I love these guys! They even let their tongues hang limply out like a cartoon. All they're missing is little 'X's over their eyes.
Dead wunk
Take him at his word, he's dead

Today in random things I research for writing: snakes!
It's taking me forever to write this chapter, but at least I'm learning new things.
Snake stuff is under the cut. I'm hiding it because I know snakes freak a lot of people out.
I thought there'd be a preview image for this web page, but apparently not. Lots of pics and info about snake body language and behavior!
FWIW, I'm cool with not-harmful-to-humans-or-pets snakes being around. To date I've happily coexisted with* eastern rat snakes, eastern hog-nosed snakes, eastern corn snakes, garter snakes, and a small, brown snake that likes water that I don't remember the name of.
*meaning "snake lives in the yard, not my house" A zookeeper films two rattlesnakes in the video below. I cannot imagine being this close to them even though they're being "friendly." The snakes' behavior is calm and curious where the video starts.
Be forewarned that at 6:00 the zookeeper feeds the snakes a dead rat. There's some blood. I stopped watching there. That was enough for me!

[I've been planning on getting a new pet (my dog passed away a few years ago)
And we're planning on getting another one.]
Ann: Seeing Rat, a snake sounds interesting too, but I have absolutely no idea how to take care of one. (Besides, my parents don't exactly like reptiles too much)
Ann: Is it true you have to give Rat food that's still alive?! (ʘᗩʘ)
Lynn: Let me look this up because with reptiles as pets, you can do live mice or dead ones. *googling*
Although Hognoses eat mainly amphibians in the wild, they eat a rodent-based diet in captivity. Your snake should be transitioned to a rodent diet before you bring them home. Frozen thawed mice are the safest option for feeding. Young hognose snakes will eat pink mice every 3-4 days and size up as they grow. Juveniles: food every 4-5 days and Adults: food 1x/week.
While young mice can be used to feed your hognose snakes, these calorie-dense feeders aren’t the best for your pet’s health, and should be used as part of rotation at most. Hognose snakes fed primarily rodents are more likely to suffer from obesity and related health problems than those fed a more natural diet.
Here are some non-rodent ideas for feeding your hognose:
African clawed frogs
Cane toads
Cuban tree frogs
Redback salamanders
Gray treefrogs
Axolotls
Quail eggs
Frozen/thawed anoles
Dropped gecko tails
Reptilinks
Hognose snakes rely on their sense of smell in order to help them find prey, not a heat signature. (“Strong response to anuran chemical cues by an extreme dietary specialist, the eastern hog-nosed snake (Heterodon platirhinos)” by William Cooper and Stephen Secor, 2007). However, it has been observed that hognoses seem to respond better to warm prey items, so it’s possible that the warmth disperses the scent better.
If you are using frozen-thawed prey (recommended), thaw it out in the fridge the night before feeding day. This allows it to thaw slowly in a cold environment, which discourages bacterial growth, the same as how you’re supposed to thaw frozen meat. Then about 15-30 minutes before feeding, stick the prey in a BPA-free plastic bag like a Ziploc and submerge in warm, almost hot, water. The body temperature of a mouse is similar to a human’s, so you’ll want the prey to be about 98-100°F before offering it to your snake.
Hognose snakes are more visually dependent than some other snakes, so you may need to simulate “lifelike movement” (just wiggling it around will do) before the snake strikes.

Bite-Sized! Monday Update 1
I have found all beasts that will fill the bestiary for the game.
Lizards in this world are called Drakes and there are quite a few to find, such as:
Broad-Headed Skinks
Coal Skinks
Common Five-Lined Skinks
Eastern Glass Lizards
Little Brown Skinks
Six-Lined Racerunner
Slender Glass Lizard
There is a single feline beast available to fight which is a bobcat.
Fish are another section in the bestiary. Consisting of:
Black Crappies
Bluegills
Bowfins
Common Carp
Red Swamp Crayfish
Warmouths
Different birds, which are referred to as Raptors, are some of the most difficult enemies. These birds are:
American Kestrels
Butcher Birds
Carolina Wrens
Crows
House Sparrows
Northern Cardinals
Red-winged Blackbirds
Song Sparrows
Rodents can also be found across the region. These rodents consist of:
Chipmunks
Common Muskrats
House Mice
Moles
Pocket Gophers
Shrews
Squirrels
Water Drakes, also known as amphibians, are there to defeat in combat. There are many to encounter, such as:
American Bullfrogs
American Green Treefrogs
Eastern Newts
Fowler’s Toads
Gray Treefrogs
Green Frogs
Marbled Salamanders
Spotted Salamanders
Spring Peepers
Woodhouse’s Toads
Snakes, also known as Wyrms, prowl the area. These deadly ambush predators are:
Dekay’s Brownsnakes
Eastern Garter Snakes
Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes
Glossy Swampsnakes
North American Racers
Plain Bellied Water Snakes
Red-bellied Snakes
Rough Greensnakes
Western Ribbon Snakes
Ending off the list of beasts are the Wyverns, which is the name for bats. These Wyverns include:
Big Brown Bats
Eastern Red Bats
Evening Bats
Hoary Bats
Mexican Free-tailed Bats
Silver-haired Bats
Southeastern Myotis
Tricolored Bats
There will also be insectoid enemies that you will be able to fight. Can you guess what area in the Americas this game's first setting takes place in?

Spring Peeper Patrol, June 2, 2023
We didn’t know it, but, we had a destiny to come to terms with: we would become the sole members of the Spring Peeper Patrol on this day. The teeny tiny little darlings were in desperate need of assistance, and we were there in the nick of time to rescue them. We took our new-found roles very seriously, for the sake of the little guys out there.
In addition, we met a very hungry deer, several relaxed flyers, and even MORE snakes. One was rather intriguing, an eastern hog-nose. He was vibrant, probably freshly shed. After reading up on him after the fact, we learned that they do not resort to biting when threatened, but instead prefer an initial high-speed head butt. It was funny to imagine, to say the least.
Also, very unexpectedly, we found a large patch of cactus in the middle of the woods.
