you from making some master strokes of painting.

My aim when I complain about certain mediums or "waaah art is hard" isn't to discourage people from trying trying art as a recreational thing bc who cares if it's good in that case, art should absolutely be free to anyone to make regardless of skill and that's a beautiful thing.

My aim is to point out the difficulty and unseen repetitive trial and error that often goes into making decent art. So in the event you do pick up watercolors or pen and ink or attempt to animate something you understand you're not going to be good at it right away and maybe not even after doing it for Years and that's ok and normal and probably even necessary. even people who draw and paint every day still have to struggle when they learn things, art isn't just birthed into the world by talented people bc talent takes practice and practice means making a lot of shitty/mediocre content which is often frustrating and discouraging bc nobody's gonna praise you for that. Not until you have something decent to show for it.

the way society treats art is as though even professionals are just sitting around having fun every day and there's not this huge pressure on them to improve or become faster to keep up with the industry, which is increasingly cutthroat and difficult in the current economy. A lot of people think they can just pick up a brush and do decent art and make money off of it, bc they think art is easy. when I've met very few artists who have what I would consider "natural" talent that doesn't require discipline or constant practice to improve or maintain. I was considered "naturally talented" as a kid and the thing is, if you let it go to your head that mentality catches up with you and becomes toxic to your improvement. Being the best artist in your class in elementary school is a lot easier than being the best artist in your class at high school is a lot easier than being the best artist in your class at art college. And if you want to do art professionally vs recreationally all of this is important to understand. Art can be frustrating, difficult and discouraging sometimes, and that's something people will rarely tell beginner artists. Professionals don't link you to their 500 poorly drawn deviantart OCs from 15 years ago. They show you their best content only. It creates the illusion that art is created instantly and without struggle and hard work. I want to kill that mentality so I'm honest about how much I struggle. Those 500 shitty drawings you do are absolutely necessary to completing a single good one 5 years down the line. But nobody will make this connection bc you probably won't want to show them to anyone once you get to the point of consistently creating decent work. And if that sounds frustrating it's cause it is. Art is frustrating. If you want to enjoy doing art, it's not recommended you pursue doing it professionally, bc the self critical mentality required to improve can destroy your ability to just relax and create freely.

Introduce yourself Hello hello! My name is Colors, i'm a Colombian collage student studying animation in the US. I live for art and have multiple skills in digital and traditional mediums and my favorite thing to draw is monsters and comedy with of dumb fictional characters. When did you start drawing? Are you a digital or traditional artist? I used to watch a lot of Disney movies when i was a tiny child and i always wanted to have toys of the characters to play with, but because i couldn't have them, i would draw and make paper cutouts of them to play with instead lol

Do you use any traditional mediums? If so, which are your favorites? Though I'm mostly a digital artist these days, I know and enjoy a lot of traditional mediums. I can do pencil, colors pencils, inks, watercolor, and acrylics. Sculpting with polymer clay is also fun! Why do you prefer traditional over digital? (or viceversa) One of the reasons I tend to use more digital over traditional these days is because it's much more convenient and easy to do something on the go. For paints you gotta get out a whole set up and then cleaning up, and my pens and markers need to be replaced every now and then. As a busy collage student I can get more things done nicely in digital. What do you think is the most challenging part about being a traditional/digital artist? Composition. Both in digital and traditional. I know I can do nice composition, but sometimes i start drawing characters without thinking about and forget about their placement on the canvas or paper and when im done i either can change it or have to toy with it in digital for a while to get it to look okay. What inspires your pieces? moslty  doing fanart! Some characters I like tend to have really wild personalities that inspire me to create funny comics or images of them just doing something wild.

From then its all abut sketching it out to get a good idea of the poses i want Do you have an artist you admire (or more than one)?

So many! Though i really have to mention @Psshaw on twitter because of her really dynamic and over the top expressions of her characters. Another I love is @Apselene, her style and character design is just amazing, and you absolutely gotta check out her youtube channel for the animations she makes!! There's a lot of amazing artists out there, I could stay here all day talking about it.... Is there an artwork you are most proud of? Why? My recent piece for last Homestuck 4/13! Most of my art recently is made in rush in between classes and homework, so i don't get to do super elaborate pieces like that too often.

Do you listen to music (or tv shows/films/anything else) when drawing? Always music! I gotta have something playing or i can't work right, which is unfortunate because I have a hearing problem for which i can't use headphones. Usually i just put on youtube and let it take me wherever, recently i've been listening to a lot of Glass Animals, Black Mambo, Exxus, and Life Itself are my faves.

Almost every stage of art really, I find most of the creating process to be fun, and recently I've noticed getting really focused in creating something makes calms me down when I've had a bad day. But the end result and sharing it is also super fun, especially since I make a lot of comedy, i love to see people react to and enjoy what i put effort into. What do you do when art block strikes? I don't get art blocks often, but sometimes what happens instead is i have to many ideas and end up doing nothing all day instead. But that is alright, I have to constantly remind myself that sometimes i have to take a rest and that it is okay to not be working 24/7. What’s the most valuable art advice you’ve ever received?

Don't focus too much in things being perfect! A lot of beginner artists are very concerned with making their pieces perfect on the first go but you gotta let them go. Looks at the mistakes you made that you didn't like and move on to the next one!
