Mini Cooper Safari Rally Car, 1995. On display at Transport World, a remarkable classic Mini that was built by Robert Plant Engineering (RPE Motorsport) and is a fully-documented Group A Rally Car having originally been put together for the 1995 'Network Q Rally of Great Britain'. More famously it went on to compete in the East African Safari Rally in 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and finally in 2003 where it earned the nick-name 'Du Du' (Swahili for little insect). The car was restored to its former glory, pretty much as it was for its first Safari attempt in 1997 when it was sponsored by Corgi Models, by Malcolm Huxley and Anne Sealand (Annemal Motorsports).

Tracked - Across Antarctica < -- Click for story
Project 356 World Rally began in 2016 with a return to the La Carrera Panamericana, the rally that started it all. From end to end across the interior of Mexico, Valkyrie finished first in class. Down Under at the Targa Tasmania, the team had the only Porsche 356 out of more than 100 cars. Over in South America at Caminos del Inca, the team’s 356 was the first Porsche to compete and, more important, the only non-modern vehicle in the history of the race. Covering two continents in the historic Peking to Paris, she was again the only Porsche 356 in the 9000-mile, 36-day journey. Heading to Africa, Valkyrie Racing finished the toughest classic off-road event on the planet, the East African Safari Classic, to mark the only time in the race’s history for a Porsche 356 to compete.

At age 55, Renée Brinkerhoff had an epiphany: She wanted to race a car. So she took on extreme road racing in a modified 1956 Porsche 356 and has become a highly decorated international rally car racer.
Rally racing is different from NASCAR or Formula One in that the environment is very raw. There are no safety barriers, as you would see on a regular track. The races can last up to 30 days, and not everyone or every car crosses the finish line. Brinkerhoff had a trial by fire in her first race, training in 2012 in the notoriously dangerous La Carrera Panamericana, where 30 percent of cars don't make it. She loved the adrenaline rush, and in 2013, she returned with her own car and became the first woman to win her class in the 30-year history of the race.
Brinkerhoff had no background in automobiles but felt the need to do something extreme after spending years homeschooling her four kids and putting her dreams aside. She began to take driving lessons but was not impressed with modern race cars and their automatic computer systems. When she found a Porsche 356, she knew it was the car for her.
She’s made a number of modifications to the car to push her Porsche 356 to its limits, such as upgrading the original engine and carburetors and adding a sump pump so she wouldn't burn up the engine on fast turns.
In 2017, Brinkerhoff and her Valkyrie Racing team upped the ante and decided to take her 1956 Porsche and race it on all seven continents — including Antarctica. Brinkerhoff’s Project 356 World Rally Tour took her through the most extreme rally races in the world, including the East African Safari Classic, Caminos del Inca , La Carrera Panamericana, Peking to Paris, and Targa Tasmania. In Antarctica, Brinkerhoff added skis in the front of the car and tracks in the back. She used the tour to raise awareness and funds to combat child trafficking around the world, a cause that has been close to Brinkerhoff’s heart for many years.

Full Film: The 2022 East African Safari Rally Featuring Ken Block
This feature-length documentary film covers the 2022 East African Safari Rally though the eyes of the team at Tuthill Porsche. This was the year that Ken Block would take part in the event, the endurance rally adding to his extensive experience in various motorsport disciplines. The film takes on a less jovial and far more somber note now due to the sudden death of Block in a snowmobile accident…

Porsche 911 Dakar Historic Decorative Wraps, 2023. Porsche is offering vinyl wraps that reprise the look of the 1971, 1974, and 1978 entrants in the East African Safari Rally. The Rallye 1971 decal set adds the competition number 19, which belonged to the most successful 911 in this rally – a car that came 5th, driven by Polish drivers Sobiesław Zasada and Marian Bień. In 1974 a 911 Carrera 2.7 RS driven by Björn Waldegård came second. The decals of the main sponsor were the blue stripes that traced the shoulder lines of the otherwise white car. The 1974 wrap takes up this theme augmented by the Porsche logo on the lower edges of the doors. The 1978 wrap relates to the Safari Rally in which Vic Preston Jr. came second driving car number 14 sponsored by Martini whose wave-shaped surfaces in orange and light blue have been reinterpreted by Porsche designers

While I think these photos are from 1973 East African Safari, I have no information on Datsun 240Z #16 & #17. There are no references to these cars and their particular sponsorships. If you know, comment. :)
