Of the first was he to bare arms and a name Wassaily Booslaeugh of Riesengeborg.
Finnegan’s Wake - James Joyce
ChatGPT40 literary report:
This line from Finnegans Wake—“Of the first was he to bare arms and a name Wassaily Booslaeugh of Riesengeborg”—is a rich example of Joyce’s densely packed allusions, wordplay, and mythopoetic layering. Let's break it down, engaging with some critical interpretations.
1. The Mythic and Heroic Layering
The phrase "Of the first was he to bare arms and a name" recalls the primordial act of assuming a name and taking up arms, themes common in heroic epics and foundational myths. This suggests an archetypal figure, someone representing a "first man" or original patriarch, much like Adam in the Bible or some culture's founding hero. Joyce’s use of the word "bare" instead of "bear" introduces multiple meanings—such as "exposing" or "revealing," possibly hinting at the dualities of creation and conflict, honor and violence.
Critical Insight: The character suggested by "Wassaily Booslaeugh" is often interpreted as a stand-in for HCE (Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker), the central figure of Finnegans Wake. HCE represents both an individual and a type—the everyman, the father figure, a symbolic Adamic being. The taking of a name—an essential act of identity formation—echoes the broader theme of historical cycles in Finnegans Wake, where individuals continuously reinvent themselves in various historical and mythic contexts.
2. Wassaily Booslaeugh and the Russian Allusion
The name “Wassaily” immediately evokes the Russian name Vasily (Василий), suggesting an Eastern European connection. Some critics have drawn parallels between this name and Russian historical or literary figures. Vasily may point toward the Russian czars (such as Vasily II) or even literary figures like Dostoevsky’s "Prince Myshkin" in The Idiot, though this is a more speculative connection.
"Booslaeugh" could be seen as an approximation of "Buzlay," hinting at various interpretations, including echoes of Russian or Slavic roots. Additionally, "boos" hints at “boo,” a sound of disapproval, tying into the fall from grace or disgrace motif that haunts HCE throughout the novel. The act of being "booed" might reference both public shaming and comic degradation, as HCE is often ridiculed and disgraced.
Critical Insight: This name reflects Joyce's interest in collapsing the boundaries between cultures and histories. HCE (through his many avatars, including Wassaily Booslaeugh) is not just a Dublin pubkeeper but a figure whose story incorporates all of human history, including Eastern Europe. This reflects Joyce's "transnational" vision of human culture, where figures and motifs transcend their origins and become universal.
3. Riesengeborg: Place of Giants
"Riesengeborg" combines "Riesen," the German word for “giant,” with “Borg,” meaning castle or fortress. The name thus evokes an image of a stronghold of giants, possibly recalling mythic places like the Norse Jotunheim, home of the giants in Scandinavian mythology, or the fortress of some legendary figure. The reference to giants ties into Joyce’s recurring theme of the fallen, overreaching figure—paralleling HCE's role as a giant in his own right, a man of hubris who falls into disgrace.
Critical Insight: Riesengeborg likely refers to more than just a specific mythical or historical place. Joyce often blends the mythic with the historical, creating locales that represent multiple ideas at once. Riesengeborg could also be seen as the symbolic site of a fall—a "castle" from which HCE, as a giant figure, will inevitably be toppled, recalling the fall of great civilizations or mythic figures. Joyce’s giants often represent flawed heroes, beings of great power whose stature is as much a liability as a strength.
4. Joyce’s Wordplay and Themes of History
Critics frequently discuss Joyce’s linguistic play as reflecting his exploration of history's cyclicality. The phrase "to bare arms" might refer both to the literal act of carrying weapons and the figurative exposure of one's identity or vulnerabilities. "Bare arms" echoes heroic traditions where warriors must "prove" themselves, yet the phrase can also signal shame or humiliation. In this light, the act of baring arms takes on a tragicomic tone, as HCE is as much a victim of history’s cycles as he is a heroic figure.
Critical Insight: Joyce’s engagement with historical cycles and mythological figures means that HCE, in his various incarnations (including Wassaily Booslaeugh), serves as both a representative of universal patriarchal authority and as a flawed figure doomed to fall and repeat the cycle. His taking up of arms and names might symbolize the continual reconstruction of history’s heroes—only to expose them as vulnerable to disgrace, much like HCE himself.
