Do you have any thoughts on how Pokemon NPC dialogue has evolved over the generations? Are there any in particular you've found that surprised you?
Hmm....Good question.
I mainly view it from the perspective of how easy it is to find dialogue that fits well on this blog...
Gen 1 probably has the least amount of quirky/fun npc dialogue, with the following games getting more and more fun NPCs.
I personally feel like the dialogue really hit its stride in gen 5-6. And the Team Aqua/Magma/Galactic grunts - for instance - were often great in gen 3-4.
Then there's gen 7...there are a lot of really kooky NPCs in Alola...but for some reason they quite often give me this almost unsettling feeling. And at least sometimes it feel like it is unsettling on purpose. There's also the fact that there were a lot of long scenes with NPCs in those games, which mostly is a hassle for the sake of this blog lol (longer cutscenes with smiling and unblinking characters may be a reason that I feel unsettled now that I think about it). The lengthy scenes is an issue of mine with Pokémon Legends: Arceus for the same reason. I guess it is kind of nice to get these mini-stories, though.
Gen 8-9 have been fine. I'm kind of glad that they've reigned in the long cutscenes. I do feel like gen 9 has had a bit too many NPCs that mainly are used for exposition (like telling you about a game feature or commenting on a nearby landmark), much like the early gens. And I feel like the various grunts have had less fun dialogue in gen 8-9 too.
As for something that has surprised me...well, I've been playing/replaying various Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games recently, and they have quite a lot of fun/charming dialogue. Often in the shape of short comments that throughout the game(s) create a narrative.
Maybe even more surprising is that there sometimes are gems from the Detective Pikachu games too...though almost exclusively from the pokémon rather than the trainers in those ones.
And of course, I have to mention that the trainer dialogue from various battle facilities in most games are generally top tier!
What are your thoughts?

Ranking Every James I Own
Lego Duplo James:
12/10! MY FAVORITE JAMES! He's cute! He's chonky! He's easily portable! I can push him on a track or without! And he can sit next to my laptop politely as a little desk buddy! Plus, he's got side rods! Adorable and versatile! What more could you want from a little engine?
Easy S-Tier James.
Also! Since he's so big, he can fit doll sunglasses. Which allows me to do silly goofy things with him like this.
Trackmaster Motorized James:
10/10! A solid James!
I'm not sure what year or model he is, but I've had him since childhood (along with Lego Duplo James and Take-Along James). And now, over a decade later, he still works like a charm (albeit, after some cleaning and tinkering). He's not the fastest of my motorized trains, but he is my favorite (duh). I would like to add that he is the fastest of my battery-powered Jameses, so he gets an extra point for that. I love watching him run and carry things. And his gentle wirring noise is quite comforting.
Magnet Take-Along James:
6/10. The Mid-est James. :/
Don't get me wrong! I still love him very much. But against the other James's, he doesn't quite measure up. And the whole point of this post is to pick favorites (and also to show off all my Jameses *cough cough*).
There's nothing wrong with him at all. But just compared to the other James's he's a little basic. I do appreciate the details in his cab though! That's a nice touch!
My favorite thing to do with him is to attach him to the Aquarium train. It's the coolest rolling stock I have, and it makes him feel special.
Battery Powered Wooden Railway(?) James:
9/10! A very cool and interesting James indeed!
This James was a gift from a good irl friend of mine, and is the second new engine I've gotten after getting back into Thomas as an adult! He's a bit strange (/positive) in the sense that I'm not quite sure what line he's supposed to be a part of. I'm guessing Wooden Railway because the style of his wheels looks identical to my other Wooden Railway engines, and also because his tender is made of wood. But truth be told, I don't know for sure.
He starts running by pushing a button (I like pushing buttons). And he has a little light! That's so neat! Another cool thing about him is that he's able to run on my old Trackmaster tracks! So I can watch him go alongside all the others!
The one thing that makes him lose a point is that he's very slow (the slowest of my battery-powered Jameses). But I suppose that can't be helped because he is quite old. But whatever the case, I think he's a very neat James.
AEG Splash Tank Motorized James:
7/10. He gets points for being cute and chonky. The wave details on his paintwork are beautiful and that's why I got him (I can practically feel James preening himself at that comment). However, he loses points for being slow and frequently getting stuck on the tracks 😔 (I know he probably needs his own AEG tracks but shhh.....)
AEG Push-Along James:
10/10! I LOVE HIM! HE'S MY BABY!
He's adorable and small! A real pocket-sized James (and I've checked! He really can fit in my pocket!)! Also his face is just adorable! Very squishy looking!
Now I can already hear you saying, "Randy! The take-along James is also smol! Why is the AEG James ranked higher?" Well, it's for 1 reason: the hooks. To me, the hook feels more stable than the magnet, so I can carry AEG James around in my hand or my pocket without worrying about his tender falling off.
But most importantly, the hooks allow me to do my favorite activity: hooking up my AEG James to my AEG Edward and letting them puff around my house together.
