PR girl turns princess - June 1999
If ever there was a girl who epitomised middle England and its Home Counties lifestyle, it is Sophie Rhys-Jones
Her family's only line back to "blue blood" is a distant ancestor called Viscount Molesworth, a 17th century diplomat. But what Sophie lacks in royal lineage, she has most certainly made up for in worldly experience and professional success.
Born on 20 January 1965 in Oxford, Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones grew up in the west Kent village of Brenchley. Sophie, her parents and elder brother David lived in four-bedroom 17th century farmhouse remains the family home until today.
Her father, Christopher, the son of a teacher, is a retired salesman for a tyre maker. He once said he added the hyphen to the family name because he thought it made it sound more upmarket.
Her mother, Mary O'Sullivan, comes from a family of mainly Irish shopkeepers and farmers. Mrs Rhys-Jones, a charity worker and secretary, has her own royal connection. As a young woman she once danced with Prince Philip at a society ball.
Schooldays in the country
Sophie was an energetic, robust child, excelling in tennis, hockey and netball at school.
Her prep school head, Robin Peverett, now retired and a holder of an OBE for his services to education, said: "My memory of her is very much as a happy, popular, natural girl with lost of common sense, conscientious at her school work and good at sport."
Sophie became a day girl at the ÂŁ1,400-a-term Kent College for Girls in Pembury, where she also enjoyed riding, ballet and amateur dramatics.
She had a mildly wild reputation among her peers, mainly borne out of stories of her and two other pupils stealing alcohol from their fathers' drinks cabinets for quiet tipples in the library.
Sophie left Kent College with 8 O-Levels and enrolled at West Kent College Tonbridge on a two-year A-Level and secretarial course, where she is remembered by friends and teachers for her lively personality and sporty streak.
Big break
Soon after leaving college at 18, Sophie started work as a secretary for a London public relations firm. It was a year later, in 1986, that she landed her big break - in the press department at the city's popular Capital Radio.
Her colleagues' memories of her time there are glowing. Programme Controller Pete Simmons said: "She got on with everyone and we all adored her. She was always game for laugh and really down to earth."
About the same time, she became involved in a serious relationship with businessman Jeremy Barkley, 11 years her senior. But it was not to last. After their amicable split, Sophie moved jobs to become a manager with the ski company, Bladon Lines.
She was posted for four months to the Swiss Alps resort of Cras Montana where she met ski instructor Mike O'Neill. She moved with him to his native Australia but the romance came to an end.
Sophie took advantage of her time abroad by backpacking around Australia and the Far East with friends before heading home to England in 1991.
PR business
Although unemployed, Sophie had a good circle of friends and was often seen at parties in the country.
With her good set of social and professional contacts, she landed a job with PR firm Brian MacLaurin and a year later, joined with business partner Murray Harkin to set up her own public relations company, R-JH.
Today, as the company's chairman, she has an illustrious client list including celebrity magazine OK!, the Lanesborough Hotel, and Mayfair designer Thomas Goode.
Working relationship
It was her work that caught the eye of her future husband, Prince Edward. Their first formal meeting was at a strategy session to discuss a Real Tennis charity event that the Prince was organising in 1993.
Their meeting sparked off the prince's interest in Sophie. Their relationship began soon after.
Sophie's looks have often been compared to the late Princess Diana. But the two women could not be more different.
While Diana married a man 12 years her senior at the naĂŻve age of 20, Sophie is a mid-30s career woman who intends to maintain her professional life even after marriage.
On her engagement to Prince Edward, she was asked how she felt about joining the Royal Family. Her answer was simple and honest: "It is slightly nerve-racking in many ways. But I am ready for it now and I am fully aware of the responsibilities."

1824 Aug., Thurs. 26
6 1/2
11 3/4
Used my umbrella instead of a stick, which altogether took me quarter hour and going to the cabinet as much longer – Dawdling and not ready till 8 50/60 at which hour (having marked down my route on a bit of paper set off to Upper 9 Duke Street Grosvenor Square to order a pair of stays of Waller, recommended by Miss Pattison and Mrs. Ackers to M– [Mariana]
3/4 hour dressing and undressing, and having a pair tried on – Spoke to Mr. Waller, a plain-in-his-appearance respectable elderly man, then measured by 1 of his young women – Very civil – Then went to Hutton and Buckley 7 Upper Grosvenor Street – Measured by Buckley –
Sauntered slowly back – Went along Piccadilly as far as the Basin and Bolton Street – Got home at 11 – Had breakfast (boiled milk) settled the remainder of my accounts I could not finish last night and wrote the above of today which has taken me till 12 25/60 – I am just going to arrange when to go and what to do next § – Feel quite comfortable, and at home, and amused, and happy – ( § doing this has taken me till now, 1 p.m.)