5. Multicultural and Polyglot Layers
The blend of Russian, Germanic, and English elements in the names suggests Joyce’s interest in the polyglot nature of language and history. Just as no single culture dominates Joyce’s text, no single interpretation of these names can be definitive. Joyce’s use of multilingual puns and etymological richness makes Finnegans Wake a testament to the interconnectedness of global history and myth, reflecting the interplay between language, identity, and history.
In sum, this line is a typical example of Finnegans Wake’s ability to compress layers of myth, history, and language into a single phrase. "Wassaily Booslaeugh of Riesengeborg" serves as one of many avatars for HCE, representing a mythic everyman figure doomed to repeat cycles of heroism, disgrace, and reinvention across history. Critics often highlight the line’s evocation of heroic beginnings, the vulnerability of patriarchal figures, and Joyce’s engagement with the interplay between language, myth, and identity.

One thing I've noticed in videogame fandoms/culture is how games that were panned at the time, often become very beloved years later. MGS2 is probably the biggest example of this, I remember the flood of complaints from people who felt bait-and-switch'd that you play as Raiden and not Solid Snake for the majority of it, and about Raiden + Rose as characters etc, but now it's spoken of way more kindly.
And I've been seeing the exact same thing happening with Tekken 4 in recent years. The majority of the FGC esp those into competitive play absolutely hated T4 on its release for the clunk, for the introduction of walls + wall infinites, how busted Jin's parry and just frame laser scraper was etc. And of course the mockery around the Steve/Dean Earwicker thing. I have memories of all of this and more, and of hearing about how so many people ignored T4 in favour of going back to TTT (I remember being told about how hard it apparently flopped in arcades + with high level players in Korea, especially). By the community in general, the advancements it made were considered huge and unwanted missteps. I don't know if it's nostalgia now, or if T4 was perhaps a lot of the current playerbase's introduction to the games, but the discourse around it has definitely changed for the positive in more recent times.
And you know what? I'm okay with that. As someone who was a big T4 gameplay hater (I loved the intro and Kaz's return and the story art), the series has definitely improved on concepts that 4 introduced, and T4 had a gritty tone and aesthetics that are in hindsight fun to consider in its niche as a product of its time and what games were like in that era.

i've always wondered, what does HCE stand for? (your cat)
it's a reference to Joyce's Finnegan's Wake, there's a character called Humphery Chimpden Earwicker, but the initials come to variously stand for many things, like Here Comes Everybody. Also, more complicatedly, I was going to adopt two cats, one of which was to be called THC standing for (obv) the psychoactive component in weed and also The Hut Cat, since the name me and my partner have given to our hypothetical, as-yet-unrealised future home together is The Hut (after the strange coincidence of several 20th century philosophers going to live in Huts, especially Wittgenstein who went to live in a hut to 'solve all of philosophy) - so the 2nd cat came to be called Hut Cat Equally. Only, THC didn't settle in with my mother's dogs, so now we only have HCE -- her name stands for so many things -- Huge Consumption Engine (after the time she nearly ate herself to death as a kitten), Horrible Caterwauling Earspliter (when she wakes me up at 7am for food) and Holey Crumpet Endower (because she's got such sharp claws she doesn't make biscuits she makes crumpets)

Do you think there is truth that Joyce's daughter was actually a misunderstood soul and that Karl Jung actually ruined her life by his "treatment"?
Probably not. Even Foucauldian types skeptical of psychology like me believe schizophrenia—probably what she had—has a likely organic basis even if we don't understand it, i.e., more like a brain tumor than like a neurosis. Schizophrenia or, as this book suggests, congenital syphilis (though that book is slightly monomaniacal on the subject of syphilis). I know she's sort of an irresistible symbol with the thwarted dance career and everything, a modernist bacchante, even if we know we're not supposed to use illness as metaphor, and she even turns up briefly in one of the last chapters of my current work-in-progress, but I think the reality of the situation was unglamorous. She seems to have been incorrigibly physically violent, a danger to others, which doesn't come from being a misunderstood soul. Anyway, if we want, irresponsibly, to scandal-monger, speculatively to libel dead men, look not to the psychoanalyst but to the father himself:
Notwithstanding Mark Shechner's contention that "despite the ubiquity of confession in Ulysses and Joyce's other books, that crime remains as mysterious as Earwicker's crime in Phoenix Park," my conviction is that there is sufficient textual support in the novel, not only for fantasies of father/daughter incest, but for the actual occurrence.