LOOK AT THEM! LOOK AT THEM BEING HUSBANDS! Edward puffs in the front, and James is his back engine, just like many of their HIT-era episodes together. AEG Push-Along engines letting me live out my 2x5 fantasies fr ❤💙

Loom Of Fate
After many years, The Coliseum offered a golden opportunity to a select few gladiators to change their fate and fulfill their wildest dreams. But there was a catch - they had to prove their unwavering determination by risking it all, even their lives. Just how far would they go to claim their desires?
Hello~ mod klai is here! Just wanted to make an essence that kinda inspired by my own non-fandom world with a bit of twisted here and there~ the rules are simple, first come first served and it would be best if the characters are adults, also do not worry about gender rules here you can slap any character despite their gender in any role you like
[S-Tier] Fateful Champion // ????
Just who would make it to the finals and claim the title of the champion for themselves? That is a question that shall be answered in the near future
//This role isn’t available, it shall be selected randomly from the other options below
[A-Tier] Undefeated Champion // Gabriel Willson
The current champion is the adopted son of The Fleur De Lis House. He is said to be one of the greatest swordsmen of his generation, and his blade never fails to achieve victory and justice. Those who have made it to the finals either immediately lost to him or surrendered. Will that change in this tournament?
//This character is the personal bodyguard to The Host
[A-Tier] The Host // Adam (@/vanharterestoration)
The host is a mysterious character, all you need to know is they are an important figure and the one who organises the entire tournament and acts as the judge. Their words are final, and under their watchful eyes, they ensure that the tournament is free from injustice, bias or disasters.
// this character has connections to The Undefeated Champion as his bodyguard.
[A-Tier] former Honour // Logan (@/idv-ask-the-horatiusfamily)
A young Noble who seek to restore and clean their Family’s name and honour that has long been denied by a false accusations of a crime that they didn’t even commit. The young noble is more than willing to take any drastic measures to achieve such goal even if it means risking their life in this tournament
// this character has connections with the Mysterious Guest
[A-Tier] Azure Waves // Macabre (@/idv-news-boi)
A battle-thirsty fighter who simply seeking new ways to satisfy their needs for fights and bloodshed above land rather just under the sea. Unlike any of the other participants, this one doesn’t seek the glory of victory, all they wants is too feel the thrill of battle and put their life on the line against powerful people.
//this character is has connections with Lady Red and also he is a shark themed merman
[A-Tier] Truth Seeker // Melati (@/askthemanorresidents)
A powerful mage, rumored to have practiced forbidden magic, joined the tournament with one goal in mind and that is to uncover a long forgotten truth from the past, and they would do anything to obtain it despite the potential consequences.
[B-Tier] Blind Greed // Shiloh (@/idv-thespians)
Wealth, fame, and recognition? Who wouldn’t want that!? For someone who has lived their whole life in poverty, a chance to live an easy, luxurious life is something they wouldn’t let slip away, even if it means putting their life on the line for it. They would do anything to achieve what their heart truly desires.
[B-Tier] Lady Red // Angeline (@/askthepianist)
An elegant and beautiful guest from the red light district who wields a strong influence on society had graced this year's tournament with their presence. Numerous shady rumors swirl around this charming guest... but who are they really?
// This Character has connection with Azure Wave
[B-Tier] Past Glory // Xiao (@/vigilant-yaksha-idv)
The ex-champion of the arena who held the title for a very long time. They had to keep fighting until they are defeated at least once because of a contract, but no one managed to beat them for many years…. They started to think that nobody would ever defeat them and that they were doomed to keep fighting forever. Eventually, their wish had been granted when they faced The Undefeated Champion, who defeated them fair and square. They finally felt relieved as their contract had ended. They retired from being a gladiator soon after and now they train young gladiators.
[B-Tier] Mysterious Guest // Shadow Man (@/manor-tea-time)
After finding out this year's new participants, this mysterious guest couldn't help but become intrigued by those who stop at nothing to achieve their pathetic goals…. Just how far are they willing to go? It would be thrilling to put them to the test!
//This character has a connection to Former honour and Undercover
[B-Tier] Undercover // Angel (@/picnicbask3t)
After finding out that the Mysterious Guest is also planning to watch the tournament, they couldn't sit idly by. They are aware that the Mysterious Guest might manipulate and twist the tournament for their own entertainment and they couldn't allow a disaster to befall on anyone!… not again…
// this character has connection to Mysterious Guest

Hi! Do you have any comforting book/movie recs? Maybe with a sweet love story or friendship?
ABSOLUTELY I do!!
Books
Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn. This is a really charming romance about Meg, who does custom calligraphy, including wedding invitations, like the invites she did for Reid Sutherland a year ago. But now he's back, having spotted a hidden message she wove into his invitations warning him that his marriage was doomed. He wants to know how she knew, but Meg's got her own problems - but despite herself she feels a connection with Reid that's only growing deeper . . .
