Punk Tactics (2023), No Hands (2024), Joey Valence & Brae

I don’t know a massive amount about the Beastie Boys – apart from that they sound rather a lot like this. Genre lineage (slash near-total derivativeness) aside, Joey Valence and Brae simply do what they do well; goofy but mega-agile hip-hop with tonnes of colour and fizzling energy. That said, don’t go to these looking for anything particularly meaningful; both Valence and Brae are mostly preoccupied with rapping about fighting and neither – so far – has produced much memorable vocal stuff.

Whilst there is so much technical ability on display here, three names spanning the very recent history of NYC hip-hop, what I love most is Faith Is a Rock’s sense of identity. One understands the real titular rock is simply New Yawk itself, an unwavering source of style, inspiration, life.