I feel like Tekken 4 having Heihachi be the final boss again was because that game was trying to back to being normal-ish, thus Orge and everything Devil is only mentioned, and in the case of the Devils, only seen in Kazuya and Jin's arcade endings.
And with the roster, were it me, I'd have Anna, Bruce, Gun Jack, and Kunimitsu be part of the returning cast, since I think the game would only need one more column to have it feel fuller to where the random select icon is in the middle, and out of them (except Anna who I'd have from the start to fully switch the roles with Nina of who gets unlocked), one could be an extra unlockable to make up for shifting the random select icon to the middle as it'd be a 5X5 box instead.
Granted I don't think there's much to go with in terms of known concept art and the unused names like Sugar McGregor, with the only one we have some idea behind is Dean Earwicker as the original name for Steve before they changed it, so I can't just say "new character here too".
As for Bosconovitch in Tag Tournament, I assume him and Dr. Abel were going to share a slot like Angel/Devil and Alex/Roger, and play the same but adjusted since "the lying down on the floor or only ducking when stood up before falling" gimmick of Bosconovitch would have been annoying to Arcade players who didn't get it, but I imagine they were cut because Dr. Abel had no reason to fight where Bosconovitch was just a joke playable initially, and because Dr. B's combat data was never in the arcade version of Tekken 3 which Tag 1 was based on, so he got cut because the time needed to implement him.
Though I would have loved if the PS2 version included him and the Tekken Fighters, but Tag 1 as a whole is weird anyway given they use the Tekken 1 & 2 Nina/Anna voice for Angel when she got a unique voice for the PS1 release of Tekken 2, thus my theory of not having the stuff to implement console stuff into an updated arcade release.
That cooooould be true considering Tek4 was doing a few New Things. (Such as the terrain being at different levels). Buuuut... Tekken 1 was really the only "normal-ish" one with a Normal Boss. Tekken 2, we immediately get a devil as the last boss, who we can play as along with an angel. I believe the team said they threw in bears and devils because they wanted to be "fun" and differentiate themselves from Virtua Fighter. So, having zany characters and bosses feels a bit more established for the IP. Buuuuuuuut. Also considering how all of Tek4's levels were very grounded in reality, that also supports the idea that they just wanted a "normal" boss for the game. But as I've pointed out, the exclusion of mainstays like Anna, Jack, and Armor King also feels like they're evidence that something happened during development - either budget or time restraint issues. So who really knows about that... it's why I'd like to learn more about the development process! The Cutting Room Floor doesn't have much info on the games even when compared to the Sims console games, which have a lot more interesting stuff on the pages.
All the websites I've visited cited Sugar as Steve's original name. As well as one being "Ryan Lewis," which was for Steve, too. WHICH I would've found to be funny given Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Just how there are two other very Brazilian female names, which were pretty evident they were Christie's original names, too. And Violent who was gonna be called Benjamin for some reason...?
Yeah, that makes sense. But regardless, it would've been interesting to see other nonfighter characters like Dr. B, Abel, Sebastian, and Jane all be in the roster of a future Tag game. Of course, modern fighting games rarely have huge rosters anymore due to the strain of them. (Making sure every character is balanced and fun to play as, etc) But would've been fun to see just a Tag roster that's JAM PACKED with characters! Even if some would've been silly, It would've been entertaining regardless!

NG S02 E22 - The Caterpillar
A woman her husband and a friend of theirs are trapped in a house during a storm.
The husband is way older than the wife and the friend is into her. But she's so cool! She just shuts him right off. I KNOW WHAT LONELINESS AND ABSTINENCE CAN DO TO A MAN AND I HAVE A SUGGESTION: TAKE A BATH!
Dude, I love that light strip on the actors eyes!
Now a man has joined them, I think he's either a wickie or a sailor. He offers to do something to help the friend in exchange for some money. I like that the sailor is queer coded. Anyway he gives the friend an "earwick" a thing that crawls into the ear of a person and eats their brain.
This is fucking terrifying for me, a bug crawling into my ear was one of my biggest fears from childhood.
Of course they end up putting the earwick into the ear of the friend and not the husband. Three weeks of the worst torture a person can feel and impossible to get it out. It enters one ear and gets out the other one. But the guy actually survives it.
But it turns out that the bug was a female and it laid eggs in him. Thanks I hate it!