Everything Eva Ibbotson has ever written, especially her historical romances. My personal favourite is The Secret Countess, set in 1919, in which Anna, a Russian Countess, after fleeing from the Bolsheviks, takes a job as a maid in a young English Earl's household.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows - told in letters and the inspiration for the film, it's quite different from the movie in some respects but is just warm, gentle and a really cosy read.
Crosstalk by Connie Willis - this is a romcom with a slight sci-fi vibe; in the not too distance future Briddey Flannigan gets an implant to allow telepathic communication with her boyfriend so they can have a more open relationship, but instead finds herself connected to someone else entirely . . .
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell - this is such a gentle romance, set in the 90s, Lincoln works for a paper in their IT department and has been assigned to check emails that get flagged by their new system. One particular coworker, Beth, keeps getting her emails flagged and as he reads them, he finds himself falling in love with her . . . the only problem is he's never actually met her.
Anne of Green Gables (and sequels) by L. M. Montgomery - a true classic, that is just so joyful to read, and the love story between Anne and Gilbert is one of my very favourites.
The Boy trilogy by Meg Cabot - these are three of Meg Cabot's adult books, all loosely connected but they can be read as standlones, and are just fun, easy reads with nice romances that are really feel good.
Movies
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - since I've plugged the book let's also plug the movie. It's gentle, it's warm, it's comforting, it's lovely and it's two hours of Michiel Huisman being charming.
The Shop Around the Corner - the original that inspired You've Got Mail, with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It's lower stakes that YGM but still fun, romantic and really feel good.
When In Rome - this film is ridiculous but I love it, a romcom with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel where she takes coins out of a fountain in Rome causing four men to fall hopelessly in love with her.
The Longest Ride - this is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel and one of my comfort films. There's two love stories, one in the present day and one historical being told to the heroine by Alan Alda, and they're both really sweet.
Your Name - an anime film, I watched this a few years ago and it instantly became one of my all time favourites. It's so beautifully animated, and the romance in it is top tier.
When Fools Rush In - Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek have a one night stand in Las Vegas, but when she gets pregnant he proposes marriage on a whim and they try to build a life together. A stellar romcom and Matthew Perry said it was his favourite of all his films.
Belle (2013) - absolute peak period drama romance, and a truly underrated gem of a film.
Take the Lead - inspired by a true story, Antonia Banderas stars as a ballroom dancer who teaches a class of inner-city kids to dance. Beautiful, charming, romantic.
The Jane Austen Book Club - a group of women form a book club to read all the Jane Austen books, and find they help with their own problems. Lots of friendship and a bit of romance on the side.
And since it is December some special Christmas comfort movie plugs . . .
While You Were Sleeping - Sandra Bullock saves a man from an oncoming train, but gets mistaken by his family for his financee and then starts falling for his brother. A+++ rom com.
Christmas in Boston - two penpals finally agree to meet after writing for 13 years. The catch? They both sent each other pictures of their best friends and pretended it was them.
Dash & Lily - a series rather than a movie but super cute. Lily leaves a notebook with some challenges in a bookstore, Dash finds it and does them, and leaves her some of his own in return, and thus an unlikely friendship is born.
Midnight at the Magnolia - radio hosts and childhood friends Maggie and Jack fake being a couple to drive up the ratings on their show.
Miracle on 34th Street - both the original 1940s version and the 90s remark are great, in which a lawyer and a little girl have to prove that a man claiming to be Santa is the real thing when he's put on trial.
The 12 Dates of Christmas - woman set up on a blind date on Christmas Eve has to relive the night over and over until she gets it right.
I hope those will do you for a while and that you enjoy them!!! Shout if you need any more :)

Okay so I’m playing Story of Seasons right now and I love these games so I have to merge and make all the yanderes farming sim!bachelors and bachelorettes:
Desmond: He’s that bachelor that isn’t in town right away, and comes in a later month after working a case and is so aloof and suspicious of you and why you suddenly care about whatever dead relatives farm now. His friendship/love points fill up so slowly, you never know where the fuck he is to give him daily gifts and his first few scenes just seem mean but you can’t help but pursue him. His loved gifts are probably like coffee, S tier milk, and some hard as fuck recipe to make. He’s that guy who doesn’t have his own home and lives in the inn like a sad fuck. After you’re married he helps with feeding the animals.
Zara: She’s the out of towner, she didn’t grow up here but came out for some bizarre forced reason like “you can only get the best dyes with local ingredients!” and runs the tailors shop for you to buy outfits. She’s a bit high and mighty at first, and you’re romance involves making her fall in love with your small farming town. Likes expensive gifts like diamonds or dyed linens you made. I think she would help, but I don’t know what task she would do. Lives above her shop in a luxe modern style room.
Cliff: As I am writing this I am 100% certain my main inspiration for Cliff was Calvin from Animal Parade, because holy hell what a charismatic man who just oozes “lemme treat you princess” vibes. He’s the character who lives in the big house up the hill that’s nicer than everyone’s and his jovial when you first meet him. All his scenes with the other townsfolk are either “he’s so handsome and dreamy, I wonder if he’s single??” OR “I got stuck listening to him talk about is latest lecture please save me farmer”. Easy to befriend, he likes processed gifts like cheese, butter, and other things that require you to spend tons of time and money to unlock. Doesn’t help with anything but does buy you random items.
