What is Earthing?
Be is household or an industry, commercial installation or buildings, electrical safety is often observed compromised by inadequate earthing or problems associated to it. So we start our discussion today, with basics of earthing or grounding, and later we will focus upon the problems associated with earthings having problems.
Lets begin with What is Earthing?
As per IEC 60364- Earth: The conductive mass of the Earth, whose electric potential at any point is Conventionally taken as zero
What is Objective of Earthing?
The main aim of earthing is to maintain a zero potential of all non-current carrying parts of electrical system which has the probability of accidental connection by some fault. If by some means the non-current carrying parts are electrified which is not earthed, the person touching it will receive a lethal shock.
So by earthing the non-current carrying parts are connected to earth and maintained at earth potential. It also prevents static charge buildup.
The primary functions of earthings are as below:
Personnel safety. Personnel safety is provided by low resistance grounding and bonding between equipment, metallic objects, piping, trays and other conductive objects, so that currents due to ground faults or lightning do not result in voltages sufficient to cause a shock hazard.
Equipment and Facility Protection.: For dependable functioning of over current device , to protect facility and equipment, low resistance earthing and bonding between electrical services is provided , so that faults or lightning currents do not result in hazardous voltages within the facility.
Electrical noise reduction : Electrical noise reduction is accomplished on communication circuits by ensuring that minimum voltage potentials exist between communications-electronics equipment. Also the impedance between signal ground points throughout the facility to earth is minimal.
I will not like to forget to mention here, that a good earthing system should have a periodic inspection and maintenance system to retain its effectiveness. All the features of design, selection of earthing type and location of the installations have great impact of periodicity of maintenance and inspection therefore, we recommend to keep in mind always about periodic inspection and maintenance while designing of earthing system. Old types of conventional earthing had serious disadvantage of need of regular watering which outdated only because of higher need of periodic maintenance. We will separately discuss the advantage and disadvantages of conventional earthing separately.
The earthing or grounding in electrical system ia always invisible, physically and functionally, but we feel its importance only with the problems in electrical system with poor or no earthing.
Electrical earthing or grounding:
Earthing or grounding system is an electrical circuit which connects a part of electrical system to the earth or ground.
As per IEEE standard 80:2000-“Ground– A conducting connection, whether intentional or accidental, by which an electric circuit or equipment is connected to the earth or to some conducting body of relatively large extent that serves in place of the earth.”
So ground is referred to the equipment grounding system, Such as metallic raceways, cable armor, enclosures, cabinets, frames, building steel, and all other non-current carrying metal parts of the electrical distribution system. It is also referred to the system neutral where star point is connected to mother earth with the help of some earthing equipment.
Types of earthing or grounding system: by function
Equipment Grounding:
In equipment grounding system all non-current carrying metal parts are interconnected and then connected to the earth. This way firstly there is no potential or voltage between the non-current carrying metal parts and then secondly there is no potential difference between the earth and non-current carrying metal parts. Non-current carrying metal parts are such as- panel or enclosure body, metal race way, cable channel, equipment body or frame.
System grounding:
In system grounding a current carrying conductor is intentionally connected to earthing system grounded. This intentionally earthed current carrying conductor is called neutral or grounded conductor. The neutral of Low voltage side of transformer and the stator of generator is the example of system grounding. Though most of the time the grounded conductor are not carrying current but as per the international code these have to be treated same as the live conductor. That is the precautions, insulation; handling will be same as that of the phase or live conductor.
In system grounding for the fault current there is low impedance return path from the load to the source, thus fault clearing is done and also ground fault protection system can be initiated.