... and during mighty odd years this man of hod, cement and edifaces in Toper's Thorp piled building supra building pon the banks of the livers by the Soangso.
Finnegans Wake - James Joyce
ChatGPT4o critical interpretations (Created ChatGPT):
This passage from Finnegans Wake is dense with Joyce's characteristic wordplay and allusion, and it invites several layers of interpretation. Let's break it down in parts and explore possible critical interpretations.
1. "mighty odd years"
Joyce often plays with time in the Wake, and here the phrase "mighty odd years" evokes a long, indeterminate stretch of time. The word "odd" here might suggest something unusual or out of the ordinary, hinting at the peculiarity of history and memory in the Wakean universe. It could also play on the idea of "odd numbers," furthering the sense of uncertainty or irregularity. Time in Finnegans Wake is not linear but cyclical, echoing Vico’s theory of recurring ages of civilization, and thus "mighty odd years" could gesture toward the mythic timescales involved in human history and development.
2. "this man of hod, cement and edifaces"
This phrase clearly suggests an archetypal builder, perhaps even alluding to the Masonic tradition, where the "hod" (a tool for carrying bricks or mortar) signifies manual labor, building, and craftsmanship. The mention of "cement and edifaces" ties this figure to construction, both literally and symbolically. The man may be a representative of human civilization's striving for permanence and structure through architecture, which in Joyce’s world, is often a metaphor for language itself—building blocks of culture, tradition, and meaning.
This could be a veiled reference to HCE (Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker), the main protagonist who is often portrayed as a "builder" of sorts, both in the material and social sense. As the patriarchal figure of the Wake, HCE is frequently associated with civilization-building efforts, from constructing cities to founding societies. Joyce intertwines the literal and metaphorical "builder" with the act of storytelling itself—each layer of meaning is a brick in the edifice of Finnegans Wake.
3. "in Toper's Thorp"
"Toper's Thorp" seems to be a blend of two concepts: "toper" (a heavy drinker) and "thorp" (an Old English term for a village or hamlet). This could be read as a winking reference to the recurrent motif of alcohol in Finnegans Wake (think of the pub as a site of storytelling, myth-making, and the cycles of human fallibility). The blending of these two words suggests a place where drink and community converge—possibly referring to the fallible, human aspect of society. The "thorp" could also evoke ancient or medieval communities, underscoring the cyclical passage of time from early human settlements to the modern city.
4. "piled building supra building"
This line vividly evokes a sense of architectural layering, which could symbolize the way civilizations build upon the ruins or foundations of their predecessors. The word "supra" also suggests a hierarchical or metaphysical layering, alluding to the construction not only of material structures but of ideas, languages, and histories. Joyce’s technique often involves palimpsestic layering—stories within stories, histories buried under layers of time, and meanings that stack upon one another like bricks.
The idea of one building being "piled" upon another could reference the recursive, self-referential structure of the Wake itself, where texts and traditions accumulate meaning over time. Each "building" could be a nod to previous narratives, histories, or even earlier parts of Joyce’s own work, all constructing the edifice of the novel.
5. "pon the banks of the livers"
The "livers" here is likely a playful fusion of "livers" (the organ, which filters and sustains life) and "rivers" (the flowing, life-giving water often symbolizing time and memory in Joyce’s work). This blending evokes the River Liffey, which plays a central role in Finnegans Wake as both a geographical feature and a symbol of life’s continuous flow. Anna Livia Plurabelle, who is closely associated with the river, embodies the cyclical nature of time and feminine creativity in the novel.
The "banks of the livers" could also be understood as a metaphor for the thresholds or boundaries of life and history, where human efforts to build civilizations are constantly influenced by the natural, organic flow of time (the rivers/livers). The pun on "liver" as a bodily organ adds a biological layer to this interpretation, emphasizing the body’s integral role in the cycles of life and death, further complicating the line between organic and inorganic structures (bodies vs. buildings).
6. "by the Soangso"
"Soangso" is a playful reduction of "so-and-so," which in English idiom implies something indefinite or deliberately vague. This obfuscation of the specific place name fits with Joyce's technique of rendering places mythic or universally applicable through partial erasure of their specificity. It’s also a characteristic Wake joke, pointing to the arbitrariness of place names and the fluidity of identity. Joyce might be suggesting that these grand human efforts—building civilization—occur everywhere and nowhere, always unfolding at the same time, in the same indeterminate "Soangso" location.