Went out at 1 10/60 and took Cordingley with me – our route, the Haymarket, Pall-mall as far as Carlton Palace, then back to the bottom of the Haymarket along Cockspur, Charing Cross, Strand (went down to look at Waterloo bridge and turned for a minute or 2 into the Court of Somerset-house), Fleet Street (ordered tea at Twinning’s for my father five pounds worth), Ludgate Hill, ditto strait past Saint Paul’s, along Watling Street, Bridge Road, Cannon Street, Great East Cheap, Fish Street Hill to No. 5 Monument Yard, Miles Stringer and Co. to order £5 worth tea for my [blank] –
Paid for this, as I had done for my father’s at Twinning’s, ordered it to be sent off immediately and the receipts respectfully also with it – Mr. Stringer shewed me a nearer way thro’ his courtyard (thro’ 2 passages with steps up and down them the last of which opened into “Saint Mary at the Hill” and Saint Mary brought us into Thames street –
Then along the river front of the custom house, into Thames Street again and so to the tower – Walked along the East North and West sides of the moat, then went over the draw-bridge as far as we might (a beef-eater stopt the way – it would have been his perquisite or that of some others brethren to shew the interior) –
Returned by Thames Street Bridge road, Queen Street, across cheapside, King Street to the Guildhall, a noble gothic room – Large gothic windows with painted glass – 2 monuments one to the memory of the first Mr. Pitt afterwards Lord Clatham and the other to that of the last Mr. Pitt (William) – 2 gigantic statues partly in armour at the west end of the room (the hall) one in each corner –
On returning into Cheapside, went as far as the Mansion House, then turned back and went in to Saint Pauls – It was near 3 and during service – Stood a while to hear the chanting took a hasty view of the nave and transepts, and returned to Temple bar –
Then up Chancery lane, along Holborn, Hatton Garden, Hatton wall, Vine Street, to Clerkenwell to see the tread-mill, the only one in London (there is one at           3 miles from here) – It was too late – not shown after 3 and it was 3 20/60 – Besides I ought to have had a permit from the sitting magistrate in Hatton Garden – Might get one anytime from 11 to 3 tomorrow – I am determined to see this, not only for its own sake, but “the tread-mill” was the only thing Miss Maclean saw when in London this year –
From Clerkenwell along Vine Street, Hatton road, Portpool, King’s Road, Theobald’s Road, Bloomsbury Square, Hart Street, museum Street, Great Russell Street (too late to see the British Museum but just peeped into the court) Hanway Street? into Oxford Street, into Soho Square
Walked about a few minutes in the Bazar (a large building in the the north corner of the west side – well worth seeing) – Came out at the South side, thro’ Fifth Street, Compton Street, Princes Street, Coventry Street, Piccadilly 220 –
Got home at 5 1/2 – Cordingley said she was tired from being the weaker for her bilious attack, but should be better and stronger tomorrow – We must have [walked] 10 or 12 miles – Too far for her (dinner at 5 35/60) – Sent her out a glass of port wine – She really seems no worse for her walking –
Excellent vermicelli soup and harrico of mutton for dinner with potatoes and kidney beans, and cold cherry and currant tart – Mr. Webb who brought the first dish in yesterday and today, says there must be above 12,000,000 inhabitants in London, an addition of about 4000 about a year ago, chiefly Spanish refugees, settled about Soho Square in Crown Street, Queen Street, Compton Street, King Street, etc
He says I ought to see the Roman Catholic Chapel in Moorfields – It is very splendid – and advises my going to the Jew’s synagogue in Moorfields about 11 a.m. on Saturday – After dinner for above an hour tracing out this mornings route on the map –
From 8 to 9 writing so far of this page – In walking about this morning, could not help feeling proud of the metropolis of my country – What magnificence – What comfort – What luxury! Like Tyre of old, her merchants are princes –
Writing out the rough draft of my index of today and yesterday took me from 9 to 9 25/60 – On coming in to dinner Monsieur Leuliette presented me with my passport, which he had got this morning from the French Ambassador “gratis” for his excellency and from Monsieur Leuliette, whom I merely pay by going in their coach from here to Paris – Very fine day –
Settling what to do tomorrow took me till 10 1/2 – Went to my room at 10 3/4 – E [two dots, treating venereal complaint] O [no dots, marking discharge] None, or so very little as to be scarce perceptible
[sideways in margin] Waller, Stays Maker. Buckley, Tailor

African Time Sunday 18th Nov
Mo and the others arrived on time and tumbled into bed.
It rained heavily in the night with some thunder.