Ezra: I MEAN OBVIOUSLY THE TOWN BAKER/COOK! He’s the towns pride and joy, his parents never appreciated him or the town and moved away when he was a teen, but he came back and opened up a place, which everyone loves! He’s that sweet bachelor who also seems into you before you even get him to 1 heart, and he is always happy to see you! Lives in a back room of his cafe. Loved gifts involved anything cooked, or any quality ingredients, he’s probably the easiest to romance! Will cook you meals every day when you’re married. For some reason his “Do you want to have a baby” cutscene comes before anyone else....
Olive: She reminds me of Popuri from Friends of Mineral Town! She’s probably works at the registers at the ranch where you buy animals (she thinks they are cute but ew...dirty!), charmed by big city folks like Zara and talks about true love and adventure. She’s that wholesome girl next door romance where you sweep her off her feet and convince her to stay on a farm, but she does have a bit of a controlling streak insisting on dresses the cows up and “marketing” for the ranch. She lives at the ranch, I imagine the ranch owners are family friends who let her stay with them while she works. She probably loves made items like jewelry or desserts! She’ll also give you random items after marriage!
Margo: Mix Flora from A Wonderful life and Candace from Animal Parade and I imagine that would be a good Margo. She’s that awkward townsfolk who works the night shift at the local clinic, helping out with basic treatments while studying and doing her medical research. It’s so hard to build up her points as well, because you have to stay up late just to see her. She lives in a spare room at the clinic that is small but filled with specimen and papers. The towns doctor lives in another room and constantly asks you to watch over Margo. She’s awkward and barely speaks to you, but if you gift her weird stuff you find in the forest she gets excited. She forages random items to help out!
Sawyer: I honestly couldn’t think of how we could incorporate a gang member into Harvest Moon/SOS sooo...but then it hit me...his grandmom and dad! Maybe in this game, they adopted him and brought him to this peaceful town to give him a different life. I bet they run the general store, and when you first meet them they gush about “their sweet boy Sawyer whose so kind, he’s getting product from the big city but he’ll be here soon!” and you meet him and he looks like a punk, but he’s cheery and laughing and his scenes all involve him taking care of his grandmom and dad. He loves gifts that are weird, and when you’re married he takes care of the chickens (although he’s kind of a wild mess chasing after them)
Antonio: He’s the kind bratty bachelor, who lives with his dad in the big house and constantly talks about “getting away and truly living as an artist”...but he obviously loves this town and the people. He probably works part time at the carpenters as the designer options, as he paints the furniture options you have. He reveals in one romance scene that he started it when he was a kid to spite his dad and say he doesn’t need him, but secretly he kinda hates it and wishes he could just paint! Loves gifts that are pretty, likes flowers or linen or something, and his spouse task is he’ll gather wood or rock.
Mizu: He’s that weird fucking townsperson who shows up later as well because he didn’t realize there was a new person in town and he has just been a hermit for the first few months. Another character who doesn’t make a ton of sense being here, but he reveals he grew up here and found out he hated the big city and all the noise so he moved back for the quiet. He doesn’t have a job in town, and it takes a bit to raise his friendship enough to enter his home where he spends 90% of his time. I imagine he also has a room at the inn, but you aren’t able to go in it at all. All the townspeople whisper that they wish he’d come out more, but he is a bit rude at times....always stands in the back and alone at festivals. Likes gifts that aren’t nature related, and loves high quality eggs. He also doesn’t help much around the farm.

January 2024 Wrapup
One month down! 2024’s going to be easy, you’re going to see! We made it this far, we just have to do this again and I’m sure we’ll find a way. This month has seen a Games Done Quick event, a bunch of videos, five story piles!
Let’s get into it, looking at what you might have already seen and what you might have missed if you’re at all a fan of Things Talen makes!
This month’s Game Pile were:
Exploding Kittens, where I opine about an interface mistake in a game that’s pretty much entirely about revelling in its interface, right?
A Patreon and Channel trailer update, where I made a pair of videos for that
Puzzmo, a game that I have already stopped playing because it fails to localise to non-American spellings
A video form of my Gene Wars article, which adds some details and context about this aggressively tedious game that’s remarkably hard to play, even without Dosbox overcycling and making things die of old age
It also is the first month where, in the off weeks, Fox and I have been playing a game together – in this case, we played through Space Quest III, completing the trilogy. There are, after all, never any other Space Quest games, and you can go check those out over on Youtube (part 1, part 2).
While Story Pile articles covered:
The Sopranos, a TV series that took a lot of time to watch and was worth it and I immediately stopped caring about once I was done watching it,
Godzilla vs Megalon, a charming hokey 70s piece of kids’ action entertainment
Appare-Ranman!!, an anime about going fast that fails when it comes to races
The Traitor Baru Cormorant, a dense book about economics where some betrayal happens,
Afterschool Dice Club, an anime about board games, no really, actually about board games.