Additionally, "Soangso" could hint at the substitution of one place or civilization for another, implying the ephemeral nature of human achievements. If read as a commentary on historical recurrence, this construction on the "banks of the livers" (the constantly changing flow of time) takes place "by the Soangso," an anonymous site where all human civilizations meet the same inevitable fate.
Synthesis: Symbolic and Mythic Layers
In totality, this passage from Finnegans Wake functions on both a literal and a symbolic level. The literal image of a man piling buildings on a riverbank recalls the story of human civilization’s attempts to assert dominance over nature and time through construction. Yet, as Joyce often implies, these efforts are fragile and temporary, always washed away by the flow of time (the river).
On a mythic level, the passage taps into Joyce’s cyclical vision of history, where all acts of creation (be they physical buildings or the creation of art and culture) are part of a larger, eternal recurrence. The builder could be read as HCE, the archetypal figure of the Everyman, who rises and falls throughout history. The banks of the river represent both the boundary of human existence and the eternal, flowing stream of consciousness and history that underpins Joyce’s novel.
Critical Perspectives:
Post-structuralist readings might focus on how this passage destabilizes the binary between construction (stability, permanence) and deconstruction (the flowing, ephemeral river), showing how meaning itself is always fluid in Joyce’s text.
Psychoanalytic interpretations could link the builder figure to Freud’s theories of civilization, repression, and the return of the repressed—especially considering the "liver" as a body organ processing emotional life.
Viconian readings would emphasize the cyclical view of history, with civilizations rising, building, and ultimately crumbling, only to be reborn in new forms.
Linguistic and Derridean analysis could delve into Joyce's use of puns and portmanteau words, which break down and reconstitute meaning in layers, much like the buildings piled upon each other.
This short passage, rich in metaphor, encapsulates many of the broader concerns of Finnegans Wake: history, memory, language, and the eternal cycle of construction and destruction.

#finishedbooks Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. I have been reading a Joyce novel chronologically over the last decade roughly every 3-4 years as with each novel they get more difficult as he is building on ideas and techniques...with this being the culmination in his final work. It said to be the most linguistically challenging novel in the western literary cannon, so decided to approach it by spending a night listening to every lecture on the book I could find on Google which provided a great context. Also, sought out the same British edition that I read his other three novels with my favorite Oxford World's Classics edition. Realized these aren't traditionally available in the US domestic market, but was all I ever found in Japan so most of my Zola, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, etc are from this publisher. In addition to a 70 page introduction it had a really useful chapter breakdown so despite the linguistics you could understand the story...I wouldn't say plot because there isn't one. So knowing the story, it just became about experiencing the writing then after each section of a chapter reconfirming what you just read. With that, it appears to be about Finnegan, aka HCE, who is a stuttering tavern keeper with a slight hunchback. He has a wife ALP and two boys of whom have different names of rival brothers throughout history with several layers of meaning either familial, (mostly) historical, biblical, mythological, and so it goes....and also a sister, Isey one of her names, who is only inferred through conversation. They exist as a universality yet collectively known as the Earwicker family. The story is a nonlinear dream of whom we don't know, that never ends as the opening line of the book is a sentence fragment that continues from the novel’s unfinished last line about the river Liffey that flows through the centre of Dublin. I felt it important to read the book front to back but if I ever decide to read it again will probably open it at random and read chapters at a time since with it's cyclical nature, one could argue almost demands it, but logical either way. One of the keys to the book is understanding the first pages where a wealth of the information is given…for example one can deduce the location with a map of Dublin and that he gets drunk falls from a ladder that brought him to his wake that we are currently at. Someone spills whiskey on his face and he comes to life again...and with this a history of the world, the fall of Adam and Eve, Rome, and even Humpty Dumpty's fall simultaneously with its rise finn-again-is-awake (thus the grammatically in correct title). However, underlying it all is the grandeur of the beauty of the everyday. From leopold Bloom of "Ulysses" to HCE here, it is simply our everyday selves that Joyce highlights as people fuck, a baby cries, alcoholics drink, etc. Like the pinnacle of most artistic mediums it is what you bring to it. No one can understand every word but what is important is to understand the connections your mind makes and another key is the sound and tempo of the work where you will find that your brain catches on before you do, making for a sequence of intentional Freudian slips...it just has to be experienced.
