“Sorting Myself Out” - An Exploration Of Sorting Algorithms As Musical Instruments - Video Performance

Algorithms are used all around us in every little piece of technology that surrounds us.

Without powerful sorting algorithms, most of the applications we use on the internet would be frustratingly slow. If Google hadn’t implemented efficient ways to sort through all the millions of terabytes of data sitting on their servers, each google search would take an insane amount of time to complete. In contrast, simple sorting algorithms are one of the first things students learn when studying computer science.

Sorting algorithms are not necessarily something very “sexy”. In fact, their outcome, even though extremely useful, is not terribly fascinating: you have an unordered list, run it through a sorting algorithm and the list comes out sorted.

In parallel, as humans, our journey is filled with moments when we need to “sort something out”. The process we need to do is not so different from what we ask from our machines: something in our lives is messy, we apply a system or a set of step-by-step instructions and we come out on the other side with some clarity. The process is not always “sexy” and the outcome can seem “matter of fact” once we’ve gone through the journey but without these processes, we wouldn’t have opportunities to grow and evolve.

“Sorting Myself Out” is a live coding performance with Sonic Pi that uses Earth To Abigail’s sonifications of four different sorting algorithms to create melodies, rhythms and textures. It aims to use each algorithm for the creative power it holds through its specific and unique way of accomplishing the sorting process without focusing on their final result. The creative objective is to highlight the process instead of the answer.

What’s important is the journey, not the destination.

Mynah Marie is a composer, singer, live coder and accordion player from Montreal, Canada based in Haifa, Israel. Some of the artists she collaborated with are Fazal Qureshi (India), Din Din Aviv and Mayumena (Israel) and Casa Verde Colectivo (Mexico).

I listen to Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol alot in the last cupple of months. I can relate to the lyrics alot and when I hear this song I just stop everything I do until I feel like continuing my life.

Whats not bothering me will be much easier.  The last 3 months has been really hard on me and they still are, and I feel pretty shitty most of the time. I lost alot in those 3 months and it doesnt seem to get better.