But that’s not all I wrote about this month that you can read, with your eyes! I wrote about how much I missed having the physical ritual of a bullet journal. You know, for the nine days I didn’t have it, which is weird because it’s not like I was doing detailed journalling at the end of December.
I wrote about the Speed stat in Pokemon games, and how it currently works. This article actually started as an introduction to the competitive idea of ‘speed tiers’ and how things could be generally positioned against one another. Turns out that no, just explaining how Speed works took a thousand damn words. I thought about ‘hey, who’s the fastest Transformer‘ and found the best answer I could have for that was absolutely nonsense and completely at odds with how Transformers presents that. Keeping with the theme of ‘speed’ during GDQ I wrote about the Speed of Communication and ways to categorise and consider that in your worldbuilding.
I talked about the Minotaur, the Iron Hearts, and the 404 Not Found of Cobrin’Seil, cultures that matter and need to be available for players, but need to also have a material presence in the world that makes them matter. 3rd Edition D&D had some real weird rules corners, and one of them was The Monk, and hey, hey now, I am talking about 3rd edition. You know, the real actual 3rd edition, the 3rd edition before 3.5 that everyone likes to pretend was just part of the same continuity. Anyway, monks were bad. And weird, and they didn’t have game language to describe their mechanical needs.
I also tried to confront the way that Atheism gets treated as a special kind of social evil which just happens to be in contest with someone claiming absolute knowledge of the runner of the whole universe, but we’re the smug ones. Also just vented about how much Mike Winger sucks ass, truly besmirching the noble name of Internet Weirdo Dudes Surnamed Winger, RIP to a real one.
For Magic: The Gathering content, I inspected 2023’s mechanics and what I want to do with them, along with my articles reflecting on 2023’s daily cards and announcing the plan for 2024’s daily cards — the story of Vox Maxima.
This month’s shirt/sticker design was this cute artwork I did of a Ralts reading books:
You can get this design printed on things here. Time is probably limited on this one.
And what else has happened this month, what do I have in terms of diary? Well, truth be told, I don’t have a good answer to that right now because as I write this it’s the twelfth of the month. January is a weird month, lots of stuff gets done because the year is now open in front of me, and as a result, I get a lot of stuff in the queue. I also had a subtheme for this month, with GDQ providing Speed Week.
What I do know about this month though, what I know about my diary, is that I’ve been working on things that need work. I have had to reconcile that the pandemic didn’t just pause my work it made it worse and that means that I’ve been finding victories where I can: What can I do? What can I make better? How much faster can I get things done? How can I make sure I’m always working? And …
At this point…
I’ve done it. I’ve done what I can so far, and I am going to get better.
I wanted to have Lysen Co out by now. I wanted to have Cancon stuff done, too! But money makes a lot of things in that space not stuff I can idly play around with, which is frustrating. This is a point where I’m really grateful for my Patreon – and yes, that does make me worry that I’m going to be trying hard to be crowd pleasing. I guess what I’m saying is if you say ‘I like this’ you might find me overproduce that because I want you to have more of it.
Got my booster shot. Jab in the arm. No reactions, no notes, incredibly boring. Actually no, my shoulder hurts a little bit which I think might be because a guy in a coat stuck a thin piece of metal into it so they could stuff some MRNA shedding nanomachines into my bloodstream so Bill Gates could track me. Mentioning that because it should be a thing people remember to do, and I did it. Easy Feel Good Points for me, since I don’t have any meaningful reactions and they could be sticking maple syrup in me for all I know. I’m genuinely at the point where I think I might be nonsymptomatic, and Fox might be too, and I may have contracted and shared Covid a hundred times and never noticed it because the canary in my personal coal mine is… immune… to… coal? Anyway.
I spend some time this month reading Michel Foucault, right at the source, and lemme tell you that guy’s work is dense. He’s got this really nuggety attitude of words, where there’s very little use of example and demonstration – there’s these heavy laden words that get explained, then he’ll drop all four of the ones he’s been explaining in a sentence and moving on. It means there’s a lot of back tracking and like ‘hey, is this what I think it means?’ It’s a really interesting experience of spending four hours with a twenty-two page essay and realising that yeah, I have these great ideas and I can explain them but it’s translated to… two hundred? words on the page.
There’s also been some delving into Roland Barthes, and back to Johan Huizinga, because Magic Circle theory has become more important to my demonstration of why I’m not invested in Magic Circle theory. Got to demonstrate that expertise.
It was CanCon month! I didn’t make a post about CanCon specifically, because the schedule filled up and that’s just how things go. CanCon meant three days away from my normal computer, and you know what that meant? When the Gene Wars video went up it went up with an audio error and I had to wait two days to fix it! Oh well, I’m sure we all had a laugh about it. I unlisted that video and by the time this goes up it should be fixed. And a new video should be a few days away. Shh~.