We met for breakfast about 8.30 and as is the way when travelling discovered the other lady at the table runs a project for children with physical disabilities, based in Fort Portal, which we had already heard about.  In fact we’d all been in the same email discussion initiated by Dr Rob at Kagando within the last couple of months! She is making a difference to another low priority group, many of them with cerebral palsy and sometimes epilepsy as well. Her team will certainly improve some children’s’ lives and those of their parents.
Our transport was due at 8.30.  We were due in Kampala at 10.30 to have some video taken which might be used in a video UPMB (Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau) are making on mental health care.
It was regrettable that the vehicles didn’t reach us till 11.10.  They said the rain had delayed them.(!) We didn’t reach the UPMB offices till after 12.  James Mwesigwa was very understanding and said things go slower in Africa.
Tumblr media
E&M, David, James, Linda and Hugh
We each did a bit on video and we had a very useful conversation with James.  He is the UPMB lead for mental health and it turns out he worked for 12 years in London helping set up community care when they were emptying the asylums.  He has a couple of relevant master degrees and is doing well at being an advocate for MH services.  Our conversations are to be continued.  David is an expert on data, so may also be useful.
We got away much later than I had intended.  We aim to avoid driving after dark, and we weren’t clear how long our journeys would take. Hugh and Linda headed off south and we went across Kampala, picking up some food, fuel, and money, and went west to Jinja to cross the Nile.  The last time I crossed it there was when I was 4.
This road is the main road to Mombasa, the nearest port and so all the imports for Uganda and South Sudan plus some for the East DRC, Rwanda and Tanzania come along this road.  It takes a hammering with the tyre tracks being about 10 cm lower that the ridge in the middle of the road in places. The road west is better as the trucks usually return empty.
Tumblr media
No idea how effective this herbal jelly is, but I am sure it appeals to parents.
We then turned north east to go to Mbale.  This road was much quieter, so we made better progress. Some of the driving was to closer tolerances than I am used to.
Tumblr media
All these vehicles are moving
Tumblr media
Others have time to contemplate.
The shadows were getting longer and the light more striking.
Tumblr media
Selling charcoal by the road side.
It was getting dark rapidly as we drove into Mbale, and the number of matatus without lights, to say nothing of the motor bikes, was not reassuring.  We were glad to arrive at the Mt Elgon Hotel.
It is a large older style hotel.  I had booked an executive room which they gave us at a very reasonable price.  It was spacious and well set up.
We went down for a good supper and then had an early night.

Digital Oilfield Market 2021 Will Reflect Significant Growth in Future with Size, Share, Growth, and Key Companies Analysis
Exploration activities are engulfing digital technologies and systems at an exhilarating pace. The global oil and gas industry continues to make quantum leaps in unifying people, processes, and technologies. Therefore, it is safe to say that oil and gas companies are the brink of digitalizing their workflows and processes in order to minimize risks and maximize profits. The digital oilfield market is expanding alongside the growing popularity of artificial intelligence, the internet of things (IoT), and the cloud. The sensitive nature of operations conducted across oilfields makes it imperative for operators to have an advanced view of production-related information. Digital oilfields enable operators to gather, assess, analyze, and respond to information and events taking place across the oilfield. This is an important point of utility for oilfield operators.

Big Data Analytics and IoT to Dominate Digital Technologies Used by Oil and Gas Companies
Big data/analytics and IoT were surveyed to be the most sought-after technologies for oil companies during the period between 2016 and 2021. While big data and analytics were an investment priority for 38% of the companies, 36% of the companies showed a sense of proclivity towards investing in IoT. Over the course of the next decade, adoption of other key technologies such as mobile devices, robotics and drones, cloud, wearables, artificial intelligence, and social tools shall also gain momentum. The
is at an important juncture on its journey to acquire robust growth. This assertion is based on the visible growth in ocean vessels deployed by oil companies across the globe. As the fleet of vessels expands, the use of digital technologies to monitor and track their operations shall also increase.
Middle East to Witness Surge in Demand for Digital Oilfield Technologies
Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE are advocating for a non-oil-based economy that thrives on cutting-edge digital technologies. However, instead of being at loggerheads with the oil and gas industry, this new vision has benefitted oil and gas companies. Increased digitalization has ensured that these companies have better access to digital technologies that can be integrated into the oilfield. Therefore, the digital oilfield market in the Middle East would tread along a lucrative track in the forthcoming years. Advancements in technologies for ocean mapping and bathymetry have also caused a rise in adoption of digital technologies by oil companies. However, growth in digital technologies across oilfields also poses several challenges related to data privacy, interoperability, and security. The Shamoon virus launched at Saudi Aramco had caused major disruptions to the overall sync of the oil industry in the Middle East. Therefore, governments are making dedicated efforts to ensure security of data pertaining to digital oilfields.