Anyway. CanCon was great! Nothing terrible happened and I’m definitely not writing this on night 2 of 3 thinking ‘well nothing bad is going to happen tomorrow!’
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

How is Edelgard the best unit gameplay-wise ? She's my favorite character but I don't know much about unit tier-listing and all that
I made a post on this ages back, here you go:
Reddit also went into it here.
Here's some fun quotes from that:
S Tier - incredibly she somehow has an even better early game than the S-tier Byleths thanks to higher strength, easy access to Weight-3, brainless Armor Knight certification, and good base Authority for early Blaze. Transitions to flight at lv 10 and never needs to look back. Galeforces her way through any problematic Part 2 maps thanks to the frankly ludicrous Raging Storm. Pound for pound might be the best unit in the game thanks to how much better and more centralizing she is than Dimitri in the early game.
Girlboss indeed.
Edelgard is also very good before she gets her hands on Aymr as well, her bases are among the best in the game, 13 base Str + 55% growth means she puts a massive dent to anything she attacks from the get go and can reliably ORKO with Brave Weapons later on. She has decent bulk, the best in her house along with Ferdinand though Petra is better at baiting speedier enemies since she won't get doubled, that being said Black Eagles don't have a dedicated tank and you'd be better off recruiting Balthus who can do the job better. Her Charm is among the best in the game which means her Gambits have high Accuracy and hits hard and she can dodge enemies Gambits more reliably than most units in your team.
Edelgard is hands down the best unit in this game. I’d be inclined to put her in a tier by herself in S+, but going by the rubric laid out by OP she is S tier.
Edelgard thoroughly dominates the early portion of the game with the best base strength among students and outstanding bases in other stats. Her middling base speed is easily fixed by her easy access to Wt-3 and later Darting Blow. She can also certify in Armor Knight for a cheeky defense boost. She is tanky as heck, never gets doubled, deals out huge damage, and her personal allows her to snowball quite dramatically. She can be argued as the best early game unit, although Dedue, Leonie, Dimitri, and the Byleths are competitive.
Mid game she still dominates although she has some competition. She will basically be the best of the female flying units. Death and Darting Blow, along with Weight -3 and Hit +20 make her a fearsome combat unit. She will double quite frequently and has good survivability on enemy phase.
But once Chapter 13 rolls around, it’s all over for every other unit. Raging Storm is either the #1 or #2 most busted thing in the entire game depending on how you feel about Warp. Edelgard can legitimately beat maps by herself once she gets this ability. It’s so good that I have to force myself not to use it sometimes because I don’t want to just solo the game with her. The fact that all part 2 maps are boss kill just makes her complete overkill in this game.
She is better than her stepbrother. Not his fault, just the way the game is designed favors a broken PP unit more than a broken EP unit. I will say that Edelgard needs more investment to be amazing than Dimitri does, but at the end of the day she is just flat better than him, to a degree where the higher investment doesn’t sway me.
Best unit in the game imo. At worst she's FByleth but with better boons/tutoring, meaning easier access to armor skills/classes and wyverns. She's one your best early game units, to the point that I still rate her highly in Silver Snow. And of course there's Raging Storm. Awakening Galeforce was way too broken; restricting it so only 1 unit can use it 5 times in a row clearly solves the problem right? The one weakness she may have is that she wants to rely on crit in order to kill with Raging Storm, especially against bosses, but Crest of Flames prevents her from using defiant crit more consistently.
Yes, she is better than Dimitri. Dimitri heavily relies on bwrath/vantage and is much weaker without it, and it's painfully apparent in HBD and even some of the later chapters. Even without Amyr, Edelgard is still FByleth with better boons. While her strength/speed growths may be lower, she's actually going to outdamage/outspeed Dimitri for a very long time thanks to her bases and easier access to strong skills/classes. May be a different story if more route objectives were present, but in reality many maps just require defeating the commander(s), which Edelgard excels very well at.

I haven’t started a kingdom hearts game ranking either, so here you go
Kingdom hearts: S-tier. Easy. C’mon. It’s so good. It still holds up so well. The atmosphere and vibes are second to none in the whole series. The exploration is only outdone by kh3, a game that came out SEVENTEEN YEARS LATER. The story is self contained which lets it be just as, if not more, narratively satisfying than every other numbered title. It’s absolutely phenomenal.
Chain of memories: I want to love this game so badly, I swear. The combat is genuinely great against bosses and on the last three floors, and the story is so good and the darkest in any kingdom hearts game (and it’s not even close tbh). But the first like TWENTY HOURS are so rough. Before you settle into a good deck the combat is… not awful, but not good. The Disney worlds are a slog. I could only get through them because I was skipping the cutscenes. They’re just the kh1 stories but rushed, and without NEARLY as much charm. B-tier. A great game hidden under a polarising combat system and god awful filler.
358/2 days: AGGRESSIVE CRYING. But no seriously A-tier. Phenomenal game held back by being on a ds. But when a game’s only flaw is “hardware limitations”, you know it’s a great game. But even then, the only other console I’d have it on is the ds. Days has some of the best uses of the dual screens I’ve ever seen, best of which is Roxas’ memories of Sora. When Roxas experiences events similar to Sora’s adventure and you see Sora’s memory on the bottom screen playing out in real time - there’s nothing like it. And there’s no real way to experience it other than on the ds (or 3DS (or wii u I GUESS)). The combat isn’t GREAT, but it’s still good! The story might just be the best in the franchise, the characters are some of my favourites, the panel system makes inventory management so damn fun, seeing the organisation operate is so cool, the Disney worlds are actually pretty good, GOD this game is so good. But I can’t give it an S because it is very clearly a ds game. I can’t put it into words but there’s clearly restrictions that do hamper the game like each weapon only having two combos (maybe a second route if you’re lucky). I WANT it to be S-tier but I had so much more fun with kh1 and am having so much more fun with kh2. It sadly just doesn’t compare. It deserved a full remake for the hd1.5 collection so it could reach its glory.
anyway 2 is probably going to be S-tier. The combat is SO FUCKING GOOD. Probably the lowest or second lowest in S-tier, due to the Disney worlds, but still. Absolutely phenomenal so far.

Matt’s 2022 Visual Novel Tier List
We're counting down/ranking all the visual novel's I read in 2022!
C-Tier:
Melty Blood
TATARI is a fantastic concept, and Sion’s a really fun new character to throw in with the Tsukihime cast, but the actual storytelling was more often than not really really boring. The comedy route was nice, but most of the game’s a slog to get through since all the different paths are very samey.
It didn’t help that I knew the gist of the story from reading the manga adaptation several years back. After rereading the manga again after going through the game, it’s a very solid adaptation and my preferred version of the story (though, I don’t think Act 2’s adaptation of the comedy route works nearly as well).
B-Tier:
Kagetsu Tohya
I ended up enjoying this more than I expected, though I'll admit that I don’t remember too much of the main story outside of the major beats with Len, who’s great. Type-Moon would execute this premise much stronger with Hollow Ataraxia a couple years later, but I don’t think you can write this game off because of that.
The Ten Nights of Dreams stories were the highlight for me. With two or so exceptions, they’re fantastic side stories, easily my favorite part of the experience.
First Snow
A nice little lesbian college romance. It’s free so it’s easy to recommend. Short, not very complicated, and as a standalone prequel/demo for the devs' upcoming game, it does a good job. I’m looking forward to Twofold.
A-Tier:
Tsukihime [reread]
I reread the Near Side routes back in 2021 before Remake dropped, then early this year I finished the Far Side. I really fell in love with it going through the second time, especially Kohaku’s route.
(now please localize the remake, Aniplex. In a perfect world you’d translate that AND the original, but give me the new one at least it looks so so so good i really wanna read it)
Higurashi Question Arcs
Fantastic horror, I can’t recommend it enough. Chapter 1 is free so go download it. It’s so worth getting into this eight-game series disguised as one or two games depending on who you ask (just save yourself some time, skip the character arc, and just switch to the original sprites right away).
It might have landed itself higher on the list if my experience reading the first two chapters hadn’t been plagued by half-remembered spoilers from watching the anime over a decade ago. It proved that barely-remembered spoilers can be worse than well-remembered spoilers because a whole backburner of my brain was stuck trying to figure out how that corrupted data fit into what I was reading instead of appreciating the storytelling. Kinda frustrating, but not the game’s fault. Thankfully it wasn’t an issue Chapter 3 onward (what a great chapter omg).
Queen Beast
Queen Beast! Queen Beast! Please read it! It’s so fun and charming and good. It’s under five hours, you can easily read it in one or two sittings. And It’s impossibly free-to-play. Just a delightful fantasy adventure about a young man rescuing his sister from a mysterious knight riding a dragon known for abducting women with big boobies. Some of the most fun I had with a VN all year. I’m probably going to reread it soon, honestly.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for anything Envelope does in the future.
Did I mention it’s free and I'm very annoyed I can’t find any way to give the folks who made it some money? Very rude of them to not let me praise their incredible work with cash. But whatevs, maybe next time.
S-Tier:
So I read too many great VN’s this year, so the top tier is PACKED. The ranking for everything (with the exception of first place) shifts based on my mood, so this is ordered by my current feeling/the order I felt like talking about them. Consider it a four-way tie for second place.
Higurashi Answer Arcs
You wanna cry? You wanna cry a whole lot? Do I have the visual novel for you! Again! 'cause the second half is even better.
If Higurashi’s first half is a fantastic horror series, its Answer Arcs continues that while becoming an undisputed masterpiece. The way the story explodes from a small town potentially supernatural horror story to a (spoilers!) complex 1980’s political conspiracy thriller without ever losing its focus on the characters or its heart is applause-worthy.
Please Be Happy
And the award for biggest surprise of the year goes to PBH! It was a solid B-tier, maybe even A, until one of the routes it splits off into caught me in an emotional headlock it still refuses to release me from. A very solid slice-of-life comfy urban fantasy romance that ended up meaning a whole lot more to me than I could have expected.
Full Metal Daemon Muramasa
Motherfuckinggoddamnfuckyeah Full Metal Daemon Muramasa fuck yeah let’s fucking go hell yeah fuck yeah.
Welp, if that wasn't one of the best things I’ve had the honor of reading, I don’t know what is. Fuuuuck!
I went into this one blind. I didn’t even know the premise. I wanted to read some grimdark outside of my at the time comfort zone and it paid off. I’m so glad I gave this one a chance.
Witch on the Holy Night
I genuinely cannot believe this was as good as I’d hyped myself for six years into hoping it was. Easily my personal go-to recommendation for anyone wanting to get into Type-Moon. Some of the most impressive spectacle and presentation I’ve ever seen in a visual novel (and that says a lot considering it's the same year I read FMDM). Arguably some of Nasu’s best character work, the relationship between the three main characters and the supporting cast is masterful. It even has a surprising amount of optional bonus content that stands very well alongside the phenomenal main story. Hopefully, it starts a trend of Type-Moon’s backlog being released in English.
And the uncontested best visual novel I read in 2022 is…
Umineko Answer Arcs
I read this back in April, and I knew as soon as I finished that it would be the best thing I read all year. No contest. And that opinion wasn’t shaken once.
An incredible loving dissection of the mystery genre. The word that kept coming to mind while I was reading it was “confidence.” I can’t think of another story so brazen. I can only begin to imagine how nerve-wracking it was writing a mystery this large a scale, one that gleefully points out the rules and means to criticize itself, commenting on the genre, challenging the characters and audience to find fault with it, the balance between setting up the reveals while hiding them in plain sight... Reading Umineko is watching a writer full-speed sprint across a tightrope, and Ryukishi07 pulls it off with absurd grace.
Do yourself a favor, love yourself, and get into When They Cry.

Legends of Arceus almost going to the S - Rank Pokemon Game Tier for me
Another one of my untiring charades regarding Pokemon games. Because why not?
Today I wanna talk about Pokemon Legends of Arceus and the reasons why it was almost the S - Tier of Pokemon Games with me. Keep in mind that this will have minor spoilers so kindly read this at your own risk.
THE S RANK POINTS
Reason #1 : The exploration
Walking around while chasing those Starters and probably getting the imaginary battle that I had in my head while playing Gen 3 came to life is probably the best scenario.
Reason #2: The catching mechanic and encounters. I finally played the Let's Go Series after Arceus (and of course the Price Drop from those older games were worth it). So far what i had experienced in Let's Go is just throwing balls. But no, Arceus is a good mix of that. Sneaking and hitting them at the back with the Balls and getting a critical capture is probably the best feature Gamefreak did. Like who has time for loading mechanics? Seriously, this is a game changer. It feels more realistic when you get chased by those hostile Alphas or just those Beedrills. The best part about that? you can just continue to run away. Unlike in Sw/Sh or in SV were you a forced on an encounter. And let me just say that seeing that shiny shing whenever you see a shiny pokemon is also a good mechanic.
Reason #3 : The sidequests
Sure this game is a short story but man the sidequests are good with the content. And some of the NPCs are actually pretty fun to talk too. Sidequests can either be funny as to looking for all those pesky bidoofs or doing a 900 korok seed style and catching that Spiritomb. The best part is the pay off, if you managed to get all the sidequests, you can relive your DS Diamond and Pearl Trauma by encountering Arceus in the DP Remakes.
Reason #4: The payoff in doing the pokedex and getting all the entries.
Starting from Generation Six XY. I made a living dex and started completing all the pokedex. Sure it was no easy feat, the only pay off that i get is a certificate and a shiny charm that may or may not get me some shinies depending on how good the RNG gods feel like being generous. But on this game, I did get a payoff: its meeting the Pokemon god itself. This kind of makes it good that the plot just ties after you finish the pokedex. And well as for the entries they can be a tiresome to do but hey they are quite fun to complete and that is when you will get the shiny charm.
--
S RANK DEDUCTING POINTS
Ok so not all of the games are perfect and this comes with this game. So here is why I think that Arceus almost made an S but got into A rank in my game instead.
Deduction #1: Where is my mini map Gamefreak?
Bruh even year olds game had mini maps on their lower left or lower right. This game promotes exploration and not even a lower map? This is the part that i kind of dislike and it might be just a nitpick. But come on! Dont make me continuously press Y for the map? Oh you will? Well that sucks.
Deduction #2: Fast Travels where?
Muh fast travel posts. I feel like this is not the most often talked mechanic about. Yes the maps aren't that large, but still, I would like to conveniently fast travel on some locations sometimes. Perhaps this is a plot related thing to having little to no travel posts.
--
The conclusion: Pokemon Legends of Arceus is a great game! If you want that exploration with no map or just not that nitpicky, it might be an S Rank for you.
